Awards season comes to a glitzy end tonight with Sunday's broadcast of the Academy Awards.

First of all, I'm very happy that my favorite film of the year, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," wins big at the 88th Academy Awards! I was losing hope after "The Big Short" won the Producers Guild Award and "The Revenant" zoomed onto the frontrunner status!

But no. At the night of the Oscars, "Spotlight" won two major awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay!

Kudos to McCarthy and team!

My heart felt "Spotlight" would win but my mind said "The Revenant." See? The heart always wins!

Now, onto the show itself. I thought Chris Rock did a good job in softening the #OscarsSoWhite controversy! But the show itself? A bit of a bore. It felt long! Not quite the 4 hours and 23 minutes of the 74th Oscars but long nonetheless.

And really? Only Sam Smith, The Weeknd, and Lady Gaga were invited to perform the Best Original Song nominees? What...

Not-so-bold prediction: "Spotlight" will win Best Picture at the Oscars this Sunday. Maybe. Maybe not. The story of the Boston Globe reporters who exposed widespread child abuse by Catholic priests is a frontrunner to win the top honor. Whether it does win or not, it's out on Blu-ray and DVD on February 23. The discs include "Uncovering the Truth: A Spotlight Team Roundtable," with the real-life Spotlight team reuniting 14 years later for a roundtable discussion about the challenges they faced, and how the shocking story continues to impact the world. What if dinosaurs never became extinct and lived at the same time as humans?...

1. "World of Tomorrow": Frontrunner Don Hertzfeldt offers a sublime sci-fi parable of little Emily learning some unnerving secrets when she travels 227 years into the future with a mysterious doppleganger. Inspired by his graphic novel, "The End of Tomorrow," Hertzfeldt's iconic stick figures glide through a glimpse of fantastical, if spiritually empty, things to come. Interestingly, he drew on his own personal connections for the voice acting, collaborating with his niece and a friend, animator/illustrator Julia Pott. In fact, the experience was totally improvisational for his niece, and she drove the narrative with lids of eggs being purple or the name of a cat she came across being used for the monster or her idea for the end of the memory-removal process being a rainbow. 2. "Sanjay's Super Team":  This marks Pixar's first semi-autobiographical short, with board artist Sanjay Patel ("The Incredibles") coming to terms with his Hindu...

Award season moved into the homestretch on Thursday with the announcement of the 88th annual Academy Award nominations. Sylvester Stallone proved to be the season's big comeback story, earning a Best Supporting Actor nod for his beloved turn in Creed, alongside heavy favorites Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet and Alicia Vikander. The Oscars - to be presented Feb. 28 - honor the year's top films in 24 categories. We've ironed our dressing gowns, polished our slippers and hosed down the kitchen in preparation for a particularly posh time in the movie year: yes, it's Oscar season.

Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee were the director pairing for this year's Oscar nominations, which saw The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road leading the pack.

It's great to see Anomalisa, Sean The Sheep and When Marnie Was There among the nominees for best animated feature, and it's equally heartening to see the superb indie film Ex Machina up against expensive movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road in the best visual effects category. 

While we wouldn't argue against any of the great performances in the Best Actress section, we'd have liked...

After many months of speculation, the full list of this year's Oscar nominees have been announced - just minutes after the reveal of the death of beloved thespian Alan Rickman.

"The Revenant" led the field with twelve nominations followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten and "The Martian" with seven. Next were "Spotlight" and "Carol" with six nominations; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Big Short" and "Bridge Of Spies" got five; "Room" and "The Danish Girl" nabbed four; "Sicario," "Brooklyn" and "The Hateful Eight" scored three; and "Steve Jobs" and "Ex Machina" nabbed two.

Surprises? "Creed" and "Joy" scored only one nomination each for Stallone's and Lawrence's performances respectively. No Ridley Scott for director, Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin for screenplay, Charlize Theron for best actress, "Carol" for best picture, "See You Again" for best song, and of course - the distinct lack of racial diversity. Working within the framework of family movies with budgets that run into the hundreds of millions, Pixar's animators manage to find room for the personal and the intimate. Indeed, mining the past for affecting, human experiences is at the heart of the studio's writing process, as The Good Dinosaur's story supervisor Kelsey Mann explained to us in September.

Members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have picked 10 animated short films to advance in the voting process for the 88th Academy Awards. They viewed all 60 eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco in December. If both Pixar's "Inside Out" and "The Good Dinosaur" land Oscar nominations in the feature category, and "Sanjay's Super Team" is included in the final five for animated shorts, that will mark three Pixar nominations in one year.   From the mind of acclaimed graphic novelist Sanjay Patel comes Disney/Pixar's latest short film Sanjay's Super Team, which follows the story of a young Indian-American boy and his father. The seven-minute short, which premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France earlier this year, starts with young Sanjay eating cereal and watching cartoons until his father rings a bell and calls him over to join him in meditation.  When they begin, the significance of the prayer is lost on young Sanjay, who quickly begins to daydream about a kind of ancient, Hindu version of Marvel's The Avengers, with the Hindu Gods appearing in the guise of superheroes. Disney-Pixar recently released the teaser for the upcoming Sanjay's Super Team. The animated short—the first from the studio that features an Indian-American family as the main characters—focuses on a young boy who would rather spend his day watching superheroes on TV than partake in his dad's religious meditation. When Pixar fans head to theaters to watch The Good Dinosaur next month, they will also be treated to the new animated short Sanjay's Super Team. Back in April, we showed you the first look photo from the short, and today we have the first clip, featuring a young Indian boy named Sanjay who is engrossed in a superhero cartoon dubbed Super Team, while his father meditates. A playful battle emerges when Sanjay's father rings a bell, asking the young lad to join him in meditation, but Sanjay has other plans.

The animated short marks the directorial debut of Sanjay Patel, who has worked as an animator and story artist for Pixar since 1998's A Bug's Life. The Sanjay's Super Team plot is loosely based on his own upbringing in San Bernadino, California, where young Sanjay idolized animated superhero shows such as SuperFriends, which served as the inspiration for the fictional SuperTeam.

Pixar may still be riding high on the Stateside success of Inside Out, but let's not forget that there's more coming from the studio before the end of 2015.

The studio has offered a first look at its new short film Sanjay's Super Team, which will precede The Good Dinosaur in cinemas later this year.

The short is the brainchild of the studio's artist Sanjay Patel, who looked back on his own childhood to tell a story that brings together religion and superheroes.

Young Sanjay is more interested in superheroes than he is with his father's religious beliefs, but before long he finds himself imagining the Hindu Gods as a team of heroes fighting evil, which brings him closer to understanding his father's outlook on the world.

Producer Nicole Paradis Grindle said: "Patel's animation very clearly comes from a different cultural place than all the other stories we've told before.
