In Dan Farah’s The Age of Disclosure, one of the buzziest documentaries to premiere at SXSW this year, it takes interviews with 34 people from all levels of government and military to make the case that we’re not alone in the universe, and that we should all be paranoid about the vast conspiracy keeping civilians from finding out.
In Robert Stone’s Starman, premiering at SXSW to generally less buzz, only one person is interviewed, but he makes his own case for why we’re not alone, using this conviction to reflect on several decades of human progress and the fact that, no matter what else is happening out in the stars, we only have one Earth.
I’m not really valorizing one philosophical mindset over the other, nor exactly stating a preference for one filmmaking approach or the other. I’m just noting that while The Age of Disclosure...

You can’t keep Michael Hirst away from the world of Vikings. Prime Video has given a series order to Bloodaxe, a historical drama created, written, and executive produced by Michael and Horatio Hirst.
Hirst created and wrote all 89 episodes of the Vikings series for the History Channel and executive-produced Vikings: Valhalla, the sequel series that aired for three seasons on Netflix. Although Bloodaxe will also deal with real-life Norse figures, the new series won’t be related to Hirst’s previous Viking dramas.
Bloodaxe chronicles “the rise of one of history’s most famous Viking warriors, Erik Bloodaxe, and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. As they fight for the throne of Norway, the land is torn apart by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals. Prime Video is creating a brand new historical drama series. The project will be developed, written and executive produced by Vikings'creator Michael Hirst.
"Bloodaxe will follow the rise of legendary Viking warrior Erik Bloodaxe and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. As they fight for the throne of Norway, the land is torn apart by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals," the official synopsis per Deadline reads. "With war looming and chaos consuming the kingdom, drawing in the ruthless kings of other Scandinavian countries, and even a powerful English ruler, the stage is set for a thundering, cataclysmic, compelling and utterly magical new Viking Saga."
While Bloodaxe shares some similarities with Vikings and its Netflix sequel, Vikings: Valhalla, it is not connected to either show. Instead, the new Norse saga is set decades after the events of Vikings and decades before Valhalla.Hirst' son Horatio will also serve...

It's been five long years since Vikingspremiered its final season, but fans of the award-winning Norse drama will finally have their next Viking obsession. Sure, the sequel seriesVikings: Valhalla from Netflix did enough to quench the thirst of the loyal fanbase, but the short-lived drama was canceled by the streamer last year. Now, Prime Video will set sail on their own Norse adventure, this time outside the Vikings franchise.
Prime Video has granted a series order for Bloodaxe, a new Norse drama from the creative mind behind Vikings, Michael Hirst, alongside Horatio Hirst. Despite the behind-the-scenes connections to Vikings, it will be a standalone series set in a new universe. But like the aforementioned show, it will be based on real-life historical figures. A plot description, as provided by Amazon MGM Studios:

Live-action remakes of animated movies are all the rage in Hollywood at the moment. These are the streaming era's answer to the Disney vault of decades past. Now that movies are widely available on streaming, simply hiding a movie for 10 years only to do a grand re-release in theaters isn't feasible. Instead, Disney, and now DreamWorks, are all about spending hundreds of millions of dollars re-imagining beloved animated movies with live-action and/or, in certain cases, purely CGI instead.
The latest one, "How to Train Your Dragon," is a remake of an animated feature that turns 15 in 2025 and is pretty much undeniably one of the best movies DreamWorks Animation has ever made. There's reason to be excited, too, as Dean DeBlois who directed the original animated "How to Train Your Dragon" with Chris Sanders, is back to helm the live-action retelling — meaning, the guiding creative vision remains the same.

The Dutch film industry, often overshadowed by its European counterparts, finds itself at a potential turning point. Industry insiders are vocal about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, painting a picture of an industry at a crossroads.
In recent months, Dutch titles have impressed on the global stage. Johan Grimonprez’s Netherlands-Belgium-France co-production “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” is currently nominated for the best documentary feature Oscar, and two Dutch shorts – Victoria Warmerdam’s live-action sci-fi story “I’m Not a Robot” and Nina Gantz’s stop-motion gem “Wander to Wonder” – also scored nominations. Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl” had a fantastic festival run last year, earning Reijn a Directors to Watch Award at Palm Springs, and is currently in theaters around the world.

What is it with 30-something Quebecoise filmmakers and their interest in exploring the tired porn trope of unsatisfied wives finding their sexual needs met by hot handymen? In 2023, Monia Chokri’s Ok dramedy “The Nature of Love” was selected for Cannes and even won a César for best foreign film. Now, helmer Chloé Robichaud (“Sara Prefers to Run”) enters the Sundance World Dramatic competition with “Two Women,” a cringy, unconvincing remake of a cult 1970 Québec sex romp, “Deux femmes en or.”
Screenwriter-producer Catherine Léger earlier adapted the material into a successful stageplay, but the theater version seems to have included some bracing irony, a quality sorely missing from this earnest, naturalistic misfire. The best that can be said for Robichaud’s film is that her two leads, Karine Gonthier-Hyndman and Laurence Leboeuf, give committed performances
The action mostly takes place in an ugly, suburban Montreal eco-housing coop, where the cramped interior spaces scream confinement.

DreamWorks’ animated feature The Wild Robot boasts a nearly-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, and now the Chris Sanders-written and directed film has been nominated for three Academy Awards. Per Deadline, Sanders, who watched the nominations from Tokyo, Japan while touring with The Wild Robot, said getting the news of the film’s three nominations was “amazing.”
“(On Monday) we were screening the film and introducing it to the very first audience here, and now to get this nomination has been amazing. Three nominations, it’s incredible,” Sanders said of the film that is based on the series of books of the same name by Peter Brown.
The Wild Robot, which in addition to its 97% Tomatometer Score, has a 98% Popcornmeter, or audience score based on 5,000+ reviews, has earned more than $342 million worldwide since its release in September 2024. The film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Animated Feature Film, Best...

Some pop culture lovers are more open to trying Japanese anime than others are, since anime can be an acquired taste. Animation fans and TV lovers might not like the flamboyant style of anime, saying it's "too anime" for their enjoyment. Fortunately, there are plenty of wonderful anime series that are light on the clichéd, overly familiar parts of anime and focus more on their own unique styles.
How "anime" a show should be is subjective, but fans know some series are much less "anime" than others, providing an on-ramp for new viewers. When non-fans think they dislike the idea of anime, they're just opposed to the excessive clichés and tropes of anime like wild hair and excessive fan service, but some series steer clear of all that. Those excellent anime titles may feel familiar to Western fans with their character designs, settings, storylines, and the like.

Back in 2020, Quibi was promised as the next big thing in the modern streaming era, but it failed to live up to its own expectations, shutting down just 8 months after it launched. Focused on content that was just 10 minutes long, Quibi released 75 different programs, and one of them was a horror-anthology series titled 50 States of Fright. The series ran for two seasons, consisting of 24 total episodes before Quibi shut down.
Produced by legendary horror director Sam Raimi, who also wrote and directed the first episode, 50 States of Fright was able to attract some top-tier talent, including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan and Viking's Travis Fimmel, along with many others. Focusing on self-contained horror stories that are each set in a different state, 50 States of Fright was ambitious for its platform, but was it actually worth watching?

The Danish star of the BBC’s Dracula, Ruben Östlund’s The Square and the new historical action-adventure William Tell is here to answer your questions
Claes Bang only became an actor by chance, after he was persuaded to join a production of Hair at high school in Denmark. He was scared to apply to drama school. “I was sure they would say: ‘Thank you very much for coming, but no thanks,’” he says. But he was accepted and the rest – as they say in Denmark – var historie.
After appearing in multiple Danish and German TV shows and films which we won’t pretend we’ve seen (Lærkevej – Til Døden os Skiller; Rettet Raffi!; Überleben an der Scheidungsfront), as well as featuring in Borgen and The Bridge, Bang jumped into the mainstream after starring in Ruben Östlund’s satirical black comedy The Square, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes film festival.

New Year’s Day 2025 rang in an estimated $42.9M for all movies, the best result for the holiday post Covid, ahead of New Year’s Day 2022 which grossed $40.2M, led by Spider-Man: No Way Home ($23.1M).
New Year’s Day yesterday was +33% over the first day of 2024 — a great new beginning to a box office year which is expected to clear $9 billion. New Year’s Day 2025 was also up +38% over New Year’s Eve’s business.

Babygirl has received a divisive Rotten Tomatoes audience score, setting a shocking record for Nicole Kidman. The erotic thriller, directed and written by Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies), delves into the life of Romy, a powerful tech CEO in New York who embarks on a dangerous and impassioned affair with her younger intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson). The Babygirl cast also features Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde, who join Kidman in a story exploring Romy's sexual repression and journey to self-acceptance.
Babygirl has a 55% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, making it part of an unexpected trend of audience misfires for Kidman this year. Despite Kidman's compelling performance, which helped the erotic film achieve a 77% Rotten Tomatoes score among critics, the audience response to her recent films, including Netflix's Spellbound and the rom-com A Family Affair, reveals a surprising disconnect for an actor known for her command of acclaimed and award-winning roles.

It’s hard to believe that 2024 is nearly over. It certainly was a tough year for the world, and one we will remember, for all the good and the bad. But one thing is certain: our favorite authors dropped some awesome books this year. So many fantasy books came out in 2024 that it was hard to keep track, between new installments in well-established series, standalones, and new sagas. To help you choose your next read, we’re rounding up five the best fantasy books that came out this past year.
Please note that this is obviously a subjective list. I wish I had read all the fantasy books that came out in 2024, but alas. My list of favorite books from 2024 will undoubtedly differ from yours, and we at Winter Is Coming would love to hear from you what your favorite fantasy reads were this year. For now, here is my list!

A splash of auteurish openings on Christmas Day, with Focus Features’ Nosferatu, Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown, A24’s naughty Babygirl and Rachel Morrison’s The Fire Inside, is poised to send the holiday week’s box office to a potential $280 million tally. That puts it on par with last year’s holiday week that was boosted by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wonka, Migration and The Color Purple.
Christmas week 2021 holds the post-Covid record for the most made by movies with $292.4M during that time, a majority of that from Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Still, it’s interesting. Even though there isn’t a massive, oxygen-sucking tentpole in the marketplace, the heavy supply of family titles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Mufasa, Wicked and Moana 2. plus the new offerings, are making for a lucrative season. Comscore projects we’ll end 2024 at $8.75 billion, just 3% shy of 2023’s $9 billion tally.

Former WWE champion Bret “The Hitman” Hart is a Simpsons super freak. So when producers came calling in 1997 for Hart to voice an animated character, he jumped at the chance. “I was a big fan,” Hart told The Wrestling Classic, “so it was a big honor for me.”
Hart hoped that he could play a Springfield version of himself, but The Simpsons had other ideas — at least at first. “They said, ‘No, it’s just a part for a wrestler.’ I think my wrestler was called the Mad Viking or something like that. So when I did the voiceover, I was the voice for the Mad Viking. I wasn’t Bret Hart, and it’s a little bit different.”
But wait — that is Bret Hart agreeing to purchase Burns Manor despite the old man stink permeating the hallways. After all, pro wrestlers such as himself appreciate all the closet space the place has to offer.

So when I did the voiceover, I was the voice for the Mad Viking. I wasn’t Bret Hart, and it’s a little bit different.”

A post-metal band plays at a screening of a vintage Viking saga. Björk shows up to check out the latest films by Pedro Almodovar and Athina Rachel Tsingari. Filmmakers relax in warm mineral-laden waters at the ocean’s edge. Industry members are invited to the President of Iceland’s house to chat about the state of the film business. It’s a typical day at the Reykjavik International Film Festival.

Cry havoc, and all that – we’ve got another pulse-pounding historical epic on the horizon. Hooray! More on the William Tell movie below:
Here at Film Stories, we are (read: I am) fans of exactly two things – Robert Eggers’ 2022 Viking epic The Northman, and the first two episodes of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s monstrously underrated post-Sherlock miniseries, Dracula. Everything else we talk about is just filler, really.
Until now! Because what do the two above projects have in common? Danish actor and musician Claes Bang, of course! And The Square star has a new project on the horizon in the form of Nick Hamm’s upcoming historical biopic, William Tell, about the famed 14th century marksman, which is now set for a UK cinema release on 10th January 2025.

While anime like Attack on Titan has been hailed for its unique take on dark themes and multifaceted characters, there is another series that quietly competes for the throne with its deep, character-driven storyline — Vinland Saga. Although it doesn’t display the rapid chaos or destruction of Titans devouring humans, the character development and philosophical depth of this anime can make even Attack on Titan run for their money.
Vinland Saga | Credit: Wit Studio
Based on the manga by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga, initially starts as a rather slow-paced series. However, as the story progresses, it gradually reveals its true nature as a deep emotional journey about the search for peace, revenge, and the meaning of life. To fully appreciate its brilliance, one needs to sit with it, absorb its themes, and watch its characters evolve.

Given that the two historical TV shows explore similar themes of religion, identity, and nationality, some people have been wondering if The Last Kingdom and Vikings are connected. Although it has been around for some time, the 2010s saw an increasing interest in the historical fiction genre. Vikings was one of the shows at the heart of this trend as many people were intrigued by the lore and characters (especially Ragnar and Lagertha). They also couldn't get enough of the engaging blood-filled battle sequences and engaging storylines.
With the series proving to be a huge success, it wasn't all that surprising then when many streaming platforms and channels began creating shows that were quite similar to Vikings. While many of these shows were fantastic, The Last Kingdom was one that particularly drew the attention of Vikings' fans as it seemed to follow a similar structure, contain real-life historical figures, and...

Although Ghosts season 3 effectively forgot about Thors son Bjorn, the CBS sitcom promises to bring back his plot in the upcoming season 4. There are a lot of ghosts in CBSs Ghosts, so it is no surprise that the show occasionally forgets to update viewers on all their relationships. After all, every episode also has to make room for Sam and Jays antics, not to mention filling in the details of each ghosts backstory. Fortunately, Ghosts season 4 has a chance to revisit the abandoned storylines of some of the houses long-time residents from earlier seasons.
Related I Really Hope Ghosts Season 4s Biggest Twist Is A Fake-Out
Ghosts season 4 promises that Jay will soon be able to see the show's ghosts too, but I'm desperately hoping this plot will just be a fake out.
Although Ghosts season 4 wont crossover with its British inspiration, the sitcom will bring back characters glimpsed earlier in the shows history.

Batman has been around for 85 years and the argument can be made that he is the greatest superhero of all time. Despite having no superpowers, he consistently defeats his enemies through his wits and ingenuity. His peak physical condition and exceptional hand-to-hand combat skills also play a role in his success. Batmans rogues gallery is filled with iconic and terrifying villains, and several anime characters would fit perfectly among them.
Most of these terrifying anime characters are villains in their own series, but a few follow their own brand of justice, which would put them at odds with Batman's moral code. Some of these characters possess supernatural abilities, but others are far more grounded. Many of these characters would test Batman physically, but others would test him emotionally and mentally.

When it comes to many of his fans, Chris Hemsworth is the ideal man. From his famously attractive looks to his surprisingly funny and lighthearted personality, and even his impressive acting career, he is the full package for most of his fans. Which is why many look up to his relationship with actress Elsa Pataky.
The pair have been madly in love with each other for over a decade, building a life together and breaking the hearts of both their fans simultaneously. For many, their love is the hallmark of what a healthy and happy relationship is supposed to look like.

With this in mind, many would be surprised to know that the actress was in a very serious and committed relationship with another high-profile celebrity before she got together with Hemsworth. So much so, that her former boyfriend even bought her a castle.

Exclusive: Ascot Elite Entertainment, which previously enjoyed success with Northmen – A Viking Saga, has announced a new Viking project, provisionally entitled Seven for Valhalla.
The project reunites the Swiss production group with writing duo Bastian Zach and Matthias Bauer, who co-wrote Northmen – A Viking Saga.
Their screenplay is set to take inspiration from Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic action picture Seven Samurai, about seven samurai who muster their forces to defend their village from bandits.
The project comes a decade after Ascot Elite successfully made its first foray into production with the 2014 hit Northmen – A Viking Saga, directed by Claudio Fäh and starring Tom Hopper, Ed Skrein, James Norton and Johan Hegg.
In between times, writing partners Zach and Bauer have enjoyed success with their screenplay for the Ard/Orf crime series Death In The Prater, which achieved record viewing figures, and were also instrumental in shaping the concept...

Freydis Eiriksdottir’s character has the most fascinating arc in Vikings: Valhalla, and her life changes completely after she finds her real purpose. Freydis became the spiritual leader of the people of Jomsborg after she toppled the king, Harekr, and fought for the rights of the pagans, who had been ill-treated for ages. The last daughter of Uppsala knew that she had to be the keeper of faith and make Jomsborg the last holdout for people who believed in the old gods. Freydis was well aware of how they were surrounded by Christians on all sides, and she knew that if they got the opportunity, they would make sure that Jomsborg’s entire community was destroyed. The way Freydis fought Olaf at the end of season 2 made people put their trust in her. They knew that, as long as Freydis was there, no harm could come to them. Before...

Assassin’s Creed has always had the advantage of being able to experiment with numerous historical settings, with each game set in a different era and usually introducing a new protagonist. Not only does this help Ubisoft keep things fresh even 17 years after the series’ debut, but it also covers a wide range of content that fans of varied tastes can get behind.
From the streets of Italy to the open world of Greece, the fanbase has visited places all across the globe, but long before the studio launched the trailer for Shadows, the community had been asking for a game set in Japan.
Now that Assassin’s Creed is finally taking action to a historical Japanese period, it raises a concerning sentiment. The franchise shouldn’t have taken this long to listen to the fans, because it may be too late.

Six days ahead of the launch of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Microsoft and Ninja Theory have decided to drop a little recap trailer for those who “walked in late”. In other words, if you missed out on playing the excellent Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, this new video explains the events that transpired prior to Hellblade II.
For those that do need reminding, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice centres on Senua, a Celtic warrior who embarks on a vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. The BAFTA-winning title is noteworthy for its frank and novel approach to psychosis, coupled with its excellent story and characters.
The sequel, which was announced back in 2019, once again centres on Senua, who sets out on “a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland”, intent on saving those who have suffered under Norse tyranny.

Eiichiro Oda's iconic shonen manga One Piece is steadily approaching the start of its next major arc, which will involve the Straw Hats journeying to an island populated by Viking-like warriors. Recently, a One Piece fan uncovered a statement from Oda that sheds light on why he developed an interest in Nordic warriors and has incorporated them into One Piece.

Players must adapt their play styles and gear up for intense battles to conquer the new threats in the Ashlands.
The new Valheim Ashlands update adds a multitude of new enemies to the survival game, all of which vary in difficulty. Valheim has been one of the more popular survival games since its release, partially due to its addictive gameplay. Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" was an unexpectedly large hit in the United States, and currently holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Japanese-language Godzilla film in U.S. box office history. "Minus One" is also unique in the Godzilla canon in that it affects an optimistic worldview. Several Godzilla movies in the franchise tended to zero in on Godzilla's horrifying nuclear origins, pointing out that the monster is the direct result of atomic testing. Humans were only able to destroy Godzilla in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film "Gojira" by creating a new weapon even more devastating than the atomic bomb. That film is sad and dour and pessimistic. In contrast, "Godzilla Minus One" is about how ingenuity and redemption are still possible after World War II, and that humans needn't be hopeless or obsessed with death. It's okay, "Minus One" argues, to let go of the violence.

Before “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” became synonymous with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, the song from Michael Bay’s 1998 science fiction disaster flick Armageddon had its beginnings in another romance. Performed by Aerosmith, the power ballad was written by prolific song writer Diane Warren, who was inspired by an exchange between Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin.
In her new memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand writes about lying in bed with Brolin one night, when he told her, “I don’t want to fall asleep.

We’re hours away from Barbra Streisand’s memoir, My Name is Barbra, and stories are starting to emerge from the long-anticipated tome. In a new interview with the BBC, Streisand recounted one of the many tales she tells in the 992-page book — and it’s an impressive flex.
In the book, Streisand admitted to some hilarious diva-like behavior, including the time she called up Apple CEO Tim Cook to complain about the way Siri was pronouncing her name.
“My name isn’t spelled with a ‘Z,'” she said.
