In Dan Farah’s The Age of Disclosure, one of the buzziest documentaries to premiere at SXSW this year, it takes interviews with 34 people from all levels of government and military to make the case that we’re not alone in the universe, and that we should all be paranoid about the vast conspiracy keeping civilians from finding out.

In Robert Stone’s Starman, premiering at SXSW to generally less buzz, only one person is interviewed, but he makes his own case for why we’re not alone, using this conviction to reflect on several decades of human progress and the fact that, no matter what else is happening out in the stars, we only have one Earth.

You can’t keep Michael Hirst away from the world of Vikings. Prime Video has given a series order to Bloodaxe, a historical drama created, written, and executive produced by Michael and Horatio Hirst.

Hirst created and wrote all 89 episodes of the Vikings series for the History Channel and executive-produced Vikings: Valhalla, the sequel series that aired for three seasons on Netflix. Although Bloodaxe will also deal with real-life Norse figures, the new series won’t be related to Hirst’s previous Viking dramas.

Prime Video is creating a brand new historical drama series. The project will be developed, written and executive produced by Vikings'creator Michael Hirst.

It's been five long years since Vikingspremiered its final season, but fans of the award-winning Norse drama will finally have their next Viking obsession. Sure, the sequel seriesVikings: Valhalla from Netflix did enough to quench the thirst of the loyal fanbase, but the short-lived drama was canceled by the streamer last year. Now, Prime Video will set sail on their own Norse adventure, this time outside the Vikings franchise.

Prime Video has granted a series order for Bloodaxe, a new Norse drama from the creative mind behind Vikings, Michael Hirst, alongside Horatio Hirst. Despite the behind-the-scenes connections to Vikings, it will be a standalone series set in a new universe. But like the aforementioned show, it will be based on real-life historical figures. It’s hard to believe that 2024 is nearly over. It certainly was a tough year for the world, and one we will remember, for all the good and the bad. But one thing is certain: our favorite authors dropped some awesome books this year. So many fantasy books came out in 2024 that it was hard to keep track, between new installments in well-established series, standalones, and new sagas. A splash of auteurish openings on Christmas Day, with Focus Features’ Nosferatu, Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown, A24’s naughty Babygirl and Rachel Morrison’s The Fire Inside, is poised to send the holiday week’s box office to a potential $280 million tally. That puts it on par with last year’s holiday week that was boosted by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wonka, Migration and The Color Purple.

Christmas week 2021 holds the post-Covid record for the most made by movies with $292.4M during that time, a majority of that from Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Still, it’s interesting. Even though there isn’t a massive, oxygen-sucking tentpole in the marketplace, the heavy supply of family titles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Mufasa, Wicked and Moana 2. plus the new offerings, are making for a lucrative season. Comscore projects we’ll end 2024 at $8.75 billion, just 3% shy of 2023’s $9 billion tally.

Vinland Saga Season 3 has been a hot topic as audiences eagerly anticipate its release. 

The Viking anime debuted in July 2019. It tells the story of a young Norse warrior, Thorfinn, who aims to avenge his father during a bloody Viking war.

Here at Film Stories, we are (read: I am) fans of exactly two things – Robert Eggers’ 2022 Viking epic The Northman, and the first two episodes of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s monstrously underrated post-Sherlock miniseries, Dracula. Everything else we talk about is just filler, really.

After securing publishing rights and announcing a current-gen release earlier this year, IllFonic has announced an October 1 release for Predator: Hunting Grounds on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. CinemaCon attendees Wednesday got a first look at Focus Features’ second film with Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, a dark and gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her which causes untold horror in its wake.

Introducing the footage, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “This ain’t your father’s Nosferatu” and promised it will give “new meaning to the term Christmas feast when we open on December 25.”

In the footage, we see the terror and hysteria rampant in the village as various townsfolk shriek, “He is coming” after the young woman calls to him seemingly in a nighttime trance. “My dreams grow darker,” she says, and asks Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, “Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?”

"Minus One" is also unique in the Godzilla canon in that it affects an optimistic worldview. Several Godzilla movies in the franchise tended to zero in on Godzilla's horrifying nuclear origins, pointing out that the monster is the direct result of atomic testing. Humans were only able to destroy Godzilla in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film "Gojira" by creating a new weapon even more devastating than the atomic bomb. That film is sad and dour and pessimistic. In contrast, "Godzilla Minus One" is about how ingenuity and redemption are still possible after World War II, and that humans needn't be hopeless or obsessed with death. It's okay, "Minus One" argues, to let go of the violence.
