The Shadow’s Edge Looks Like Police Story 4 But Jackie Chan Is Not Trying to Make You Laugh in His Next Movie
Image
You know it’s going to be a good movie when Jackie Chan is in it. You’ll know it’s going to be an awesome movie when Jackie Chan is portraying a very serious role with no laughs and no gimmicks.

That’s what his upcoming movie The Shadow’s Edge looks like. With a look and feel of Police Story 4 (originally titled Police Story: First Strike), Chan’s upcoming movie has him donning a mask of seriousness as the stakes are as high as they can get, and there are no second chances in this one.

Jackie Chan’s The Shadow’s Edge looks fabulous

Throughout his Hollywood and Chinese filmography, Jackie Chan has always set out to make the people laugh. Through his stunts, dialogue, and even awkward moments in his films, Chan’s films would often comprise fighting and laughing blended together.

Inside the Secret Life of Jackie Chan’s Father Charlie Chan
Image
You think you know Jackie Chan‘s story, right? The martial arts legend who brought kung fu comedy to Hollywood, the guy who does his own stunts and makes us laugh while kicking butt. But here’s the thing – behind all those action-packed movies lies a family history so wild it makes his films look tame.

We’re talking espionage, wartime secrets, and family drama that stayed buried for decades. Jackie didn’t even learn the truth about his father’s double life until he was in his forties, and when he did, it completely flipped everything he thought he knew about his family upside down.

Jackie Chan Dislocated His Shoulder (& Popped It Back In) During One Karate Kid: Legends Fight Scene
Image
Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle reveals that Jackie Chan dislocated his shoulder during a fight sequence, only to then pop it back in himself. Serving as the sixth movie in the Karate Kid franchise, the martial arts film chronicles the journey of kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang), who becomes a student of Mr. Han (Chan) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) after finding himself on a collision course with a local karate champion. Chan's role in the Karate Kid: Legends cast marks his second outing as Mr. Han after 2010's The Karate Kid.

During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Entwistle recalls filming the Mr. Han kitchen fight in Karate Kid: Legends, revealing that the action in the sequence caused Chan to dislocate his shoulder. The 71-year-old actor didn't miss a beat, however, popping his shoulder back into place and promptly getting back to filming. Check out Entwistle's recollection...

We May Not Get Rush Hour 4 But Jackie Chan is Already Working on a Script For a Shanghai Knights Sequel With Owen Wilson
Image
Iconic films seem to have followed Jackie Chan throughout his entire career. Being a part of several memorable films, some of which turned into whole series, he has known true success in his lengthy career. Despite being seventy-one years old now, he has most recently starred in the revival of his 2010 classic, Karate Kid.

Although Karate Kid: Legends isn’t getting the best of reviews, it does open up a bigger conversation about making sequels to Chan’s classics. On top of this action film, he has also been a part of other memorable projects like Drunken Master, Rush Hour, and the Shanghai Knights films.

Recently, Chan gave an interview, and he seems to have very optimistic news for the last two projects.

Jackie Chan at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
Action icon Jackie Chan is hitting screens this weekend with Ralph Macchio in the new legacy sequel Karate Kid: Legends. While doing press for the film, Chan was recently asked if he could rank his popular Rush Hour movies. Chan’s ranking was a bit unorthodox as he said, “I don’t know. You know what, the first one: little money, little time. We shot it like, ‘Go, go, go, go!’ The second one: a lot of money, a lot of time. The third one: too much money, too much time. Too much money is no good.” While Chan gave the impression that he doesn’t think too much of Rush Hour 3, he is still very excited to make another sequel with his long-time friend, Chris Tucker.

Chan spoke with ScreenRant while promoting Karate Kid: Legends and the star was asked about the status of Rush Hour 4. He responded,...

Jackie Chan Hasn’t Given Up on ‘Rush Hour 4’ Yet but He Has a Condition That Can’t Be Fixed

Despite appearing less and less in movies throughout the years, Jackie Chan has still not given up on some of the classic franchises that he had been a part of all those years ago.

Movies like Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon became some of the most significant action-comedy movies of the early 2000s (and late 1990s), but after a while, the production of the franchises stopped. Although the world has changed quite a lot since the first Rush Hour was released, iconic star Jackie Chan is still optimistic about Rush Hour 4!

Buddy cop comedy Rush Hour, starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, was extremely popular when it hit screens in 1998. After spawning two sequels with varying levels of success, reports of a fourth film have been swirling for years.

Chan recently offered a promising update about Rush Hour 4, while promoting Karate Kid: Legends. The actor shared his excitement about reprising his role as Chief Inspector Lee during a red carpet chat with Screen Rant. "The script is still going on. I want to do a Rush Hour 4," the martial arts expert said. "And I want to do [another] Shanghai Knights, Shanghai Dawn."

However, Chan was unable to offer any specifics about the production timeline or when fans could expect to see the film. "I don't know. For a franchise titled Rush Hour, developments on a fourth entry in the series are ironically taking a long time. Rush Hour 4 has been in rumored development for so long, that even its star, Jackie Chan, is getting impatient. Shanghai Noon Writer Reveals the Disappointing Reason Why a Third Movie Never Happened
Image
Writing duo Alfred Gough and Miles Millar may now be known for the likes of the hit Netflix series Wednesday and the long-awaited horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but the pair once crafted a masterful blend of Western and action in 2000s Shanghai Noon. Starring martial arts icon Jackie Chan and Wedding Crashers star Owen Wilson, the movie expertly combines thrilling action, comedy, martial arts, and cowboys, with a sequel, Shanghai Knights, released in 2003. Sadly, despite the popularity of the Shanghai movies, a third movie never materialized, and Gough has now revealed why. It was Jackie Chans fault.

We came very close. Oh my gosh, Covid always makes my timeline wonky. I think it was like 2017, 2018, we had a script and Jackie [Chan] and Owen [Wilson] had verbally kind of committed. Then, at a certain point, Jackie just decided he didn't want to do it. That's all I really know. There was...

'We Came Very Close': Shanghai Noon Writer Reveals What Killed the Planned Third Film
Promo One Sheet
The martial arts western action comedy Shanghai Noon was a massive hit when it was released in 2000. While the film, starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, received a sequel, a third film in the franchise never got off the ground.

Speaking to Collider, Alfred Gough, who wrote the film with Miles Millar, revealed the current status of Shanghai Dawn. "We came very close. I think it was like 2017, 2018, we had a script and Jackie and Owen had verbally kind of committed," he explained. "Then, at a certain point, Jackie just decided he didn't want to do it. That's all I really know. There was a moment probably six or seven years ago where it looked like it was starting to come together. We weren't writing it, we were working with some younger writers, but we helped break the story, and they were writing it. So, that's where we are."

What Happened To Shanghai Noon 3
Image
Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are a hilarious buddy comedy duo in the Shanghai Noon movies, but franchise's intended third installment, Shanghai Dawn, has never gotten off the ground. Shanghai Noon debuted in 2000, with Jackie Chan's Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang venturing to America to rescue the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei. He also crosses paths with outlaw Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson), who joins forces with him on his mission.

Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon reunited for another wacky adventure in 2003's Shanghai Knights, traveling from the Old West to Victorian England with Chon's sister Chon Lin (Fann Wong). Shanghai Dawn was also announced and discussed at various points since the release of Shanghai Knights. However, despite Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights being highlights of Jackie Chan's Hollywood career, Shanghai Dawn has sadly yet to be realized.

Jackie Chan joins Joe Carnahan's Five Against A Bullet
Joseph Baxter Dec 7, 2016

Joe Carnahan’s ensemble action movie Five Against a Bullet nabs Jackie Chan as its first star.

It appears that Joe Carnahan’s next film is about rev its engines. While the helmer of Narc, Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team and The Grey hasn't been helming a new film this past year or two (he's instead been working on the writing and development of many others), he did sign up to direct and re-write an action ensemble piece called Five Against A Bullet back in 2014. Now, the reinvigorated project has procured one of its lead actors in an international superstar.

5 Fun, Action-Packed Westerns To See Before The Magnificent Seven
Gotta love a good old-fashioned Western. It’s a genre that’s been an American staple for decades. The image of the lone gunslinger is one that’s inspired countless novels, films, comics, and TV shows — and it’s one that’s bound to continue to do so for countless years. Though while as kids the genre may have been synonymous with fun adventure, the reality is that the majority of these flicks are slow, meditative character studies.

That’s all well and good, but I’m gonna chuck every one of those movies out the window today. You won’t find me talking about The Assassination of Jesse James, Once Upon A Time In The West, or The Unforgiven here. Granted, I acknowledge the quality of those films, but today, I wanted to highlight a handful of flicks that may be more in line with what we’ll be...

Shanghai Noon Threequel Lands Napoleon Dynamite Director, Jared Hess
In 2000, we saw martial arts legend Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson team up in the old west homage Shanghai Noon, a film that gave a lighthearted update to the Western genre and remixed it with a Jackie Chan action flick. The result was pretty great stuff. As a fan of the Western genre, I found a lot to love in some of the nods they made to Spaghetti Western classics (such as the character Nathan Van Cleef), and it's difficult to go wrong with a Jackie Chan action scene. What's more, I thought Chan and Wilson had great chemistry.

A few years later, in 2003, we saw a sequel in Shanghai Knights, which took Chan and Wilson across the sea to Great Britain, where they fought against the power-hungry swordmaster Littlefinger -- I mean, Lord Rathbone. The movie itself, to me, was a step down from the original. No longer did...

Napoleon Dynamite Helmer Jared Hess Saddles Up For Shanghai Noon Sequel
Soon after the one-two punch of Shanghai Noon and middling sequel Shanghai Knights in 2000 and 2003, respectively, talk of a third entry into MGM’s cult action series faded and faded fast – that is, until now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is firmly committed to getting the long-in-development threequel back on track, courting both Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson to saddle up for another crowd-pleasing blend of Western and kung fu action. It’s still early days, of course, but we now understand Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jared Hess has agreed to terms to direct the Shanghai Noon sequel, which is currently tethered with the title Shanghai Dawn over at MGM.

Hess knows a thing or two about prolonged production cycles, too, after guiding Masterminds to the finish line, only to have the crime caper delayed by a full year as a result of Relativity’s financial woes. As for Shanghai Dawn,...

If you aren’t familiar, the “Shanghai” films are a modern, buddy-pic combo plate of Western meets Kung-Fu movie; in the first, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan), an Imperial guard, trails the captors of a Chinese princess to Nevada with the intention to save her, there meeting his cowboy outlaw partner Roy O’Bannon, (Owen Wilson) who helps him do just that. In the second installment, 2003’s “Shanghai Knights,” the duo bring their shenanigans to London to seek revenge for the murder of Chon’s estranged father.

Shanghai Noon 3 Moves Forward with Napoleon Dynamite Director
Jackie Chan at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
Way back in May of 2015, it was heavily rumored that Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson were ready to reunite for Shanghai Dawn, the third chapter in their Shanghai Noon trilogy, following the original in 2000 and Shanghai Knights in 2003. Now, it's being reported that the long awaited sequel is finally moving forward. Both actors will return to their roles as Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon.

Shanghai Dawn Secures Napoleon Dynamite Director; Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson in Talks to Return
Over a year ago, we wrote about the possibility of a sequel to Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights called Shanghai Dawn, which would bring back stars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson more than a decade after the last movie in this series came out. We hadn't heard much else about the project in the meantime, but THR has just announced that Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, has been hired to direct it for MGM.

Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the Smallville scribes who also wrote the screenplays for the first two movies in this franchise, came up with the story for this sequel, and Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum handled the actual writing duties. The plot details for this upcoming installment are unknown at this time, but if Chan and Wilson end up signing on (they're currently in negotiations to return), it'll involve the continuing...
