The Apple TV+ show, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is changing everything we thought we knew about the Monsterverse. For years, it seemed like humanity had only discovered the Hollow Earth in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, we now know that Monarch was secretly exploring it as far back as the 1960s, during a mission called Operation Hourglass.

Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez has surprise released a new covers album featuring renditions of songs by Taylor Swift and The Smiths.

Even now in 2024, it's wild to realize that humanity has yet to explore every inch of the planet, with a staggering percentage of the Earth's oceans having only been mapped by satellites. Although it feels like we've reached an age where there's little mystery left in the terrestrial, there still exists so much possibility on our planet before we even begin to consider other planets or galaxies beyond.

Although the theory of a hollow Earth in real life holds about as much veracity as a flat Earth, the concept has become a delightful metaphor in the MonsterVerse series of films for the exploration of new realms, continuing a tradition from classic monster movies like the original "King Kong" of adventure and discovery.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 has a positive outlook for renewal due to the warm reception and overall success of season 1. “Nowadays, you really can do almost anything with visual effects, but it’s a factor of your budget and your time and there’s never enough of either,” Lawson Deming explains in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) about serving as the senior visual effects supervisor on “The Man in the High Castle.” Deming is nominated at the Emmys again for Best Visual Effects, specifically his company Barnstorm VFX’s work on the third season finale “Jahr Null,” which climaxes with the Statue of Liberty destruction that he cites as “the most ambitious sequence we’ve ever done on a show.”

Ronald D. Moore wants his upcoming “For All Mankind” television series to go where most alt-history stories don’t dare to venture: In a direction that won’t relentlessly depress viewers.

Alt-history and historical drama television shows have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Take Prime Video’s smash hit “The Man in the High Castle,” which presents a dystopia where the Axis powers prevailed during World War II. Drew Boughton has served in that capacity for The Man in the High Castle for all three seasons of the show so far on Amazon’s Prime Video network, and his vision has earned him two Emmy nods for seasons 1 and 2 and an Art Director’s Guild Excellence in Production Design award nomination for season 3. Last week it was reported that there were two Alien shows in development and that Ridley Scott was actually producing one of them. Apparently, those aren’t the only Alien series in the works!

According to Observer, there’s also an animated Alien series being planned! That series is said to be based on the video game Alien: Isolation and will feature R-rated content! The report goes on to say that the potential series will consist of seven episodes and will be developed at Axis Animation.

While I’ve had a blast here at Fantastic Fest this year, and I’ve been fortunate to have seen a bunch of incredible films, I must admit that the biggest surprise for me was Julius Avery’s Overlord, a bombastic and gritty horror actioner that pits a group of Us soldiers against a squadron of Nazis and their zombified science experiments that are running amok. Not that I necessarily had expected the film to be bad or anything—especially since historical horror is something that very much scratches a few cinematic itches for me as a viewer—but I just didn’t know much about the film overall, other than it was Bad Robot’s first R-rated production, and holy hell is it an absolute blast.
