In the age of streaming, there’s a widespread belief that every movie is available, all the time, everywhere. Don’t fall for it! Some of the greatest movies ever made are nowhere to be found due to everything from music rights snafus to corporate negligence. In this column, we take a look at films currently out-of-print on physical media and unavailable on any streaming platform in an effort to draw attention to them and say to their rights holders, “Release This!”

Sometimes films highlight little-known events in their country of origin that wind up catalyzing a re-evaluation of their nation’s history. Finnish director Klaus Härö’s “Never Alone” is shaping up to be that sort of film. It follows the deportation from Finland of eight Austrian-Jewish refugees by the Gestapo during World War II and the work of Abraham Stiller, a pillar of the Helsinki Jewish community, who tried to stop it from happening.
Despite Finland’s uneasy alliance with Nazi Germany during the early years of the war, Jewish citizens of Finland had their government’s protection in spite of some Finnish officials who would have preferred to comply with the Gestapo’s requests to expel them all.
It’s the first cinematic treatment of this subject, which producer Ilkka Matila says was too painful a story for the Finnish state and the entire society to speak about publicly.

Since its confirmation in 2018, fans have been anticipating the release of Alan Wake’s TV show. However, it has been six years since it was announced, and many felt like the TV series might never come to fruition. Fortunately, it has been revealed that a new TV adaptation is in the works for the series, and the hunt for the cast is already underway.
All eyes will be on the lead character, aka Alan Wake himself, and who will take on this role in the TV adaptation. Unsurprisingly, fans want to see Ilkka Villi reprise his role from the video game as he is more than capable of doing so.

Ville Virtanen as Kari Sorjonen, in the Finnish crime series “Bordertown.” Courtesy of MHz Choice
The first two seasons of the moody Finnish police procedural, “Bordertown” were excellent, featuring one of those troubled, eccentric, brilliant police detectives that have been so popular for many years, in many countries.
Here is the link to my laudatory review of Season 2 to bring you up to speed on characters and relevant backstories for this one: www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2024/04/bordertown-season-2-review/.
Unfortunately, Season 3 doesn’t quite live up to the first two. Again it’s 10 episodes, with each featured crime covered in two or three of them, and several subplots carried over from before and recurring throughout this one. Kari’s wife dies in the first, and the way he and daughter Janina deal with their grief is the stuff of which melodramas are made for the whole season. Many clashes and moody musings...

Babylon Berlin has landed a new U.S. home on a newly-merged streaming service created as Kino Lorber’s MHz Choice and Topic combine.
The boutique streamer will be named MHz Choice and feature the likes of The Killing, The Bridge, Detective Montalbano, The Sea Beyond and Pagan Peak, alongside the popular Babylon Berlin, which moves over from Netflix after three seasons on that streamer.
Kino Lorber said the new streamer will “combine the best European dramas and mysteries with Nordic noir crime and thrillers under the MHz Choice brand.”
The Four Daughters distributor owns MHz Choice and Topic, the latter of which in a Jv with First Look Media under which Kino has a majority stake and management oversight. The news comes a few weeks after we revealed layoffs at First Look production subsidiary Topic Studios.

Jennifer Lopez's upcoming sci-fi movie, Atlas, follows her surprise action star turn in The Mother, solidifying a new chapter in her acting career. While Lopez is known for her rom-coms and dramas, The Mother showcased her as an action-film lead. Atlas differentiates itself from The Mother with its sci-fi premise, but it's also primed to break streaming records — just like Lopez's other Netflix collaboration.
An upcoming 2024 sci-fi movie featuring Jennifer Lopez seems like the perfect follow-up to the beloved star's surprise Netflix hit from 2023. Finland’s industry is ready to appeal to the government as the future of a film and TV production incentive is under threat, with a 25% cash rebate levied on spend on foreign and Finnish shoots in the country conspicuously absent from a provisional budget for 2024, announced Monday.
“People have been hopeful, so they didn’t want to believe in what the government has been saying. For the whole autumn, we kept hearing they will cut the incentives altogether and that our budget at the Foundation will be cut by a few per cent. The final decision was made on Monday,” said Finnish Film Foundation CEO Lasse Saarinen.
“All these years when we had the incentives, we had opposition in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. These officials just didn’t like the idea,” he noted.
But the fight isn’t over just yet.

Beta Film has dropped the trailer for “Estonia,” a Scandinavian limited series about Europe’s deadliest civil maritime disaster.
The eight-part cinematic show, which is represented in international markets by Jan Mojto’s Beta Film (“Babylon Berlin”), charts the sinking of the Ms Estonia on Sept. 28, 1994, which killed over 850 people.
The series is directed by Swedish director Måns Månsson and Finnish director Juuso Syrjä. While the sinking of the ship is an important part of the show, “Estonia” also spotlights the tentacular probe launched in the aftermath of the tragedy by the Joint Accident Investigation Committee established by Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
Showrunner Miikko Oikkonen, who co-wrote the series with Olli Suitiala and Tuomas Hakola, said that when he “started to read the final report and went through the material, (he) realized the investigation itself was even more interesting than the accident.”

Peter Gonzales Falcon, the actor from Texas who portrayed a young Federico Fellini in Roma, the famed Italian director’s 1972 autobiographical film, has died. He was 74.
Gonzales Falcon was found dead at his home Tuesday in La Pryor, Texas, by authorities called there for a safety check, his friend Aurelio Montemayor told The Hollywood Reporter.
After dropping out of college after being cast in Viva Max (1969), a farcical present-day comedy about retaking the Alamo, Gonzales Falcon was hired by Fellini himself for Roma, which featured cameos from Anna Magnani, Marcello Mastroianni and Gore Vidal.
Segments of the film show Gonzales Falcon as Fellini during the 1930s and ’40s after the future filmmaker arrives in Rome to pursue a career as a journalist and wanders the city to experience what it has to offer. He worked on the documentary-style feature for 41 weeks, he told author Tom Lisanti during an expansive 2018 interview.

He worked on the documentary-style feature for 41 weeks, he told author Tom Lisanti during an expansive 2018 interview.

Alan Wake shows itself to be scarier than ever in the sequel Alan Wake 2.
During what was dubbed Opening Night Live at big gaming conference Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, hosted by journalist Geoff Keighley, the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment unveiled a trailer featuring some gameplay snippets from the sequel to a horror video game released in 2010 and taking viewers to the dark place between CG and live action.
“In a horror story, there are only monsters and victims,” says a voiceover. “And the trick is to become neither.” This new, and grim, adventure follows beloved writer Alan Wake, who has disappeared and become trapped in a nightmare in the frightening town of Bright Falls, Washington, where he’s already had paranormal experiences in the first installment of the franchise.
Investigating his disappearance is FBI agent Saga Anderson, who finds herself embroiled in a series of unexplained events — a horror story written by Wake himself.

A-list multi-hyphenate celebrity Jennifer Lopez is most known for her successful career as a pop singer, but she's also an accomplished actress, and has starred in a wide variety of movies. Lopez got her start in 1991, appearing as a Fly Girl dancer on sketch comedy show In Living Color. Her breakout role was in 1997's Selena, for which Lopez was paid $1 million, the most for any Latina actress at the time (via Variety). She released her debut studio album "On the 6ix" in 1999 and went on to become one of the world's most famous pop stars, and performed at the Super Bowl Liv halftime show in 2020.
In addition to her music career, Lopez has acted steadily since the '90s. Though critics haven't always been kind to her work, Lopez's best movies often strike a chord with audiences. She is mostly known for her crowd-pleasing romantic comedies, but Lopez has...

Jennifer Lopez has range — from music to movies — and in acting she can do action and romantic comedy, sometimes combined into the same film. In honor of “The Mother” releasing this weekend, we’ve rounded up seven of JLo’s other great action and drama film performances.
She starred alongside George Clooney in “Out of Sight” (1998) as a federal marshall, and in “Bordertown” (2007) she plays an investigative journalist. “Hustlers” (2019) shows her as an entrepreneurial exotic dancer scheming to game the system of the patriarchy.

Good thing you have this guide to make sure you catch everything that may have been sitting in your Netflix queue before they mysteriously disappear.

Everybody has to start somewhere. Cate Blanchett — long before her two Oscars and starring roles in film, TV and on stage — had an oddball beginning in showbiz.
On March 28, 1994, Variety mentioned “Police Rescue,” a big-screen version of the hit Aussie TV series, in which she appeared. It’s sometimes listed as her film debut. It’s not.
After studying theater in her native Australia, she traveled; running out of money in Cairo, she worked briefly on the 1990 Egyptian film “Kaboria,” dancing in a party scene (which is visible on YouTube).
Variety wrote about other projects in which she appeared, like the TV series “Heartland” and “Bordertown.” But she was not mentioned by name until the 1996 review of the 51-minute film “Parklands.” Variety critic David Stratton disliked it and said Blanchett had “little to work with,” but he noted that she “is on the road to becoming Australia’s next prominent actress,...

“Evilside” is produced by Whatevergroup Oy in collaboration with Handmade Films in Norwegian Woods, Business Finland, Business Oulu and the Finnish Film Foundation.
“What drew us to ‘Evilside’ is that the script had all the characteristics of a good Scandi noir thriller, but with a very diverse mix of characters and so many new elements added,” Dutch Features CEO Pim van Collem told Variety.
She added: “Two women are at the center here: the detective trying to solve the case and the young woman who is accused of the crime. Including a teenage character as one of the leads will feed into a whole new younger audience and we are excited to be hitting the international market with this gem.

Almost anyone over 30 has owned a Nokia phone at some point in their lives, but not many people know that the iconic brand was created at a Finnish company formerly specializing in rubber boots.
Once the world’s biggest mobile manufacturer at the turn of the 21st century, the company was nearly wiped out of the smartphone market by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android well before 2010, and ultimately sold its handset division to Microsoft in 2013.
When news broke of Microsoft’s takeover on TV, Finnish director Maarit Lalli’s first thought was, “There’s going to be only one [drama] on Nokia in Finland: It will either be me or someone else, and it’s most likely going to be made by a man,” she told Variety during a set visit in Helsinki.
The next morning, Lalli called Finnish TV channels and the Finish Film Foundation to check if...

Exclusive: Mia Kaplan (Smilf), Rainn Wilson (Jerry and Marge Go Large), Missi Pyle (Y: The Last Man), newcomer Jemima Yevu and Jolene Purdy (The White Lotus) have signed on to star in Empire Waist, a body-positive, coming-of-age dramedy from writer-director Claire Ayoub and Wayfarer Studios, which is currently in production in New York.
Ayoub’s first feature centers on a group of teens who overcome societal bias and celebrate self-acceptance through inclusive fashion design and friendship. Kaplan plays the lead role of Lenore, a teen deeply insecure about her weight. Hiding her passion for fashion design, Lenore tries to make herself invisible in her day-to-day life to avoid being bullied — both by her classmates and image-conscious mother (Pyle). Meanwhile her best friend Kayla (Yevu) is confident, funny, outgoing, and proud of her plus-sized body.
Wilson will play Lenore’s father, Mark, who is his daughter’s biggest cheerleader, with Purdy as Ms.
