Can watch once

Simple story, clean and easy execution. Nothing extraordinary. But there is something that says let me give it the benefit of the doubt.

Do You Like Sugar In Your Coffee???

Well you better beware who is making the coffee when you're at the US - Mexico border.

So here we get a little tale of a mother daughter team working a bed and breakfast on the border. They seem to prey on unsuspecting guests, but of course a good looking young guy shows up and daughter gets interested in him and it throws the whole game off. So what we have is the what happens next when you throw love and hormones into what was a good thing! I didn't think it was that bad. But it wasn't that great either. 5/10.

a 3 just for the work

I was surprised to learn that Camilla played in a movie. Her acting is bad throughout the whole riverdale seasons. Here it is no difference, the lack of emotion brings back the memories of the first twilight movie with kirsten stewart. Where is the suspense? This movie could have been much better, but not with these actors. The movie is nothing original and excuted poorly. Don't waste your time on this.

Nice surprise

I hadn't heard much about this film prior to watching it so didn't really have any expectations. I was surprised to find it to be a little gem of a film. The acting's good and the actors are believable in their roles. While parts of the story are a little cliched, I did find it entertaining. The relationship between mother and daughter could have been explored more deeply. It would have been nice to have some background on their situation and how they came to be there. One of the better films I've seen in a while.

Dark & gentle meditation on power and control.

If you look through the other reviews here you'll see a rash of early 10s and from then on it seems like every review swings wildly between love and extreme dislike.

If I had to guess why it would be around expectations and perhaps marketing too. This film isn't a thriller or a horror in the conventional sense. That's neither bad or good in itself, but if you were expecting a slasher film you'd be disappointed.

Instead Coyote Lake is a dark but gently paced and fairly simple story that is well written, well shot and well acted.

I would definitely recommend it, but I would also advise that the viewer goes in with as little expectations as possible to maximise the experience.

Suspenseful and Well-Acted In My Opinion

Reviewers seem to either love or hate this film. I gravitate toward the former camp. Seligman did a good job in my opinion of maintaining a suspenseful atmosphere. I thought the three leads played well together, particularly the mother and daughter. Camila Mendes should have a bright future ahead of her. The palm definitely goes to Adriana Barraza for playing one of the most hardboiled customers in film, right up there with performances by legends like Richard Boone and Lee Van Cleef. The fact that this was done by a middle aged woman makes it even more noteworthy. On a final note, this film reminded me very much of a Japanese film from 1964, Onibaba, again about a mother and daughter who murder people, only this time fleeing soldiers for their armor and money. That's worth a watch too. My general impression is that the people who dislike the film like their cinematic gratification fast and furious. For those prepared to give Coyote Lake a chance, you may well find it rewarding.

Low budget, with huge plot holes!

This would have been better if the script were better. There are too many plot holes to make the story credible. The acting is mediocre but it's really the ridiculous holes in the plot that take away from it being a good movie. One has to wonder if anyone actually thought the movie through. If they had, perhaps the the holes in the story would have become apparent. Films always require one to enter a world of make believe but this one actually requires you to suspend logic and credibility!

Slow but thought provoking

I don't understand all the negative reviews. Yes this one is slow with very little action. Yet, the story is thought provoking and well acted. The fun part is the ethical questions you are challenged with. This film is not horror or thriller, but it's a great drama. I recommend you try it some night when you are feeling contemplative. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about the characters and the questions raised in this story, which to me indicates a great film.

A Different Crime

Lacked subtitling for the Spanish speaking dialogue, and there was a lot, which made no sense as subtitling existed for the English speaking portions so the cost to add the rest would have been minimal. A bit different take on criminal activity. Just can't trust those sweet mamas & daughters. Definitely not going swimming in that lake. The suspense is in how you think it's going to end.

Simple & Slow !

Simple story of a girl who stays with his mother at a lake side and offer shelter for tourists. But their real aim is to kill them and got a lot of money so that they can live a happy life somewhere long away from lake. One day a young boy is coming with his wounded friend to take shelter and threatening girl and her mother with a gun to secure safety. Meanwhile killer family was going to kill a man already. Later young girl fell in love with that boy. What is next and end? You have to watch this movie. The weak side of this movie is its slowness. Casting and acting is just okay. Somewhere emotions are surpassed to dull story line. Watchable at once but not much expectations.

Not terrible

The acting wasn't great. The story wasn't great. It was a bit predictable. As stated, it wasn't terrible but I'm pretty sure no one from this movie was invited to any award shows.

Oh my - that was really bad

A bunch of mentally challenged people are just standing around doing nothing for the most of the movie. It is super boring and seems to last forever. The story is mostly nonexisting - there is no reason given why people are doing what ever they are doing - it's just a mess of stupidity.

I just don't get what was the whole point, it just sucks so hard that I can't believe this has been done intentionaly - surely something went horribly wrong somewhere, there has to be some excuse for the lack of any intelligence.

A thriller this is not - there is no suspense, no logic and no characters that resemble humans in any way - the acting is crazy bad. Half the movie is spoken in spanish which doesn't help understanding anything that is slowly almost happening in the movie.

But at least nobody is singing, so that's a positive.

Fine execution of a standoff between a daughter and the world she's locked into.

This simple and short film (only around 90mins) is very underappreciated I feel going by the general reviews and ratings I've seen.

What we have here is a standoff situation where everything has become blurred. A mother & daughter based in the US side of the Mexico/US border are taken hostage in their isolated, but everything becomes a conundrum.

The reality is that the storyline is a moral maze between who actually is the evil one, but it's not overly taxing. From the start it shows a dark side to the mother & daughter in their cabin home, whilst the hostage takers who arrive aren't exactly the tough guys they need to be.

It's quite dark, but not overly so. It keeps it simple, and doesn't need to ratchet things up. It's a tense movie, and you follow in particular the situation with the daughter as her standoff is really as much with her mother as it is with the kidnappers. She's locked into an insular world and wants more.

I thought for a simple, low budget movie, this was very well executed, and deserves credit. Feels like a theatre play transferred onto screen. The acting is wonderful and fine by all, and you will never feel bored.

Admittedly, it's one that has key moments that are sign-posted but doesn't take the easy way out. Predictable in that sense, but it's more the sum of its parts. I thought it was a really good viewing.

Deserves more respect & attention than it has been given so far in my opinion.

Well-Acted, Original Plot, Pleasant Surprise

I happened upon this gem of a movie by accident. What a pleasant surprise. The movie is very well acted, with the mother and daughter putting in a stellar performance. I hope to see them more in the future. The plot is original, grabbing your attention from the very first frame. You can't believe what you are watching. I won't say more, so as not to spoil it for others. This is a real sleeper that you'll enjoy!
