The long-running Chuck Lorre sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" is a series about a group of super nerdy friends trying to survive adulthood despite the fact that adulthood really isn't kind to nerds, and one episode in particular is a love letter to a specific corner of nerd-dom. The season 9 episode "The Spock Resonance" is one of the most important in the series because it highlights just how much "Star Trek" can mean to its fans. Indeed, it's a celebration of fandom and the people who love these stories so much that they make them part of their lives, like Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons).
Sheldon is, of course, an awkward adult who has a tough time with relationships when the show starts, but he grows over time and eventually even gets married to a brilliant scientist in the form of Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik). In fact, it's in "The...

Can you imagine "Star Trek" without Leonard Nimoy as Spock? Well, that's almost exactly what happened.
The 2016 documentary "For The Love of Spock" (directed by Nimoy's son Adam) explores both Nimoy's life story and how Spock became a cultural icon. One takeaway from the doc is that those two stories were inseparable, yet it doesn't elide some of Nimoy's early struggles with the character.
Nimoy had appeared on "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's previous series "The Lieutenant." This meant Nimoy's "Star Trek" was easy since Roddenberry specifically wanted him on the show. Specifically (as heard in an interview clip included in "For The Love of Spock"), Roddenberry thought Nimoy's long, sharp cheekbones would be a good fit for an alien character. Spock's pointed ears, the greatest signifier of his Vulcan (originally Martian) heritage, were designed to specifically complement Nimoy's looks (and they did).

NBC’s Brilliant Minds will premiere in September of the upcoming fall season.
While medical dramas are a dime a dozen, Brilliant Minds differs because it’s based on the real-life Dr. Oliver Wolf Sacks.
The series focuses on the larger-than-life neurologist who was not afraid to break the rules to help his patients live life to the fullest.
(Brendan Meadows/NBC)
While the series focuses mainly on the protagonist, it also includes an exciting ensemble, including his old friend Dr. Pierce and his team of interns.
The team explores cases related to the human mind while examining their own mental health issues and relationships.
With real-life inspiration, rich characters, and a talented cast, we hope this series lasts for many seasons. Meet the cast and characters in Brilliant Minds.

"Star Trek: The Original Series" has three first episodes. Isn't this an irreconcilable contradiction? Let me explain.
There's the first produced "Star Trek" pilot, "The Cage," which starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. When the Enterprise visits planet Talos IV, Pike is abducted by telepathic aliens the Talosians. NBC passed, feeling "The Cage" was a subpar effort, but let creator Gene Roddenberry take a second stab at it.
That resulted in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." When the Enterprise tries and fails to pass an energy field at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy, crewman Gary Mitchell (Gary Lockwood) develops psychic powers and goes mad.
The only thing that carries over between the two pilots is Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is closer to the finished series (it does star William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk), but there are still noticeable differences.

Star Trek has celebrated found families and close bonds between shipmates on long space voyages since The Original Series. Only a handful of Star Trek actors have appeared alongside their real-life children, creating special moments on screen. Star Trek actors like John de Lancie, Patrick Stewart, and William Shatner have had their children make cameo appearances in the franchise.
Star Trek has always been a family affair, and some Trek actors have starred alongside their real-life children. Since the camaraderie of the crew of the USS Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series, the franchise has always celebrated found families and the bonds formed between shipmates on long space voyages. Star Trek has largely been geared toward families, with its stories of fun space adventures and moral lessons. Several Star Trek actors also found love with others involved in the franchise, most notably Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.

There would be no Star Trek without Leonard Nimoy. At least, not the franchise as fans know it and love it. With the start of a new golden age following the franchise's latest releases, Nimoy's legacy as Spock continues to be pivotal.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the fourth television series in the Star Trek franchise. It ran for seven seasons and a hundred and seventy-six episodes in syndication. The finale, "What You Leave Behind", aired on June 2nd, 1999. DS9 was markedly different from Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show setting was a recovered enemy space station near the planet Bajor. A grieving Starfleet commander, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), assigned to help the Bajorans recover from a devastating occupation; discovers a wormhole to a distant region of the galaxy, the Gamma Quadrant. What followed was a thrilling, slow-burn escalation to the epic, Dominion War; a conflict against powerful Gamma Quadrant adversaries that threatened the United Federation of Planets.

Shout! Studios has just acquired worldwide rights to the new Star Trek feature documentary What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Shout! plans to release it across multiple platforms including theatrical by year’s end.
The in-depth retrospective approaches the edgy Deep Space Nine as the most-misunderstood of the franchises that have flown under the banner of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek brand. When it premiered in January 1993 as a spinoff of Star Trek: The Next Generation, many devoted Trek fans thought the show flouted Roddenberry’s overarching vision of humanity’s noble and united future in the age of interstellar exploration.
The syndicated Deep Space Nine (created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller) eventually won fans over and endured for 176 episodes over seven seasons with its chronicle of a space station that is (not unlike Casablanca in the classic film) a place of intrigue,...

“…More importantly, the personal touch provokes some bracing moments that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. It’s one thing to have Neil DeGrasse Tyson or various Nasa technicians talk about how they were inspired by Spock – or even to have Trek-loving actors like Jim Parsons and Jason Alexander say that they sympathize with stories of Nimoy staying mostly in character when his show wasn’t shooting. But only Adam Nimoy could comment knowledgeably about what it was like to have a drunken argument with Leonard Nimoy and then walk out into a world where images of Mr. Spock were impossible to avoid. The best scenes in For The Love Of Spock are the most conventional, featuring famous folk praising a pop culture legend. But the scenes that most linger in the mind are more like the one where the director confesses his complicated feelings about his father to another Spock,...

More than any other character or image from the 50-year culture phenomenon that is Star Trek, arguably nothing is more instantly recognizable than Spock, and his gesture of greeting. When Leonard Nimoy died last year, the outpouring of affection was overwhelming, but perhaps not surprising given the rapid fan base of the franchise. Adam Nimoy (son of Leonard)'s documentary For the Love of Spock is a very intimate and interesting portrayal of the man and the actor, his personal and professional development, and his relationship with his son.Adam Nimoy had already begun work on the documentary in the few months before his father's death. It was originally intended as a film about the character and its cultural significance. But after Nimoy's death, his son decided...

The death of Leonard Nimoy was a sad occasion for all fans of Star Trek, but filmmaker and director Adam Nimoy didn’t just lose a cultural icon – he lost a father. As a result, Nimoy’s planned documentary about Spock and the character’s impact was expanded to examine his late father’s life and the the not-always-perfect relationship between the two of them.

To the people who made the original Star Trek, the fan culture that sprung up around the show was at first flattering and then disorienting. Creator Gene Roddenberry cast the show with experienced character actors who’d spent years in Hollywood stuck in bit parts. When suddenly viewers started quoting their dialogue to them and asking questions about their process, they weren’t sure what to make of it. Initially, Leonard Nimoy capitalized on his newfound fame: making public appearances, giving interviews, and doing everything he could to keep his “Mr. Spock” popular. But as the character loomed large over the rest of his career, Nimoy struggled with how to respect what Mr. Spock meant to people, while also staying viable as an artist—and, whenever possible, spending time with his family.

A new documentary saluting the work of the greatly-missed Leonard Nimoy...
A project that was conceived before the sad loss of Leonard Nimoy last year, For The Love Of Spock is a documentary being directed by his son, Adam Nimoy. Originally, the plan was for it to focus more on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek this year. But following Leonard Nimoy’s death, the film became centred on the original Mr Spock.
Adam Nimoy has brought together interviews with the likes of William Shatner, Zachary Quinto, Jj Abrams, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg. Adam Nimoy’s sister is involved too, and the film will arrive in cinemas and on demand in the Us from September 9th.
Here, though, is a trailer. Heck, the world could really use a few more Leonard Nimoys right now. Llap.
One last thing - here's the new poster, too...

Justin Lin's Star Trek 3 is set to open in theaters July 8, 2016, so the film should start shooting any day now. Star Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the franchise, gave fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse at his own preparation for the shoot as he gets into character. Despite popular fan-fiction to the contrary, Quinto does not spend his days sporting Spock's signature bowl cut, arched eyebrows, and pointed ears; it takes a fair bit of manscaping (Vulcanscaping?) to do the character justice. Star Simon Pegg has joined the screenwriting team for this untitled installment of the franchise and will join Quinto in front of the camera as well, along with returning stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin. Check out Quinto's behind-the-scenes image as he preps to shoot Star Trek 3: someone is preparing to emerge. A photo posted by Zachary Quinto (@zacharyquinto...

Adam Nimoy has been chatting about a new documentary, that'll pay tribute to his father, and to the character of Mr Spock.
Before his death back in February, the wonderful Leonard Nimoy had been working with his son, Adam, on a documentary by the name of For The Love Of Spock. The film is charting the story of the character across nearly five decades, and what made him so special, and as Adam Nimoy has said, "the inspiration was the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series, which is coming up next year. I had read a number of books on the making of Star Trek and just felt that there was a lot that was missing about the creation and evolution of Spock that we should re-tell in film form". His father agreeed.

Even before his father’s death in February, Adam Nimoy – son of Leonard – had been planning a documentary called For The Love Of Spock. Now he’s looking to raise $600,000 to cover the costs. Take a look at the pitch video.Talking to Variety, Nimoy said that the additional funds will be used to help finish the film, which has Zachary Quinto – no stranger to the ears, eyebrows and logical disposition himself – narrating. “The funding of this film through Kickstarter will enable us to continue with production — which will mostly take the form of filming interviews of dad’s friends, colleagues and family members,” Nimoy says. “It will also enable us to license the hundreds of film clips and still photographs of Mr. Spock as he has appeared on television and in feature films over the last 50 years.”The aim is to celebrate Leonard Nimoy’s work and life around and beyond Star Trek,...
