Trying to find historical romances on cable can be a bit of an exhausting affair. These shows can be few and far between, and signing up for a pay-tv package that costs $80 per month or more to try and find them is an inefficient process, at best. On-demand streaming services are much better for fans who love historical romances and want to watch on their own schedule, and I’ve assembled a bundle of three services below that will bring you a great lineup of such titles for just $26 per month.

As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

Maggie Greenwald’s romantic drama “Sophie and the Rising Sun” premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and just over one year later, it will be released in select theaters nationwide. Based on the Augusta Trobaugh novel by the same name, the film follows the dramatic story of interracial lovers swept up in the fervor of World War II that has hit Salty Creek, South Carolina. Salty Creek native Sophie Willis (Julianne Nicholson) falls for the mysterious stranger Mr. Grover Ohta (Takashi Yamaguchi), but as their secret relationship evolves, the war escalates and bigotry threatens Ohta’s life. The film co-stars Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), Lorraine Toussaint (“Selma”), Diane Ladd (“Chinatown”), Joel Murray (“Mad Men”) and more. Watch an exclusive clip below.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, many Japanese-Americans faced extreme prejudice in their own neighborhoods and were routinely made to feel unsafe. The new film “Sophie and the Rising Sun,” based on the 2001 novel Augusta Trobaugh by the same name, follows a romance between Sophie Willis (Julianne Nicholson), a native of Salty Creek, South Carolina, and the mysterious wounded stranger Mr. Ohta (Takashi Yamaguchi). As their secret relationship evolves, the war escalates and soon bigotry and violence sweep through the town, but just then Sophie and her two compatriot risk their lives to protect Ohta. The film co-stars Character Margo Martindale (“The Hours”), Lorraine Toussaint (“Selma”), Diane Ladd (“Chinatown”), Joel Murray (“Mad Men”) and more. Watch an exclusive trailer below.

– Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. rights to the drama thriller “All I See Is You,” directed by Marc Forster and starring Blake Lively and Jason Clarke. They will release the film nationwide August 4, 2017. It world-premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

The film “is the story of a blind woman (Blake Lively) and her husband (Jason Clarke). When her sight unexpectedly returns, she begins to discover the previously unseen and disturbing details about themselves, their marriage and their lives.”

– A24 has acquired North American rights to Josh and Benny Safdie’s Robert Pattinson-starring “Good Time.” The “film follows a bank robber’s race to evade the police dragnet that threatens to send him behind bars.

The producer of Dear White People (pictured) and In The Cut delivered words of encouragement in her keynote address at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles at the weekend.

“I thought there was something wrong with me and I was having such a hard time making it,” said Brown on Sunday as she reflected on early efforts to break into the business. “I thought, ‘Am I a fraud?’ And then the big one – ‘Do I deserve this?’ That mental mind-fuck is exhausting. It kept me ‘apart from’, instead of ‘a part of.’”

Earlier in her address, Brown told attendees at the DGA Theater, “You have a story to tell that’s worthy. You have experience to share. You have a valid point of view and you should know this.”

Sundance programmers have unveiled what is a jaw-dropping, savoury Premieres line-up. With names such as Asif Kapadia (Ali & Nino), Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women), Joshua Marston (Complete Unknown), Ira Sachs (Little Men), Whit Stillman (Love & Friendship), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea), Todd Solondz (Wiener-Dog) and James Schamus’ directorial debut (Indignation), the 2016 edition could be considered a “gold” level edition that in the decade plus years we’ve been covering the fest easily rivals what we might find in the Main Comp in Cannes later that year.
