Sometimes, the story you’re telling gets away from you. And it seems Taylor Sheridan, a masterful architect of narrative tension and gripping moral dilemmas, might have been caught in that very trap with Landman.
The visionary behind Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown—two shows filled with dirty politics, gritty characters, and suspense—appears to have lost his creative spark. While Yellowstone often earns its outlandishness, Landman presents an idea so flagrantly implausible that it makes even the most far-fetched Yellowstone storylines look like intricate masterpieces by comparison.
A still from Landman | Credits: Paramount Network
Landman suggests that a Mexican cartel, in a fit of daring audacity, would threaten a billion-dollar oil company on U.S. soil. And while that might sound like a juicy plot point to some, the reality of the situation feels more like a thoughtless misstep than a thrilling twist.
Cartels, oil men, and unrealistic risks:...

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.
The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.
It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!
SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies,...

South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19.
This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections.
‘Swarm’
New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef, respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. Given the Oscars on March 12 (note the festival sets their dates five years in advance), I understand that evening’s lineup will ease a bit with amped-up...

Media literacy is clearly not Joe Rogan’s strong suit. The podcast host recently took to Instagram to share a fake CNN report stating that actor Steven Seagal has joined Russian special forces stationed near Kyiv, Ukraine, noting the absurdity of “this fucked up movie we’re living through.” He later took it down, for obvious reasons.
“I deleted my earlier post about Steven Seagal being in Ukraine because it was parody, which isn’t surprising, but honestly it wouldn’t be surprising if it was true either,” he wrote in a follow-up post.

The main question you’ll be asking yourself while watching Keoni Waxman’s Cartels will be, “Why is Steven Seagal still a thing?” Sure, the veteran action star had a galvanizing screen presence back in the day. And he made some surprisingly good movies, especially his debut, 1988’s Above the Law, and 1992’s Under Siege. But nostalgia only goes so far, and the aging actor, whose hair and goatee are amazingly still jet-black at the age of 65, has long been phoning it in. This vehicle is one of seven — count ‘em, seven — movies that Seagal made last year, and...

Netflix certainly has their fingers in a lot of interesting pots. The past few years has seen them absolutely dominate the television series front. With original series like House of Cards, and Marvel productions like Luke Cage, they’ve proven that they can bring as riveting of dramas to the small screen as both standard networks and pay cable channels. With that territory now claimed, and their flag in the ground, they’ve also been hard at work at feature films.
Thus far, the success on that one has been less than their TV stuff, with films like War Machine having more of a mixed reception than they’d hope for. What’s more, they’re still working at getting their work noticed by the Oscars. But don’t think that Netflix is only interested in the awards, they’re also interested in more niche genre films like the upcoming Death Note.

The last thing I heard about Steven Seagal was that he was an actual Sheriff in New Mexico. It seems like it's been forever since I've heard of him doing a movie, but today we've got a trailer for a terrible-looking new action thriller that he's starring in called Cartels. I've gotta be honest... Seagal did not age well, at the same time, he looks like he's a guy I wouldn't want to mess with. After watching the trailer, for some reason, I thought that Seagal needs to play an action hero Santa Clause in his next movie. That's something I'd watch!

"Who the hell are you?" "I'm the guy you shoulda called when you went sideways." Lionsgate has dropped a trailer for yet another new Steven Seagal action movie, and it looks as terrible as his last one. The trailer is for a film called Cartels, formerly known as Killing Salazar. It's made by the same director who has made all of Seagal's recent movies, including Contract to Kill, which we featured a trailer for last year (did anyone actually watch it?). Cartels has some super cheesy, twisty plot involving a drug lord being captured, the DEA, and Seagal being Seagal. Also starring Georges St. Pierre, Martine Argent, Darren E. Scott, Massimo Dobrovic, and Luke Goss. I honestly don't even know why I bother with trailers for films like this, I'm never going to watch it, and I hope no one else will want to either. Move along, nothing to see here. Here's the newest official trailer (+ poster) for Keoni Waxman's ...

It has been a long time since I’ve reviewed a direct-to-market Steven Seagal movie, in fact its been some time since I’ve so much as watched one for my own “pleasure”. I skipped over Sniper: Special Ops, Asian Connection, Code of Honour, and the most recent Dtv release End of a Gun, maily because after buying, watching, and often reviewing, every single film starring Seagal until the aforementioned I was suffering from Seagal burnout… A condition that often comes about in an audience when they realise that the once-agile former martial arts superstar has succumbed to appearing in extended cameos in the hopes that long-suffering fans – like myself – will buy the film on his name...
