Boots Riley is finally back in the director's chair with the first I'm A Virgo trailer. Having gotten his start as a rapper and activist with the Oakland-based group The Coup, Riley eventually broke into filmmaking with 2018's Sorry to Bother You, the surreal dark comedy centered on a Black telemarketer on a rapid rise in his company after adopting a white voice, only to begin alienating himself from his activist friends and learning of the company's dark dealings. Scoring widespread acclaim and a solid box office haul, Sorry to Bother You quickly put Riley on the map in the film and TV world.

Magical realism comes to Oakland, California in the first teaser trailer for “I’m a Virgo,” a quirky comedy series coming to Prime Video this summer.

The Amazon series comes from creator Boots Riley (“Sorry to Bother You”) and is described as “a darkly-comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride” that tells the story of Cootie, a young Black man from Oakland who happens to be 13 feet tall. He grew up hidden away from the world, with comic books and TV shows his only exposure to the outside. When he finally escapes, he experiences the beauty and contradictions of the real world – and there are few places more beautiful and contradictory than Oakland. He forms friendships, finds love, navigates awkward situations, and encounters his idol, a superhero named The Hero (Walton Goggins). “I’m a Virgo,” Cootie tells his friends at the end of the trailer. “And Virgos love adventure.”

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind “Bad Boys For Life” and Cannes’ Midnight Screening title “Rebel,” are developing “2000,” a film based on Dirk Bracke’s “Straks doet het geen pijn meer.” It will mark the pair’s return to Belgium after lining up “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+ and “Batgirl” for HBO Max.

Bracke’s book, whose title translates into the phrase “soon it will be alright,” is being adapted by El Arbi, Fallah and Bulle Decarpentries (“Carnivores”).

The project, which will be El Arbi and Fallah’s first film in Flemish, reteams the pair with Nabil Ben Yadir at 10.80 Films (“Les Barons”), with whom they made “Gangsta,” and with Bracke who penned the book on which “Black,” their critically acclaimed sophomore outing, was based. “Black” won a flurry of awards, including Toronto’s Discovery award.
