Exclusive: Higher Ground has made a deal with 20th Century Studios for Merry Ex-Mas, a comedy script from David Bernstein that marks the first project Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company has set up outside its long association with Netflix.

The holiday-themed film begins with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus heading toward divorce court, including a custody battle over Christmas. They are out to directors and cast already. Higher Ground is producing.

The Obamas’ Higher Ground began with an exclusive deal at Netflix that harvested the Oscar winner American Factory, Crip Camp, Leave the World Behind and the Kevin Hart-starrer Fatherhood. Higher Ground also produced the Netflix series The Later Daters.

They signed on earlier this year for an extension of their creative partnership with Netflix, but the deal is now a non-exclusive first look.

Before production had begun on the anticipated film adaptation of Enid Blyton‘s The Magic Faraway Tree, director Ben Gregor worried that he’d put one of his stars, Andrew Garfield, off a little bit.

“We wrote a song for the film and we sent it to Andrew early on,” Gregor explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “And I hadn’t worked with him yet and you don’t know… With actors sometimes, you can put them off.”

The British-Nigerian actress most recently starred in the Lyric Hammersmith theater production of “Wedding Band,” directed by Monique Touko, which earned her a Stage Debut Award nomination for her performance. Set in the deep south of the U.S. in 1918 when interracial marriage was illegal, Julia (Ayorinde), a black seamstress, and Herman, a white baker, defy all odds with their secret love.

Netflix unveiled the first big data dump of 2024 on Thursday, and the engagement report for everything watched in the first half of the year proved that subscribers really love three things: Millie Bobby Brown, sharks and animated movies.

Some of the data points were unsurprising – we knew Brown’s “Damsel” was a huge hit, and indeed it was the most-watched film for the first half of the year. Exclusive: Higher Ground, the production company of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, has appointed Anikah McLaren to serve as Head of Film, Deadline can exclusively reveal.

McLaren joins from the recently shuttered Participant, where she spent a little over five years as Executive Vice President of Narrative Film, co-running the department as a key member of the leadership team. In her new role, she will lead Higher Ground’s scripted film division, reporting to President Vinnie Malhotra.

McLaren joins a team that also includes Jessie Dicovitsky, who is Head of Television, and Ethan Lewis, who oversees Higher Ground’s unscripted and non-fiction content. She’ll be based out of Los Angeles and will have VP of Film Mark Wright reporting to her.

Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

Anthony Carrigan, fresh off an Emmy nomination for his standout work in HBO’s Barry, has been cast as classic DC character Metamorpho, aka archeologist-turned-hero Rex Mason. He joins the feature that will formally launch DC’s new universe under filmmaker Gunn and his DC Studios co-boss Peter Safran.

Joel Kinnaman (For All Mankind) is attached to star in They Found Us, an alien abduction thriller to be directed for AGC Studios and Temple Hill by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (District 9), which will head into production in Australia later this year.

The film to be fully financed by Stuart Ford’s fast-growing independent content studio, AGC Studios, is based on an original screenplay by Jeremy Slater, whose credits include Moon Knight, Fantastic Four, The Exorcist, The Lazarus Effect and The Umbrella Academy. It will follow a father (Kinnaman) and his daughter Kaylee as they undertake a camping trip in the Utah wilderness to heal their broken relationship. After being attacked by a hostile extraterrestrial lifeform, their lives — not just their relationship — wind up at stake, as they fight with a humanoid beast to stop their abduction to an unknown and terrifying alien world.

Paramount Pictures has renewed its multi-year, first-look film deal with Temple Hill Entertainment, the producer of their smash fall horror hit Smile which grossed over $200M WW and netted a $101M profit for the Melrose Ave. lot.

Under the terms of the agreement, Temple Hill Entertainment will continue to develop films for both Paramount Pictures and its label Paramount Players. On the television side, Temple Hill remains under a first-look deal with Lionsgate.

Paramount Pictures has renewed its multiyear first-look film deal with Temple Hill Entertainment, the studio announced on Monday.

Under the terms of the agreement, Temple Hill Entertainment will continue to develop films for the studio and its label Paramount Players. On the television side, Temple Hill remains under a first-look deal with Lionsgate.

The first-look film deal renewal comes on the heels of the critically acclaimed horror thriller “Smile,” from Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill, which earned more than $200 million at the global box office.

Prime Video has released the official full-length trailer for the movie ‘Die Hart,’ premiering exclusively on Prime Video on 24 February.

The satirical action comedy follows Kevin Hart in his pursuit of a life-changing role.

Kevin Hart plays a fictionalised version of himself, as he sets out to pivot from being pigeonholed as a comedy wingman to being taken seriously as an action movie star. Hart attends “action hero school” run by Ron Wilcox, played by John Travolta, where he attempts to learn the ropes on how to become one of the industry’s most coveted action stars.

A new trailer for Die Hart features John Travolta schooling comedian Kevin Hart on how to be an action hero. Originally released on the failed streaming service Quibi as a ten-part series, Die Hart is now coming to Prime Video as a feature film. The upcoming comedy is the latest in a long line of comedies from Hart, including Me Time, The Man From Toronto, True Story, Fatherhood, and Coach Kev.

Now, Prime Video has shared a new trailer for Die Hart, showing off a better look at the upcoming film and the hilarious meta-comedy of Hart, playing a fictionalized version of himself, attempting to become an action hero.

Ben Stiller is setting an acting return with Three Identical Strangers, a high-profile limited series package that just hit the premium/streaming marketplace.

Stiller is in final negotiations to headline and executive produce the series, a multi-decade family drama inspired by the incredible true story of identical triplet brothers separated at birth. The project hails from Party of Five co-creator Amy Lippman, Sony Pictures Television and its TriStar Television division as well as Sk Global Entertainment.

Evan Rachel Wood, Josh Gad and Anthony Carrigan will star in “The Adults,” a new crime drama from Alex Winter.

“The Adults” follows a sister and brother, Megan and Nathan (Wood and Gad), whose lives are completely upended when they discover a dead body, long buried in their parent’s basement. That revelation sends them on an odyssey of crime and murder.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Evan, Josh and Anthony on this darkly comic crime drama, which takes a sly look at the challenges we all face today, trying to survive in the modern world,” Winter said.

CAA Media Finance, which is arranging financing for the film, will represent the domestic sale, while Rocket Science will launch international sales at the upcoming European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

The film is being produced by Winter, Scott Kroopf of Many Rivers Productions, and Russell Hollander. It is executive produced by Connie Tavel.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin seek murderous revenge in the first official trailer for the upcoming comedy film, Moving On.
