David St. John, a TV producer who worked on shows including “America’s Next Top Model,” died Dec. 19 of pancreatic cancer in Seattle. He was 56.

St. John, whose death was only recently announced, started his career at MTV on the series “Taildaters,” rising from assistant to story producer. He moved on to “America’s Next Top Model,” co-executive producing more than 100 episodes of the hit reality show.

St. John was passionate about highlighting underrepresented communities, particularly while working on “I Am Jazz,” which followed transgender teen Jazz Jennings and earned a GLAAD Media Award. He went on to work on “The Ts Madison Experience.”

His final project, TLC’s “Jay & Pamela,” followed an engaged couple born with osteogenesis imperfecta.

“To be in David St. John’s orbit meant that you were witness to an astonishingly bright light… all the time,” said Drew Tappon, Head of Unscripted Development, Programming & Specials at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

St. John was the executive producer of TLC’s I Am Jazz for its entire 2015-2020 run, a series that followed the journey of transgender teen Jazz Jennings and won a GLAAD Media Award. In 2021 he exec produced The Ts Madison Experience, a reality series chronicling the career of Black, trans woman talk show host Ts Madison.

St. John launched his career as an assistant at MTV, moving up to story producer on the network’s 2002 series Taildaters. In 2007 he became a supervising producer on America’s Next Top Model and would co-exec produce more than 100 episodes of the Tyra Banks competition series.

Transgender TV star Jazz Jennings celebrated losing 100 pounds over the past two years.

Jennings, 23, who stars in the TLC series I Am Jazz, revealed the milestone on Instagram. The post showed a video of her exercise program, including running, kettlebell exercises and wall sits.

Jennings first gained public attention as a young transgender child, as one of the youngest people to be publicly identified as transgender.

Nominations for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced on Wednesday, with more than 300 individual nominees represented across dozens of categories.

“At a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack by false narratives and misinformation … this year’s nominees powerfully reflect the realities of LGBTQ existence today, in our communities and around the globe,” GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “The stakes have never been higher to maintain the progress of LGBTQ visibility and representation across all media, from film, television, music, journalism, publishing and more.”

Ariana Grande, Guillermo del Toro, Padma Lakshmi, Roxane Gay, Gabrielle Union, Sandra Cisneros, Amanda Gorman, Margaret Cho and Ron Perlman are among the signatories of an open letter calling on creative communities in Hollywood and beyond to leverage their voices to stop book bans.

Upwards of 175 actors, musicians, authors, comedians, reality stars, models, media personalities, academics, activists and more have signed the open letter spearheaded by Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton and published Tuesday via public advocacy organization and political action committee MoveOn Political Action.

Amplify Pictures, the independent television studio behind HBO’s Emmy-winning “100 Foot Wave,” has made a pair of hires. It has tapped Rachel Eggebeen as its chief content officer and Colin King Miller as its chief operating officer. The veteran executives will take founding partnership roles alongside Amplify Pictures CEO Joe Lewis.

“It’s a time of expansion,” Lewis told Variety in an interview. “We’re growing our team and becoming more global.”

At the same time, Amplify has sold a minority stake to Great Mountain Partners. It is understood that the deal values Amplify at $50 million. June marks Pride Month, and the history and achievements of LGBTQ communities will be celebrated across the TV landscape with series and specials, including live streaming coverage of Pride parades in Los Angeles and New York.

In addition to a slew of new content tied to Pride month, older titles centered on queer people and characters will become newly available in June. For one, after being out of the streaming world for about six months, all six seasons of “Glee” will debut on Hulu and Disney+ on June 1. Also going to Hulu are Season 1 and 2 of the Starz drama “Vida” on June 7 and the coming-of-age romance film “Wildhood” on June 24. GLAAD today announced the nominees in 30 categories for its 33rd Annual Media Awards.

In a flip-flip of last year’s top leaders, the combined HBO/HBO Max scored the most nominations of any network with 19, followed by Netflix with 17. That’s a lot closer than last year, when Netflix ran away with 26 noms, while HBO was a distant second with nine.

Streaming services saw a total of 63 nominations, with cable receiving 39 and broadcast networks receiving 17. Hulu received seven nominations, while ABC, MSNBC and Peacock all saw four. In the Spanish-language categories, Univision and Telemundo both received two nominations.

I’m so proud to bring you our annual Pride Issue, which highlights the joys and struggles of trans youth. Our charismatic cover subject, 20-year-old Jazz Jennings, made headlines in 2007 at age 6 when she gave a nationally televised interview to Barbara Walters about identifying as a girl. That led to Jennings’ popularity as a TV personality and YouTube sensation and her becoming a vital role model for so many in the trans community.

“It’s not hyperbolic to say that Jazz has actually saved lives,” says GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis. “She’s shown trans youth that you can be happy, healthy and accepted. And in the trans community, representation matters greatly. So many trans youth are at risk and have contemplated or attempted suicide, so seeing someone like Jazz is a bright light for them.”

In 2007, six-year-old Jazz Jennings went on national television to tell Barbara Walters the same thing she’d been telling her parents, siblings and anyone else who would listen: She was, despite her birth certificate’s insistence otherwise, a girl.

Shy and sweet, Jennings answered Walters’ probing questions with the clarity and patience of someone used to explaining herself over and over again. “She was so charismatic, so charming and so clearly herself,” Laverne Cox says of first seeing that “20/20” interview. “Her humanity was so on display that you couldn’t deny she had the right to be who she was.” It was a watershed moment for transgender visibility in media, not least because it made Jennings one of the youngest documented trans people to speak her truth for millions of viewers to hear.

Starring trans activist Jazz Jennings, TLC’s reality series premiered in 2015 as a 14 year-old Jennings prepared to go to high school, and wrapped its sixth season in March 2020 with her graduation as valedictorian. Over the years, viewers have watched Jennings, who became the youngest trans child on television after her 2007 “20/20” interview with Barbara Walters, deal with school, sports, dating and her health as she moved forward with her transition.

Season 6 saw Jennings helping a friend raise money for her gender confirmation surgery, manage her anxiety, and try to decide between attending Pomona College or Harvard University after high school. After a two-year break in filming, the longest in the show’s history, production on the seventh season will begin this summer in South Florida where Jennings currently lives with her family.

The GLAAD Media Awards winners were announced on Thursday, with “Booksmart” and “Pose” taking home the top honors.

The winners were announced in a virtual ceremony hosted by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere. The event streamed on GLAAD’s Facebook and YouTube accounts, with a taped version set to air on Logo on Monday. Performers included Chloe x Halle, Shea Diamond and Ben Platt.

Among the winners highlighted on the stream were “Old Town Road” singer Lil Nas X, who took home the award for Outstanding Music Artist; the cast and producers of “Pose” and “Schitt’s Creek,” which won the top awards for drama and comedy series, respectively; “Booksmart,” which won Outstanding Film – Wide Release; and Rachel Maddow, who received the award for Outstanding TV Journalism Segment for her one-on-one interview with Pete Buttigieg.

GLAAD has announced the nominees for the 31st GLAAD Media Awards, honoring Lgbtq representation in film, television, news and entertainment in 2019.

Netflix received the most nominations of any network with 15 nominees, followed by HBO with eight and ABC, CBS and NBC each with four. New streaming services Apple+ and Disney+ earned their first ever nominations with Dickinson and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, respectively.

The nominations for the 31st GLAAD Media Awards were announced Wednesday morning, and there are many first-time contenders.

HBO's Watchmen and Euphoria are joined by The CW's freshly renewed Batwoman among the first-time contenders.

Netflix leads the TV categories with 15 total nominations, with Sex Education and Dear White People among the shows represented.

HBO comes in second place with 8 total nods, including Deadwood: The Movie and Mrs. Fletcher also netting nominations.

New streaming services Disney+ and Apple TV+ are also represented with nods for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Dickinson.

The GLAAD Media Awards will be held Thursday, March 19 (in Los Angeles) and Thursday, April 16 (in New York).

The procedure was documented on “I Am Jazz” earlier this year but for Jennings, it is coming up on a year since the surgery. Almost a year later, she says she is “feeling great.” Speaking further on her emotional experience, she adds, “The surgery really brought me a great sense of peace because I finally had that mind-body alignment that I had been looking for my entire life. TLC has renewed “I Am Jazz” for Season 6, which will air in 2020.

The GLAAD Award-winning reality series, which follows transgender teen advocate Jazz Jennings as she navigates life’s ups and downs alongside her close-knit and supportive family, recently wrapped its highest-rated season among women both 18-49 and 25-54. Its per-episode average of 1.4 million total viewers was the second-largest audience in series history.
