Disney live-action remakes have had a difficult reputation thus far. Audiences have been mostly negative towards many of these films as they usually don't offer any new or innovative storytelling outside the visual technology they're able to arguably improve upon, although many say these movies don't look much better than the originals in the first place.
However, quite a few of these live-action remakes do provide new and exciting experiences for their audiences. With both Snow White and Lilo & Stitch getting the live-action treatment this year, audiences are looking back at the best live-action films Disney has to offer, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Snow White might look to defy expectations and some of its biggest haters if early box office tracking is to be believed. Snow White, a remake of Walt Disney Animation's very first animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, has faced considerable controversy since it was announced that West Side Story star Rachel Zegler would play the titular princess. The trailer received a bevy of dislikes on YouTube, making it seem like Snow White would be destined to flop. Yet, the internet is not always a reflection of real life.
According to Deadline, the box office tracking firm Quorum reports that early box office tracking estimates that Snow White could open between $63 to $70 million over the three-day box office weekend of Mar. 21, 2025. This would easily be the biggest opening weekend for star Rachel Zegler, whose previous winner was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which opened...

When A.A. Milne's 1926 children's novel "Winnie-the-Pooh" finally entered the public domain in 2022, filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield was waiting in the wings. For many decades, Winnie-the-Pooh was owned by Disney, and the corporate megalith had always been protective about its property. Pooh was a gentle and whimsical extension of the Disney brand. When Disney lost exclusive rights, Frake-Waterfield elected to shove his thumb in Disney's eye and make "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey," an incredibly cheap and horrendously bad slasher movie wherein everyone's favorite silly-old-bear was reimagined as an eight-foot murdering lummox.
Although "Blood and Honey" is a terrible movie, curious audiences attended out of morbid curiosity, and the film ended up grossing $7.7 million on a paltry $100,000 budget. Its success inspired Frake-Waterfields to not only make "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2," but also to announce a whole spate of other public domain childhood classics reinterpreted as cheap slasher movies. If all goes to plan,...

Tom Hanks is known as Hollywood’s Dad due to his penchant for choosing good-guy roles in films. From Saving Private Ryan to Sully, the actor has rarely played characters that are grey or completely villainous. So, it was only natural that he got to play the ‘grumpiest man in the world’ in the American remake of the Swedish film A Man Called Ove.
Remade as A Man Called Otto, the film was an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel and starred Hanks as the eponymous Otto. The film saw a lonely widower having to deal with a new family that moves into his neighborhood and how he connects with them. Hanks revealed why he felt that the story needed to be said for an American audience.

Tim Burton almost quit filmmaking after the disastrous reception of the live-action Dumbo movie. The film fell far short at the box office compared to other Disney live-action remakes. After his unexpected slump, Burton turned to TV development but found his spark again with Wednesday.
The live-action Dumbo movie could have ended Tim Burton's movie-making career. A reimagining of the original 1941 movie, which was itself based on Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl's book, the 2014 remake featured a CGI-animated elephant in a live-action setting. It also included live-action characters, who were played by Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and more renowned actors. Tim Burton served as the director. The live-action Dumbo earned poor reviews and proved to be a box office disappointment, earning just $353 million on a budget of $170 million.
After five years of inactivity in theaters, Burton returned from his reprieve to develop Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but it still weighs on him.

Some original live-action Disney movies like Hocus Pocus and Enchanted celebrate classic Disney tropes, providing humor and nostalgia. Movies like Tuck Everlasting and Saving Mr. Banks offer fresh perspectives on beloved stories outside of remakes. Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure showcase Disney's success with original live-action films beyond remakes.
In an age of cinema hugely characterized by all of Disney's live-action remakes, there are several original live-action Disney movies that are better than most of them. The Disney live-action remake trend took off in the mid-2010s, which can be traced back to the success of Cinderella. Maleficent came out earlier, serving as a soft retelling of Sleeping Beauty from its magnificent villainess' perspective. These movies have seen varying levels of success in capturing what made the original a hit while adding something to the story.
There are still plenty of upcoming Disney live-action remakes that will join the ranks of these titles.

Discover the real-life origins of Winnie the Pooh and how he got his peculiar name from a Canadian black bear named Winnipeg. A young Christopher Robin meeting Winnie at the London Zoo inspired A.A. Milne to write a series based on their interactions. Despite a new horror film adaptation, Winnie the Pooh remains a beloved children's character with a long history in media.
From a beloved children's character to a cold-hard killer, Winnie the Pooh has had one of the oddest modern trajectories for an iconic character. But many don't know about the humble honey-loving bear's origins and how he got the peculiar name. Knowing the background is important to understand how the character became such a huge success and how he has evolved over the years.

As much as "Star Wars" might seem like a clear net-positive for any actor's career, history has shown that it's not always as good as it sounds. Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin in the first movie, was famously bullied out of acting for his supposedly bad performance. Natalie Portman also struggled to find work after the prequels because her performance as Padme was considered pretty wooden too. Basically everyone involved in these movies is indeed a perfectly fine actor; the problem was just that George Lucas is bad at directing his actors, as shown by how even Christopher Lee and Samuel L. Jackson seemed to performing below their abilites.
Even in the agreed-upon good movies in the franchise, the actors involved could sometimes struggle to find meaty roles later on. Mark Hamill became a much-celebrated voice actor after the original trilogy, while Carrie Fisher carved out a career for...

In the blissful infancy of YouTube back in 2006, one of the medium's earliest viral sensations was a video called "Scary Mary." YouTube creator Christopher Rule edited his own trailer for "Mary Poppins," Disney's 1964 musical classic. Instead of depicting the movie's family-friendly fantasy, though, Rule cut "Scary Mary" as a horror film. The result was surprisingly convincing, and posited an intriguing, funny, and somewhat disturbing thesis: With a change in perspective, beloved fictional characters can instantly switch from kind to creepy.

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.

Filmmakers loves an underdog and movies have a long tradition of supporting the rights of workers, dating all the way back to the silent era. Here are some classic movies that celebrate workers’ right to strike for better wages and safer working conditions and the sometimes unlikely allies they find along the way. Many are based on true stories, including John Sayles’ masterful “Matewan,” about a coal miner strike in West Virginia, as well as Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning documentary, “Harlan County, USA.”

Well… I may have gotten a little over-zealous with my predictions! I had just seen Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One and thought it was absolutely fantastic, couple that with the fact that it has been getting great reviews (including the 9/10 from our own Chris Bumbray), nearly completely sold out showings at my local theater and a solid A cinemascore from audiences, and I thought this one was going to hit higher in its opening weekend. Right now the 3-day for Dead Reckoning Part One is coming in around $53 million, making it the fourth highest 3-day in franchise history after Fallout (61.2 million), Rogue Nation ($55.5) and M:i-2 (57.8). It still has a chance to take down the 5-day record which currently sits with M:i-2 at $78.8 million, but Saturday numbers will have to hit harder for it to achieve that.

When it comes to deciding what constitutes a theatrical live-action remake of a Disney animated classic, every film fan seems to have an opinion, with many voicing them loudly following the release of Rob Marshall‘s “The Little Mermaid” (2023). For those of us at Gold Derby, however, we are strict constructionists as to what constitutes a genuine example, so here are the rules for our photo gallery of Disney live-action remakes ranked:
Eligible:
*Any live-action theatrical remake of the story of the original animated film. Where animal characters are depicted, computer-generated images are acceptable. (No cartoons!)
Not Eligible:
*Sequels or prequels to Disney remakes. Same characters but different story? Not a remake.
*Original films based on characters from the remakes. So “Cruella,” “Maleficient” and “Christopher Robin”? Bye.
*Remakes designated for Disney+ premieres, such as “Lady and the Tramp,” Robert Zemeckis‘ “Pinocchio” and “Peter Pen and Wendy.” The sole exception is...

Remember when actors appearing in multiple giant franchises seemed like a huge deal? Now that IP rules Hollywood, hardly anyone even bats an eye anymore when a "Star Wars" fave joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a DC Universe actor plays the Big Bad in the latest "Fast & Furious" movie. That's doubly the case when it comes to Disney-owned projects, between the studio's live-action and animation divisions, Pixar, the MCU, Lucasfilm, and its former Fox studios. This can lead to some amusing coincidences though, like that time Ewan McGregor went from playing sad, older Christopher Robin in the live-action "Winnie the Pooh" sequel "Christopher Robin" to playing sad, older Obi-Wan Kenobi in the live-action "Star Wars" series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."
Surprisingly, of all things it's filmmaker Rob Savage's "The Boogeyman" that marks the latest crossing of the streams among Disney properties. The upcoming horror movie, adapted from Stephen King...

After Rhys Frake-Waterfield's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey received abysmal reviews from the public, it may be a shock that an R-rated series called Christopher Robin is coming out starring characters from the 100 Acre Wood. While the comedy series Christopher Robin is not related to the 2023 slasher, they both conceptually share many traits. Since A. A Milne and E.H. Shepard's characters went into the public domain in 2022, the premise of Christopher Robin and his friends from the woods has been up for grabs for artists to reinterpret some classic children's stories.
The pilot of Christopher Robin will be directed by Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party), who also serves as an executive producer. The series is said to be a hybrid between live-action and animation with a darker tone that justifies its R-rated. Another Winnie The Pooh character gets an R-rated twist, with the new mature series Christopher Robin in development. The new series will be the second distorted adaption of A.A. Milne’s classic tale of Winnie The Pooh. Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey focused on the titular character of Pooh as the antagonist, but this new series promises its own twist as it focuses on Pooh's human friend Christopher Robin in an unexpected setting.
Variety reports that the Christopher Robin series is in development with Boat Rocker Studios and Bay Mills Studios and is expected to be a hybrid series, featuring both live-action and animation. Charlie Kesslering (Foreign Relations) has written the script and is set to executive produce, with Conrad Vernon also set to executive produce and direct the pilot. Step aside “Blood and Honey,” there’s a new adult spin on “Winnie the Pooh” now.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” breakout star Shamier Anderson is producing a live-action and animation hybrid series centered on Christopher Robin and his drug-induced epiphanies with woodland creatures. Currently titled “Christopher Robin,” the series is produced by Anderson and his brother Stephan James’ Bay Mills Studios, as well as Boat Rocker Studios. Bay Mills is currently under a first-look deal at Boat Rocker.
“Shrek 2” and “Sausage Party” director Conrad Vernon will helm the pilot from a script penned by Charlie Kesslering; both will executive produce.
Per the official synopsis, Christopher Robin is a disillusioned New Yorker navigating his quarter-life crisis with the help of the weird talking animals who live beyond a drug-induced portal outside his derelict apartment complex, the Hundred Acres.
There is no casting news yet.

Boat Rocker and Shamier Anderson and Stephan James’ Bay Mills Studios are developing Christopher Robin, an R-rated comedic reimagining of A.A. Milne’s beloved characters, Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh, as a television series.
The project is based on an original script from Charlie Kesslering, who will also executive produce. Conrad Vernon is on-board to direct the pilot episode and executive produce.

Just when you thought Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was going to be the only for-adults-only adaptation of the classic children’s story this year, Variety reports today on an entirely different project in the works from Boat Rocker Studios and Bay Mills Studios.
Titled “Christopher Robin,” this particular adaptation of the public domain story is said to be a hybrid of live action and animation, and it very much aims to be rated “R”.

A new trailer for the upcoming war-drama “White Bird”, starring Helen Mirren, has been unveiled, nearly one year after Lionsgate debuted the official trailer.
In the new two-minute clip, Mirren recounts stories from her character’s dark childhood in Nazi-occupied France, including how she fell in love with a boy who was made fun of in school and dubbed a “freak,” in order to teach her grandson a lesson about kindness.

The theatrical release of low-budget slasher movie “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” in Hong Kong has been abruptly canceled just two days before its scheduled outing.
No explanation has been offered, but suspicions that the film may have crossed one of Hong Kong’s increasingly complicated political red lines are certain to be raised.
That is because the Winnie the Pooh character is unflatteringly perceived to have a physical resemblance to China’s president, Xi Jinping. Online search for Winnie the Pooh is heavily censored within mainland China and Winnie the Pooh products are not distributed. China did not permit the import and release of Disney’s 2018 Winnie the Pooh film “Christopher Robin.”

Review: A group of high school students left my showing of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey after about thirty minutes. So that should tell you the level of quality we’re dealing with here. Even a group of cackling teenagers didn’t care for this nonsensical horror tale. When Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain, I knew we would be in for some really bad adaptations but I really didn’t expect the horror world to take to it so quickly. I guess that makes me blissfully ignorant because not only did they take to it, but they did it with the least amount of money possible. And boy does it show.
I don’t want this entire review to be negative, so...

A.A. Milne’s original “Winnie the Pooh” stories only lapsed into the public domain five months ago but the tubby little cubby has already made his foray into slasher films.
“Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” wrapped earlier this month and the first stills – showing a demonic looking Pooh and Piglet about to pounce on a scantily-clad young woman relaxing in a hot tub – have already set the internet on fire.
In an interview with Variety, director Rhys Waterfield – who is in post-production on four other films including “Firenado” and “Demonic Christmas Tree” – said the response to the stills has been “absolutely crazy.”
“Because of all the press and stuff we’re just going to start expediting the edit and getting it through post production as fast as we can really,” said Waterfield. “But also, making sure it’s still good. It’s gonna be a high priority.”

Have no fear: despite churning out more than 200 episodes over 12 seasons, The colorful, kitschy look of Loren Bouchard’s Fox hit is delightful in feature format — the film is, quite notably, the first hand-drawn, traditionally animated film theatrically released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in over a decade; the last time that happened was “Winnie the Pooh” in 2011 — and its quippy, high-energy jokes should appeal to a wide audience.

When Walt and Roy Disney launched the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923, traditional hand-drawn 2D animation put them on the map. After the massive success of the first animated feature film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" in 1937, the studio that would eventually become known as Walt Disney Pictures would continue to produce acclaimed animated classics in that style for decades.
But when "Winnie the Pooh" underperformed at the box office in 2011, the Mouse House started to almost completely dedicate their resources to a more "modern" 3D computer-generated approach to their animation style in their film and television projects. While the...

Emmy-award winning composer Geoff Zanelli is slated to compose the music for “The First Lady,” premiering on Showtime. The new hour-long anthology drama follows the lives of three of America’s First Ladies and stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.
Zanelli served as composer of films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Christopher Robin,” and he won an Emmy award for his work in the Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks miniseries “Into the West.” He also was nominated for HBO’s “The Pacific,” another Spielberg collaboration.
“I’ve had the honor of writing music for ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Into The West,’ both shows about distinct times in America’s history, but nothing as intimate as ‘The First Lady,'” Zanelli said. “We’re so up close and personal in this show.

“One of the great things about this film for me was how much was achieved practically, in camera,” explains “No Time to Die” visual effects supervisor Charlie Noble. While Noble handled the digital realm, the man responsible for those stunning practical effects is production special effects supervisor, Chris Corbould. These two artists were vital in bringing James Bond’s intense action sequences to life, though both of them will be the first to tell you: no matter how much adrenaline or explosions are pumped into a scene, it’s all about emotion. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“No Time to Die” marks a special full circle moment for the Bond series, and Corbould in particular. This is the fifteenth 007 outing that the effects master has worked on, going all the way back to “The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977. In a unique twist, “No Time to Die” is...

Continuing to look closely at the movies in the Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars, we come to “No Time to Die.” On paper, the latest James Bond movie and the last starring Daniel Craig may feel like the odd man out when it comes to this year’s race. Many wouldn’t consider it a “visual effects movie,” per sé, but in fact visual effects were necessary in making all of Bond’s physics-defying stunts feel grounded and real, as if they were all done at the fantastic locations where the movies takes place.
SEEMemo to the academy: It’s time for Hans Zimmer to finally win 2nd career Oscar
A six-time Oscar nominee, Chris Corbould has worked on the special effects for no less than 15 James Bond films, beginning with “The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977. He was also among the four VFX supervisors that won this...

Ewan McGregor has been singled out for the first time at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actor is nominated for his performance in “Halston” as the eponymous fashion designer, marking his first individual bid with SAG-AFTRA. McGregor is also coming off his first Emmy win last September, laying claim to Best Limited Series Actor, with numerous additional nominations at other award shows. In order to win at SAG, however, he will have to defeat some tough competition.
Other SAG nominees in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor include Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). Bartlett, Isaac, and Peters are all making their SAG debuts, none of them even scoring an ensemble bid in the past. Peters, like McGregor, won an Emmy for his performance in the supporting actor category. Keaton has the biggest SAG...
