Black Documentary Filmmakers Wrestle With ‘Revisiting History,’ ‘Disruption’: We Need to Tell Stories of Those ‘Who Didn’t Have the Voice Before’
Image
The disruptive power of the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements has shifted the conversation around storytelling about underrepresented and marginalized communities, even as the backlash in the U.S. and other countries has swung the pendulum to the (far) right, putting many of those gains at risk.

But while the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back Dei initiatives are the latest harbinger of a cultural correction that threatens to turn back the clock to a darker past, Black documentary filmmakers at the Joburg Film Festival said they’re looking to seize this moment to disrupt and rethink widely accepted historical narratives, especially around the Black experience.

“We’re having so many reckonings, and we’re really trying to contend with histories that have been presented to us, that we’re now saying, ‘We need to disrupt this,’” said the British filmmaker Eloïse King (“The Shadow Scholars”). “We need...

One True Loves Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of One True Loves includes a combination of blockbuster movie stars and Broadway talents in a story of three characters who unexpectedly find themselves in a complicated love triangle. Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Daisy Jones & the Six), the romantic drama follows a woman torn between her thought-dead husband and her new fiancé. It's like a gender-swapped remake of the Cary Grant and Irene Dunne classic My Favorite Wife, minus the screwball comedy antics, and One True Loves is similarly hinged on the appeal of its casting.

While not filled with household names, especially compared to previous movies directed by Andy Fickman (Playing With Fire), which were led by the likes of Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Bette Midler, the main and supporting cast of One True Loves consists of recognizable actors from some of the biggest entertainments of the past decade.

MCU Newcomer ‘Shang-Chi’ To Break Labor Day Records
Tim Roth, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Benedict Wong, Meng'er Zhang, Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Florian Munteanu in Shang-Chi et la Légende des Dix Anneaux (2021)
Brace yourself: the Labor Day weekend box office record is about to be broken. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it is the rare major film to release over the famously low-grossing holiday weekend, following in the footsteps of Tenet last year and continuing Marvel’s trend of extending the length of the summer movie season. The current record holder for the long weekend is the Halloween remake, which opened to $30.6 million in 2007. Shang-Chi should be able to top that without breaking a sweat, even though it will fall toward the lower end of openings for a Marvel film.

Shang-Chi, which is the only wide release of the weekend, takes the MCU into new territory, drawing from Asian culture and cinema and featuring a cast and director of Asian origin. The title character is a star-making role for Simu Liu,...

Grey's Anatomy: Kate Burton to Return as Meredith's Mother in Season 18

Even with Grey’s Anatomy‘s “dream beach” conceit now over, another of Meredith’s late loved ones will appear in the upcoming season.

She’ll first appear during the Sept. 30 premiere (ABC, 9/8c), but details aren’t available as to how Ellis will show up; she passed away in Season 3 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and most recently appeared to Meredith in a dream during the Season 15 installment “Blood and Water” in 2019.

The Best New TV Series That Arrived On Netflix This Week
Once upon a time, Netflix was simply a streaming service, which means it bought movies and TV shows from other companies and passed them to its subscribers. Then, when the streamer started making enough money, it began to finance its own productions to make content that was – now and always – exclusively available on its own platform.

That business model stuck around for quite a while and made the streamer lots of extra cash. But then coronavirus hit and as the global health crisis put a stop to moviemaking around the world, Netflix slowly reverted back to its original form as a simple video on demand service. For now, at least. This week, then, not unlike the weeks before it, brings a few delayed originals, and a ton of newly-acquired syndicated content.

Probably the biggest show that arrived on the streamer this week was the latest season of The Flash. Following the success of Arrow,...

Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 17 Review: And Dream of Sheep
It's the season of love, but it has also been the season of family.

It goes to show you love comes in various forms. We can debate all day about the 'ships sailing, but the familial aspect of this season is interesting as well.

Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 17 had the (possible) departures of Vincenzo and Helen, Maggie stepping into a part of her identity, the complex Towen family unit, and it teased the upcoming arrival of Jo's biological mother.

Let's start things off with la famiglia DeLuca. No shade intended but is that it for this storyline?!

Perhaps it is only the end of the innovative baby in a bag portion of the storyline. I was starting to get accustomed to creepy baby sheep in baggies, too.

As insane as Vincenzo's idea sounded, it was innovative and cutting edge, so the idea of the show exploring the study was promising.

Carina and Meredith are wary of Vincenzo DeLuca. Do you think he'll have a breakdown?! Why is Andrew willing to risk it to work with his father?

Rachelle: I think Vincenzo is going to have a breakdown. Carina knows him better than Andrew and can see the signs. I feel like nothing good can come of him being at Grey Sloan Memorial.

I think the reason Andrew is willing to risk it working with his father is because of his need to prove something to his father. Andrew...
