There's a gritty little feature called Badsville that's been making the rounds on the festival circuit, and is now on VOD for you to enjoy. Well, as much as one can enjoy graphic violence and toxic masculinity --- however, the script has heart, and the struggles the film portrays are universal. Directed by April Mullen (Below Her Mouth), the film takes place in a crime-ridden, small town that essentially eats its young. Filmed in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, you can feel both the heat as well as the oppressive atmopshere of the place rising from the screen. Badsville centers on the animosity and violence that perpetuates between rival gangs the Kings and the Aces. However, the story centers specifically between Wink (Ian McLaren) and his...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future. This week, we look back on a monumental year, for better or worse.
Ask enough women in Hollywood about being a woman in Hollywood, and eventually a theme emerges: conversation is great, and the acknowledgement of the skewed numbers and lack of equality is essential. It’s a discussion that needs to happen, but won’t it be great when we can stop just talking and put words into action?
It’s a two-pronged dream — that conversation will move past chatter and produce real results, and that those results will create a world where inequality becomes a thing of the past.
But talking has a way of being one-sided and, as it turns out, there needed to be one more step in between the chatter and actually moving things forward. That finally happened in 2017, the year people stopped talking,...

In the early ’80s, Donna Deitch was a recent film school grad with no feature credits looking make a lesbian romance — one that didn’t end with killing its heroines. Without the help of Kickstarter or industry backing, she launched an unorthodox grassroots campaign that eventually gained the support of Gloria Steinem, Lily Tomlin, and Stockard Channing. The result was a hit at Sundance in 1986 that went on to become a groundbreaking lesbian classic that still resonates today.

Hanky codes. Septum piercings. A knowing glance. Since we’ve been around (at least as far back as ancient Greece), queer people have learned to read between the lines to find kindred spirits out in the world — and onscreen. While straight cinephiles scratched their heads at the recent claim that Jennifer Kent’s “The Babadook” is a queer icon, Lgbt audiences were unsurprised: We have always known how to make our own fun.

Most diehard “Star Wars” fans swear by “The Empire Strikes Back” as the best entry in the franchise, and for a couple of decades, this was an accurate perception. The release of George Lucas’ prequels only further enhanced appreciation for the first sequel in the series, which is rich in imagination and intrigue. But while the “Star Wars” universe continues to expand in scope, nothing has nailed the possibilities of this sci-fi/fantasy excursion better than the animated 2003 “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, and yet nobody talks about it.
That’s partly because the Clone Wars story has revised and expanded into a new series that launched in 2008, which also tells the story of the dramatic showdown between warring factions that took place in between the events of episodes II and III. But it’s also because Tartakovsy’s “Clone Wars” isn’t often seen as a...

‘Below Her Mouth’ Is What Lesbian Porn Would Look Like If It Were Actually Made By Lesbians — Review
There is no scissoring in “Below Her Mouth.” That is about the only position missing from this 90-minute sex movie, which feels like an attempt to singlehandedly correct every misrepresentation of lesbian sex ever put onscreen. Many straight male directors have selflessly tackled the trope, including Park Chan-wook with “The Handmaiden” and Abdellatif Kechiche with “Blue is the Warmest Color.” While those films have artistic merit on their side, each feature laughably acrobatic scissoring positions, which no one should attempt at home, and could only have been imagined by someone who has never actually had lesbian sex.

This weekend marked the final box office frame of the spring movie season, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicking off the summer movie season next weekend. While the first weekend in May traditionally marks the start of summer at the box office, the last weekend in April is generally a quiet run at theaters, and that tradition didn't change this year. Four newcomers hit theaters this past Friday, but none could come close to dethroning The Fate of the Furious, which took the top spot for a third weekend in a row with $18.3 million. Which will likely be its last frame at the top. Surprising newcomers Baahubali: The Conclusion and How to Be a Latin Lover both over-performed, while The Circle and Sleight underperformed.

Straight men and gay women may both find much to appreciate in April Mullen’s Canadian indie drama about the romance between a female roofer — yes, that’s right— and the supposedly straight woman she seduces into an affair. Below Her Mouth (you can use your imagination regarding the title) is an undeniably steamy effort that delivers plenty of heat in its sex scenes, while falling significantly short in dramatic terms. Theatrical exposure will be minimal, but the film should do fine in home-video formats that offer the advantage of fast-forwarding.

Certainly, we need more films about women from women's perspective, and more films about lesbian love/sex/relationships told from that perspective as well. Unfortunately, such efforts do not always make for great films. Such is the case with Below Her Mouth. While a valiant attempt to tell a sweet and sexy story of two women who fall in loust and love in a short time, weak acting and a weaker script make for a (mostly) uninteresting film. Dallas (Erika Linder), a roofer, moves in and out of relationships the way many move in and out of clothing. Having just broken up with her latest girlfriend, one day she spies Jasmine (Natalie Krill) and is instantly entranced. A chance meeting later that night turns to kissing. Being...

Destined to be one of the year’s most provocative releases, April Mullen’s Below Her Mouth is an erotic tour de force of uninhibited filmmaking exploring the nature of intimacy, sexuality, and the female gaze led by two extraordinary performances by Erika Linder and Natalie Krill. Dallas (Linder) is a young roofer making her living in Toronto; early in the film she proves to be emotionally unavailable as she abruptly breaks up with her yuppie girlfriend Joslyn (Mayko Nguyen) and moves out into a studio apartment. While on a job in an upscale neighborhood she encounters Jasmine (Krill), a young fashion editor that’s about to be engaged to Rile (Sebastain Pigott), who by all measures seems to be a decent man, invested in their relationship even if he’s unable to offer the kind of connection and emotional support she longs for.

The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. Even while facing a steep second-weekend decrease of 61.1%, The Fate of the Furious still managed to come away with an easy win, taking in $38.4 million against five new releases, two of which didn't even crack the top 10. This weekend it will only face one newcomer in a true wide release, Stx Entertainment's The Circle, with Pantelion's latest comedy How to Be a Latin Lover and Blumhouse Tilt's Sleight also opening in several national markets, but with a much lower theater count. While Fast 8 will likely suffer another sizable drop in its third frame, it should come out on top with a projected take of $18.2 million.
Last weekend, Fate of the Furious actually added 19 more theaters for a grand total of 4,329, which was still nearly twice the rollout of most of last weekend's newcomers. This weekend, Box Office Mojo reports that The Circle will arrive in more than 2,800 theaters, while How to Be a Latin Lover...

After setting a worldwide box office record, Universal's blockbuster The Fate of the Furious was expected to suffer a rather big second weekend drop, but still come out on top. Both predictions did in fact come true, with this high-octane blockbuster dropping a whopping 60.8%. But it still came out on top with an estimated $38.6 million. While there were five new movies arriving in theaters, two didn't even crack the top 10, and the rest barely managed to underperform.
Box Office Mojo reports that Fate of the Furious even added 19 theaters this weekend for a total theater count of 4,329, earning a decent $8,936 per-screen average. This weekend's tally brings its total up to $163.5 million domestic and a whopping $744.8 million international for a worldwide tally of $908.3 million. It's possible that it could break Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record of the fastest movie to reach $1 billion, with the Disney blockbuster taking just 12 days to accomplish that feat.
Box Office Mojo reports that Fate of the Furious even added 19 theaters this weekend for a total theater count of 4,329, earning a decent $8,936 per-screen average. As expected, Universal's The Fate of the Furious debuted in grand fashion last weekend, setting a new box office record for a global opening weekend of $531.9 million, although its $98.7 million domestic debut was far from any sort of record. Over the past few years, the Fast & Furious franchise has established its dominance in the month of April, typically posting huge debuts and repeating atop the box office charts for several weeks in a row, before the summer movie season officially gets under way. The Fate of the Furious is expected to follow that pattern, repeating atop the box office with $49.2 million, easily beating out five new films arriving in nationwide release.
Box Office Mojo reports that, of the five new releases, most will debut in less than half the theaters that Fast & Furious 8 debuted in last weekend (4,310). Warner Bros.' Unforgettable will have the widest release of the bunch with roughly 2,350 theaters,...

Oscilloscope Laboratories has rounded out their ever-growing documentary slate with the recent purchase of Andrew Cohn’s “Night School” and Andrew Becker and Daniel Mehrer’s “Santoalla,” and the indie distributor is planning summer releases for both features.
Cohn’s latest documentary outing premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Set in Indianapolis, which has one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the country, the doc follows “victims of circumstance and a broken system, Greg, Melissa, and Shynika are optimistic that they don’t need to be on the wrong side of statistics.” The film “observes their individual pursuits, fraught with the challenges of daily life and the broader systemic roadblocks faced by many Americans as they strive to improve their lives in the face of adversity.”
Oscilloscope will open the film theatrically on June 9 at the IFC Center in New York, with national expansion in the following weeks.

A steamy trailer has arrived for Below Her Mouth, the latest drama from actor-turned-director April Mullen. Penned by Stephanie Fabrizi, the film follows Jasmine (Natalie Krill), a successful fashion editor who has a stable relationship until she meets Dallas (Erika Linder) at a club. Though she rejects Dallas’ dogged confidence, she cannot seem to shake the surprise she has been struck by. Soon, she gives in to her baser instincts and the two set off on an affair that causes questions to arise in both their lives.
Judging from this trailer, Below Her Mouth looks to be intimately shot, with striking lighting and lush mise en scéne. The fact that only women wrote and directed the film assures that its focus on female pleasure is rid of the male gaze, a welcome change from the fetishization of lesbianism that is often depicted in Hollywood. Ahead of a release next month,...

The film shows Hepnarova as a lonely lesbian outsider from a coldhearted family who doubted her place in society and was unable to connect with others. Her feelings of isolation eventually lead her, at just twenty-two years old, to drive a truck into a group of people waiting to board a tram in Prague. Before the murder, she sent a letter to two newspapers explaining her action as revenge for the hatred against her by her family and the world.
She was later found to be sane and sentenced to death, making her the last woman executed in Czechoslovakia.

An unexpected romance can feel like a bolt of lightning, a powerful experience that must be felt to be truly understood. April Mullen’s latest film “Below Her Mouth” captures that feeling in its story of two women who suddenly and passionately fall in love.
Successful fashion editor Jasmine (Natalie Krill) lives with her fiancé, Rile (Sebastian Pigott), but one night out in the city, she meets Dallas (Erika Linder, in her film debut), a roofer recently out of a relationship. Jasmine is surprised when Dallas confidently hits on her. Though she turns her down, Jasmine can’t get Dallas out of her head, and in a manner of days, the two women embark on a steamy affair. Their relationship feels like a fantasy away from Jasmine’s plans with Rile, but reality soon rears its ugly head, and Jasmine is forced confront the profound changes their romance has brought into her life.

After a promising initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival has delivered more titles with their full Canadian slate. Among the line-up is Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, Bruce MacDonald‘s new feature Weirdos, Deepa Mehta‘s Anatomy of Violence, as well as Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan, which we have the first trailer for today.
We said in our review from Cannes, “Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and a Bear is a film that suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Like an indie playlist stuck on constant shuffle, unapologetically reveling in a sort of manic unclassifiable genre. This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but, for some reason, Nguyen’s scattershot tonal shifts — which hop between a romance on the rocks; a self-serious study of grieving; and a surreal buddy comedy — can prove quite jarring.
