Disappointment starts with quote citation of Poland's current Minister of National Defence. Movie is overpumped, ready to explode with pathos, making no more space for anything else.
Scenario, music, cinematography, everything here is lacking, insufficient, artistically infertile.
I want to believe that talented men who were cast just had no place and possibility in this abhorrent scenario to spark anything to make their charcters feel like actual real human beings, instead of lifeless moving statues of Polish martyrdom.
And this is the main problem with our current Polish movies about national heroes - producers/directors simply seem to forget that people they want to honor with a movie were real people, with passions, upsides, downsides, with spark in eye, with tears on cheeks, taste of blood in mouth, full of honor, love, anger, fear.

Otherwise known as "Below the Surface". This is everything an action movie shouldn't be. The weird use of frosted glass cameras makes one feel like there is supposed to be another perspective but that is not really apparent. There is no real identity to any of the characters or any reason to feel invested in them. I sat down with some popcorn to enjoy a good submarine movie and got this barely literate garbage. The emotional content has two modes: Void and Over the top!! There is no personality either. I've never known a single war movie in my 63 years to stand so proudly on the pedestal of 'terrible' like this!! If you should see this on Prime, do yourself a favor and give it a miss!! If not, that's nearly 2 hours of your life you will never get back. I wish that I had consulted the ratings before viewing this. Unfortunately, the movie is labeled "Below the Surface" on Prime and is not easy to find under its original name!!
One of the best movies about submarine service. Received very good opinions from Navy officers. However is not for everybody, because lack of standard action and maritime terminology. Very minimalistic music and dark, artistic pictures. Definitely worth of seeing, but You need to be prepared this is not typical "hero war action" movie. More psychological thriller then anything else. For sure it will be interesting for people, who have knowledge about WWII history and are familiar with sea. It is hard to find more realistic picture about being inside dark, wet, tight, stuffy tube full of tremendous fear and lonely people. The best to watch in absolute dark room and with the headphones.
