Superman is one of the most argued-about characters in comic book fiction. From “Umm actually, in Injustice…” to “Goku would go Super Saiyan and then…” and also “He is bland. He has too many powers!” which leads to the biggest misconception: “Superman is boring.”

Wrong. That is the simplest way to put it.

To go further, we need to understand why we are getting a new take on Superman this summer with James Gunn's upcoming movie.

Superman has been misrepresented in all the types of media for a few decades now.

It's time to remember who Superman really is

We have had the darker take of Superman's story on the big screen with Man of Steel by Zack Snyder, where Superman snaps Zod's neck to save civilians. Many discussions have happened since then about this take and the DC Extended Universe. The Dceu is no longer around, having suffered numerous box-office failures.

Anticipation of James Gunn'sSupermancontinues to brew ahead of its summer release, and DC Universe fans are eager to see the upcoming iteration. Among its star-studded cast, which includes David Corenswet as the titular character, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, is Edi Gathegi, who will make history as the first actor to portray Michael Holt, Aka Mister Terrific, in a live-action cinematic feature. Michael Holt/Mister Terrific is consistently depicted as one of the most intelligent characters in the DC Universe, holding 14 PhDs and being a self-made tech millionaire with "Third Level Intellect." While Mister Terrific's cerebral power is his greatest strength, he is also an Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon.

For years, NetherRealm Studios operated like clockwork, reliably alternating between their brutal Mortal Kombat tournaments and the super-powered clashes of Injustice.

However, they broke that trend with Mortal Kombat 1 immediately following Mortal Kombat 11, breaking the expected Mk/Injustice cycle.

Now, it seems the winds are shifting once more. Support for Mortal Kombat 1 appears to be slowing, with the recent launch of a "Definitive Edition" often signaling the winding down of active development before a studio pivots to its next major endeavor. NetherRealm themselves have hinted as much on social media.

A major positive of the original Batman Ninja film is its unique cast. Warner Bros. Japan infuses Batman's rogues with a feudal style in a twisted alternate reality. Thankfully, Batman and his clan successfully break the Quake Engine and restore that version of Japan to the real world to end the story on a satisfying note.

Or so fans thought. Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League picks up with the heroes returning to reality and realizing all isn't well. They have to head back to a new version of Japan, (i.e. Hinomoto), to fight a sinister Injustice League. In the process, this sequel charts out an action-packed sequence that subverts DC Comic characters, both visually and in terms of their personality.

The first video games based on James Gunn's and Peter Safran's DC Universe are still years away from being revealed, but the co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios have revealed they are actively working with the various WB Games teams.

Speaking at a DC Studios presentation, the duo explained that they are working closely with the WB Games division, assisting studios like Mortal Kombat creator NetherRealm and Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady on character design and story.

“We work incredibly closely with Jb Perrette [CEO and President, Global Streaming and Games], who runs that division, and it's really the first time it's ever been this way at Warner Brothers,” Safran explained. “James and I sit with literally the guys that run the studios underneath Jb, whether it's NetherRealm or whether it's Rocksteady, sit with them and talk about characters and stories that we're interested in and that they're interested in.”

Marvel Rivals has proven that hero shooters aren’t quite dead yet. But the biggest reason for its success isn’t its gameplay but rather the excellent execution of the Marvel IP. It might also be the perfect time for DC to start cooking something up because NetEase recently laid off a portion of its Seattle-based team and it’d be pretty cool if DC picked them up. One of the interesting and relatively unknown characters set to make his big screen debut in James Gunn's Superman is "Mister Terrific." He first graced DC's pages in 1997's Spectre #54 (written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Tom Mandrake). On-screen, he will be played by Edi Gathegi and is supposed to be "the main character of those [other] characters [in the movie]."

Previously, he appeared live on the CW's Arrow (Echo Kellum) and had a few stints in animated projects, one was voiced by the Cosby-outing comedian Hannibal Burress.

They have been given amazing powers--some cosmic, others mutant, and a few elite humans. Mister Terrific is the third smartest character in all DC lore, next to Lex Luthor and the Atom, Ray Palmer.

All-Star Superman writer Grant Morrison couldn’t understand Superman’s evil turn after Lois Lane’s death in Injustice. The comic storyline that ran from 2013 to 2016 saw Superman and Batman at odds after the former descended into complete villainy. After Joker’s evil plot ends in the death of a pregnant Lois Lane, the Man of Steel forms the totalitarian One Earth Regime to end all violence.

Batman doesn’t believe in Superman’s new League and builds an insurgency to fight back against the Regime. What follows is a violent conflict within the Justice League that has some costly outcomes, including the death of Green Arrow. Warning: Spoilers for Batman and Robin #17Dc is dangerously close to repeating the same mistake it has made dozens of times before with Batman and Robin, and I am begging for it to stop. The dynamic duo are one of the most iconic elements of the DC Universe, but as of late, it feels like the characters are falling into old habits. I’m worried that the company will rehash an old storyline after the characters have just moved past it without making the choice feel justified.

DC animated movies are not afraid to go dark. R-rated movies have been performing well and are appreciated by mature audiences around the world. Joker and Deadpool are perfect examples that set the precedent for more superhero-related projects to follow. It's always interesting to see fan-favorite characters going a step further than fans are used to seeing.

DC hasn't shied away from being gory and brutal in the animated universe. They never hold back with their R-rated movies, which care very little about being family-friendly, showing endless brutal kills from DC's heroes and villains alike. Superman goes on a brutal killing rampage in Injustice, while Batman faces the knife-wielding Jack the Ripper in Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.

David Corenswet's Dcu Superman stars in a sweet homage to the Man of Steel's earliest cartoons and James Gunn's upcoming Superman movie. Gunn's Superman takes inspiration from storylines such as Kingdom Come and All-Star Superman, as well as the Man of Steel's earliest comic book appearances. The Dcu's version of Superman seems to be aiming for a timeless portrayal of the character, with a somewhat retrofuturistic Metropolis informing his superhero career.

Illustrator and DC fan Dylan Odom shares a fan-made Superman animation on Instagram, starring David Corenswet's Superman as a 1940s cartoon version of the DC hero inspired by the famous 1940s Fleischer Superman animated shorts. The video shows Corenswet's Superman saving the little girl from the trailer, fighting the movie's mystery masked villain, and jumping from the Daily Planet's decorative globe. Welcome one and all to the third, and possibly final, part of my theories regarding the potential for an Injustice 3 game!

For those who missed the previous two, I'll briefly explain what each one was about. The first part dealt with what the story of Injustice 3 could be about based on the good ending from Injustice 2, while the second part was my theories as to which group of heroes would make the best playable characters for an Injustice 3. Now, onto the part that excites me the most; who should be the main villain(s) of Injustice 3? In no particular order, read on to find out!

1. Darkseid

There are many things that DC Comics fans are longing for, but a third Injustice video game is definitely on that list. It's something we've been discussing since completing Injustice 2 and, with that having come out in 2017, it's been some time indeed.

With that in mind, let's do some more theorizing, this time about which characters could appear in Injustice 3 if it happens. To be honest, there are so many DC characters that haven't been used in the Injustice games that it would be impossible to list them all, so let's look at some of the ones that I want to see the most and the ones that fans have been clamoring over for years. 

Magical characters

Let's begin by talking about the magical characters of the DC Universe, because most of them haven't received much attention in these games. While characters like Swamp Thing and Shazam were playable characters in the previous games,...

The Injustice franchise of video games and tie-in comics have received mixed reviews from fans and critics, specifically when it comes to the brutality of that version of Superman and his fall from grace as he evolved from hero to an evil tyrant. Despite many of these views, the Injustice universe has intrigued fans for over a decade at this point, and the last game, Injustice 2, came out all the way back in 2017, with no concrete news as to the fate of a Injustice 3 down the line.

However, it's always fun to just let the imagination run wild and theorize what a potential Injustice 3 storyline could look like. So, come with me through a world where some of our greatest heroes have become mankind's greatest enemies.

Injustice 2's two endings explained

After starring as Green Arrow in Smallville, Justin Hartley went on to play Superman himself in DC's animated film Injustice. The movie will be streaming on Max starting Jan. 1.

Hartley takes on the lead role of the evil Clark Kent / Superman in Injustice, with Anson Mount starring opposite him as the voice of Batman. The animated movie is based on the prequel comic series of the NetherRealm Studios video game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and is set in an alternate timeline from the main DC Universe. In the Injustice continuity, Superman descends into madness after The Joker tricks him into killing a pregnant Lois Lane and detonating a nuclear bomb that destroys all of Metropolis. Superman goes on to turn Earth into a police force, bent on enforcing "global peace", prompting Batman and other DC heroes to form an underground resistance.

Throughout the history of the DC Universe, there have been many villain introductions that are considered particularly impressive. As the heroes and villains of DC comics rank among some of the most iconic figures in pop culture, there have been many movies and TV shows adapting them to the screen. The movies of the Dceu alone brought numerous villains to life in live-action, with many more having been adapted in unrelated TV shows and movies as well.

With some many excellent antagonists appearing, its only fitting that they receive appropriately impressive entrances. For example, the characters of the Arrowverse faced off against many fascinating adversaries, with especially memorable scenes introducing the DC villains to audiences. In both film and TV, there is a rich history of truly fascinating and fear-inspiring debuts for these characters, marking their importance in the world alongside the heroes of the DC Universe.

The CW's Superman & Lois just released the first episode of its fourth and final season. After an intense run, the beloved DC television series is preparing to say goodbye with an emotional goodbye, and Lex Luthor will be a big part of the series.

The CW's version of Lex Luthor in Superman & Lois is played by The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz.
