Being a reader means being disappointed by film adaptations of books. The makers never seem to get it right, and to be fair, it is a tough nut to crack. I happened upon Lynne Ramsay’s work after reading Lionel Shriver’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2003), which was adapted into a film of the same name by Ramsay in 2011. The viewing of it was burdened with heightened expectations because of all the critical acclaim the film had garnered, and more importantly, the source material, which I still consider to be one of the best books I have ever read. I was disappointed. An epistolary that thrived on reflections of a woman revisiting motherhood and her detached relationship with a son who grew into a mass murderer had been reduced to a film that wasn’t interested in words at all. This was before I wrote about films.

Paramount knew what it was getting into with director Darren Aronofsky's mother!. Starring Jennifer Lawrence in the titular role, the movie earned a rare F grade according to CinemaScore, which implies extreme dislike among audiences who checked it out on its first day of release. Generally, movies that score this poorly on the polling platform become objects of curiosity, which is exactly what happened with mother! The fact that the film starred A-listers such as Lawrence and Javier Bardem only made it more intriguing. This fascination will follow it for eternity, which is why the movie keeps popping up on streaming charts regularly.
According to FlixPatrol, mother! was the ninth-biggest film on Paramount+ on June 12, earning a total of 41 points on the platform. The list was led, as it has been for weeks, by Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick took the number two spot,...

The highly anticipated movie from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, Caught Stealing, has it’s first trailer and a release date – August 29 – and I can’t wait!
From Sony Pictures, the film stars Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), and Carol Kane.
Aronofsky’s films, all psychologically intense and often surreal, include Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010), Noah (2014), Mother! (2017), The Whale (2022) and Postcard from Earth (2023).
Vanity Fair ran a first look piece in April:
Darren Aronofsky knew he was truly capturing the essence of New York’s wild and unpredictable nightlife when his new movie got hit with a sprinkling of urine.
The uncomfortable encounter happened last fall as Caught Stealing shot scenes beside a tenement in a New York neighborhood that’s famous for its boisterous and bohemian residents and club-goers.

Austin Butler is on the run in the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky's 90s-set New York crime-thriller Caught Stealing, but the only thing the actor may be guilty of is stealing scenes, as he takes a leading role as former baseball player Henry "Hank" Thompson in the upcoming caper. The star-studded ensemble also features Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio, and an unrecognizable former Doctor Who actor. Butler will seemingly need all the help he can get from this crowd, but not everyone will be on his team.
The newly-released Caught Stealing trailer is aptly set to the iconic riffs of The Clash's punk rock classic Should I Stay or Should I Go, as, for much of the time, Butler's character doesn't look like he knows whether he's coming or going. That's because he unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a criminal enterprise after accepting an innocent...

Sony’s “Caught Stealing” trailer shows Austin Butler navigating New York City’s criminal landscape in Darren Aronofsky’s latest film.
Butler plays Hank Thompson, a former baseball player who “unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined,” per the official logline. Butler is joined by cast members Bad Bunny, Matt Smith, Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio, Action Bronson, Liev Schreiber and Griffin Dunne. Zoë Kravitz plays Butler’s love interest.
The film is written by Charlie Huston and adapted from his book series. “I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers,” Aronofsky previously said.
Aronofsky’s most recent film was 2022’s “The Whale.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a three-time Oscar nominee who has starred in a variety of classics in her long career, excelling at everything from comedy to drama, romance and action. Take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Pfeiffer has had a 40+-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough to someday earn three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations along with one win.

Netflix picked up the rights to Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo and is currently developing a new adaptation. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky—best known for Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale—is circling the project.
The 1983 version directed by Lewis Teague was a modest box office success despite garnering mixed reviews. In the decades since, Cujo has become a cult classic, with many praising the central performance from Dee Wallace who plays a desperate mother trying to protect her son from Cujo's wrath.
The poor St. Bernard starts out as your typical happy-go-lucky dog until he gets bitten by a rabid bat and turns feral. One of the film's most famous scenes is the climactic car showdown toward the end, when Cujo is frantically trying to break into Donna's (Wallace) vehicle as she hides inside it with her son. As...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.

Darren Aronofsky is going to the dogs. Or maybe just one particular dog.
The acclaimed filmmaker, whose resume ranges from Requiem for a Dream to Black Swan to The Whale, is in talks to direct Netflix’s adaptation of Stephen King novel Cujo.
The feature project was only revealed last week, but it’s clearly further along than known or moving on the fast track.
Roy Lee, who established his King bonafides with the two It movies, Salem’s Lot, and the upcoming dystopian thriller The Long Walk, is producing. There is no writer yet on the project, but Aronofsky is expected to meet with candidates soon.

There have been rumblings of a remake of the classic Stephen King adaptation Cujo for a long time – in fact, one was officially announced way back in 2013. In 2015, we heard that the remake had taken an unexpected turn, reimagining the name Cujo as an acronym that stood for Canine Unit Joint Operations. That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But last week, we learned that the Cujo remake has found a new home: the Netflix streaming service. And now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that a director might be close to signing on to the project, as Darren Aronofsky is said to be in negotiations to take the helm.
Aronofsky’s previous directorial efforts include Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, mother!, and The Whale.

In Netflix's library of original series, The Night Agent is one of the biggest standouts. It focuses on Gabriel Basso's Peter Sutherland Jr. as he works for the White House's Night Action initiative. In other words, he's a super-spy known as a Night Agent.
Peter manned the phones in Season 1, but Season 2 has him operating in and out of America like he's in a James Bond movie. However, Peter finds himself in yet another scandal. This time, some good comes from the conspiracy as it brings closure to the arc with his father: Peter Sr.

How Did Jennifer Lawrence Feel About Mother! While Dating Director Darren Aronofsky? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Jennifer Lawrence, known for her breakout role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and her Oscar-winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook, once confessed to being baffled by the plot of one of her own movies, Mother!, despite dating its director during filming.
The Confusing Fever Dream Of The Movie
The film in question, Mother!, was released in 2017 and directed by Darren Aronofsky, who is known for his work on Black Swan. The psychological thriller, rich in symbolism and allegory, left audiences scratching their heads—and apparently, Lawrence too.
The story follows a poet and his wife, whose peaceful life spirals into chaos when uninvited guests invade their secluded home. While the movie delves into themes like creation, destruction, and Biblical allegory, even its leading lady found its meaning elusive.

Dune: Part II has shown up on many critics' lists of the best films of 2024, including MovieWeb's list. It's an epic film from a great director who has been expanding our notions of what science-fiction films can be since Arrival and then Blade Runner 2049, and Denis Villeneuve had made tense masterpieces even before then. While he's too humble to include his own film, Villeneuve has revealed his own picks for the best movies of 2024.
Villeneuve's picks are fairly standard awards fare — they're neither too international or arthouse nor big blockbusters. He has chosen an historical epic that will likely sweep the Oscars (The Brutalist), a beautifully poetic indie about the lives of two Black men (Nickel Boys), a star-studded drama about religion and power (Conclave), a boundary-pushing adaptation with a subversive lead performance (Queer), and a controversial French film about a transgender crime lord (Emilia Pérez). Did The Hunger Games influence Jennifer Lawerence’s career? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
At the London Film Festival’s “Screen Talk,” Lawrence reflected on the chaos following her Hunger Games debut and Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook. “I think I lost a sense of control,” she said. “Between The Hunger Games coming out and winning the Oscar, I became such a commodity that every decision felt like a big, big group decision.”
The downside of franchise fame hit hard. While The Hunger Games skyrocketed her career, it also left her feeling boxed in. “When I reflect now, I can’t think of those following years, [because there was] just a loss of control,” she admitted.
The Hunger Games made Jennifer Lawrence a global star, portraying Katniss from tribute to revolutionary. Starring alongside Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, the saga wrapped with Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015.

Yesterday evening, a rumour hit social media claiming that Marvel Studios is making moves to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The news has received a mixed response, though many fans are eager to see the character back on screen.
After Boseman passed away, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirmed that T'Challa had also died. Shuri inherited the mantle and the sequel ended by revealing the hero secretly had a son with Nakia, a young boy also named T'Challa.
While Avengers: Secret Wars' Black Panther may be a Variant, we think Toussaint is going to be aged up before picking up where his father left off in the Mutant Saga. With all that in mind, we're now taking a look at the actors who could take over this role in the MCU.

Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne have to be two of the most beautiful Hollywood actors of our times. Be it modelling, acting, or promotions, the stars have managed to establish themselves as top dogs in the industry time and again. In Ed Harris‘s over-40-year career he has surprisingly never won an Oscar or an Emmy, despite four nominations from the motion picture academy and two from the TV academy. Let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Harris’s 15 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.

Hugh Jackman created one of his most fan-favorite films when he collaborated with director Darren Aronofsky for The Fountain. Aronofsky is primarily known for his psychological tales incorporating surreal and unsettling facets. Despite not being a critical or commercial success like his other films, The Fountain later earned a cult classic tag.

What’s the difference between a psychological horror and a psychological thriller?
Well, it could be as simple as comparing the style of Stanley Kubrick to that of David Fincher. One is in love with emotional turmoil, and the other paints vivid images of realistic terror.
Psychological horror is not about catch and release — the formula of most horror thrillers. Most horror films you can think of fall into the cozy genres of suspense thriller (Silence of the Lambs), psychological thriller (Jacob’s Ladder), or slasher (The Strangers).

You’re outrunning Art the Clown, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger when you watch a thriller. When you watch a psychological thriller, you’re figuring out a mystery in real time with the protagonist.
You’re figuring out the horrible truth of your fate, like Grace in The Others, or uncovering a diabolical plot, like in Chris in Get Out.

Rosemary's Baby (1968), is a groundbreaking horror film that redefined the genre. Its power comes from its psychological complexity, blending supernatural horror with real fears. The film tells the story of Rosemary, a young woman manipulated by her husband and neighbors, a torturous pregnancy, and an iconic movie ending. This premise taps into anxieties about bodily autonomy, trust, and motherhood.
What makes Rosemarys Baby influential is its subtle approach to horror. Instead of relying on jump scares or gore, it builds suspense through paranoia and psychological dread. Viewers are left questioning what is real, sharing Rosemarys escalating terror. The film also pioneered the use of urban everyday settings, showing that horror could thrive in the ordinary and familiar, in contrast to remote castles and mansions in earlier horror. With a newly released prequel Apartment 7A, Rosemary's Baby's themes of control, manipulation, and betrayal resonate deeply, making it a classic that continues...

Russell Crowes divisive epic movie Noah gets a glowing review from VFX artists 10 years after its original release. Inspired by Noahs Ark, the biblical drama follows a man (Crowe), chosen by God to construct a vessel for his family and various animals to brave an impending apocalyptic flood. Along with Crowe, the cast of Noah includes Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, and more. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, earned over $359 million at the box office, and though met with polarizing reactions, audiences praised the effects.
In the recent "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGI" video, Corridor Crew looked at several moments from Noah. When it came to digitally creating all of those animals, Niko explained: "This is so impressive because you have to have an artist effectively model each one of these creatures." Taylor Swift collects records by the armful, from concert ticket sales to album sales to awards hauls. She made history again in 2024 at the MTV Video Music Awards where she won five times, bringing her total to 28. That surpassed Beyonce‘s record of 27 wins to make Swift the most honored artist in the history of the VMAs. Scroll down for the list of her every victory at the awards.
Swift wasn’t always the juggernaut she is now. In fact, she lost her very first nomination at the VMAs: Best New Artist in 2008 for “Teardrops on My Guitar,” back when she was recording music as strictly a country artist. And her first triumph at the awards, Best Female Video in 2009 for “You Belong with Me,” was infamously marred by the interruption of Kanye West who insisted that Beyonce deserved the award instead.
But Swift got many more chances to make speeches uninterrupted.

Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming project with Scorsese, Die, My Love, aligns perfectly with her best performances. Lawrence shines in roles of struggling female protagonists, mirroring her past successes in complex characters. Collaborating with Scorsese could lead Lawrence to follow in the footsteps of DiCaprio as a favorite actor for the legendary director.
Although Jennifer Lawrence is lined up to star in Martin Scorsese's highly anticipated Frank Sinatra biopic, this film isn't even the most exciting project coming from the actor-director duo. In 2012, Jennifer Lawrence dazzled Hollywood by taking on the title role in The Hunger Games franchise. Throughout the 2010s, Lawrence continued racking up roles alongside notable actors and directors such as Bradley Cooper, David O. Russell, and Darren Aronofsky. In more recent years, Lawrence's movie roles have slowed down, but it seems that she will be making a dramatic return alongside legendary director Martin Scorsese.

Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to star in and produce a new movie called “Why Don’t You Love Me?” based on a graphic novel of the same name. This dark comedy is being made by A24, the same studio behind many of Lawrence’s most interesting films.
The story follows a married couple, Claire and Mark, who seem pretty miserable. As their relationship falls apart, strange things start happening that make them question what’s really going on. One scene proved to be too much for the actress, and she decided that she would never return to that character ever again.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) on Disney+ restored cut songs & included bonus acoustic tracks, but "Me!" still never made it in. The divisive nature of "Me!" likely kept it off The Eras Tour set list, as it might not have been well-received at the concert. Although it would thrive as a live performance, "Me!" may never see the stage due to its contentious reputation among fans.
Not even the extra allotted time in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) on Disney+ could spare the fate of Taylor Swift's most divisive single. On The Eras Tour, Swift plays three-and-a-half hours worth of her biggest hits and most beloved tracks from almost every era of her long-spanning career. Upon its release in theaters on October 13, 2023, The Eras Tour movie cut a number of songs from the show's regular set list to trim the concert's lengthy runtime. Two months later,...

Sebastian Stan is exploring roles beyond the shadow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and making quite a good impression out of it. Also, it seems the actor has a newfound interest in the horror genre. Stan appeared in two horror movies recently, including Mimi Cave’s Fresh and his most recent A Different Man.
Sebastian Stan in A Different Man
Stan has tested his tolerance level for a role as well. While his appearance in horror movies is well adjacent to the actor, one horror movie frightened the MCU star. Jennifer Lawrence, who led the movie, also endured intense nightmares.

Darren Aronofsky is one of the Hollywood directors who has created a legacy by making some of the most disturbing movies, including Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and Mother! Particularly, Mother! was frightening, and its disturbing elements were not exclusive to the audience.

Batsheva Hay on outfitting Chloe Fineman for Maya Singer’s Unhinged: “I’m used to producing, making garments and putting on fashion shows. But an actual scripted piece - it was very interesting to me how much work went into it.” Photo: Anne Katrin Titze
In 2018/19 Batsheva Hay's clothes found their way onto Jacqueline Durran's costume design inspiration board for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (for which Durran won her second Oscar after Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley).
On the opening weekend of her newly launched shop Batsheva spoke with me about the clothes designed by Oscar-winner Holly Waddington for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon (costumes by the multiple Oscar-nominated Jacqueline West), Maya Singer and Morgan Spector’s Mother!!, starring Rebecca Hall and the directors, featuring dresses by Batsheva and a dangerous sourdough (a highlight of the 20th...

Austin Butler is continuing his auteur collaborations, this time partnering up with Darren Aronofsky.
Butler, who was Oscar-nominated for his breakout transformative “Elvis” role, is set to lead Aronofsky’s upcoming feature “Caught Stealing.” Novelist Charlie Huston will adapt his own work for the screen. Protozoa is producing the Sony crime thriller. The novel is the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy series.
“Caught Stealing” was originally set for an adaptation in 2013 with Patrick Wilson cast in the lead role, now occupied by Butler. The story follows Hank Thompson, a former high school baseball prospect turned alcoholic bartender who gets caught up in a treasure hunt through New York City. A sadistic police officer tries to outrun Thompson, hitmen, and mobsters to find the treasure. Alec Baldwin was cast as the cop in the 2013 iteration that was slated to be written by David Hayter and directed by Wayne Kramer.

Recent award-winning movies are divisive due to controversial themes, bold aesthetics, and complex plots. Audience reactions often echo critics' divided opinions on films like Don't Look Up, The Hateful Eight, and Eternals. Conflicting views on movies like Mother! and Prometheus are fueled by strong themes and legacy expectations.
Some recent movies that have won multiple prestigious awards or broken records at the box office were incredibly divisive, with critics either hating them or loving them. This is reflected in flat-out contradictory statements from different well-known reviewers, or middling Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores from the two extremes balancing each other out. This might be caused by the movie focusing on controversial subject matter, featuring bold aesthetic choices that some people find overwhelming, or comprising allegedly confusing plots.
Meanwhile, general audiences might be similarly divided. Movies including Don't Look Up, Babylon, and, of course, Star Wars: The Last Jedi split audiences...

There is a lot going on in the new trailer for Jennifer Lopez’s This Is Me…Now: A Love Story.
In the trailer, the singer navigates a sex-addict anonymous-styled meeting after friends stage an intervention, citing her three marriages as a red flag. She also dances, sings, reflects on childhood, and appears in mythological settings in the span of less than three minutes.
“I learned the hard way — not all love stories have a happy ending,” Lopez says in a voiceover in the arresting visual, featuring musical-type dance numbers...
