“Pan Indian” is a fairly new phrase that entered the daily lexicon of the Indian movie enthusiast about 10 years ago. It all started in 2015 with the release of director S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning, the first of a two-part historical fantasy that originally was made in the Telugu language, which is spoken in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in South India. The film was an instant hit and by the end of its run had become the second-highest-grossing Indian movie of all time, taking in $80 million at the domestic box office.

Until Baahubali: The Beginning, there was no need for a film to be called “pan-Indian,” since it was assumed that only the Hindi film industry — or Bollywood, as it came to be known outside of India — could produce a film that would be watched across the length and breadth of this culturally and linguistically diverse country.

Indian producers associations are sounding the alarm over President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to implement a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films entering the U.S. market, a move that threatens the $100 million theatrical business that Indian cinema currently enjoys in America.

Shibashish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India, cautions that it’s still early to fully assess the situation. “It is a little early to comment as global film industries and stakeholders are still processing what is the objective of the statement by President Trump, and what exactly it will solve for Hollywood. Also as we see from his other announcements on tariffs, things change till it’s implemented,” Sarkar tells Variety.

Rama Rajamouli is an Indian costume designer and film stylist. She debuted with the 2001 film Student No: 1, directed by her husband, the most celebrated Telugu director SS Rajamouli. Rama is known for her work in the films Magadheera (2009), Eega (2012), Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), and Rrr (2022).

She has also worked as an additional dialogue writer and has a connection with the TV industry. She played a newsreader in Amrutham and appeared as a news presenter in one of the initial episodes of the show.

Prabhas has done it again. He has managed a very good opening number for his film, not just in the regional version but also in the Hindi version. It was a humble beginning with Baahubali: The Beginning, though, but ever since then, he has consistently scored in the 10s, 20s, 30s and 40s for the first-day collections. Barring Radhe Shyam, which looked doomed when its first trailer arrived, Prabhas has been driving the box office rather consistently.

In fact, exactly the same time last year when Adipurush arrived, the film had taken an excellent start of 36 crores.
