Public Enemy’s recent, guest-star-laden What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down? is, undoubtedly, the greatest album ever made by a hip-hop group 35 years deep into its career – in that it’s almost certainly the only album in that category thus far. That distinction aside, it’s genuinely excellent in its own right, with Flavor Flav – whose status in the group seemed unclear for the while – fully in the mix, and an energized Chuck D leading the way.

If there’s one weekend at the box office that studios and exhibitors typically have had no thanks for, it’s the post Thanksgiving period, typically the first weekend in December, when business drops by as much as 50%.
Last year the Black Friday weekend went from $180.9M led by Frozen 2 to $90.3M during the first frame of December, and let me tell ya somethin’, studios and exhibition are hungering for those types of tickets sales right now.
Universal remains the only major studio pumping out wide releases to those remaining movie theaters which aren’t being smashed down by lockdowns (like in California — God knows when we’ll be able to go to the movies again).
This weekend, Universal’s DreamWorks Animated title The Croods: A New Age in weekend 2 continued to see the best numbers in the current Covid-19 America, with $4.4M, -55%, crossing $20.3M in its 12th day in release.

Public Enemy have dropped a new video for “Public Enemy Number Won.” The animated clip features Beastie Boys’ Mike D and Ad-Rock as well as Run-dmc. The track appears on Public Enemy’s 15th studio album, What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?, which dropped in September.
The album marks Public Enemy’s return to Def Jam Recordings, which is given a shout-out on the lyrics and the label’s logo is featured in the clip. The visual also features archival posters, photos and footage as backdrops to...

To be totally honest, it was with mixed feelings that I leapt into Pandora Season 2 Episode 1
Don't get me wrong. Pandora Season 1 was a wild ride, and I couldn't resist seeing it through to the end despite some of its more frustrating features.
What kept me hanging on (when I've cut loose shows for much lesser sins in terms of continuity and logic) was the sense that Jax's story was worth the wait.
What can I say? Hope springs eternal.
This premiere hints at a more focused and centralized season to come.
Season 1 had us looking in a lot of different directions and at a lot of different plotlines -- from Atria's clone rebellion on Adar to Thomas's daddy issues to Ralen's wife (what now?) -- and that made for an often confusing jumble of different political conflicts.

Each month, the editors and critics at Rolling Stone compile a list of our favorite new albums. Our picks for September include the final LP from late reggae legend Toots Hibbert, a synth-pop stunner from Sad13, protest songs from Neil Young, and reissues of albums by Prince, the Rolling Stones, and Lou Reed.

The Criterion Channel’s stellar offerings are continuing next month with a selection of new releases, retrospective, series, and more. Leading the pack is, of course, a horror lineup perfectly timed for Halloween, featuring ’70s classics and underseen gems, including Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer (pictured above), Tobe Hopper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early films by David Cronenberg, Wes Craven, and Brian De Palma, Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess, and more.
Also of note is a New Korean Cinema retrospective, featuring a new introduction by critic Grady Hendrix and a conversation between directors Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook, whose Barking Dogs Never Bite, The Host, Mother, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are part of the lineup, as well as Lee Myung-se’s Nowhere to Hide, and more titles to be announced. Bong’s short Influenza will also arrive, paired with Michael Haneke’s Caché.

A trend for horror anthologies is emerging from the competing titles in this year’s Sitges Pitchbox event, as organizers Filmmarket Hub and the Sitges Film Festival announce this year’s line up.
And, as the movie project showcase opens up its doors to series for the first time, it’s buzzy titles such as “R.I.P “ and “Mr Ray” which appear to be embracing the anthology format.
Developed during a 2019 Manhattan Institute Film Workshop “Mr Ray” is created by Antoine Bours – a series creator on Belgian-French scripted crime series “Ennemi Public” (“Public Enemy”).
Pitching itself as “Penny Dreadful” meets Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,” the series is described as “a love letter to the anthology series” and a tribute to one of its pioneers, the early twentieth century Belgian horror writer Jean Ray.

Belgian public television starts filming on Baraki, its first 26’ format series, Coyotes and Pandore, as post-production on Unseen is wrapping up. The Rtbf and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation continue their joint program of TV series production, hoping to find successors to La Trêve, Unité 42 or Ennemi Public. The Covid-19 crisis has interrupted the filming of Unseen only a few days before wrapping (the last takes were finally shot in June and the show should be broadcast some time in Autumn), and has delayed that of Pandore. But this Summer saw the return to film sets in order to guarantee new content to broadcast in 2021. The first production to get started is Baraki, a series by Julien Vargas, Peter Ninane and Fred de Loof, which follows the trials and tribulations of a working-class family. It will be...
The following contains spoilers for Perry Mason season 1.
Perry Mason ended its introductory season with a hung jury for the accused, and never got the chance to put the main culprit on the stand. And, boy did defense attorney Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) want that. He fantasized about the confrontation, roleplaying it in front of an audience of legal authorities who all disagreed with his opinion. Mason wasn’t only robbed of a pure victory in the case, his true prey was stolen.
Detective Ennis was sentenced to death by his own partner, and with him went one of the most interesting characters on the series. This guy could have evolved into one of the great HBO villains, a bad cop who kept getting worse. The ends only justified the means but he wasn’t born mean. Andrew Howard brought more than moral ambiguity to the role. He captured the...

There’s so little that we know for sure about Spider-Man 3 at this stage, other than what we can infer from the end of Far From Home, which saw Peter Parker publicly exposed as the wall-crawler as well as accused of murder. One thing we’re pretty confident about, though, is that the threequel will continue the naming convention started by Homecoming of having the word “Home” somewhere in the title.
Various titles have been suggested by fans, including Home Run and Home Invasion, but maybe the title has actually already been subtly revealed and we all missed it. Murphy’s Multiverse has pointed out that both Esquire and Maxim have Spidey 3 listed as Spider-Man: Homesick on their sites’ respective upcoming comic book movie pages. Furthermore, the outlet’s Charles Murphy writes that he’s done some digging around and may have discovered where they got word of this title from.

Nick Cannon’s daytime talk show, which was scheduled to premiere later this year, has been pushed to 2021 in the aftermath of anti-Semitic comments he made on a podcast.
The show’s producer, Lionsgate-owned Debmar-Mercury, confirmed the news in a statement obtained by Variety, saying that it is “standing by” Cannon given that his “public comments don’t reflect his true feelings.” The decision mirrors that taken by Fox, which also backed the beleaguered host by keeping him on as the Mc of “The Masked Singer.”
“The ‘Nick Cannon’ talk show will not debut this year,” the Debmar-Mercury statement read. “After conversations with Nick, we do believe that his public comments don’t reflect his true feelings and his apology is heartfelt and sincere. We want to continue the healing process as he meets with leaders of the Jewish community and engages in a dialogue with our distribution partners to hear their views.

Nick Cannon has announced that he will be “taking time away” from his Los Angeles-based radio show, after apologizing for anti-Semitic comments he made on a podcast.

Nick Cannon will continue in his role as host of Fox’s The Masked Singer, one of the most high-profile hosting jobs in broadcast TV, after he issued a lengthy apology over controversial comments he had made recently on his podcast, saying that he feels “ashamed of the uninformed and naïve place that these words came from.”

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

The saying “Man makes plans, God laughs” has been around for a long time, even popping up in a truncated form on a Public Enemy album.
That statement may apply to the sports world this week, as it struggles to get back on its feet after a long layoff caused by the pandemic. This week, more obstacles toward that revival emerged, as everything from baseball to tennis to golf to wrestling grappled with coronavirus issues.
While infected personnel are the main concern, there are other problems. Today, the New York Yankees and New York Mets issued a statement saying they will work with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to impose a 14-day quarantine on travelers from virus hotspots like Florida, where both teams normally train. They announced last week that they were shifting spring training to New York City, where cases have slowed.

Spider-Man 3 might’ve been delayed by the pandemic, but it’s still on the way. Production was due to start next month, but obviously that’s had to be held off, which has had a knock-on effect on the movie’s release date. However, rest assured, the threequel remains a priority for Sony so we won’t be waiting forever to find out what happens next to Peter Parker after the shocking cliffhanger of Far From Home.
But enough about Peter for the moment, what about his aunt May? May must be in for a tough time of it as well, seeing as her nephew’s been both outed as Spider-Man and framed by Mysterio as Public Enemy No. 1. ScreenRant caught up with Marisa Tomei and asked what’s next for May and though the actress wouldn’t say much, she teased that we’ll see more of May...

More than a dozen actors have tackled the role of infamous Prohibition-era gangster Al Capone, from Neville Brand in The Untouchables TV show (1959-1963) to Robert De Niro in the 1987 movie version of the series. But no one has ever played the Chicago mob boss, a.k.a. Scarface and Public Enemy No. 1, with quite the implosive power of Tom Hardy in Capone (on video on demand starting May 12th). What makes the Oscar-nominated British actor’s take particularly daring is the fact that the plays Capone only in the final year of his life.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has been locked in a perpetual legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard (Aquaman) ever since their 2017 divorce where both sides claimed abuse from the other. Though most of the evidence revealed thus far has indicated that Heard was the primary abuser in the couple’s tumultuous marriage, it hasn’t stopped her from fighting vigilantly to bury Depp’s career. And as things ramp up, reports now say that Heard hired private investigator Paul Barresi to dig up dirt on Depp.
Barresi went to pretty extensive lengths to uncover information on Depp, too, tracing back his business dealings to when he co-owned popular a nightclub called The Viper Room in the 1990s. Yet after speaking to over 100 people that worked with the actor over the past 30 or so years, he found that not even one of them had anything bad to say.

Rock star turned horror film auteur Rob Zombie this month releases “3 From Hell,” the third in a trilogy that started with 2003’s “House of 1,000 Corpses” and continued with 2005’s “The Devil’s Rejects.”
I’ve appeared in several Zombie films over the years, including playing the warden in “3 From Hell” — which continues the story of the murderous backwoods Firefly family.
And I sat down with Zombie to talk about his work and what has influenced him.
As a kid, what kind of films did you like? Was it always horror?
It was everything. I was media obsessed. I would collect TV Guide for decades and sometimes I’ll go back and look at them. I would first grab the TV Guide, I’d circle everything I was going to watch for the week, which was basically everything. But back then, when you look at it there were so few channels.

In 1989, Public Enemy broke up — just after recording their signature song, “Fight the Power,” and just before it became the musical centerpiece of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” The reason for their breakup, and the story of their reunion, is the subject of our latest episode “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to below or listen to right here.
Our special guest this week is Dart Adams of the “Dart Against Humanity” podcast, and the author of the Okayplayer story “In the Summer of 1989 ‘Fight the Power’ Saved Public Enemy & Almost Sank ‘Do the Right Thing.'”
We think his story could provide the basis for a different kind of hip-hop movie than we’ve ever seen before — one about how hip-hop’s most uncompromising group had to decide how to handle a crisis that threatened not only their future, but the success of “Do the Right Thing.

On June 19th, 1991, Bushwick Bill was pronounced dead. He shot himself in the eye that day, after suicidal ideations and a prolonged argument with his girlfriend. The rapper, born Richard Stephen Shaw, was only 24 at the time, but he had already lived multiple lives.
Less than three hours after his “death,” he awoke in the morgue. According to Bill, he had a toe tag and was being prepared for an autopsy. In his own words, he hopped up, pulled out a catheter, urinated in a cup, and sent the patrolling officer and hospital tech running.

The 18th annual Tribeca Film Festival opened with Roger Ross Williams’ documentary “The Apollo” at the iconic uptown venue which performers and Harlem community members call “home.”
“You can feel the history, the echo of the entertainers,” Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro said in a speech before the film. “In this administration, during these disturbing times of promoting racism, tonight, we reject it. No you don’t, not here, not on this stage.”
In “The Apollo” documentary, an HBO production, Williams chronicles the venue’s 85-year-history, moving between historic and present-day footage to show how far the country has come in terms of celebrating diversity, while reminding viewers how far America still has to go. In the past, The Apollo was the only venue in New York City to allow black performers. That’s no longer the case, of course, but Williams’ film argues that times are still hard.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was a bit late to the game when it came to including hip-hop in its ranks. But since 2007, when Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five became the first rap group inducted into the hall, the powers that be have been slowly welcoming the genre with the induction of Run-dmc, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, N.W.A and, most recently, Tupac Shakur in 2017.

At the end of 2018, Def Jam had around two dozen fresh faces on its roster — from artists with burgeoning loyalty clubs to brash 17-year-olds newly plucked from SoundCloud...
