There’s something very wrong with the new sitter.
Michael Thelin’s Emelie is now streaming on Screambox, which is great news because it’s a damn good horror film that flew pretty far under the radar when it was released in 2015.
Written by Rich Herbeck and directed by Thelin, Emelie stars Sarah Bolger as the title character, a young woman who shows up at a couple’s home and poses as Anna, the last-minute replacement babysitter they’ve never so much as seen a picture of. Though “Anna” at first seems like the perfect babysitter, allowing the kids to do things their parents would never allow them to do, the night quickly takes a turn for the worse when she makes them play a series of increasingly disturbing games.

First, the criminally underseen babysitter thriller Emelie, a taut thriller that will definitely surprise many of you.
I was blown away by Michael Thelin‘s debut feature which is highlighted by star Sarah Bolger, who delivers a chilling performance that would make any parent check twice before hiring a new babysitter.
In the film… “After their regular babysitter Maggie can’t make it, the Thompson family turns to her friend Anna to supervise their children while the parents celebrate their anniversary. At first, Anna seems like a dream come true to the kids, allowing them to eat extra cookies and play with things that are usually off-limits. Still, as her behavior becomes increasingly odd,...

Dark Sky Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Lola, the science fiction drama from writer-director Andrew Legge and starring Stefanie Martini (Prime Suspect 73, The Last Kingdom) and Emma Appleton (The Witcher, Pistol). The film will be released in early August.
Giles Edwards, head of development and acquisitions at Dark Sky Films, is currently on the ground in Cannes and negotiated the distribution agreement with Yana Georgieva, head of sales for Bankside Films.
Lola is set in 1940 in England, where enterprising sisters Thomasina “Thom” Hanbury (Appleton) and Martha “Mars” Hanbury (Martini) have built a machine, Lola, that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. The device gives them an exciting preview of the world to come, including music by the likes of David Bowie and the Kinks. But with World War II escalating, the sisters decide to use the machine as a weapon of intelligence, with world-altering consequences.

In horror, the babysitter is typically the character who protects her young ward from madmen and other dangers, but Dorothy Mills completely subverts the concept; Agnès Merlet’s 2008 film sees a disturbed sitter as the main threat to a child’s safety. This Irish chiller, however, upholds other genre traditions, including sending a city dweller to a small town where the people are ruled by their unusual customs, xenophobia and extreme faith. As the heedless outsider learns more about the infamous title character and the other residents, she quickly realizes this will not be an open-and-shut case of child abuse.
Dorothy Mills was written by Merlet and Juliette Sales, and this bleak story was originally set in Scotland before ultimately relocating to Ireland. This rural “fish out of water” mystery is in the vein of The Wicker Man, minus the folk-horror element, but there’s still something weird going on...

In 2015 it was announced that Frightfest were set to bring us, under a “Frightfest Presents” banner, some of the horrific delights of their Glasgow and London festivals on DVD and VOD thanks to a partnership with Icon Film Distribution. And whilst that partnership did garner a number of releases – including the likes of Some Kind of Hate, Emelie, Night of the Living Deb and The Sand – the label went dark soon after, with not only the two-year deal coming to an end, but also likely due to the fact that Frightfest partner Icon had some financial woes in 2017, eventually been sold to Kaleidoscope in March of this year.

Babysitters in horror films and suspense thrillers are typically fated to spend their time at the mercy of a sadistic killer — think Halloween or When a Stranger Calls — but once in a while these young ladies get the chance to switch things up a bit and become the evil threat themselves. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The Guardian are probably two of the most well-known, but the sub-genre gets a youthful injection this week with Emelie. Dan and Joyce are the happy parents of three little kids, but they’re in desperate need of a break. Their night out on the town is threatened when their regular babysitter falls ill, but young Anna comes highly recommended so their plans move forward. What they don’t know is that Anna has been abducted by another young woman and her male friend, so when Dan picks up the babysitter it’s not Anna who he invites into...

Emelie is physiologically disturbed — she’s demented, she’s enraged, she’s the possessed offspring of a fire-breathing dragon and Saoirse Ronan. She’s also "Anna" (a stoic, maniacal Sarah Bolger), a babysitter operating with a stolen identity for the sake of a fulfilling her bizarre quest. Her presence becomes a nightmare, especially for the three children held captive by her existential angst. Anna lectures the children about “pretending,” and how it’s a super power — but only when used in accordance with her direction — and that's not to mention her Sartre-approved affirmations concerning the inevitability of death. If you were thinking of leaving your children at home anytime soon, I wouldn’t watch “Emelie” beforehand. Director Michael Thelin balances folklore with a picturesque naturalism in his bewitching debut feature, thanks to the looming, eerie presence of his antagonist. It’s a fractured fairy tale with black humor (just...

It begins with the abduction of a girl. The scene is quiet and innocuous until it isn’t—a car rolling up to a young girl to ask for directions as children play in the background. The driver says, “Are you Anna?” before a man grabs her and shoves her in the car the instant she says, “Yes.” We watch as though a voyeur behind the trees, helpless to do anything but wait to see what happens while a boy on his bike (Dante Hoagland‘s Howie) rides into frame for the camera to follow home. These suburbs are small so his destination just happens to be next door to the house we’re about to spend the night within. That family’s new babysitter is also named Anna and suddenly we realize what’s gone wrong.

If you've seen the trailer and/or watched the HitFix-exclusive clip (above) from Michael Thelin's forthcoming horror/thriller Emelie, you're aware that Sarah Bolger's character may well be the most deranged babysitter in cinema history. In advance of the film's release in limited theaters and on VOD today, I spoke with Thelin about how the sweet-faced Bolger -- who you may remember as one of the young sisters in Jim Sheridan's 2003 tearjerker In America -- was so perfect for the role, working with kid actors in a scene that involves a homemade sex tape, and why the film may feature the single greatest moment of hamster acting in all of history. Here are all the highlights from the interview. Emelie is out in theaters and on VOD today. Bolger got one key thing about the character that other actresses didn't. "We saw a lot of girls. And...

As their parents head out for a date in the city, the three young Thompson children immediately take to their new babysitter, Anna (Sarah Bolger, Into the Badlands, Once Upon a Time), who seems like a dream come true: she’s sweet, fun, and lets them do things that break all of their parents’ rules. But as Anna’s interactions with them take on a more sinister tone, the kids realize that their caretaker...

Upon breaking onto the scene via last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, all had gone quiet for Michael Thelin’s psychological thriller, Emelie – that is, until today.
In anticipation of the film’s premiere later this week, Entertainment Weekly has conjured up an haunting new clip for Thelin’s directorial debut, thrusting Irish actress Sarah Bolger (Once Upon a Time) into the role of Anna. As a long-time friend of the Thompsons, Anna wilfully agrees to babysit their three children as the parents set about celebrating their anniversary, although things take a turn for the worse when Bolger’s lead is left alone in the company of the kids.
As the definition of the nuclear American family – white picket fence and all – there’s nothing strange or startling about the Thompsons; rather, it’s Bolger’s Anna that is the real menace fuelling Emelie. It’s a fascinating and layered...

In the upcoming horror-thriller film Emelie, Once Upon a Time and Spiderwick Chronicles star Sarah Bolger takes a turn for the dark as Anna, a sweet-faced babysitter who begins to exhibit disturbing behavior while looking after three young children (Joshua Rush, Thomas Bair and Carly Adams) during their parents' night out. In this HitFix-exclusive clip (embedded above and below), an initially innocent photo session takes a macabre left turn, after which you will be silently imploring Anna's young charges to get the hell out of Dodge. Directed by Michael Thelin, Emelie is slated for release in theaters and On Demand on March 4.

When was the last time we saw an evil movie babysitter? I honestly can't recall. Has there ever been one? It's a great premise: innocent-looking young woman shows up at a typical suburban home to watch the kids for the night, parents leave, innocent-looking young woman turns into the babysitter from hell. It's a nice subversion of the old "babysitter gets stalked by a masked killer" trope made famous by Halloween, and indeed, in the upcoming horror film Emelie, Sarah Bolger's title character is no victim. Here's the trailer: That mouse in the snake terrarium bit...can't deal. Directed by Michael Thelin, Emelie is slated for release on March 4.

Something about this exclusive trailer for the indie horror "Emelie" will make parents and children alike squirm. Read More: Mpi Media Group Acquires Psychological Thriller 'Emelie' "Emelie" is about the worst babysitter imaginable. Played by Sarah Bolger ("Into the Badlands," "Once Upon a Time"), the character's end goal seems to be to destroy the innocence of the children she's babysitting, or to just destroy them altogether. Playing around with "the call is coming from inside the house" horror motif, director Michael Thelin seems to be taking a unique approach to this archetype. If the moments in the trailer are any indication, there are plenty of physiological disturbances in this one. When asked about his influences, Thelin told Indiewire exclusively, "I loved watching films ever since I can remember. My movie tastes have always been eclectic, but when it came to the thriller/horror genre I tended to gravitate.

Like every other horror movie trope, the bad babysitter isn't exactly new fodder but something about the trailer for Michael Thelin's feature film debut Emelie suggests that this might be better than your average horror movie by focusing more on the thriller and suspense angle of the story rather than the kills.
The set-up is pretty basic: a family's regular babysitter can't make the job so the family hire's the sitter's good friend to cover for the night. Everything seems to be going swimmingly, except for the fact that the babysitter seems to be hitting on the eldest son, until a game of hide-and-seek turns ugly and Emelie, the replacement sitter, seems to lose her mind.

Last weekend, as the weather began to turn crisp and cold, the ninth iteration of the Buffalo International Film Festival went off, to bigger crowds and bigger acclaim than ever before.
The Film Stage’s first-produced short film Strange Bird was lucky enough to be included in the line-up, premiering at the newly-restored North Park Theatre on Hertel Avenue in front of writer/director Perry Blackshear’s Diy-thriller They Look Like People, which won a Special Jury Award at the Slamdance Film Festival along with a slew of other accolades at several impressive fests.
It was a bittersweet year for the festival following the passing of its founder, Edward Summer, in November of 2014. An accomplished artist, writer and filmmaker, Summer was celebrated throughout this year’s proceedings, including a touching memorial during the fest’s opening night gala.

★★★★☆ Despite a third act change of tone, that plays out like a hybrid of Home Alone (1990) and The Shining (1980), there is still plenty to admire in Michael Thelin's debut movie. For much of its brisk eighty-two minutes running time, Emelie (2015) is a devilishly good thriller of notably transgressive bent, giving the slasher and home invasion formats a rare matriarchal focus. However, once it has to commit to the familiar trope of the plucky protagonist fighting back against the unwelcome intruder, it loses something vital; the edge and suspense evaporates into a formulaic duke out, and certain generic obligations are dutifully fulfilled.

Whether it’s trashing the house, raiding the fridge or having guests over partaking in substances and acts that they shouldn’t really be doing, we have all heard those babysitter horror stories. Well, this particular story well and truly takes the cake. When their original babysitter can’t make it, the Thompson’s depend on her friend Anna (Sarah Bolger, The Lazarus Effect) to look after their children as they celebrate their anniversary. The thing is, Anna isn’t who she says she is. Her real name is Emilie and she’s going to give the Thompson’s and their children a night they will never forget. What starts off as innocent enough mischief turns in to a dark, cruel, emotionally and physically destroying series of events.

Though naturalistic in its style, Emelie can’t help but seem supernatural—a little like folklore. Maybe that’s part of accepting how someone designed to be a caregiver can be so insidious in intent, but it’s also that Sarah Bolger’s devious turn as the evil babysitter feels like a character out of a fairy tale or urban…

The Tribeca Film Festival began on Wednesday night with the premiere of Live From New York!, Bao Nguyen’s documentary about the history of Saturday Night Live. Although your humble film critic was unable to see that film, the festival will offer more than a hundred movies of various flavors from April 15-26, and in this critic’s opinion, the lineup in 2015 is stronger than any in the last five years. Starting today, this is your place to find a brief run-down of the films that played the festival the day before, either in public screenings or in pre-festival press screenings.
