The Big Bang Theory became an absolute fan favorite when it hit the CBS screens in 2007. It brought forth the genius of Chuck Lorre as well as the stunning ensemble that hooked fans to the edge of their seats. But out of the lot, the most famous of the group would definitely be actor Jim Parsons, whose take on Sheldon Cooper instantly became a major hit.
Playing the smartest person in the room wasn’t easy, but given his acting chops, Parsons managed to play the role to perfection for 12 long seasons.

While every fan has their favorite moments and episodes from the show, for me, The Adhesive Duck Deficiency in Season 3 proved that Parsons was not just an actor—he was a legend.

For the past four years, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been known to the public for the tragic end to her life. Director of the new Hulu documentary, “Last Take: ‘Rust and the Story of Halyna,” Rachel Mason wants to remind the world that she was an artist.
“What I hated to see was that she was seen as this sort of tragic victim because that’s the exact opposite of who she was,” Mason told TheWrap. “She was a very forthright person. She was motivated. She was absolutely not the kind of person that you would think of as a victim.”
The documentarian and performance artist sought to show a lesser-known side of the Dp whom she befriended a decade ago in, “Last Take: ‘Rust’ and the Story of Halyna,” which is now streaming on Hulu.

"The Big Bang Theory" shines a spotlight on nerd culture thanks to hilarious storylines and endearing characters that helped shape the careers of Jim Parsons, Melissa Rauch, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar, just to name a few. While the antics of Sheldon Cooper (Parsons), Howard Wolowitz (Helberg), Raj Koothrappali (Nayyar), and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) already offer plenty of laughs, the show would not be complete without big guest stars.
Many guest stars have solidified their place within the fabric of pop culture, which is important for a show that makes so many references to well-known movies and TV shows. It gives the characters a chance to interact with many of the celebrities that they refer to while making jokes that share details about a person's career.

If you could increase your lifespan by some three and a half years, wouldn't you do everything in your power to do it?
No sweat. All you need to do is win an Academy Award and an extended life can be yours.
Indeed, a Plos One journal study published in 2022 found that the individuals who had won Oscars lived on average 77.1 years, while those who had merely been nominated lived 73.6 years. For further context, overall life expectancy in the U.S. is 77.4 years, so Oscar winners are about on par with civilians, while Oscar losers have shorter lives.
To find out why Oscar winners live longer, Gold Derby reached out to study author Ian Robertson, founding director of the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience in Dublin, and now a distinguished scientist in the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas, who has devoted an inordinate amount of...

When Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on this day three years ago, filmmaker Alisa Kovalenko bid farewell to her partner and four-year-old son and joined the Ukrainian Volunteer Army.
As she traded her camera for a rifle, she couldn’t leave behind her instinct to document. What emerged is “My Dear Theo,” a poignant video diary for her son, set to premiere in the main competition at the Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Festival (Cph:dox) in March.
Kovalenko filmed her fellow soldiers during moments of camaraderie and reprieve, including conversations with their children, offering an intimate and rarely seen portrait from the frontline. As time passed, she also filmed her own calls with her son, who had taken refuge in France with his father.
“I still believe that documentary cinema is a key to the heart,” she tells Variety in an exclusive interview. “You can feel connected and you can feel empathy.

Since the ending of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the ever-active fandom has patiently awaited an update on Daisy Ridley's character, Rey. Is Emperor Palpatine's granddaughter coming back? When will she return to the universe she took by storm?
The franchise's next trilogy is tentatively called New Jedi Order and will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is mostly recognized as the showrunner for the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. She recruited George Nofli to write the script, which he also did for Ocean's 12 and The Bourne Ultimatum. While they have hopefully been pining away with the Force, Ridley is breaking (a little) news.
“I have not read the latest script, but I know what’s happening, and I know the story, and I think what feels really good is that George is a phenomenal writer,” Ridley said to ComicBook.com. “I think we’re making sure that...

The gold-plated meltdown that has followed the revelation of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past anti-Muslim and racist tweets — with anti-George Floyd and pro-Hitler sentiments thrown in — has now required numerous apologies/explanations from the Best Actress Oscar nominee. Gascón’s previous online remarks have seriously cratered the odds for her and her film, which is nominated for 13 Oscars. The journalist and podcaster who uncovered Gascón’s troubling social media posts insists it was good old-fashioned reporting and she was not a “studio plant” fueling a smear campaign underwritten by a rival nominee.
In any case Gascón’s self-inflicted mess is the latest example of an internet-powered scandal that has threatened to derail an Oscar campaign. Here’s a look at the four most notable examples this century and how they played out.

"The Big Bang Theory" ended its 12-season run in 2019, but apparently, it's still a major hit with audiences. According to Deadline, the series was the "most-binged" title in all of streaming in 2024 (which the outlet pulled from a Nielsen report).
According to Nielsen, "The Big Bang Theory" boasted an average of 265.5 episodes per audience member, which apparently translates to 29.1 billion minutes of streaming (which is seriously impressive). The show also managed to place seventh in all of the year's most-streamed titles, and 58% percent of its audience was from the highly valuable age group of 18 to 49. Deadline also noted that, in the Nielsen report, "most-binged" is drawn from shows that have at least 50 episodes ("The Big Bang Theory" has 279) and viewers had to spend the length of a single episode, which in the case of this series is about 20 minutes, in order to qualify. Throughout his life span, Jimmy Carter has lived through many important events in history. But on top of being a former president and a Nobel-winning humanitarian, the actor was also apparently a film buff, which wouldn’t be the first for a U.S. President. Having apparently screened over 400 movies in the White House during his term in office, it’s safe to conclude that Carter was fond of the medium.

This further makes the fact that he died while Lily-Rose Depp’s Nosferatu was screening in theatres all the way more poetic, especially considering that he was there for all of the movie adaptations.

Bob Dylan has won a variety of prestigious awards in his lifetime. The iconic songwriter and musician scored his breakout hit with his 1963 sophomore album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and is known for songs such as "Like a Rolling Stone," "The Times They Are a-Changin'," and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall." Some of the most iconic Bob Dylan albums include 1975's Blood on the Tracks and 1997's Time Out of Mind as well as the 1965 albums Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, for which he initially drew controversy for bringing electric instrumentation into folk music.
Dylan's life has been brought to the screen multiple times in movies including the Martin Scorsese documentary No Direction Home and the experimental Todd Haynes drama I'm Not There, in which Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and Marcus Carl Franklin all play different facets of Dylan. Former US President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at 100, Leaves Behind a Legacy of Friendship with India
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and the longest-living American president, passed away at the age of 100. Surrounded by his family, Carter breathed his last on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. Beyond his impactful presidency, Carter shared a unique and heartwarming bond with India, one that left an indelible mark on a small village in Haryana.
In 1978, Carter visited India, becoming the first US president to do so after the Emergency ended and the Janata Party assumed power. His visit was symbolic, reflecting his admiration for India’s democracy. During a speech to the Indian Parliament, Carter commended India for its commitment to democratic values amidst challenges faced by developing nations.
“India’s struggles, which we often share, remind us of the path forward. The answer does not lie in authoritarianism,” Carter had remarked on January 2, 1978. His words resonated as he highlighted that India’s...

Tributes poured in from all spheres of politics, entertainment and culture as notable figures honored Jimmy Carter and his legacy as the 39th President of the United States, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and longtime climate and human rights advocate, following his death this afternoon in Plains, Ga.
At 100, Carter — who was born on Oct. 1, 1924 — lived longer than any other U.S. president and had the longest post-presidency. The Carter Center said there would be public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., as well as a private interment in Plains, Ga. The final arrangements of a state funeral are still pending.
Chip Carter, his son, said in a statement: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world...

The Big Bang Theory concluded after its 12-season long run in 2019, wrapping up the central stories of best friends Sheldon and Leonard in a memorable way. By the series’ end, Sheldon eventually achieves his lifelong dream of winning the Nobel Prize alongside his wife Amy, while Leonard embarks on a new chapter in his marriage with Penny.

Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude” — an elliptical epic of fate, family, politics and madness in Macondo, a fictional town that represents the wider, tragic history of Colombia and Latin America as a whole — has been made into a Netflix series.
That’s Netflix; the streaming service better known for “Squid Game,” “Tiger King” and the more overpriced works of Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes.
Bad idea, right? Well, to further quote that other prizeworthy wordsmith Olivia Rodrigo, “f—k it, it’s fine.”
More than fine, actually. The first season of this two-part, Spanish-language production can come across at times like a highbrow telenovela. But the sweeping pageant does an impressive job of streamlining García Márquez’s idiosyncratic, discursive novel into an expeditious but still thoughtful, contemplative and, yes, realistically magical eight hours.

The shattering of a childhood dream is symbolic of the cruelly contorted fate of a nation in “Baghdad Messi.” Kurdish-Belgian filmmaker Sahim Omar Kalifa has expanded his much-acclaimed 2012 short into an affecting social drama that unfolds amid violence and fear in Iraq, 2009, during the second Gulf War. Centered on a soccer-mad young boy whose family is forced to move from the capital to a small village after his leg is blown off in a terrorist attack, “Baghdad Messi” has an almost documentary-like realism that makes compelling viewing of Iraq’s international feature Oscar submission.
Born in Iraqi Kurdistan during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88), Kalifa fled to Belgium in 2001 and has since forged a successful career with Oscar-shortlisted shorts, feature fiction (“Zagros”) and co-directing the 2023 documentary feature “Iraq’s Invisible Beauty,” a portrait of Iraqi photographer Latif al-Ani, whose work since the 1950s has documented Iraq’s architectural landmarks and urban landscape,...

“Time and again, he took on the big fights, grappled with policy deeply and seriously, held the powerful to account and spoke hard truths — sometimes as a lonely voice arguing unfashionable positions,” Kathleen Kingsbury, opinion editor, wrote in a memo this morning.
Krugman plans to write a final column.
On the social media platform Blue Sky, Krugman wrote that he “decided to leave in search of more freedom in terms of both style and content. And that’s all I am going to say for now.” He wrote that he would be announcing future plans.

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer and key art for One Hundred Years of Solitude, which is based on the masterpiece by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez and directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López. The series, consisting of two parts of eight episodes each, will debut its first installment on December 11, 2024.
In the new trailer, some of the iconic moments that have captivated readers of the novel for over 50 years come to life on screen: the founding of Macondo and the arrival of Melquíades, the tensions of family life, the passions of the town’s inhabitants, the emergence of political conflicts and the ensuing war, and the chestnut tree where José Arcadio Buendía fulfills the prophecy of his solitude, unleashing a rain of yellow flowers.

Everything old was new again at this year’s Cairo Film Festival.
Filling out a super-sized 45th edition, the Egyptian event introduced a new section dedicated to heritage titles, showcasing 10 gems of world cinema, among them titles like “The Lonely Wife” and “The Color of Pomegranates” to mark the centenaries of film greats Satyajit Ray and Sergei Parajanov, as well as 4K restorations of “The Godfather Part II,” “The Thief of Baghdad” and “Cleopatra,” among several more.
As part of a bolstered Cairo Classics program, the festival also premiered 14 milestones of Egyptian cinema freshly remastered and reintroduced to an eager public. And as the Cairo Film Festival charts a new course under president Hussein Fahmy and artistic director Essam Zakarea, this restorative vocation will stay a cornerstone of their wider mission.
“Egyptian cinema is one of the oldest in the world, but we have a problem with our archive,” Zakarea tells Variety.

Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee added a prestigious honor Tuesday to his already exceedingly decorated career in the arts. The three-time Oscar winner was presented with the Praemium Imperiale at a black-tie ceremony in Tokyo. Often described as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize, the award is handed out annually to artists working in various fields. A mark of the prize’s prestige, past honorees in the film and theater category have included true icons of film history, such as Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese and Catherine Deneuve.
“I’d like to think that my career is a never-ending school where I learn about cinema and about myself and about the world. There is no end to that learning,” Lee said during a news conference in Tokyo ahead of the awards ceremony. “As the first person from Taiwan to receive this award, I’m proud and deeply grateful.

Megalopolis.Leaving the Cannes premiere of Megalopolis (2024) earlier this year, I remember a few friends and colleagues asking if I’d liked it. Truth is, I didn’t know; a few months later, I still don’t. There were things that felt outright puzzling—the clunky dialogue, the nonsensical storylines, the campy excess of it all. And yet, much like Joey Shapiro at the Chicago Reader, “I also found myself in awe of it over and over again.”Such an ambivalent response isn’t exactly the most common reaction to Francis Ford Coppola’s latest, which has received a raucous critical drubbing since its release. “Megaflopolis might be a better name for it,” Tara Brady quips at the Irish Times; over at Entertainment Weekly, Maureen Lee Lenker sees it as “a stain on [the director’s] legacy”: aside from “his being the mastermind behind two of cinema's greatest achievements, he's also now...

Celebrated Bangladeshi filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has been put in charge of his country’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
In August, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was appointed to lead Bangladesh‘s interim government following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina‘s flight from the country amid mass protests. As it is an interim government, Yunus serves as Chief Advisor, rather than as Prime Minister. Farooki, though effectively the Culture Minister, has the formal title of Cultural Advisor.
Yunus expanded his cabinet on Sunday. Farooki was among those who were sworn in on Sunday evening. He is Bangladesh’s best-known filmmaker internationally. His films have represented Bangladesh at the Oscars three times.

7 most underrated moments from The Big Bang Theory (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Big Bang Theory remains one of the American entertainment industry’s most beloved and unforgettable sitcoms. The top-rated hit show lasted twelve seasons and entertained its fans with great moments, incredible cast chemistry, and unstoppable laughs. After popular sitcoms like Friends and How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory became the most successful hang-out show and received massive ratings, with a whopping 18 million audience.
Although The Big Bang Theory received a second spinoff, Georgie and Many’s First Marriage, after the conclusion of Young Sheldon, the original show’s popularity and its best moments had been long forgotten by its fanbase, these are not iconic moments; instead, they are character beats that were mostly underrated.
Sheldon Reveals His Fortress of Shame
The last few seasons of The Big Bang Theory may be considered less consistent, but they contain some hidden gems.

At a town hall event on Saturday in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as Elon Musk continued his tour of the state in support of Donald Trump, the topic of immigration came up. That in itself was hardly unusual — Musk, Trump, and the entire Maga movement have been demonizing immigrants throughout the 2024 election cycle. But this time, someone wanted Musk, born in South Africa, to share what he had learned in becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen himself.

When it comes to Doctor Who characters, K9 may not be the most fearsome warrior of them all. This small robot dog has been popping up in the show since the late 1970s, and fans immediately fell in love with him. His charming robotic voice and slight movements have become synonymous with Classic Who, and the vast majority of fans wouldn't want him any other way.
Back in 2010, this iconic character received his own spin-off series, but it left a lot of viewers wondering why it was ever made in the first place. The show gave K9 a brand-new look and a set of pals, both of which felt incredibly out of place. But what went wrong with K9, and why is it not linked to the rest of the Doctor Who canon?

In maybe the best Saturday Night Live promo of the season so far, John Mulaney is joined by a surprise guest who wants to contribute some rather intricate, obscure and arcana-filled bits of writing for the new spot.
“Oh my God, Bob Dylan! What are you doing here?” Mulaney asks, surprised to see the rock icon in the studio.
Cut to cast member James Austin Johnson, trading his usual Trump drag for a wicked impression of latter-day Dylan.
“Season 50, they’re busting out the big guns,” this Dylan says in that unmistakable nasal drawl. “I won a Nobel in literature.”
So Mulaney agrees to give “Bob” a try, reading a cue card with the great one’s words: “Hey, it’s great to be back in the Big Apple. Herman Melville was born here, author of Moby Dick. That’s the ultimate fish story if you ask me.”

Real scientists happened to prove work done by Sheldon on Tbbt? (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
They say life imitates art. But you know what? Sometimes, it’s the other way around! In the Big Bang Theory episode “The Confirmation Polarization,” Sheldon and Amy got some mind-blowing news. Scientists at Fermilab have confirmed their theory of super Asymmetry. Researchers were studying kaons, a type of subatomic particle, and their findings initially contradicted established predictions. However, Amy and Sheldon’s paper came to the rescue, bridging the gap and explaining the mystery.
As the plot thickened, the Fermilab scientists eyed a Nobel Prize. The twist? Only three could snag the coveted award. They plotted to cut Amy out of the nomination, leaving Sheldon in a moral quandary. He declared that he didn’t want the nomination if Amy was omitted. Classic Sheldon, right? The episode wrapped up unresolvedly, leaving fans buzzing about the realities behind this science fiction.

Sandra Bullock, a long-time favorite of Kunal Nayyar’s Rajesh Koothrappali, was also expected to make a cameo in the show, but it was scrapped due to scheduling conflicts. However, it might have been for the best, given the amount of backlash that the character’s ending received.

People may or may not realize, but the things we read, watch, or listen all day can have an effect on our psyche. Take the case of Maria Carolina Geel (pen name of real-life author Georgina Silva Jimenez). According to her admirer, Gabriela Mistral, a Nobel laureate in literature, Geel was following in the footsteps of another real-life Chilean novelist, Maria Luisa Bombal. In January 1941, Bombal shot her lover, Eulogio Sanchez Errazuriz, in the arm three times at the same Crillon hotel in Santiago, where Geel killed Roberto Pumarino Valenzuela on April 14, 1955. It would be safe to assume that Geel was heavily influenced by Bombal and was probably trying to recreate history by killing Roberto. Or she’d hit a writer’s block and was trying to find inspiration for her next piece. In prison, Geel wrote one of her most celebrated books, Carcel de mujeres (or Women’s Prison...

South Korean writer Han Kang, whose international breakthrough novel The Vegetarian was made into a film, has won the Nobel Prize in Literature 2024.
The Swedish Academy unveiled the honoree Thursday, lauding “her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
Han’s 2007 novel The Vegetarian, her first novel to be translated into English, won the International Booker Prize in 2015. The story of Yeong-hye, a part-time graphic artist and homemaker, whose decision to stop eating meat leads to mental health struggles and problems in her familial life, was adapted as a feature film by Woo-Seong Lim and screened at Sundance in 2010.
The honor is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, in 1895. The others are prizes in chemistry, physics and medicine, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize.

Based on a real murder in Chile in the 1950s, Maite Alberdi’s fictional story of obsession has glamour and style, but no intensity
Chile’s Oscar entry this year is this quirky, unsatisfying oddity from director Maite Alberdi, co-produced by Pablo Larraín, and inspired by a stranger-than-fiction true-crime case from the 1950s. It is elegant and amusing enough at first, with some rackety humour that Alfred Hitchcock might have enjoyed. But it never really lands the punch it seems to promise; the intense psychological drama of single-white-female-meets-Ripley never materialises. A documentary might have served this material better, or a fiction feature that doesn’t have a made-up character as the lead.
In Chile in 1955, the entire nation was gripped by the arrest of bestselling author María Carolina Geel, who had brazenly shot her lover dead in the dining room of the plush Hotel Crillón in Santiago, apparently because...

All good things must come to an end, and that includes "The Big Bang Theory." After kicking off its run in 2007, the show concluded in 2019 after winning veritable piles of Emmy Awards (including several for star Jim Parsons) and after a whopping twelve seasons on CBS. It's been a while since the series ended, so it's fair to ask: what happens in the finale, and what does it mean for the entirety of the show's story?

“I’m still a mother to the depths of my soul. Not according to your values, but mine,” spats Maryam, the conflicted protagonist of “Seven Days,” Ali Samadi Ahadi‘s latest feature. “Seven Days” made its world premiere as a Centrepiece film at Toronto International Film Festival as one of two Mohammad Rassoulof-written films this year.
Seven Days screened at Toronto International Film Festival
Like many social realist Iranian films, Ali Samadi Ahadi’s “Seven Days” is perplexing. Tehran-based women’s rights activist Maryam (Vishka Asayesh) is granted a seven-day medical leave from her six-year prison sentence. Maryam’s brother (Sina Parvaneh) and husband Behnam (Majid Bakhtiari) have other plans for her, however. They roll out an intrepid scheme to smuggle her out of the country so she can join her husband and two children in Germany, thus making her brief reprieve from prison permanent.
At first, Maryam chafes against the idea.

This past week, I’ve watched politicians, celebrities and political pundits descend on my hometown of Chicago for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). It has been a euphoric display with thunderous speeches from the Obamas, beautiful moments between Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz and his family and even heartbreaking stories that speak to the aftermath of overturning Roe v. Wade. Democrats are fired up and hitting back in ways we haven’t seen in years. The 2024 DNC culminated on Thursday evening with Vice President Harris’ touching and sweeping speech accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
