Vicky Kaushal-led Chhaava is ready to surprise everyone the way it is trending in advance booking at the Indian box office. After a solid response to the teaser and the trailer, everyone expected the film to do well, but now, it is clearly heading for a much bigger start. Backed by strong performance in Maharashtra, the upcoming Bollywood biggie has already surpassed the day 1 pre-sales of Gully Boy, which is Bollywood’s biggest opener on Valentine’s Day.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, the magnum opus is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The concept itself is a major attraction, and the makers have played well so far with promos, resulting in good buzz and excitement at the ground level. In Maharashtra, it will behave like a front-loaded affair, and the pre-sales indicate it.

James Cameron Is Finally Addressing a Fan Complaint in Avatar 3
Image
Quick LinksAvatar 3 Won't Be as Black and WhiteThe Avatar Series Prioritizes Special Effects Over Nuanced StorytellingDune Is What Avatar Wishes It Was

James Cameron's Avatar franchise only has two entries so far, but it's still one of the most successful film franchises in the past two decades. Now, fans are looking forward to Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film, which will release in late 2025. While some might be worried that it's "more of the same," Cameron is already promising changes that will shift the franchise for the better.

Something that Cameron is already promising is that Avatar 3 will have more nuance with its plot and characters. This addresses a major complaint about the first two movies, but these narrative elements might have helped those films, too. In fact, it all feels like a reaction to another franchise somewhat stealing Avatar's thematic thunder.

“You’re Hired!” Meet Rich Spirit, The Company That Stepped In To Back Controversial Donald Trump Movie ‘The Apprentice’, & Hear What’s Next For The New U.S. Indie Producer-Distributor
Image
Exclusive: When a company called Rich Spirit recently stepped in to fill a multi-million dollar hole on controversial Donald Trump movie The Apprentice after producer-financier Kinematics exited the project, many wondered: Who is Rich Spirit?

Today we can give you that answer and more, including an interview with founder James Shani about next steps.

Ali Abbasi-directed The Apprentice, starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as his fixer Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump, debuted to acclaim at Cannes but became bogged down by legal threats from the former President who took exception to the material. Then producers had to deal with main financier Kinematics — some of whose projects, including The Apprentice, have been backed by Trump supporter Dan Snyder — exiting the movie. All this got in the way of the team securing domestic distribution, which is now set with Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff for an October 11 release.

Harmony Korine and Travis Scott’s Infrared Film ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ Drops Trailer Ahead of Strip Club Screenings
Image
Rapper Travis Scott stars in the first trailer for his and director Harmony Korine’s indie film “Aggro Dr1ft,” which was shot entirely in infrared.

The short trailer is bathed in the starkly contrasted colors of the infrared lens, and it follows an assassin on his journey. “Breaking away from the traditional parameters of cinema, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ explores the onslaught of digital ephemera and interrogates modern life through the vernacular of video games. Shot entirely through an infrared lens, the film follows a Miami Beach hitman as he embarks on the relentless pursuit of his next target,” reads the logline.

“As it is, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ is visually thrilling but somewhat tedious to sit through — better as wallpaper than the main attraction,” wrote Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in his review. “Still, as with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ there’s wisdom in the generic quality of his script. Cameron was...

What Happened to Jonathan Majors?
Image
Ah Hollywood. The evil temptress where talent often overshadows any sort of character flaw. Many people claim it to be a new development with the advent of social media, where a person tweets out something dumb ten years ago only to have it brought back up when they have a new Netflix movie dropping. But actually, celebrities have seen their careers implode long before people posted pictures of their dinners online for the world to see. Think back to the story of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, one of the highest-paid silent film stars of the era whose talent and fame were overshadowed when a woman was assaulted and subsequently died at a party hosted by the famed comedian. Arbuckle was acquitted of the crimes, but his career never recovered. We have never seen a career implosion like we witnessed in 2023 when an emerging talent had a genuine break-out year that was...

Pictures: Paramount, Sony, 20th Century Fox

We’re only a handful of days into the New Year, but we’re already receiving news of what movies and TV shows will leave Netflix UK in February 2024.

In case you missed it, we’re also keeping track of all of the movies and TV shows leaving Netflix UK in January 2024. If you’re looking for the US removals list, you can find all the departures for those in our February list here.

As a reminder, we typically get word of Netflix removals around 30 days before they’re due to happen. Netflix removes titles because much of its library consists of licensed titles. These licensed titles are essentially rented to Netflix for a fixed period of time, and when that time is up, they’re removed from the platform.

Unlike the United States, Netflix UK doesn’t confirm or publicize its own list of removals,...

Woman who accused Jonathan Majors of assault, also arrested… for assault
Image
Jonathan Majors may have just gotten a break as far as his reputation goes, as Grace Jabbari – the woman who accused him of assault and harassment back in March – was arrested for “suspicion of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor criminal mischief”, according to The New York Times.

Grace Jabbari’s arrest was a result of a counterclaim from Jonathan Majors, who alleged that she was actually the one who assaulted him. However, Jabbari was not prosecuted and was released. She will, however, have to appear in court at a later date. Despite no prosecution, one does wonder how the public perception of Majors may change. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if there is indeed a shift; just as many declared Majors guilty immediately after his arrest – his talent agency dropped him the month after – there will most certainly be people that point to Jabbari’s arrest and pin her as the guilty one.

Travis Scott recently put himself forward for the currently vacant composer role on Marvel Studios' upcoming Blade reboot.

Rapper, singer/songwriter, and producer Scott expressed interest in overseeing Blade's score in a post on X. "Woke up thinking I would love to do the soundtrack to Blade," he wrote. Scott is certainly no stranger to film productions, having starred in, and developed music for, 2021's Gully. The musician also signed a movie development deal with independent studio A24 in August 2021. That said, there's no indication that Scott and Marvel Studios have actually discussed the possibility of him contributing to Blade's soundtrack at this stage.

Hulu New Releases: February 2022
Image
The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.

Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Hit BBC Gameshow Format ‘This is My House’ Returns for Season 2 – Global Bulletin
Image
Format

BBC One’s hit primetime gameshow “This is My House” has been renewed for an extended run of ten episodes in a 30-minute format.

The guessing game format created by Richard Bacon and U.S.-based TV producer Nick Weidenfeld will once again see four people all claim to be the same person and that “This Is My House.” A panel of celebrities will attempt to tell which “homeowner” is telling the truth and which are the actors.

The first season performed particularly well among younger audiences and was a rage on social media, the BBC said.

“I loved seeing the way the audience responded to the show. Especially on social media as it was happening,” Bacon said. “It’s given me the confidence to lean right into the absurd humor this time. Also, I’m proud of the fact it did so well with young audiences.”

Season 2 will...

Pop Smoke Receives Royal Tribute in ‘Demeanor’ Video With Dua Lipa
Image
Pop Smoke receives a Baroque-style tribute in the new video for “Demeanor,” the late rapper’s posthumous single with Dua Lipa.

Set during a lavish banquet/party in a castle on a hilltop, the video portrays Pop Smoke both as the subject of a divine portrait on the wall — mimicking The Last Supper — and as a ghostly cloud seated at the head of the table. Dua Lipa appears later in the clip, dressed as Marie Antoinette and showing up in multiple places around the banquet hall, dancing and feasting on the table spread.

Featuring performances from Jonathan Majors, Terrence Howard, Travis Scott, and more, the movie is unlike anything else out there and marks a major debut for Elderkin as a bonafide filmmaker.

Amber Heard Is Ready to Reunite with Jason Momoa for Aquaman 2
Image
Amber Heard is paying no mind to the critics consistently calling for her firing from Aquaman 2, as the actress fired back by expressing how excited she is to start filming. This week, director James Wan revealed that the upcoming superhero sequel will officially be called Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The sequel will bring back Jason Momoa as the titular Justice League member with Heard co-starring as Mera, reprising her role from the original movie.

The Aquaman 2 news reignited the fan campaign for Amber Heard to be fired from the sequel. On Twitter, her name was quickly trending as tens of thousands of people condemned Heard's involvement. It also led to more names being added to the growing petition on Change.org for the role of Mera to be recast, which has now garnered more than 1.84 million signatures. The backlash is certainly impossible to ignore, but it appears...

‘Gully’ Review: Like ‘Boyz n the Hood’ as an Indie Art Film
Image
There’s a certain kind of music-video director who will seize on the prospect of doing a movie as an opportunity to make a splash. It’s not hard to see why. In-demand video directors work with the hottest talent in the business, and their videos tend to be celebrated as four-minute bursts of genius. “Gully” is the first dramatic feature directed by Nabil Elderkin, the Australian-American director — usually credited simply as “Nabil” — who has made videos for Kanye West, Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Frank Ocean, the Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Diddy, Shrillex, and Antony and the Johnsons. You can glimpse his talent in “Gully” — not because it’s a film of showoff imagery (it’s actually got a rather unvarnished low-budget aesthetic), but because the movie looks, for a while, like it’s trying to be “Boyz n the Hood” meets “A Clockwork Orange,...

Kelvin Harrison & Charlie Plummer in First Trailer for L.A. Film 'Gully'
Gully (2019)
"Who's responsible... for my misery?!?" Paramount has debuted a official trailer for an indie crime drama set in Los Angeles titled Gully, made by filmmaker Nabil Elderkin, making his first narrative feature film after tons of music videos previously. This originally premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, finally available to watch this summer in select theaters and VOD. Three teens living in L.A., all victims of extreme childhoods, wreak a hedonistic riot across the city over the course of 48 hours, all unbound by societal norms. They take us on a rip-roaring ride of drugs and murder across Los Angeles... The ensemble cast features Kelvin Harrison Jr., Charlie Plummer, Jacob Latimore, Jonathan Majors, Amber Heard, Travis Scott, John Corbett, and Terrence Howard. This looks like one wild and crazy film. As fun as it seems, I haven't heard much about it which isn't a good sign...

‘Gully’ Trailer: Three Friends Try To Survive Their Violent Neighborhood In Nabil Elderkin’s Drama
Image
At the beginning of the new trailer for the upcoming drama, “Gully,” the film presents itself as a fairly typical coming-of-age story about three friends growing up in Los Angeles. However, that idea gets thrown out of the window pretty quickly when you see what the film really has up its sleeve, as it evolves into a thriller with obvious video game imagery and violence, as the life of the three leads gets thrown into chaos.

Film Review: Gully Boy (2019) by Zoya Akhtar
Image
Sparkling lights reflect on the car. Murad is the driver – he drives that expensive car for his boss. It’s parked in front of a star hotel and the privileged guests are talking and walking around. The camera pans on the intense eyes of Murad- he wants to break free. He hums – Apna Time Aayega (My or our time will come). And director Zoya Akhtar brings in the flavor of socialism in the epic story of victory of the underprivileged in “Gully Boy”, where dream meets reality.

Gully Boy is Screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival

Murad (Ranveer Singh) is a 22-year-old son of a chauffeur, Aftab (Vijay Raaz). Murad resides in Mumbai’s slum Dharavi. He is inclined to rap music and expresses his thoughts in writing as he writes his own songs. His abusive father gets married for a second time and brings in his new wife,...

Amber Heard’s Reportedly Had Talks With Sony For A Marvel Role As Well
Amber Heard has only appeared in one movie since she played the female lead in the highest-grossing DC Comics adaptation ever made, and last year’s low budget drama Gully slipped entirely under the radar. The actress may not have lost her job starring in a major Warner Bros. franchise after ex-husband Johnny Depp was booted from Fantastic Beasts thanks to coming out on the losing end of his libel case against a British tabloid, but the negative publicity could soon see offers dry up for the Dceu’s Mera.

So far, Heard has ignored any and all of the backlash surrounding her continued involvement in the superhero sequel, and has even suggested that the campaigns against her are being funded in an effort to damage her reputation. Seeing as the initial petition to have her replaced as Mera in Aquaman 2 has gathered over a million signatures, if her...

Oscars invite 819 new members in 2020: Complete list by branch (and 2014-2019 totals too)
Image
This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.

While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.

For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Humour : Filmfare awards 2020 is a spiritual awakening
?Filmfare awards 2020 is a spiritual awakening for this country?, says Mani Kapoor ?note?d filmmaker and spokesperson of Filmfare awards in an exclusive chat with this author. Excerpts from the conversation.

It?s the morning after the coveted night at Guwahati, as the twitterati are losing their cool and keeping my phone hysterically buzzing with post ranting for what is believed to be the most namakool (ridiculous) award?s night. Zoya Akhtar directed Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt has swept the awards night by bagging best picture, actor, director, and actress etc, leaving the much deserving Uri: The Surgical Strike, Sonchiriya, Hamid, The Tashkent Files, Batla House, and Section 375 way behind in the race. The nonstop vibration on my phone gets interrupted by a ring tone. It?s noted producer Mani Kapoor on the line and is highly elated.

Hello Mani this side, many many congrats he says,...
