Alan Bergman, Oscar-Winning ‘The Way We Were’ Composer, Dies at 99
Image
Alan Bergman, the Oscar-, Grammy- and Emmy-winning songwriter whose lyric-writing partnership with his wife Marilyn lasted more than six decades and produced such hits as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “The Way We Were” and “In the Heat of the Night,” has died. He was 99.

Bergman died on Thursday night at his home in Los Angeles, per the New York Times.

Marilyn Bergman, who died in January 2022, was the first woman president and chairman of the board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), a leading performing-rights society for music-makers. Alan soldiered on even after her death, continuing to put words to music.

The Bergmans, who penned hundreds of songs, mostly for movies and TV, bridged the traditional Great American Songbook era of Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin with the more modern pop sensibility of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Their poetic touch, combined with...

What Happened To Azula After Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
If there's a television canon, then "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is definitely in it. Since its debut on Nickelodeon in 2005, the animated fantasy show has remained beloved by its oldest fans and won the hearts of countless new ones. Personally, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has one of my favorite character ensembles in all of TV. Its leads were young enough for the target audience to relate to, yet complex enough for adults to be just as rewarded watching them.

Take Zuko (Dante Basco), the scarred prince of the Fire Nation who goes from villain to hero. Best redemption arc ever? It's up there. But standing next to Zuko as one of the show's most complex characters is his sister, Princess Azula. While her brother was always torn between good and evil, Azula relishes the latter. She seems like the "perfect" Princess: powerful, ruthless, and favored by her father Fire Lord...

Nina Dobrev’s Most Stunning Heels—And the Ones That Hurt Her Feet!
Image
While she has claimed to be 5’7″ on Twitter, Nina Dobrev’s actual height is estimated to be around 5ft 5¼ (165.7 cm), and she wears a US shoe size 10.

Though she once joked, “Actually… I’m starting a new thing and rebelling against ridiculously high heels. It’s inhumane,” she continues to wear stunning designer heels on the red carpet to add extra height and elevate her looks.

From Stuart Weitzman to Christian Louboutin, Dobrev knows how to balance style and comfort—even if she ditches the heels the moment the cameras stop flashing.

Nina Dobrev humorously tweets about her height, claiming to be 5’7″ and suggesting a life-size cardboard cutout for Coachella (Credit: Nina Dobrev’s Twitter)

The average height for American women is approximately 5’4″ (162.5 cm). Nina Dobrev is about ¾ of an inch (or approximately 3.2 cm) taller than the average American woman.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Already Has the Perfect Sequel But You've Not Heard Of It
Image
Though the animated series of Avatar: The Last Airbender ended in 2008, Team Avatar's story continued over the years as a series of graphic novels – and one in particular, The Promise is the sequel that fans of the original TV series have been looking for. The book is a gripping, morally complex tale, which pushes Aang and the rest of Team Avatar to the next level of their character development.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise – written by Gene Yang, with art by Studio Gurihiru artist Chifuyu Sasaki – finds the TV show's beloved characters grappling with a new set of moral dilemmas, as they work to adapt to the new circumstances in the wake of the series finale. Particularly heartwrenching for long-time fans is Zuko's plot.

Fearful that he will take after his father upon becoming Firelord, makes Aang promise to end his life if any shade of evil shows itself in Zuko again.

5 Reasons Why Sailor Moon R's Fiore Is Perfect for Tuxedo Mask (& 5 Reasons Why It's Sailor Moon)
Image
Sailor Moon R: The Movie, The Promise of the Rose is the first movie in the Sailor Moon series. The R stands for romance, and The Promise of the Rose fulfills the promise of that premise. The movie introduces a new character, Fiore, an alien who lost his home planet.

Fiore has deep ties with Tuxedo Mask, and the story of his close bond with him sheds some more light on Tuxedo Mask's backstory. Fiore and Tuxedo Mask, or Mamoru, were close friends as children, and it's heavily implied that they had a puppy love that would have evolved into something deeper if Fiore wasn't torn away from Mamoru. After years of searching, Fiore finds Mamoru again in The Promise of the Rose, only to see that he's in a relationship with another person--Sailor Moon.

The 12 Best Movie Trailers Of 2024
Image
Ah, movie trailers. Are they still a unique medium unto themselves that are enjoyable to watch on their own? While the function and ethos of the trailer is the same as it ever was — to provide a first look at upcoming cinema releases, and sell the public on them by trying to promote their tone/premise/cast/etc. — there's no question that they've changed over the years from being endearingly idiosyncratic to being almost completely homogenous. After all, who isn't sick of hearing a slowed-down remix or cover version of a pop song stretched out over three minutes, intermittently broken up by dead air for punchy lines of dialogue and/or orchestra stings?

Trends in trailers have always been a thing, from the "cast of thousands" overselling of the 1930s and '40s to the "in a world..." Don Lafontaine '90s era to the "Bwaaam"-ified post-"Inception" period of the '10s,...

DC Unveils Hush's New Plot, Turning the Gotham Villain into an A-List Threat
Image
Warning: Spoilers for "The Promise" in Justice League Unlimited #1Dc Comics has unveiled Hush’s newest plot, transforming the Batman villain into a major threat. Hush’s plan spells disaster for not just Batman, but also for each member of the Bat-Family and the Dark Knight's iconic rogues gallery. Hush's new schemes also build upon his plan from the original Batman: Hush storyline by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, setting up DC’s anticipated sequel as a worthwhile successor.

"The Promise" by Loeb and Lee, a three-page prelude published in Justice League Unlimited #1, sets up the brand-new sequel by reintroducing readers to Hush. Interspersed with narration from Batman, readers watch as Hush moves paper pawns of Batman and his friends and foes, before the final splash page reveals pictures of iconic Batman characters tied together with a red string.

The message is abundantly clear: Hush will be hunting...

Batman: Hush Sequel Shares First Look at Its New Suits
Image
Spoilers for Hush 2 Prelude!DC Comics’ Batman has more villains in his rogues gallery than he can sometimes fit in Arkham Asylum, with Hush being one of his deadliest and most unique foes thanks to a past that’s inexorably linked to The Dark Knight in ways that define the character. Premiering as the titular foe in an iconic comic story from over two decades ago, Hush returns to the fold with a new mission and costumed look that puts his original design to shame.

Introduced in 2002’s Hush, by Jeff Loeb and Jim Lee, Hush, aka Tommy Elliot, was the childhood friend of Bruce Wayne, who, after Bruce’s Crime Alley loss and eventual transition into Batman, used his skills as a world-renowned surgeon to moonlight as a supervillain looking to ruin both Bruce and Batman’s life.

‘Road Diary’ Review: Bruce Springsteen Documentary Brings Joy and Faces Loss
Image
The third Bruce Springsteen documentary by director Thom Zimny to play at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” is also the biggest, the most expansive and the most all-encompassing. Ostensibly a chronicle of the world tour that Springsteen undertook last year, his first in six years, it also functions as a career retrospective of sorts. But more than that, it becomes a story of life and loss, because that’s the singular position occupied by the 2023-2024 tour.

Where “The Promise: The Making of Darkness of the Edge of Town” (TIFF 2010) was tightly focused on the tortured production of Springsteen’s 1978 album and “Western Stars” (TIFF 2019) was a document of a private performance of a more recent album, “Road Diary” takes a Springsteen concert as a template of sorts, which means it mixes joy and dread and love and regret and exuberance...

Avatar: The Last Airbender - Which Comics To Read First

Avatar comics extend the beloved TV series, offering new perspectives and filling in gaps left by the show's conclusion. The Lost Adventures anthology maintains the show's lighthearted vibe while providing deeper insights into familiar characters. Graphic novel trilogies like The Promise and The Search delve into complex storylines post-tv series, enriching the Avatar universe.

Sturgill Simpson’s ‘Metamodern Sounds’ Is Still Reshaping Country Music
Image
The week Sturgill Simpson’s breakthrough, generation-defining second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was released, the Number One song on country radio was Brantley Gilbert’s Nickelback-ified ode to women in short shorts and the boys who bring them to the tailgate. It was called “Bottoms Up,” and it wasn’t an aberration: The climate on Music Row in 2014 was still eagerly chasing the bro-country sound that Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Gilbert helped turn into a reliable cash cow. So much so that the only single by...

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 8 Review: Why Is Jack’s Arm Bleeding
Ramón Rodríguez in Will Trent (2023)
Triggering memories seemed to be the theme of Will Trent Season 2 Episode 8.

The series has delved into Will's childhood this season, and it finally revealed the traumatic event that he had blocked out for years.

Elsewhere, when Michael and Angie investigated an Army Ranger's death, it brought up some feelings about Michael's time in the military.

We haven't even started discussing how important Lily's case was since she had been missing for 13 years, and certain clues from her case triggered Will.

As mentioned in the Will Trent Spoilers, Lily's case reminded me of The Promise episode from CSI: Vegas because no one initially took her disappearance seriously, and the trail went cold.

There are 60,000 missing Black women in this country. We’re going to get justice for this one.

Will Trent Season 2 Episode 8 Spoilers: A Cold Case Triggers More of Will's Flashbacks
Ramón Rodríguez in Will Trent (2023)
We're in the last three episodes of Will Trent's shortened Season 2, so expect things to get intense and chaotic, at least with the cases.

The spoilers for Will Trent Season 2 Episode 8 tease that as the Gbi investigates the cold case of a girl who disappeared 13 years ago,  it triggers more flashbacks of Will's childhood trauma.

As Will deals with his memories, he and Angie try to rebuild their relationship in a healthier way, so it's more than a trauma bond.

In the main story, the Gbi locates the body of a missing girl, Lily Watkins. She's been missing for 13 years, so this case overwhelms everyone.

Her murder sounds brutal since she was strangled, but she fought back.

Amanda mentions in the weekly promo that 60,000 Black women are missing in the United States, and that sounded very much like The Promise episode from CSI: Vegas when the team found the body...

On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Appointment Viewing for “Stoners, Seekers, Archivists, and Drinkers”

It took more than 1,700 miles and an honest-to-God movie theater for me to discover that the livestream I’ve been wanting my entire adult life tapes weekly just ten minutes down the street in LA. Thou Announce New Album, Reveal Single “I Feel Nothing When You Cry”: Stream
Image
Sludge metal band Thou have announced a new album, Umbilical, out May 31st via Sacred Bones. As a preview, the lead single, “I Feel Nothing When You Cry,” is out today.

Known for their tectonic sludge-doom, the Nola outfit speeds things up on its latest track. A propulsive groove sets the pace and locks in, though it is slathered in textures of feedback and harsh howling vocals. If there was an accessible punk song buried under there, Thou — never one for compromises — manage to rough it up beyond recognition.

Umbilical will be the group’s third full-length on Sacred Bones, following its 2020 collaborative effort with Emma Ruth Rundle, May Our Chambers Be Full. The band shared the following artist statement regarding Umbilical:

“They’ve called us anarchists, criminals, foreign meddlers, lunatics, dispossessed, relativists, utilitarians, egoists, passion maximizers, ascetics, negators of everything. Clearly, the ‘Thou’ experiment is never going to appeal...

Avatar: What Happened To Aang After The Last Airbender Ended
Image
Aang lived a shortened life after defeating Fire Lord Ozai, aging rapidly and passing away at 66. Aang established the world seen in The Legend of Korra, making technological advancements and rebuilding the Air Nation. Aang's children, especially Tenzin, played crucial roles in reviving the Airbenders and continuing his legacy.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's series finale concludes with Aang defeating Fire Lord Ozai and bringing an end to the Hundred Year War, but his story didn't end there. Thanks to tie-in comics that pick up after the end of The Last Airbender season 3, as well as the presence of Aang's descendants in The Legend of Korra, what happened to Aang after Avatar has been partially revealed. Much of Aang's life force was drained after being frozen for so long, meaning he aged rapidly in his later years and died aged 66, before his grandchildren were born.

Review: CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 3 Brings the Show Back
Image
The following contains major spoilers from CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 3, "Rat Packed," which debuted Sunday, March 3 on CBS.

One of the reasons that the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was so appealing was Las Vegas: a different setting than the usual New York or Los Angeles procedurals. Over the years, the show made excellent use of its Sin City location, and CSI: Vegas has largely done the same. Season 3, Episode 3, "Rat Packed," features a case that's firmly Las Vegas and would have worked perfectly as a classic CSI story, and that gets the season back on track.

At the same time, Marisa Tam's script offers up the final resolution to Josh Folsom's ongoing story arc -- at least technically. Folsom faces a review board to determine his future as a CSI, but the episode makes clear that their ruling is both a period on that sentence and a jumping-off...

Review: CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 2 Has Closure, But No Punch
Image
An intriguing closure for fans of CSI: Vegas, solving the Raphael Tarquenio case with a unique twist. Emotional impact falls short in the resolution, lacking the punch of previous episodes. The subplot with Serena as a mole within the CSI team feels forced, resulting in a lackluster reveal.

The following contains major spoilers for CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 2, "Scar Tissue," which debuted Sunday, February 26 on CBS.

CSI: Vegas creates a neat duology with "Scar Tissue," providing Catherine Willows' side of the Raphael Tarquenio case. The episode allows audiences to see Catherine's point of view on the drug baron, and it does serve up the answers that viewers will be expecting to get. However, it lacks the punch CSI provided with its Season 3 premiere.

"Scar Tissue" picks up largely where Season 3, Episode 1, "The Reaper" left off. With Josh Folsom sidelined given his release from jail, it's up to Catherine to ensure...
