Hollywood has long dominated the crime genre, but some of the best detective films of the past decade have come from unexpected places. While South Korean cinema has gained worldwide recognition in recent years, certain films still manage to slip under the radar—despite delivering everything fans of the genre could ask for. One such film is Veteran, a 2015 action-thriller about a determined cop taking on a corrupt and untouchable heir.
Veteran’s success in South Korea made it one of the country’s highest-grossing films, but internationally, it never received the same level of attention as hits like Train to Busan or Parasite. Even more overlooked is its 2024 sequel, I, the Executioner, which raises the stakes with a darker mystery. Together, these two films form one of the most compelling detective sagas in recent memory – yet remain largely undiscovered by audiences outside South Korea. For crime thriller fans, they...

South Korean action comedy “Veteran”, written and directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, came out in 2015. It was a huge success which grossed over US$92M and became the all-time 5th highest-grossing film in the local cinema history. A sequel with Ryoo directing, Hwang Jung-min and Oh Dal-su reprising their roles was soon in the works, but it only hit the screens titled “I, The Executioner” nine years later.
This time around, detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) and his Violent Crimes Investigation Unit members have to deal with Haechi, a serial killer and a vigilante rolled into one. Haechi only kills criminals who deserved to die, according to him anyway. Furthermore, when the judicial system fails to discipline the guilty, his punishment of these criminals has gained him a following on social media. Detective Seo is just the opposite, he believes in doing good police work and therefore he is willing to protect these kinds of criminals.

Thrilling movies can belong to any genre, but they all have one thing in common: pulse-raising sequences and action that keep viewers at the edge of their seats. In South Korean cinema, the biggest blockbusters are usually action thrillers; so many of them are also internationally acclaimed features that often make their way on 'best of' lists. Some honorable mentions include Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi marvel The Host and the beloved action comedy Veteran.

Veteran The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Dorit Kemsley took to Instagram to share an update on her son Jagger after reports of him being hospitalized broke last month.
The 48-year-old revealed that she got to go trick-or-treating with both of her children on Halloween, something she didn’t expect given her 10-year-old son’s medical woes over the last month.
“The past month has been very difficult for our family,” she started in an emotional statement accompanied by a video of her and her family dressed up as the Flintstones for Halloween.
The concerning post reads, “Jagger had two surgeries for septic hip and had to stay in the hospital.” Dorit admitted that there was a “setback this week.”

Adapted from the fantasy comic book from 2019, Netflixs Hellbound includes some of the most talented actors from South Korea. Korean-made crime-comedy-thriller “I The Executioner,” a sequel to 2015 hit ‘Veteran,” continued to top South Korea’s weekend box office. Its victory, however, was a hollow one as Korea’s overall box office slumped to its lowest level this year.
Nationwide, Korea’s roughly 2,500 cinemas together earned just $4.39 million between Friday and Sunday.
In several previous years, the month of October has been weak for cinemas in Korea, but the latest weekend total was a lower mid-October mark than either Covid-blighted 2022 or 2023’s recovery year.
The latest figures are in line with some of the gloomy discussion at the recently-concluded Busan International Film Festival, where the difficulties currently faced by theatrical cinema and the companies that supply and distribute it, were major talking points.
“I, The Executioner” earned $1.08 million in its fifth full weekend session, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). The...

This year, Toronto International Film Festival was back. TIFF typically kicks off the North American fall festival season alongside Telluride, but it has had a rocky past couple of years. The pandemic in 2020 put a temporary pause on in-person festivities, and 2021-2022 featured a tentative rollout of hybrid festivities. Though 2023 committed to total in-person attendance, the SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 limited the amount of American celebrity presence on the red carpet; festival buzz too had been similarly muted. This year’s edition, however, witnessed the famed festival in full swing. With 278 films in this year’s programming, the 2024 edition of TIFF was jam-packed with Berlin/Cannes favorites, Awards season’s to-be-darlings, and of course, a good chunk of independent cinema.

Ryoo Seung-wan, also known as “Action Kid,” is one of the major players in the Korean film industry today. He’s most famous for directing the 5th all-time highest grossing film in South Korean cinema history, action-comedy detective film “Veteran” (2015). In more recent years, he wrote and directed the South Korean entry for Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards, “Escape from Mogadishu” (2021) – a Korean peninsular analog to “Argo” set in Mogadishu, Somalia.
This year, Ryoo Seung-wan showed up to Toronto International Film Festival with “I, the Executioner,” the long-awaited sequel to “Veteran.” Hwang Jung-min returns as Seo Do-cheol: still a dedicated detective, but this time also an unenthused husband and even more lackluster father. Though his son is mercilessly bullied at school, Seo Do-cheol is blasé about the situation. Local blockbuster “I The Executioner” dominated the South Korea box office for a second weekend. Its cumulative total reached $40 million after ten days on release.
The film, a sequel to 2015 crime comedy drama “The Veteran,” “I, The Executioner” released a week earlier with little serious opposition from new release titles. Those conditions held true in the film’s second weekend, and the film’s first non-holiday frame.
Between the latest Friday and Sunday, the film earned $6.63 million, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its 10-day cumulative is $40.7 million, earned from 5.61 million spectators.
The weekend figures represent a steep 56% week-on-week decline. But the comparison is atypical as the previous weekend represented the first few days of a five-day holiday. The film’s market share remained dominant, at over 71%.

Korean crime comedy action film “I The Executioner” has amassed more than $30 million of gross revenues on its sixth day of release, making it one of the fastest movies in local history to reach that mark.
Kobis, the cinema data service operated by the Korean Film Council, reported that the film had reached 3.71 million admissions and a gross haul of $27.2 million by the evening of Tuesday, its fifth full day in cinemas.
On Wednesday morning, the film’s distributor Cj Enm said that the film’s ticket sales total had surpassed 4 million by 9am local time. That would give an estimated box office total of $30 million, that will be confirmed by independent data later in the day.

South Korea has redefined the action genre over the past twenty-five years. Park Chan Wook's Oldboy exploded the revenge thriller paradigm forever, offering one of cinema's greatest twist endings. Kim Jee-woon's The Good the Bad The Weird showed audiences a modern Western they could never have dreamed of, and Yeon Sang-ho's Train to Busan perfected the balanced chemistry of exquisite action set pieces, blood-curdling horror, and tear-inducing character drama. Now it's the cop drama's turn for South Korean reinvention as Ryoo Seung-Wan's sequel to Veteran, I, the Executioner, enjoys its world premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

“I, the Executioner,” Ryoo Seung-wan’s sequel to his 2015 action-comedy “Veteran,” scales back on its predecessor’s laughs in order to focus more closely on — as well as to examine — the violence of its police protagonists. Although undoubtedly entertaining, Ryoo’s follow-up is also highly introspective, weaving a serial killer mystery that makes for a surprising mirror to the series’ lead.
Roguish detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) returns in a dynamic blast of an opening salvo, as the camera weaves in and out of (and above) an illicit casino, as a police sting operation unfolds. Amusing action soon ensues, reminiscent of the first film’s zesty, high-impact sequences, and with its central conceit in tow: Seo and his returning, idiosyncratic team are either hyper-competent or bumbling fools, depending on what the script demands. Sometimes, they’re both these things at once, as the film’s prologue provides a dose of the familiar.

Crime action film ‘I The Executioner” topped the South Korea cinema box office weekend with an utterly dominant $15 million haul. The session represented the first half of a long holiday in Korea.
Data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) showed that the film enjoyed a market share of 86% between Friday and Sunday. It was watched by 2.09 million spectators.
That represented the second biggest opening weekend score by any film this year in Korea, behind the $20.8 million attained by “The Roundup: Punishment” in late April. Nationwide, the latest weekend was the third-highest Friday-Sunday session of 2024, at $17.5 million, behind the first two weekends of release of “Punishment.”

Remnant 2 offers a number of difficulty settings for its campaign, and most of these options unlock unique rewards upon completion. As a Soulslike game that shakes things up with a mix between swords, guns, and other eclectic weapons, Remnant 2 offers a high level of challenge to those who seek it. Beating the game on its more intense difficulty settings could prove intensely hard, so the value of the rewards for completing such a task is especially important.
The full slate of difficulties offered in Remnant 2 comprises Survivor, Veteran, Nightmare, and Apocalypse, a roster of names that makes it clear just how hard any of these can be. As the easiest difficulty to beat the game on, Survivor doesn't offer unique rewards, but each setting above it introduces something new to urge players onward. Cinema box office in South Korea amounted to a dismal $5.45 million over the weekend, propelling “Alien: Romulus” back to top spot, despite the film’s steep week-on-week decline. Among new releases there was joy for a Korean-produced panda documentary and disappointment for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
“Alien: Romulus” earned $905,000 between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. That represented a 45% week-on-week decline and market share of less than 17%, but it pushed the horror franchise title to a $14.0 million cumulative since releasing on Aug. 14.
Early September has historically been a weak spot on the calendar for Korean cinema business as the summer season fades out and the biggest local titles delay their releases until the Chuseok (or Korean thanksgiving) holiday season towards the end of the month. The latest Friday-Sunday aggregate followed that seasonal pattern and represented the third weakest weekend haul of the year.

"If the situation turns dangerous, are we allowed to response with force?" Capelight Pictures has debuted a new official US trailer for the Korean action thriller titled I, The Executioner, which will be screening at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival soon this month. It first premiered in Cannes in the Midnight section there and should get more good reviews. This is a sequel to director Ryoo Seung-wan's 2015 film titled Veteran, though with a new title for this next thriller. I, The Executioner follows detective Seo Do-cheol, head of the Violent Crime Investigation Division, as he faces a major crisis. TIFF hypes this up: "the film's critique of vigilantism and the abuse of social media and its reflection on societal disillusionment with the legal system are timely - rooted in a collective global consciousness. Spectacular action sets and carefully orchestrated editing — enhanced by the chilling sound design — offer a high level...

The 15th and final season of CBS’ “The Talk” will kick off on Monday, September 9, Soap Opera Network has learned. The news marks the first time since at least June that the veteran talk show will feature a slate of all-new episodes.
Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood are all expected back as co-hosts, with Rob Crabbe continuing to serve as executive producer/showrunner.
In the case of Underwood, the final season fulfills a two-year deal she signed back in 2022 which would see her continuing to co-host the daytime talk show through Season 15 and provided her with a first-look development deal with CBS Studios.
The final season of “The Talk” will conclude in December.
“The Talk broke new ground when it launched 14 years ago by returning daytime talk to CBS with a refreshing and award-winning format,” said Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment, and David Stapf,...

This post contains spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't been on the steadiest of courses since sticking an unprecedented, multi-billion-dollar landing with "Avengers: Endgame," but even when the water was at its choppiest, the studio at least knew it had a box office ace up its sleeve with "Deadpool & Wolverine." But while this was certainly a comfort, it was also a tad awkward given that Marvel Studios absorbed the franchise after Disney absorbed 20th Century Fox. If the expectation going forward was that Marvel would wipe the old Fox slate clean and start fresh with the shipwrecked X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, where the heck did Deadpool fit in the company's overall narrative arc?
Of course, Deadpool does as Deadpool likes, especially when he's got Og Wolverine Hugh Jackman in tow, which meant Marvel Studios had no choice but to acknowledge and -- big gulp...

Valorant may be counted as one of many arena-based squad shooters currently out, but it has a special place in the hearts of many fans of this genre. While titles such as Overwatch, Fortnite, and Warzone have their place in modern times, Valorant takes a more nostalgic approach.
This is why it’s become a hit with many people who enjoy how first-person shooter multiplayer games used to feel in the past. One Redditor has shared a particular quality of the game that enhances their enjoyment, and we’re sure others have noticed too!
Valorant Is Not as Demanding as Other First-Person Shooter Titles Valorant‘s strategic gameplay offers a balanced experience.
Throwing on any gameplay video of Fps titles in recent times can feel overwhelming to the senses. Not only are there entirely new mechanics such as power-ups, special abilities, and arena hazards, but gameplay has also fundamentally changed.

Ryoo Seung-wan, the South Korean film director who was last month in Cannes with “I, The Executioner,” says that his next picture will be an espionage action movie.
It is pitched as “depicting North and South Korean secret agents clashing while [also] uncovering crimes occurring at the border with Vladivostok, Russia.”
Currently titled, “Humint,” a reference to espionage industry’s shorthand for collection of intelligence through humans, rather than signals or data, the new film is to be produced by his Filmmaker R&k company and distributed by New.
Ryoo also says that throughout his career he has sought to change genres and that “Humint” will represent a “more mature espionage action” picture than some of his previous efforts.
Ryoo will release “I, The Executioner” at an unspecified date in the second half of this year. He has already settled the casting of “Humint” and has scheduled full-scale production of the...

Ryoo Seung-wan has been a pillar of the South Korean film industry for over 20 years, respected there for his keen social observation and thrilling action. But Europe’s great film festivals have feted him conspicuously less than some of his more internationally well-known peers. The Cannes Film Festival recently took a step toward correcting that record in 2024.
Ryoo, 50, made his first and only trip to Cannes back in 2005 with the gritty boxing drama Crying Fist, co-starring his brother, Ryoo Seung-bum, today a major star, and Korean cinema icon Choi Min-sik, then riding high thanks to his iconic role in Park Chan-wook’s Old Boy (2003).
“Crying Fist was very well received, but since we were in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival, it wasn’t screened in Cannes’ Grand Lumière Theater,” Ryoo recalls. “Back then, I was much younger and everything just felt fresh, fun and exciting. But I remember...

„Smugglers” is a pretty bright and fun crime film that also delivers some really insightful look at Korea as a Western-aspiring country and at the pains of poverty. Most impressing is perhaps that it manages so well to do all of it at once, without slowing down the pace. The main characters of this female-led story are far from mysterious, dark, Scorsese-like figures that would encourage us to ponder the intricacies of human psyche in its never ending lust for power. In “Smugglers”, going against the law is a pragmatic decision born out of economic despair. Struggling fisherwomen of 1970's Jeju town face the choice in the film's opening minutes – keep diving for stinky snails of diminishing quality, trying to make ends meet, or take a chance at moving Western merchandise left on the sea bottoms of the Korea Strait. American cigarettes, cosmetics, clothes and all...

Sydney Sweeney has starred in a string of hits of late, and her Hollywood career has truly taken off. The actress has delivered power-packed performances, showcasing her range as an artist. From her role as a troubled nun in Immaculate to a lovestruck woman in Anyone But You, Sweeney has been winning hearts.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the industry feels that way about the actress. Carol Baum thinks that the Euphoria star is not worth the hype she has been generating of late. Sweeney, who is known for speaking her mind, clapped back, and the drama has only intensified since then.
Sweeney came under a verbal attack (Source: Euphoria) Carol Baum is not a fan of Sydney Sweeney
Carol Baum is a very well-respected producer and executive in Hollywood. With projects such as Read Ringers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to her credit, she is a force to be reckoned with.

In Berlin with “The Roundup: Punishment,” part four of the action movie series that he created and stars in, the larger-than-life Korean American Don Lee finds himself simultaneously in multiple timely and lucrative businesses.
These include the Marvel superhero business, the Korea-to-Hollywood remake business, “The Roundup” franchise and its multiple spinoff possibilities. Lee may even be in the business of saving Korean cinema, which is currently having one of its periodic wobbles.
“What we have to do is make really, really fun entertaining movies. Put them in cinemas, so that everyone will come back to the theaters. “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos will reteam with Element Pictures on a remake of South Korean fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet,” Variety has learned.
Lanthimos — whose latest film, “Poor Things,” is nominated for 11 Oscars and just won five BAFTAs (including best actress for Emma Stone) — is expected to start shooting the movie in the U.K. and New York this summer. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and Cj Enm (previously named Cj Entertainment). It will mark the sixth collaboration between Lanthimos and Element Pictures.
The long-gestated project, which seems to be a perfect Lanthimos vehicle, is an eccentric black comedy involving a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

Well, it seems that the Dcu is indeed playing some kind of game that the people do not like at all. With Superman and Lois being two integral characters of cinematic storytelling, it comes naturally that the two characters will indeed be seen in James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman: Legacy.

The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.

Adam Driver is not certain if he will star in Heat 2, though he expressed interest in working with Michael Mann again. Plans for Driver to star in Heat 2 may have fallen through due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, or were never concrete in the first place. Michael Mann's next movie may be an adaptation of the Korean thriller Veteran, which could impact the development of Heat 2.
Adam Driver addresses the Heat 2 casting rumors. Directed by Michael Mann and released in 1995, the Los Angeles crime saga follows a game of cat-and-mouse between veteran LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) who is tasked with tracking down career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), while also exploring various facets of their personal lives. After the publication of his Heat 2 novel, rumors indicated that Mann was adapting it into a movie with Driver attached to star as a younger version of Neil McCauley.

After the publication of his Heat 2 novel, rumors indicated that Mann was adapting it into a movie with Driver attached to star as a younger version of Neil McCauley.

Although the Korean movie industry recently announced that the local box office recovered to 70% of Pre-pandemic Level, largely due to the success of “12.12: The Day” which was released on November 22nd and has earned 7,729,273 admissions by December 14, the situation with local cinema is not exactly hopeful, as a number of key figures and specialists mention. Particularly the fact that the majority of talent, including movie stars and filmmakers seem to move towards the rather more popular dramas, the gap left in the movie industry is felt more than ever. At the same time, though, not everything is all bad, since the mainstream movies still find ways out in festivals, streaming and distribution, while a number of intense social dramas remind of the second reason Korean cinema reached the heights it holds now (apart from crime thrillers).

Michael Mann is back at it. The director is making a triumphant return to the film world after a less-than-stellar reception to his 2015 tech thriller, Blackhat, which starred Chris Hemsworth. This year marks the release of Ferrari, his biopic of Enzo Ferrari starring Adam Driver, which is already generating positive word-of-mouth, including talk of a Best Supporting Actress nod for Driver’s co-star Penelope Cruz. Mann also has said that he will be moving on to a film adaptation of his crime novel sequel to his prolific 1995 drama, Heat. That project is also rumored to star Adam Driver.
According to Variety, Michael Mann is already at work on another project as he is now developing a remake of the Korean action-thriller-comedyVeteran from Ryoo Seung-wan. It is not yet known if Mann plans to direct the film or only be attached as a writer and producer. He is currently working with the U.

With Michael Mann finally returning to feature filmmaking this fall with Ferrari, which is enjoying a festival run ahead of its Christmas debut, the filmmaker is eying what to do next. It seems like an Adam Driver-led Heat 2 is very much in the cards––though one wonders if WB’s greenlit status will be dependent on the success of Ferrari. In the meantime, the director is also developing another project.
Variety reports the Miami Vice helmer is working on an adaptation of Ryoo Seung-wan’s 2015 crime thriller Veteran, a massive hit in South Korea as it is currently the 5th-highest-grossing film in the country. The crowd-pleaser follows a detective who is tracking down a young, wealthy, and privileged business owner who is running his own crime syndicate.
Currently in the development stage, it’s not decided yet if Mann will just produce and script or direct the project himself.

“Ferrari” director Michael Mann is planning to make a U.S. adaptation of South Korean crime thriller “Veteran.”
The project is at development stage, and Mann is working with the U.S. and Korean wings of Cj Enm, Korea’s leading film and TV conglomerate. It is currently undecided whether Mann himself will direct or just take production and writing credits.
“We are developing a script with Michael Mann, but his role and our schedule are not fixed yet,” a source close to Cj Enm told Variety.
Work halted on the project during the Hollywood screenwriters’ strike and it is unclear when development will pick up in earnest.
Mann is currently focusing on the development of “Heat 2,” which he recently confirmed as his next directing outing. The project, which is set up at Warner Bros., is the sequel to his genre-defining 1995 noir “Heat.”
