It's been 13 years since horror master John Carpenter has blessed the world with a new directorial project, but the icon behind movies like "Halloween," "Escape From New York," and "The Thing" is finally returning to our screens this autumn — with a documentary-like TV horror series. "John Carpenter's Suburban Screams" will feature six nerve-shredding true stories retold by those who experienced them, and will couple the testimony with dramatic (and decidedly scary-looking) visual retellings of the story. The show is also set to include archival footage and news clips.
Carpenter is only set to direct one of the six episodes of "Suburban Screams," but he's involved in the project in other ways, lending his considerable talents as a composer to its soundtrack and executive producing the Peacock project. The show sounds like it will meet at the intersection of reality and horror movie sensibilities, which could be the perfect recipe for some great scares.

Canada-based actor Colm Feore, whose credits include Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” “My Salinger Year,” “The Amazing Spiderman 2” and multiple Oscar winner “Chicago,” is to star in post-apocalyptic Western “Six Guns for Hire,” which has just started principal photography in Toronto, Canada. The film also stars Maurice Dean Wint, Oyin Oladejo, and Patrick Kwok-Choon.
“Six Guns for Hire,” the third in a trilogy, is written and directed by Matt Campagna. It follows a vicious group of strangers who gather to divvy up the spoils of a train robbery, while an ace detective pursues hot on their trail. As the bandits realize they may not be strangers after all, the detective unearths a deadly conspiracy at the heart of their crime.
The three stories in the trilogy series, all developed and directed by Campagna, exist within the same post-apocalyptic world, without being traditional sequels or prequels to each other.

It’s safe to say John Bailey does not miss the trappings of the president’s office at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Speaking at a retrospective celebrating his five decades of cinematography work at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage festival, where Bailey will be honored with a lifetime achievement award this week, he told an audience in Torun that his Academy presidency was not always rewarding. “I was not particularly enamored of the internal politics.”
Bailey’s two terms atop the institution, which ended this year, coincided with turmoil the 92-year-old Academy faced over the #oscarssowhite and the #metoo movements – including a sexual harassment allegation against Bailey himself for which he was exonerated – and scandals focused on the over-budget Academy museum project.

A family in crisis deals with tragedy in a truly novel way. Burn Your Maps is a quirky drama filled with adventure and a whole lot of heart. The plot is a bit too fantastical, but the strength of the performances grounds the narrative when needed. Vera Farmiga is sublime as a mother who takes extraordinary measures for her son's happiness. Their journey to spiritual awakening heals frayed bonds and forces a reckoning with grief. Burn Your Maps leaves you optimistic and filled with wanderlust. It's an uplifting diversion from the hectic summer box office.
Burn Your Maps opens with Alise (Vera Farmiga) and Conner (Marton Csokas) Firth in a counseling session. The tragic death of their infant daughter has the family reeling. Alise has been unable to cope with the loss of her child, becoming cold and distant. Conner is worried the gulf between them has become too wide.

“Burn Your Maps” is one of those movies that’s glib and facile and threadbare all the way through, then the ending sort of gets to you (you’d have to be made of pretty stern stuff if it didn’t), so you think back over what you’ve seen — and it’s still a crock. The writer-director, Jordan Roberts, seems drawn like a magnet to overly manipulative feel-good genres. This is another of those dramas about a couple who have lost a young child, and it’s ripping them apart, but watching them go through the motions of a healing that won’t take, the audience feels just about as removed from their pain as they are.
I’m not suggesting that this is an invalid subject for a movie, only that it’s not one you want to see treated with on-the-nose therapeutic shallowness. When we first meet...

Vertical Entertainment has released a new trailer for Burn Your Maps. This little indie flick is headlined by Jacob Tremblay, who busted onto the scene thanks to his performance in the Oscar-winner Room, as well as Vera Farmiga, who has been turning in great performances for more than a decade. In this case, the two have paired up for a grounded yet warm tale, based on what we're seeing in this new trailer for the upcoming summer release.
The trailer kicks off by setting up something of a troubled relationship between a couple of parents who have something of an interesting kid, to put it mildly. This young boy believes he's a Mongolian and takes his fantasy to extreme levels. This puts a wedge between the various members of the family and the mom eventually says to hell with it and actually takes her boy to Mongolia. From there, it...

"What brings you to Mongolia?" Vertical Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for an indie adventure comedy titled Burn Your Maps, from writer/director Jordan Roberts. This first premiered at film festivals back in late 2016, and has taken three years to finally get an actual Us release. No idea why, but this trailer might give you a hint that it's just not all that. Burn Your Maps is about a family in emotional turmoil that is taken by surprise when an eccentric 8-year-old American boy, Wes, has an existential epiphany - he believes that he is in fact a Mongolian goat herder. So they travel to Mongolia and things get even crazier, of course. Jacob Tremblay stars with Vera Farmiga, and a cast including Virginia Madsen, Marton Csokas, Jason Scott Lee, Suraj Sharma, Arielle Rombough, Ramon Rodriguez, and Glynis Davies. This looks cute but also awkward and just strange, not...

Disney's Mulan Remake Gets Jason Scott Lee as the Villain
Disney's live-action Mulan has just added another villain, Jason Scott Lee, who is of Chinese and Hawaiian descent. He joins actor Gong Li, who was previously cast as one of the antagonists in the upcoming reimagining of the Disney animated classic. This offers further proof that the Mouse House is putting their money where their mouth is on this one, in terms of not whitewashing it.
Jason Scott Lee is set to portray a warrior by the name of Bori Khan. He's described as a leader dead set on avenging his father's death. Beyond that, his specific motivations and who exactly he wants to get revenge on remain a mystery.
This is an interesting bit of casting in the sense that Jason Scott Lee actually has a pre-established history with Disney. He portrayed Mowgli in his younger years in the studios' 1994 live-action version of The Jungle Book. He was...

Suraj Sharma began his journey in the world of making movies with the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated film Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee. The young actor’s first role was very challenging not only in the character he had to potray, but the fact that much of his role was filmed in front of a green screen with a CGI tiger. He excelled and won rave reviews. Originally from India, Sharma has been looking for an Indian film to do and finally found it in Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri.

The news that 20th Century Fox were bringing back the Predator following a critically disappointing Robert Rodriguez rebootquel in 2010 was something of a surprise. Then Shane Black’s name became attached and interest in the project was suddenly elevated. Black’s The Nice Guys was an unsung hero of last year’s cinematic offerings, and the man has a keen eye and ear for making good movies. The news today that he has secured the services of Room’s Jacob Tremblay for a lead role makes a lot of sense given Black’s previous films, in which a young actor often made a real difference to the tone, and success, of the movies.

Last year, Lenny Abrahamson’s “Room,” written by and based upon Emma Donoghue’s novel by the same name, follows a young woman (Brie Larson) and her five-year-old son Jack (Jacob Tremblay) as captives of a dangerous kidnapper. The film garnered quite a bit of acclaim, including four Oscar nominations, and the young Tremblay won a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Performer. Now, a year later, Tremblay guest stars on this week’s Billy Eichner’s TruTV comedy game show “Billy on the Street” where he walks around New York with Eichner reminding citizens that “he’s more successful than they are and is blowing up in Hollywood right now.” Watch the segment below.

– “3-D Auteurs,” a 19-day, 34-film festival spotlighting stereoscopic movies by some of history’s most distinguished directors, will run at Film Forum November 11 – 29. The festival spans 3-D’s earliest days (including some turn-of-the-century films by pioneer Georges Méliès) to the present, and represents virtually every genre, including Westerns, Film Noir, and Science Fiction. Hollywood’s first big 3-D craze (sometimes called 3-D’s “golden era”), intended to offset the threat of television, came in the early 1950s, with such movies as Hitchcock’s “Dial M For Murder,” André De Toth’s “House of Wax” and Jack Arnold’s “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (all included in the series).
Hollywood produced roughly 50 movies in the process from 1952 to 1954, before fizzling out and being overtaken by...

Many films deal with the aftermath of a family death by becoming about how their characters live with the pain — it changing them into different people. Some distinctly show them living despite it instead. Rather than depict Connor (Marton Csokas) and Alise (Vera Farmiga) as the death of their baby girl just ten months prior consumes them, Jordan Roberts’ Burn Your Maps portrays their desire to move on after their transformations are complete. They’re searching for a future they hope exists but cannot yet see. They’ve dealt with grief already (at least they’re frustrated enough to believe they have), so now it’s time to embrace the life that remains. While their son Wes (Jacob Tremblay) readies for what this entails, we’re still uncertain if they are too.
But don’t think this story is one steeped in heavy drama from start to finish without room to breathe.

Jacob Tremblay and Vera Farmiga (as his understanding mother) are irresistible in this strange tale, premiering at Toronto, of a young boy with goats on the brain – it’s just a shame the film isn’t as interested in the locals as they are
Few actors working in Hollywood today have a more expressive face than Vera Farmiga. With a crooked smile or a slightly tilted head, she has the uncanny ability to convey complex emotions in even the briefest reaction shot. Lucky we are, then, that this newest film, Burn Your Maps, offers a rich character, roiled in tumult, and plopped in an extraordinary setting. This isn’t to say this movie is a masterpiece, but it’s one that doesn’t just tug on the heartstrings it yanks on them like a streetcar passenger afraid he’ll miss his stop.

The Toronto International Film Festival is mere weeks from kicking off, yet the annual fall fest is showing zero sign of slowing down when it comes to announcing the titles that will round out this year’s event. Today’s announcement brings with it a number of Cannes favorites, including Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake,” Olivier Assayas’ divisive Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta.”

Auteurs working within the confines of the studio system tend to disappoint, though we try to keep hope alive by anticipating the best for talented directors braving compromised visions. 2015 wasn’t without its fair share of standout studio fare, particularly with George Miller’s comeback for Mad Max: Fury Road, Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Inarritu’s The Revenant, and J.J. Abram’s revitalization of Star Wars. Of course, there were just as many disappointments, including David Gordon Green’s Our Brand is Crisis and the Wachowski Siblings’ rather derivative Jupiter Ascending. While a couple items from our top 25 studio list last year were held over, we’ve noted a bright clutch of hopeful auteur items to look forward to in 2016. You’ll notice a common theme among our top items, including supernatural or extraterrestrial elements.

Teaming up with an ambitious Indian filmmaker (Suraj Sharma), the pair set out on a journey east to Mongolia to find their place in the world. We’ve got an…...
