The Harry Potter film series, based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling novels, remains one of the most acclaimed franchises worldwide. While it famously starred Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson in the lead roles, it also featured a veteran actor who joined the series in the third film, Prisoner of Azkaban. This actor played the role of Sirius Black, the titular prisoner, and Harry Potter’s godfather. Yes, you got that right – we’re talking about none other than Gary Oldman.
Over the years, Gary Oldman has delivered spellbinding performances in films and series like The Contender, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Mank, and Slow Horses, to name a few. But the only role (so far) that earned him the Best Actor Oscar is his portrayal of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the critically acclaimed WWII drama Darkest Hour.

Slow Horses season 5, which begins on Sept. 24, promises to be a highlight of the television calendar this year, but fans of the show are in for a treat in 2026 and 2027, too: Slow Horses has just been renewed for season 7 before its fifth has even aired.
Starring veteran actor Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, and Kristin Scott Thomas among many others, Slow Horses is a British drama about failed MI5 spies being forced to work boring desk jobs, overseen by Jackson Lamb (Oldman). Of course, that would make for boring viewing (and reading), so things have been more complicated and dangerous than that over the course of the four currently-aired seasons.

Gary Oldman, the Hollywood legend who starred in films like Mank, The Fifth Element, and The Dark Knight trilogy, delivered one of his best performances ever when he played Count Vlad in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Oldman's Dracula was a game-changer in the vampire genre, as the actor fully embodied a monster suffering for love. It didn't matter if he was wearing heavy makeup, or playing the handsome Count that Mina Harker falls in love with, you understood that vampire's tragic story. It was all the work of the actor, who was convinced he had to be in the film after reading one line of the script.

Gary Oldman reveals his thoughts on actors from the Harry Potter movies returning for the series, along with which character he would have liked to play. Oldman previously played Sirius Black, making his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. HBO's Harry Potter show has already cast many key characters, including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, and Rubeus Hagrid. Filming for season 1, which is based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, is set to begin this summer.
While speaking with Variety, Oldman shares that he would have liked to play Dumbledore and joked about how, as he grows older, he is getting closer to the right age to play the iconic wizard. As for whether the HBO series will cast any actors from the movie, Oldman says that he does not think the show will "go anywhere near people connected to the original.

When Gary Oldman was a "Gary Young-man," the actor starred in various roles, mainly as a villain. Although the characters were memorable, Oldman revealed in an interview with Variety that he was tired of being typecast despite the fact that these roles were fun to play. Fortunately, he eventually made a shift in his later acting roles, being able to play the hero or someone on the side of good, with the most recent example being as Jackson Lamb in the Apple TV+ series, Slow Horses.
During his appearance in "Does Sir Gary Oldman Know His Lines?" Oldman shared his thoughts about being Hollywood's go-to person to play the villain. Unfortunately, he became tired of being typecast and shifted his career to play other types of characters. Gary Oldman is detailing how his career choices got “old” fast. The Oscar winner told Variety that he was “typecast” to play villains for years, ranging from “The Fifth Element” to “Lost in Space” and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” not to mention “True Romance” and “Hannibal.”
“I got sort of typecast for a while,” Oldman said. “I became kind of like the poster boy for the ‘rent-a-villain.’ Sort of, ‘Oh, we need a villain and we’ll get Gary.’ I don’t know how that happened, but it happened. And it was fun for a while, but eventually, I just put a stop to it. It got a little old. But they are fun to play.”
Oldman continued, “This particularly, like ‘The Fifth Element,’ much like ‘Lost in Space,’ they’re comic villains. [‘Lost in Space’] was fun, great cast. I thought the story, it was a lot to put in.

Gary Oldman, the Academy Award-winning actor famous for films like Darkest Hour, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Fifth Element, had a supporting but memorable role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. In the three entries based on the DC superhero Batman, Oldman played Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. As iconic as the character is now, it wasn't exactly an easy job for the actor because he was going through some personal issues when he made the first film, Batman Begins. He was inspired by Nolan's direction, but surprisingly, it was also jet lag that made Gordon the strong dramatic force standing between Batman and the chaotic city.

Slow Horsesstar and Academy Award winner Gary Oldman responds to being knighted by King Charles.
Speaking to Deadline, Oldman opened up about being knighted during King Charles' Birthday Honours on Friday, June 13. "It's actually sort of mind-boggling. I’m gobsmacked," Oldman said. In an official statement Oldman released alongside the news of his knighthood, the star wrote, "To be included in the long lineage of extraordinary actors, artists, and others who hold this title fills me with indescribable humility and pride. It is emotional, humbling and flattering all at the same time to be recognized amongst them."
Oldman went on to explain that only those closest to him had any idea about his impending knighthood prior to the announcement of the ceremony. He noted that his longtime business partner and manager, Douglas Urbanski, has already begun adding the "Sir" prefix to his name. Oldman went on to discuss how his...

Gary Oldman's career has included a number of critically acclaimed films, like 1992's Dracula, 2011's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and 2017's Darkest Hour. Aside from them, he also played Sirius Black in Harry Potter.
Oldman made his debut in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He further reprised his role briefly in the two follow-ups, 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with a short cameo in the final entry, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2. Although his character was a Slytherin, the actor revealed during a chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he's a Hufflepuff.
Asked whether he had ever used a quiz that sorts him into a Hogwarts House, and which House he'd be, the Oscar-winning actor didn't seem to remember the house system too well. "If I ever what?" he asked in return.

Wes Anderson is, without a doubt, one of the most distinctive, unmistakable auteurs of contemporary cinema. From the meticulous symmetry of his framing to the carefully curated color palettes and the almost melancholic tone of his ironic humor, everything about his style screams his name. Films like Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) established a visual and narrative language that has inspired (and oversaturated) many imitators – yet none have managed to replicate it with the same precision. Even though his more recent work – like Asteroid City (2023) and The French Dispatch (2021) – left me somewhat indifferent, my curiosity to see each new project remains intact. The Phoenician Scheme doesn’t change the writer-director’s style in the slightest, but it strikes a more accessible balance between his elaborate aesthetics and a straightforward narrative.
Written and directed by Anderson himself, The Phoenician Scheme tells the story of Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro...

Apple TV+ has been releasing some great stuff lately, which includes Gary Oldman’s Slow Horses. An espionage thriller like no other, the series strips apart all the glitz and glamor of spy work and depicts what real intelligence gathering looks like, with a leading man like no other. This is Oldman at his best and his rawest self.
Despite showcasing a loss of $1 billion, the streamer is investing in more content, especially its long-form ones. With the success of the comedy Ted Lasso, which was arguably its best, and the thriller Severance, Apple TV+ might be a fierce competitor in the market. Gary Oldman’s Slow Horses might just give it a huge push.

Bryan Cranston isn’t slowing down any time soon, most recently reuniting with Wes Anderson for “The Phoenician Scheme,” their latest collaboration following “Asteroid City” in 2023 and “Isle of Dogs” in 2018. In Anderson’s latest, he plays Reagan, the brother of Tom Hanks’ character. We caught up with the actor at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, May 28.
Amid his busy schedule, he will soon return to the “Malcolm in the Middle” reboot, reuniting with original cast members Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield. “Seeing the family was the best part,” he told IndieWire about returning to the series, which ran for 151 episodes across seven seasons from 2000 to 2006.
“It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and each person,” he said. “All the boys were around the same age, now, that I was when I started 25 years ago.

Joe Wright’s buzzy eight-part drama series “Mussolini: Son of the Century” has finally found a home, as Mubi will be distributing the show on its streaming service later this year. The global distributor and production company has acquired the North American rights for the series, which premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival; Mubi will also handle the release of the series in Latin America, Belgium, Luxembourg, Turkey, India, and New Zealand in a multi-territory deal with Fremantle.
“Mussolini: Son of the Century” was adapted from Antonio Scurati’s bestselling trilogy of the same name, and charts the rise of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini as he served as Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943. Luca Marinelli portrays the infamous ruler.
“Pride & Prejudice,” “Darkest Hour,” and “Cyrano” director Wright makes his return to TV more than 20 years after helming 2003 BBC One series “Charles II: The Power and the Passion.

After A24 released the first trailer for The Smashing Machine with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it didn’t take long for awards pundits and journalists to start speculating about its future as an Oscar player. Truth be told, Johnson has been considered a potential Best Actor nominee for months, with only a still photo of his transformation into UFC fighter Mark Kerr in his war chest.
However, now that The Smashing Machine trailer has arrived, it seems fair, even at this early stage in the calendar, with the movie still months from its debut, to wonder aloud whether Johnson could leap from popcorn star and beloved WWE wrestler to Academy Award nominee.

Dwayne Johnson is taking a prestige swing in the new A24 drama “The Smashing Machine,” and the first trailer for the film shows the blockbuster movie star conjuring a performance of a very different sort.
Johnson plays UFC legend Mark Kerr in the biographical drama, which charts the up-and-down career of the mixed martial arts fighter during the no-holds-barred era of the UFC alongside his girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.
The film is written and directed by Benny Safdie, one half of the Safdie Brothers directing duo, who gained acclaim with their gritty, stress-inducing films “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.”
The movie also marks something of a pivot for Johnson, whose career was built on positioning himself as a movie star and who has almost exclusively played heroes for the last decade. He appears to be putting in the work — the performance is somewhat transformative, with Johnson even donning an accent.

In the summer of 2017, Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis surprised Hollywood, London and the entire entertainment world when he revealed that he retired from acting and would make no more films. His final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" (2017) brought Day-Lewis his sixth Oscar nomination, his eighth Golden Globe nom and his seventh BAFTA bid (losing all three to Gary Oldman for "Darkest Hour").
One of the most respected actors of his generation, Day-Lewis is the only man who has won three Oscars for Best Actor. Those victories were for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). In fact he is one of only three men to win acting Oscars three times; the others are Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson. In addition, he has won two Best Actor awards each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

There are actors and then there’s Gary Oldman, a one-of-a-kind performer who doesn’t play around with his roles as he disappears into them. Whether it be Count Dracula or Winston Churchill, Oldman doesn’t miss!
He’s known for perfecting dialects and mannerisms and undergoing full-body transformations to play a character. The man is a chameleon and a master of his art, but there’s something simple and universally funny that once brought tears to his eyes out of laughter — fart jokes.

How far is too far when it comes to becoming a character? In the world of Hollywood, method acting is a way some actors prepare for a role by completely embodying the character in real life. Sometimes they dress like them, talk like them, and even act like them when they’re not filming.
Some even try to go through the same experiences their characters had – whether it’s living in a certain place or making big changes to how they look or live. This type of acting has led to some amazing performances that feel real and authentic.
But there’s a downside to this as well. While it may help actors connect with the roles they’re playing more often than not, it can get out of control. Fans still debate whether it’s really worth the emotional and physical cost that comes with it.

Just days after The Pitt's first season hung up its stethoscope, Noah Wyle's Emmy odds continue to rise.
The Best Actor contender, who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, received rave reviews for the storyline in which he had a mental breakdown after losing yet another patient while working an all-day shift. One month ago, Wyle ranked in fifth place to win Best Drama Actor among the Gold Derby odds, but buoyed by positive word-of-mouth for his performance on The Pitt, he's now in the No. 2 position to claim his first career statuette. He previously received five supporting Emmy bids for ER (1995-99).
The only person standing in Wyle's way, according to the Gold Derby predictions, is Severance star Adam Scott. Lest we forget, Scott also received a goat-load of kudos following the finale of his show, particularly for the scene in which the "innie" and "outie" versions of his character,...

Slow Horses is saddled up and ready to get back in the Emmys race.
Gold Derby has confirmed that the Apple TV+ drama is submitting nine different actors for its fourth season.
Gary Oldman, who plays the unkempt, flatulent head of the Slough House, Jackson Lamb, will be submitted in Best Drama Actor. The Oscar winner (Darkest Hour) was nominated in this category last year for Season 3 and earned one prior Emmy bid in 2001 for his guest appearance on Friends.
Two more past nominees will be submitted in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category: Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, a former M15 agent exiled to the Slough House; and Jonathan Pryce — who competed in the guest category last year — as David Cartwright, a retired M15 officer and River's grandfather. They'll be joined on the ballot by Christopher Chung as computer whiz Roddy Ho and Kadiff Kirwan as the dearly departed Marcus Longridge.

Léon: The Professionalstar Gary Oldman reveals that his iconic "Everyone!" line delivery was never intended to make the final cut of the movie. Released in 1994, director Luc Besson's action thriller stars Jean Reno as Léon, an assassin who takes the 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman) under his wing after her family is murdered. Oldman plays Léon: The Professional's main villain, Stansfield, a corrupt and violent DEA agent. One of the most iconic lines of Oldman's career comes when he demands that a subordinate bring him "everyone" as backup before he then repeats the word in an exaggerated yell.
During a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oldman reveals that his shouting delivery of the word "everyone" was actually intended as a joke for Besson. The actor recalls wanting to make the director laugh on one particular take, but then the moment ended up in the final cut of the movie.

Slow Horses star Gary Oldman explains how he ended up in the hit series, and it involved wanting a change from some of his movie roles. Based on the book series by Mick Herron, the Apple TV+ espionage show premiered in 2022, chronicling the misadventures of a team of misfit MI5 agents. Oldman leads the Slow Horses cast as Jackson Lamb, the head of the Slough House division who is known for the unique combination of a slovenly demeanor and appearance combined with the sharp tactical mind of a veteran spy.
During a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oldman tells the story of how Slow Horses "fell from the sky" and proved to be everything he wanted in a role. It is a testament to his acting ability that it was years before I realized that Gary Oldman is British. With an ability to nail accents, the dedication to drastically change his appearance and the talent to convey the full spectrum of emotions, Oldman is one of the most eclectic and underrated actors of our time.
Born March 21, 1958, in London, Oldman began his acting career on the British stage in 1979, and made his film debut in "Remembrance" in 1982. In 1984, he reluctantly accepted the role of punk rocker Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy," a performance which garnered him critical acclaim and launched a diverse and successful career that has spanned almost four decades, and includes everything from small indie films to blockbuster franchises.

How Was Gary Oldman Convinced That Christopher Nolan Is A Great Director? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Gary Oldman is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. With a career spanning decades, he has showcased remarkable versatility, earning critical acclaim for roles in films like Sid and Nancy (1986), Leon: The Professional (1994), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), and Darkest Hour (2017), which won him an Academy Award for Best Actor. However, to a new generation of filmgoers, Oldman is fondly known for playing Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
In Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Oldman portrayed Gotham’s most honorable cop, rising through the ranks to become police commissioner. His profoundly emotional performance was a key anchor in Nolan’s grounded take on the Batman mythos. While Oldman has worked with some of the greatest filmmakers in the industry, a...

Gary Oldman couldn’t contain his laughter when Stephen Colbert showed him clips of his most famous movies enhanced with “that Jackson Lamb quality” — uncontrolled flatulence, a reference to Oldman’s slovenly spy on “Slow Horses.”
The clips included Oldman apparently passing gas as he welcomes Keanu Reeves to his castle in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” as he speaks to Daniel Radcliffe in one of the “Harry Potter” movies and more.
Oldman exclaimed, “That’s really a hoot!” when one cleverly edited scene from “Darkest Hour” shows a supporting actor looking askance at Oldman’s Winston Churchill as he apparently lets one rip. “That’s fantastic!” he said.
After the last clip, which now has his villain from “Air Force One” farting as Harrison Ford punches him and says, “Get off my plane,” Oldman was in tears from laughing so hard.
Watch the fart-filled segment in the embedded Instagram post below:...

With its near sweep at the Oscars on Sunday night, five-time Academy Award winner Anora entered the history books as one of the last decade’s most decorated Best Picture winners. In hindsight, the result seemed obvious: Of course, the Best Picture winner would also take every other category in which it was win-competitive. However, there are always several lessons to take away from each awards season, and this one — mainly because of its unpredictability — was no different. Ahead are the five lessons to remember when predicting next year’s awards season.
It’s Always Oscar Season
Last year, the famously cantankerous actor Brian Cox lambasted Hollywood because of its focus on what he deemed “Oscar season” while lamenting the fact that his 2017 biopic Churchill (released in June) was overtaken in the conversation by the Oscar-winning Darkest Hour (released in November) that same year.

According to Deadline, Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran will help lead Charlie Kaufman’s next film, Later the War, which he will write and direct, based on the short story Debby’s Dream House by Iddo Gefen.
Taken from Gefen’s literary collection Jerusalem Beach, the author’s short story follows a man who manufactures dreams for people but ultimately begins creating nightmares for them. Whether Kaufman’s version will adapt the story to its original form is unknown. Additionally, since it’s a short story, he’s bound to add new details. Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum will produce via Waypoint Entertainment, with Sarah Green of Brace Productions and Steven Demmler.

M. Son of the Century, which premieres on Sky in the U.K. on Feb. 4, covers a span of time in the life of Benito Mussolini, the founder of fascism. It ranges from his early years, when he was still a journalist who had just left the Socialist Party, to the murder, by Mussolini’s fascist forces, of socialist politician Giacomo Matteotti, a killing that helped pave his rise to power. Italian star Luca Marinelli (The Old Guard, The Eight Mountains) embodies the infamous populist in the new series, adapted by screenwriters Stefano Bises and Davide Serino from Antonio Scurati’s historical novel. British filmmaker Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour), who knows his way around a historical epic, directs.
The dark and handsome Marinelli underwent a complete transformation, to play the brutish, balding Mussolini. He is unrecognizable. Throughout the 8-episode series, the Italian actor constantly breaks the fourth wall, speaking directly to the audience.

Period pieces that are able to accurately depict real events, especially events that had such a profound impact on the world, can create some of the most impactful and interesting movies of all time.
