Veterans Day is a federal holiday that honors the men and women who served.
Countless films have been made about their bravery, heroism and sacrifice.
Here are seven films to stream on Veterans Day this year:
“Saving Private Ryan”
Steven Spielberg’s ode to World War II veterans won five Oscars including Best Director for Spielberg — his second — while famously missing out on Best Picture to “Shakespeare in Love.” It is a visceral, emotional story of a group of soldiers, led by Tom Hanks, who are tasked with finding a private after the invasion of Normandy and bringing him home. Through their journey, Spielberg showcases the perspectives of everyone touched by the war, and the many different kinds of soldiers who fought for their country.
“Saving Private Ryan” is streaming on Paramount+ and Fubo.

It’s a close contest at the domestic box office, with the opening day gross of Universal’s ballerina vampire film “Abigail” leading Lionsgate’s fellow new release “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and the second frame of A24’s dystopian thriller “Civil War.”
“Abigail” earned $4 million from 3,384 theaters across its opening day and preview screenings, making it the top performer of the weekend so far. But, after factoring out the $1 million that the horror film earned from screenings before Friday, it comes up behind A24’s “Civil War,” which was actually the top grosser for April 19, taking in roughly $3.3 million.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” fired off about $3.7 million from 2,845 locations — a figure that includes $1.45 million across earlier preview screenings. All three films are eyeing weekend grosses in the low-teens or high-single-digits.

Most true film aficionados can spot a Guy Ritchie film within just a few minutes of watching. The British director has a patented and unique style that he has parlayed into several fantastic UK mobster movies like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and the action-adventure franchise that is Sherlock Holmes. But in Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, there are no hard Cockney accents, gratuitous violence, and the slow-motion style of delivering the action that is synonymous with the 55-year-old filmmaker. Instead, he opts to tell a character-driven story about the war in Afghanistan and just how far one will go in order to save another and the debt that is left with the benefactor of such an act of bravery and selflessness.

We don’t step evenly into Sons. Over the stretch of a long, grim elevator ride––face-to-face with Eva (Sidse Babett Knudsen), a middle-aged woman working as a guard in the Danish prison system––we descend into it. The initial reveal is light-hearted, the opposite direction one might expect from a prison thriller. But only briefly. Like its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark has been renowned for its relatively humane approach to mass incarceration: low rates of recidivism, fewer instances of violence, and anti-punitive philosophies. But “relatively” and “has been” are the key words here.
The Danish Prisons and Probation Service is still a modern, westernized prison-industrial complex. And one in sharp decline. Where it once swam upstream alongside its Nordic siblings in the name of ethics, it’s now accused of taking cues from more penal, profit-bent countries such as the US. Noble Team's absence in Halo season 2's "Reach" may disappoint fans hoping for their inclusion in the series down the line. The Fall of Reach plotline differs greatly from what happens in Halo: Reach, but still features some odes to the game. Despite Noble Team's significance, their role in the series may be unnecessary due to the presence of Master Chief and Silver Team.
Spoilers are ahead for Halo season 2, episode 4, "Reach."In the wake of Halo season 2, episode 4, "Reach," the inclusion of Noble Team in the Paramount+ series seems like a pipe dream. Ahead of the highly anticipated fourth entry in the show's sophomore season, which chronicles Halo's Fall of Reach plotline, the series gave no indication that Noble Team would join the fray. However, given that the Spartan squad plays a central role in the Halo: Reach video game, long-time fans of the franchise remained hopeful about Noble Team's eventual inclusion.

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s John Wick spinoff Ballerina starring Ana de Armas will be delayed a year from June 7, 2024 to June 6, 2025. The move comes as John Wick architect Chad Stahelski has inked a new deal with Lionsgate to oversee the franchise. He’s working with Ballerina director Len Wiseman on additional action sequences for the movie, to amp it up even more than it is.
Advance tracking is already hot on Ballerina, Lionsgate just wants to make the feature, produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee’s Thunder Road even better. Currently, the Ballerina stands alone on her new summer 2025 date.
Now, there’s nothing for exhibition to fret, for the Rupert Sanders’ redux of The Crow will be taking over Ballerina‘s summer date of June 7 this year. Bill Skarsgård takes on the iconic role of The Crow in this modern reimagining of the original graphic novel by James O’Barr.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. The Road House remake looks badass. I was among those who were wary of director Doug Liman remaking the Patrick Swayze action classic, especially when I heard Jake Gyllenhaal would be leading the cast. Gyllenhaal is a great actor, but would he be good as Dalton the bouncer? And what about the hair??? Could he ever compare to the late Crazy Swayze? But, over the last few months, the buzz has been building that this Road House remake is terrific. It’s apparently one of the highest-testing movies in Amazon-MGM history, and the trailer rocked the internet when it came out about a month ago. Against all odds, it looks like Liman and Gyllenhaal have made a slam-bang action flick that updates and pays homage to the original film without being derivative. So why isn’t it going to theaters?...

Admiral Keyes learns that Master Chief was right about the Covenant being on Reach, despite dismissing it as a delusion. Ackerson lied about Cobalt Team's disappearance because he didn't want the information about the Covenant's invasion to get out.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman recently collaborated for the reboot of the 1989 cult favorite, Road House. But while the movie was initially set to premiere at SXSW on March 8, it got plagued with controversies that delayed its release until March 21. The upcoming release became the subject of controversy, following Liman’s Deadline op-ed piece.
Jake Gyllenhaal in Spider-Man: Far From Home
According to Doug Liman, he wanted Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House to have a theatrical release, especially since it tested extremely well with audiences. But after Amazon bought the storied movie studio MGM, according to Variety reports, Liman was offered and agreed to an $85M budget for a streaming release of the film. Fans are now confused about whom to believe.

After closing out January with the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant (listen) and the pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate (listen), we kicked off February with journey to the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator. Now, we’re traveling back in time to discuss Albert Lewin‘s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), tells his friend Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian inadvertently makes a Faustian bargain to stay young forever. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. Unfortunately, his sins take physical form on a portrait of himself, and as the years go by he must decide what type of man he wants to be.

Jake Gyllenhaal's best war movie is "The Covenant" due to its intense combat scenes and visceral experience on the frontlines. "The Covenant" focuses on the connection formed between two opposing countrymen, while "Jarhead" explores the psychological effects and isolation of military routine. "The Covenant" tells an inspiring tale of unsung heroism, highlighting the bond and sacrifices made between two strangers with opposing ideologies.
Jake Gyllenhaal has starred in three extremely different kinds of war movies in his career to date. The first war movie Gyllenhaal starred in was Jarhead in 2005, directed by Sam Mendes from a memoir of the same name by former U.S. Marine Anthony Swofford. The story takes place in the first Gulf War and explores the psychological ramifications of U.S. Marines combating boredom, downtime, isolation, and alienation as they bond together and await battle.

January featured plenty of highs and lows on Horror Queers. We started with the brilliant sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (listen) and the silly subversiveness of German film Killer Condom (listen). Then we descended into trash for two weeks with The Covenant (listen) and The Roommate (listen).

"This is an unsanctioned, unauthorized mission." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for Guy Ritchie's new WWII action film titled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, arriving in theaters this April. Ritchie already deliver another war film last year with The Covenant, and also has The Gentlemen series coming up, now he's heading back to WWII to tell the origin story of covert Black Ops missions. The British military recruits a small group of highly-skilled soldiers to strike against Nazi forces behind enemy lines. Billed as a true story about a secret British World War II organization: the Special Operations Executive. Founded by Winston Churchill, their irregular warfare against the Nazis helped to change the course of the war and gave birth to modern black operations. The massive ensemble cast features Henry Cavill as Gus March-Phillips, with Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusanmokun,...

You have to be careful with verbosely-named action teams, cinematically-speaking. You’re looking for that mismatched bunch of violent oddbods, but are you after The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Or the spooky kids of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children? Or could it even be, um, The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society? If you’re Guy Ritchie, the answer you’re looking for is The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare – that’s the name of his next film, the latest from the ludicrously busy British filmmaker, who also has The Gentlemen spin-off series (unrelated to Gentlemanly Warfare) readying to launch on Netflix soon. This one’s a wartime romp based on a historical World War 2 mission – with Henry Cavill letting loose as an agent whose unconventional methods might just reap results. Watch the trailer:

Has anyone told Guy Ritchie that it's totally okay to take a nap, get some water, or slow down before he burns himself out? The prolific English film director, producer, and screenwriter has been firing on all cylinders for the last 25 years, churning out thrillers, action comedies, spy dramas, and even a live-action Disney movie to boast one of the most impressive filmographies of any director working today. Last year saw the release of both "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" and "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant," with the latter hitting theaters in April. Now, Ritchie's next film is slated for release almost a year later to the day with "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." I say this with the utmost love and respect — that's a title that sounds like the result of a "Guy Ritchie Movie" movie title generator. This is to say, I'll absolutely be there on opening night to catch this nonsense.

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant was filmed in Spain, not Afghanistan, but managed to beautifully capture the visual identity of the Middle East. Alicante, a popular tourist destination, was an interesting choice to represent Afghanistan due to its temperate hilly desert countryside. The Covenant also utilized locations such as Sax and Villajoyosa, which provided the rocky terrain and a central firefight location, respectively, adding to the authenticity of the film's setting.
Guy Ritchie's The Covenant was filmed in a variety of locations that helped bring the setting of Taliban-occupied Afghanistan to life — and considering how immersive the 2023 movie is, it's amazing that it wasn't even filmed on the same continent. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Sergeant John Kinley, a war-hardened soldier who hires a local interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), who saves an injured Kinley after a disastrous ambush. Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

Critically acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie is reportedly no longer set to direct Disney's upcoming live-action remake of its 1997 animated classic Hercules.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Ritchie is too busy to make Hercules and has shifted his focus to other projects. The DisInsider Show has backed up Richtman's report, stating that they have also heard that Ritchie "has become too busy." Ritchie has been working non-stop lately, pumping out one action film after another. His latest, The Covenant, hit theaters in 2023, while his next, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, opens on April 19, 2024. He is also in post-production on an untitled action film and in pre-production on Fountain of Youth. With big-budgeted blockbusters sometimes being years-long commitments, it seems that Ritchie just doesn't have room in his schedule for Hercules.

Netflix’s The Gentlemen series doesn’t feature the same ensemble cast as Guy Ritchie’s 2020 film of the same name. However, Ritchie says his new series is set in the same sort of world as the film, and that’s confirmed in the show’s first official teaser trailer.
The R-rated feature film starred Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, and Michelle Dockery. The ensemble of the 2024 series that it inspired is led by Theo James (The White Lotus 2) and includes Ray Winstone (The Departed) and Kaya Scodelario (The Pale Horse). Just four years after the movie hit theaters, Netflix has turned Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" into a TV show. The above teaser trailer for the series offers proof of that, introducing a drug empire, a cast of criminals, and some vintage Ritchie shenanigans.
The teaser admittedly doesn't dive too deeply into the story, but it does do a great job of capturing the vibe. It's all set to the tune of "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, with some welcome narration by Giancarlo Esposito, of "Breaking Bad" and "The Boys" fame. Esposito is just one part of a pretty well-stacked ensemble led by Theo James ("The White Lotus"). Blood, boxing, and quips, this has all of the hallmarks of a classic Guy Ritchie production. It certainly has a similar feeling to the 2020 movie, but it also feels designed to satisfy "Snatch" fans. The official synopsis for the show...
