After debuting on August 14, the movie has already become a global success. You Think Bollywood Is Big? Meet Telugu Cinema
Image
“Pan Indian” is a fairly new phrase that entered the daily lexicon of the Indian movie enthusiast about 10 years ago. It all started in 2015 with the release of director S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning, the first of a two-part historical fantasy that originally was made in the Telugu language, which is spoken in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in South India. The film was an instant hit and by the end of its run had become the second-highest-grossing Indian movie of all time, taking in $80 million at the domestic box office.

Until Baahubali: The Beginning, there was no need for a film to be called “pan-Indian,” since it was assumed that only the Hindi film industry — or Bollywood, as it came to be known outside of India — could produce a film that would be watched across the length and breadth of this culturally and linguistically diverse country.

Indian Producers’ Associations Warn of Box Office Bloodbath After Donald Trump’s 100% Tariff Bombshell
Image
Indian producers associations are sounding the alarm over President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to implement a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films entering the U.S. market, a move that threatens the $100 million theatrical business that Indian cinema currently enjoys in America.

Shibashish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India, cautions that it’s still early to fully assess the situation. “It is a little early to comment as global film industries and stakeholders are still processing what is the objective of the statement by President Trump, and what exactly it will solve for Hollywood. Also as we see from his other announcements on tariffs, things change till it’s implemented,” Sarkar tells Variety.

If implemented, Sarkar believes the immediate impact would be on theatrical distribution. “Indian films do about $100 million dollar +/- at the gross box office level in the U.S. If this tariff gets implemented, either the...

When Viewers Pointed Out Baahubali 2’s Striking Similarity To A Beloved Animated Film!
Image
Baahubali 2 Compared To The Lion King? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Indian cinema was never the same after S.S. Rajamouli’s epic period actioner Baahubali: The Beginning and its sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion came out. The visionary director raised the bar for emotionally charged storytelling, epic war action scenes, and powerful performances. The films not only captivated the audience in a big way but also set the box office on fire, breaking myriad records.

But an interesting thing happened after the release of the second film, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Some viewers pointed out surprising similarities between the Baabubali sequel and the cult animated film The Lion King, which came out in 1994.

Similarity No.1: Basic Plot

The first similarity was the basic plot itself, which revolves around how a rightful and deserving heir returns to rule the kingdom after many years and to take the throne back from a tyrannical ruler.

Revisiting Rajamouli’s 2017 epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits SS Rajamouli’s epic sequel to the hit Baahubali, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which released in 2017 in this special feature. We also hear from the director, who discusses the challenges of making part 2, the amazing experience working with Prabhas, and the answer to everyone’s burning question—plus more!

Sequels are a cursed breed. No matter how good—and usually they are not meritoriously unquestionable—they are compared unfavourably with the first film, unless it’s a rare case like Lage Raho Munnabhai or The Godfather 2 which were actually better than the first film.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is a separate case. It is actually not a sequel, since both the films were shot simultaneously and released two years part. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is much bigger than the first film in every sense. It is far deeper and dreamier, drawing us into its magic and...

2024 Action Movie Is The Second Highest-Grossing Indian Movie Ever, After Recently Surpassing Joker 2's Box Office
Image
Joker: Folie à Deux has suffered yet another unfortunate milestone. The sequel, which followed the $1 billion 2019 movie, had a massive $200 million budget. Unfortunately, it failed to capture much respect from critics and audiences. Rather than enjoying the breakout success of the original, it earned just $206 million. That total may have exceeded Joker 2's enormous budget, but it could not make up for the losses incurred by a high marketing budget and the cuts that theaters took from the profits. The movie became an instant box office failure.

Joker 2 also faced challenges from critics. The movie earned a 31% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 32% Popcornmeter score. These poor responses contributed to toxic word-of-mouth. Audiences complained about its unnecessary transition into becoming a jukebox musical, and as Joaquin Phoenix's leading man became a shadow of his original self. The movie failed to become a crowd-pleaser, which is why...

Ramayana Part 1 (2026)
Viduthalai: Part II (2024) Movie Review: The Revolution Is Being Televised – Resistance In The Era Of Luigi Mangione
Ramayana Part 1 (2026)
The impact of mythology on Indian art and storytelling dates at least two thousand years back to the Nāṭyaśāstra and continues to be felt strongly in the current day. While some of the most beloved and revered works of Indian cinema are rooted directly in mythology, the influence goes down to the bedrock of how cinema tells stories. Mainstream and mass-oriented cinema especially draw significant influence from epics such as the “Ramayana” and the “Mahabharata”, often wearing the association openly and blatantly on its sleeve.

In recent years, audiences and critics have expressed exasperation with multiple tropes of storytelling in mainstream Indian cinema, many of which can be traced back to the aforementioned mythological epics. These tropes include nonlinear plots, long-form storytelling, and the centering of a near-godly central figure. When seen through a modern lens, these tropes manifest as film narratives with excessive flashback or frame narrative portions, overlong runtimes stretched across multiple films,...

Image
Refresh for latest…: It was smooth sailing for Disney’s Moana 2 this weekend as it reached $600M global following last frame‘s record-breaking bow. The running split is even for the splashy sequel, with $300M domestic and $300M from the international box office.

The full overseas frame was $103.7M in 52 markets, repping a 41% drop. Japan was new this weekend with $6.5M (including previews), for the market’s biggest non-local opening of 2024; biggest December opening ever for an animated title and the No. 3 biggest launch weekend for Walt Disney Animation Studios (behind Frozen and Frozen 2).

Some other key stats here — before we dig into further detail below — include Moana 2 becoming the No. 5 movie of 2024 worldwide, surpassing the entire run of the first Moana at current rates and charting as the No. 8 studio release of the year overseas (and sans holidays).

Pushpa 2 Worldwide Box Office Day 1: Clocks The Biggest Opening Of All Time, Beats Rrr With 25% Higher Collection
Image
Pushpa 2 Worldwide Box Office Day 1: Beats Rrr’s 223 Crores (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 has lived up to all extraordinary projections made weeks before its grand release. From the beginning, the magnum opus was touted to be the next big thing in Indian cinema, and it has justified the hype. Overtaking Rrr, the film clocked an earth-shattering number at the worldwide box office on day 1. It’s now the biggest Indian opener globally by a big margin!

Before the Pushpa sequel, only two Indian films managed to earn over 200 crore gross globally on the opening day. Interestingly, both films were SS Rajamouli’s directorial (Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Rrr). So, a non-ss Rajamouli has crossed the 200 crore globally for the first time. So, it’s really a big achievement for director Sukumar, Allu Arjun, and the entire team.

Maharaja Box Office (China): Registers Impressive Pre-Sales; Vijay Sethupathi To Make Prabhas Taste A Defeat With 55% More Screens?

Maharaja Box Office (China): With Impressive Pre-Sales, Vijay Sethupathi Starrer Hints At Defeating Prabhas’ Biggie? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The countdown is set for Maharaja’s grand release in China. The film is just five days away from hitting theatres, and box office enthusiasts are excited to see how it performs in the country. In the past, Indian films have performed exceptionally well there, earning more than their entire global lifetime collection. However, as far as the Tamil industry is concerned, there aren’t any big money spinners, and that is expected to change with the Vijay Sethupathi starrer.

In China, Indian films with grounded stories and a drama quotient tend to perform brilliantly. Interestingly, almost every larger-than-life biggie that was a blockbuster in India has failed to make it big in China. Smaller films like Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium, Andhadhun, and Mom have fetched massive numbers in the country.

Prabhas Turns Down Major Role in Padmaavat: Here’s the Reason! (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Prabhas, one of India’s most famous actors, was once offered a significant role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 historical drama Padmaavat. However, he ultimately turned it down. Here’s what happened.

In Padmaavat, Prabhas was considered for the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh, the noble Rajput ruler who played a significant part in the film’s storyline alongside Deepika Padukone’s Padmavati and Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji. By the time casting was almost done, the filmmaker had one crucial role left to fill—Maharawal Ratan Singh.

Despite the offer, Prabhas declined. By then, he was already filming Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Additionally, when he reviewed the script, Prabhas reportedly felt the role wasn’t as impactful or central as his character in Baahubali. Maharawal Ratan Singh’s role didn’t match the prominence...

‘Kalki 2898 Ad’ Flies At Specialty Box Office
Image
There wasn’t a lot new opening this weekend specialty-wise but few notable holdovers continued to crank in moderate release, namely Kalki 2898 Ad, which is on fire, as well as Thelma and Kinds of Kindness.

Kalki will end at No. 8 on 925 screens in week two, the second weekend in the top 10 for the Telugu sci-fi epic from Prathyangira Cinemas, which was No. 5 a week ago. That’s unusual, as Indian films tend to do most of their business opening weekend. Kalki, also outgrossed Kill, a Hindi action film that debuted this weekend.

With a $1.79 million gross and a cume of $16 million, Kalki is one of the highest grossing Indian film in North America in well over a year, according to data provided by Comscore. Hugely popular Rrr in 2022 and Animal last year both ended their runs with about $15 million domestic. Paathan hit $17.5 million in 2023. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took in $20 million in 2017.

Box Office: Kalki 2898 Ad (Hindi) Is Prabhas’ Fourth Biggest Opener, Below Baahubali: The Conclusion (Hindi), Adipurush (Hindi) & Saaho (Hindi)
Image
Box Office – Kalki 2898 Ad [Hindi] is fourth biggest opener of Prabhas, is below Baahubali: The Conclusion [Hindi], Adipurush [Hindi] and Saaho [Hindi](Photo Credit –Instagram)

Prabhas has done it again. He has managed a very good opening number for his film, not just in the regional version but also in the Hindi version. It was a humble beginning with Baahubali: The Beginning, though, but ever since then, he has consistently scored in the 10s, 20s, 30s and 40s for the first-day collections. Barring Radhe Shyam, which looked doomed when its first trailer arrived, Prabhas has been driving the box office rather consistently.

In fact, exactly the same time last year when Adipurush arrived, the film had taken an excellent start of 36 crores. However, 2024 is a different year, and hence, everything has to be done with caution. One is not seeing those 20 crores and 30 crores opening day numbers anymore, and survival is the key.
