Back in the 20th century, it was very common to see a stand-up comic enter the Hollywood pipeline by starring in their own sitcom based on their acts. Comedians like Bob Newhart, Martin Lawrence, and Roseanne Barr went from performing on small stages around the country to appearing in basically every living room in America thanks to the miracle of television. But when it came to the Latino community, there was a clear lack of representation. That is, until George Lopez arrived on the scene in 2002 with "The George Lopez Show."

Danish international sales and aggregation outfit LevelK has boarded the thought-provoking drama “Great Yarmouth: Provisional Figures” by award-winning Portuguese director Marco Martins, which world premieres in main competition at next month’s San Sebastian Film Festival.

Hailed by Variety as “a powerful study of intense grief,” Martin’s debut feature, “Alice,” won the Prix Regards Jeune at Cannes in 2005.

The story unravels three months before Brexit, as hundreds of migrants descend on the UK village of Great Yarmouth seeking work in the region’s turkey processing plants. Once there, Tânia greets them with matronly authority, taking charge as innkeeper, accountant, and fixer. As she’s forced to deceive them, her conscience grows heavy and she dreams of a brighter, seemingly unattainable, future transforming derelict hotels into modern retreats for elderly tourists.

George Lopez and his real-life daughter Mayan Lopez are slated to star in a “working-class family” comedy from Universal Television about “dysfunction, reconnection and all the pain and joy in between.”

“Lopez vs. Lopez,” which has a put pilot commitment from NBC, is produced by Mohawk Productions, Travieso Productions, Mi Vida Loba, and 3 Arts.

Debby Wolfe, known for co-executive producing “One Day at a Time” and “The Conners,” is writing and executive producing the project alongside “The Conners” showrunner and “Kevin Can Wait” creator Bruce Helford, who is supervising. George Lopez is also executive producing, with Mayan Lopez on board as a producer. Michael Rotenberg and Katie Newman are non-writing exec producers.

George Lopez is returning to his sitcom roots, reuniting with Cedric the Entertainer in the April 26 episode of CBS’ The Neighborhood — and TVLine has your exclusive first look.

Lopez will guest-star as Victor Alvarez, owner of auto-repair chain Motor Boys. When Victor tries to steal Calvin’s customers, the Butlers and Johnsons join forces to drum up business for Calvin’s Pit Stop and give back to their community.

In a competitive situation, the George Lopez drama series “Once Upon a Time in Aztlan” has been set up at Amazon for development, Variety has learned exclusively.

Lopez will star in and executive produce the one-hour series under his Travieso Productions banner. Javier Rodriguez created the series and will executive produce along with famed photographer and director Estevan Oriol, iconic LA-based artist Mister Cartoon, and Michael Connolly, who put the package together under his Mad Hatter Entertainment banner. Ricardo de Montreuil will direct the pilot and executive produce along with Oriol and Cartoon’s longtime collaborators Mark Suroff and Marco Valadez. Oriol previously collaborated with Cartoon, Suroff, and Valdez on the documentary “LA Originals,” with Oriol directing and the latter three executive producing.

The series will be a production between STXtv and Amazon Studios. STXtv acquired the spec script over the summer and subsequently took it to market, focusing on streaming and cable outlets.

The pandemic, although disastrous for most parts of the economy, had one minor upside: a boost in online viewing. The number of subscribers of Portugal’s VOD platform Filmin, for example, has tripled compared with last year, due in part to the lockdown. “We grew as much in three months as we forecast for two years,” Filmin Portugal manager Anette Dujisin told Variety. Classic films have played a major part in driving that growth.

Despite challenges with local classics, Filmin is seeing growing success with heritage films and catalog titles as well as new releases. Filmin has received constant requests from subscribers – even loud demands from some – for more classic films since the service went online in 2016, Dujisin said.

A sitcom inspired by the life of Danny Trejo is currently in development at ABC.

Titled “Food & Familia,” the multi-camera comedy has Trejo attached to star as a father who’s about to get out of prison when he and his daughter — who hates her father for abandoning her — inherit the family restaurant after the family matriarch passes way.

Peter Murrietta, whose credits include “Cristela,” “Lopez” and “One Day at a Time,” will write the script.

Danny Trejo is attached to star in an ABC comedy project that boasts Will Smith among its executive producers.

Trejo will star in and executive produce “Food & Familia,” which is currently in development at the broadcaster. The multi-camera comedy, is inspired by Trejo’s life. When the matriarch of the family passes away, she leaves her restaurant to her son, Danny (Trejo)– who’s about to get out of prison — and her granddaughter, Michelle, who hates her father for abandoning her. This gift from beyond the grave might heal the father and daughter and get them back together but, it’s gonna be rocky as the two of them work their differences out while trying to operate a restaurant, live together, and become a real family again.

Peter Murrietta will write and executive produce the project. Trejo and Smith will executive produce along with Caleeb Pinkett and James Lassiter of Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment.

Lav Diaz’s The Woman Who Left from the Philippines won the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice Film festival on Saturday while Emma Stone claimed the Coppa Volpi best actress prize for La La Land and Oscar Martínez took actor honours for El Ciudadano Ilustre.

The Silver Lion – grand jury prize went to Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and the Silver Lion award for best director was a tie between Andrei Konchalovsky for Paradise and Amat Escalante for The Untamed.

Noah Oppenheim prevailed in the screenplay category for Jackie, while Ana Lily Amirpour earned a special jury prize for The Bad Batch.
