Paramount will lean into the comedy genre with its upcoming slate of titles, presented yesterday (June 18) at CineEurope.

On panel sessions at the trade convention, cinema operators have been calling for more-rounded film slates, and decrying the lack of adult-skewing comedies that in the past have been supplied by the likes of The Hangover, Ted, Judd Apatow productions and Adam Sandler vehicles.

Miramax announced Wednesday that Alexandra Loewy will serve as the studio’s new President of Film. She will officially assume the position on May 27.

The Los Angeles-based Loewy will work directly with Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman. Prior to her Miramax appointment, Loewy most recently worked for six years as the President of Working Title films, where she managed the studio’s Los Angeles office and executive produced films like “The Substance,” “The High Note” and the Richard Curtis-penned Peacock comedy “Genie.”

Loewy’s appointment comes just a few months after Miramax named former Village Roadshow exec Alix Jaffe its Television President in March.

Before her tenure at Working Title, Loewy served as the Senior Vice President of Production & Development at di Bonaventura Pictures, where she nabbed a credit as a co-producer of the Jason Statham-led hit “The Meg.” She has also held roles at Global Produce, Red Wagon and Unique Features.

Kirsten Dunst is set to star Flora Birnbaum’s debut feature “Self Help,” which is being produced by Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell at Gloria Sanchez Prods., whose credits include “Booksmart,” “May December” and “Will & Harper.”

Dunst will star as Sage, who is lost in Los Angeles and in life when she witnesses a hit-and-run and gets sucked into a far-reaching conspiracy. “This turns out to be a few notches above her — non-existent — pay grade. L.A. is in flames, tensions mount and bodies pile up as she plays detective and finds herself caught between a shady real estate tycoon and a dubious wannabe actor,” according to press materials.

Focus Features has locked in a release date for Anemone, its film bringing three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis back to the big screen for the first time since Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread in 2017.

Marking the directorial debut of the actor’s son, Ronan Day-Lewis, the film is said to explore the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons. It’s slated to open in limited release on October 3rd before expanding on October 10th.

Ronan Day-Lewis directed from a script written with Daniel Day-Lewis, with Brad Pitt’s Plan B producing. The cast also includes Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton.

The film will be produced by Barry Jenkins’ Pastel, along with Imperative Entertainment, Af Films, and Black Bear, who is providing financing. Landes Echavarría will also produce under his A Stela Cine banner.

It wouldn’t be “Scary Movie” without the Wayans brothers.

When Jonathan Glickman took over as head of Miramax a year ago, the studio was struggling to reboot the franchise. Glickman knew that a successful relaunch required one essential ingredient — the involvement of Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, the siblings who gave those popular comedies their subversive spark.

“You need to have some connective tissue with the original property,” Glickman says. “It gives legitimacy to a project so it doesn’t seem like just a cash grab.”

But getting the Wayanses wasn’t easy. The brothers believed that Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the bullying, bare-knuckle and (in the case of Harvey) disgraced founders of Miramax, had given them a “crappy” deal on the first film in the series, released in 2000, then “stole” their idea. By the time the third, fourth and fifth “Scary Movie” hit theaters, the Wayanses were no longer involved.

CinemaCon is an industry event held every April in Las Vegas for theater owners, designed to get them excited to want to book a given studio’s movie on their screens, but increasingly it’s become more akin to something like ComicCon. Fanboy bloggers attend to be the first to see footage from upcoming films, oftentimes months before anything is released to the public online. And we as journalists spend time describing the footage we saw, how the audience reacted, and what studio brass have to say about it all.

Now the movie theaters are doing our job for us. Channing Tatum believes his next film is going to be a very special one. The actor recently talked about his role in Roofman at this year's CinemaCon.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum appeared during Paramount Pictures' studio presentation at CinemaCon to talk about Roofman, which is set for release on Oct. 3. "I know everybody’s come and out and said they have something special to show you. They lied," Tatum said. "I am the one who has something special to show you. That movie is Roofman, it is a really, really special movie.

Roofman is a crime drama directed by Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines), and its story is a biopic of Jeffrey Manchester, a former U.S. Army Reserve officer and fugitive. Tatum went on to praise Cianfrance's work on the project. "He's crafted this movie that is an immensely entertaining ride, equal parts devastating, emotional and somehow hilarious.

The 44-year-old actor hit the stage for the presentation of his new movie Roofman on Thursday (April 3) held at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The upcoming movie is based “on the remarkable story of Jeffrey Manchester, an eccentric and charming serial robber who broke into more than 60 McDonald’s overnight via their roofs, then emptied the cash register in the morning after herding staff into freezers. The former U.S. Army Reserve officer became known as the ‘Rooftop Robber’ or ‘Roofman’ and was known for his gentle demeanor and for rarely resorting to violence,” according to Deadline.

Las Vegas – Paramount Pictures will soon be a very different company. Once the Skydance merger is completed, the current regime will likely depart. That made it an uncomfortable public appearance for current Paramount co-ceo Brian Robbins. Long associated with the company since his directing days, Robbins noted he was “Proud of what we have accomplished despite all the noise at our parent company.” Robbins and his team are also leaving the cupboards somewhat bare (somewhat intentionally), but luckily, they still have one last Tom Cruise “Mission: Impossible” movie.

After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”

Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”

The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.
