From The Prop, by Elena Gorfinkel and John David Rhodes, published by Fordham University Press, the first in its Cutaways series of small-format books guided by a single motif or formal device. Certain Women.Beth is a beleaguered young lawyer who drives four hours away from her regular job to teach education law in a small town called Belfry, Montana. In a scene set in a diner, Jamie, with no food of her own to distract her, watches as Beth eats a meal of burger and fries. Jamie, played by Lily Gladstone, is a ranch hand who has shown up for Beth’s evening class. Beth, played by Kristen Stewart, in this seemingly throwaway moment, performs a bit of prop-business both subtle and disarming in neo-neo-realist filmmaker Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women (2016). The scene begins with Beth having already sliced her burger in half. Beth takes a bite, then picks...

Mubi is expanding its global theatrical footprint, and it is hiring a seasoned indie film vet to lead the charge. Mubi has hired Arianna Bocco, the former president of IFC Films, to join the company as its SVP of Global Distribution, the company announced Tuesday, January 7.
Bocco spent 16 years at IFC Films, leaving in 2023 (she was elevated to the role of president in 2020) amid major changes to the indie distributor that resulted in a slew of executive departures.
In her new role, Bocco will lead the international distribution of Mubi’s titles, helping to expand its foreign footprint theatrically. Mark Boxer, who currently leads the U.S. distribution team and also worked with Bocco at IFC Films, will continue in that role. Some of the titles she’ll be working on to start include Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother.”

Most Trekkies know that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) kept a pet lionfish in a globe-shaped aquarium in his ready room. Only deep-cut Trekkies know, however, that the fish was named Livingston. Some have assumed it was named after Harold Livingston, the screenwriter of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," but the fish could also have been named after the Scottish football team, for all we know. No information has been given about Livingston the lionfish.
Indeed, no one knows if the fish was Picard's personal pet, or if lionfish were merely standard-issue in-office animals in Starfleet. It seems likely it was the former, as the latter seems too exploitative for the life-respecting Federation; no 24th-century bureaucracy would wrangle thousands of fish merely to install them as background critters in captains' ready-rooms.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Power Play", the crew of the Enterprise-d find themselves visiting the surface of a seemingly uninhabited moon from whence a distress call was emanating. Data (Brent Spiner), Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) are able to fly down in a shuttle, but violent energy storms prevent them from taking off again. They can only beam up once Chief O'Brien (Colm Meany) visits the surface and enhances their transporter pattern.
Just as they are prepping to return, however, they are all knocked unconscious by a bolt of energy, getting thrown to the ground. Data, Troi, and O'Brien are then eerily possessed by free-floating balls of energy that drift into their bodies from a cloud above. It isn't until later that those watching at home learn that the heroes have been taken over by the dead crew of a crashed ship,...

Love Lies Bleeding features a top-notch cast led by Kristen Stewart. The crime thriller's plot follows a romance between a reclusive gym manager and a bodybuilder, culminating in a wild and violent climax. With engaging performances from Stewart and Katy O'Brian and an intense narrative, Love Lies Bleeding is a must-watch film.
Directed and co-written by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding boasts a truly top-notch cast. In Kristen Stewart's action thriller with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Oscar-nominated actor plays Lou, a reclusive gym manager living in New Mexico. Set in 1989, Love Lies Bleeding straddles several genres. At its core, the film is a neo-noir crime thriller, but it's also a romance with dark comedy elements. However, Love Lies Bleeding's plot is straight-forward enough: a rising bodybuilder, Jackie (Katy O'Brian), drifts into town on her way to a potentially star-making competition in Las Vegas.

There are numerous names rising to a high status in Hollywood, but only a handful of them play an essential role in changing the landscape of the acting industry. Lily Gladstone is one of those people, and it is needless to say that her streak of success still continues. Making her acting debut in 2012, it took almost four years until she made her breakthrough in Kelly Reichardts indie drama Certain Women, but with the success of that movie, many doors were opened.
Even though Certain Women kick-started her career, it was her striking role in Killers of the Flower Moon that elevated her to Hollywood stardom. The movie by well-known director and writer Martin Scorsese, which is available to stream on Apple...

Lily Gladstone has quickly become one of Hollywoods most esteemed and sought-after actors and for good reason. After shining in projects like Kelly Reichardts Certain Women and First Cow and The Unknown Country, they were cast in Martin Scorseses Killers of the Flower Moon and received widespread acclaim, including a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and an Oscar nomination. They recently starred in true crime drama Under the Bridge alongside Riley Keough, which has strong Emmy buzz, and will soon be seen in Reed Morano and Charlie Kaufmans highly anticipated The Memory Police as well as Andrew Ahns rom-com The Wedding Banquet.

There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.
“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”
So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.
Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

And she has, but at home in Seattle, post-Oscars, she’s spent some well-earned time on the sofa, specifically watching The Bear Season 2. She’s not likely to be hanging around watching Carmy in his Chicago kitchen for too long, though.

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

With last year's release of Killers of the Flowers Moon, people are talking about the latest masterpiece from Martin Scorsese, and one of the big reasons is the great performance by Lily Gladstone. The actress became the first Native American to ever be nominated in the Best Actress category, and almost every critical review of the film has singled her out as a force to be reckoned with, which is no small feat when sharing major screen time with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. But those who've paid attention will know that she's been out in the acting scene for quite a while now, building up a resume through roles in projects like Billions and Buster's Mal Heart. One filmmaker who saw something in her long before the masses caught on is Kelly Reichardt, who cast her in Certain Women, which is an exceptional introduction to Gladstone's skill.

Lily Gladstone was undeniably one of the biggest stars of 2023. Her compelling performance in Killers of the Flower Moon earned her rave reviews and an Oscar nomination, but this only scratches the surface of her filmography. She's been turning in solid work for over a decade, with memorable roles in movies like Certain Women, First Cow, and The Unknown Country. She even hosted a fantastic film production show back in 2017 for the educational YouTube channel Crash Course.

Lily Gladstone has already made history. When the Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce actor received an Oscar nomination for their searing performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on January 23, she became the first Native American actor to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, and the second Native American performer to receive an Oscar nomination overall, after Chief Dan George’s Supporting Actor Nomination for 1970’s “Little Big Man.”
Should Gladstone win the award, it would make them the first Native American performer to ever win an acting Oscar — an incredible achievement, albeit not one that erases the Oscars’ troubled history with Indigenous people. But regardless of what happens, Gladstone’s incredible work in the film as Mollie Burkhart, a real life Osage woman in the 1920s whose husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) was a conspirator in a series of mass murders of her people — stands...

Lily Gladstone, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a trailblazing Native American actress whose breakout performance in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon, as an Osage woman named Mollie Burkhart whose oil wealth made her a target of white men during what is known as the “Reign of Terror,” has made her a bona-fide star. Indeed, she has already won the best actress in a motion picture drama Golden Globe Award and the best actress National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle and SAG awards; she was nominated for the best actress Critics Choice Award; and she is nominated, in a first for an Indigenous American, for the best actress Academy Award.

A24’s Past Lives won the top prize for best feature at the 39th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, with writer-director Celine Song also winning best director for her feature film debut.
American Fiction’s Jeffrey Wright won best lead performance for his role in the Amazon MGM Studios comedy, presented to him by his fellow Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. “It’s funny, you go to these award shows, and you kind of grow tired of them,” laughed Wright. “And then you get one. It changes the vibe a little bit.”
American Fiction writer-director Cord Jefferson also won best screenplay for his directorial debut. “Our film is so independent that one morning I woke up at our hotel to find out that there had been a triple stabbing the night before in the lobby,” said Jefferson. “They were cleaning up the blood. And I would not have it any other way.

Martin Scorsese thinks the length of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' "felt right" despite complaints about the runtime. The 81-year-old filmmaker's epic new movie is over three hours long and he admits that he is at a loss at how to respond to those who think that picture should be shorter.Scorsese told Variety: "I really don't know how to respond to it except for the fact that many people seem to go with it. Some people say, 'I want to see it again.'"Not every film is for every person. Not every novel is for every reader, not every painting, etc. I don't know if it's something that will be universally accepted. This one felt right (at this length), and I felt that while I was watching it. I felt inside of it."Lily Gladstone has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role...

As the 96th annual Academy Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, Martin Scorsese was in New York, the city that shaped his gutsy and gritty style of filmmaking. His latest epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” picked up 10 Oscar nominations, although lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed. With his director nod, Scorsese has been recognized 10 times in the category, making him the most nominated living filmmaker, edging out Steven Spielberg. But as he achieved that feat, his thoughts returned to old friends from “the neighborhood,” those rough-and-tumble streets of Little Italy where he came of age.
“The ones I knew are mostly gone, along with the neighborhood itself,” Scorsese says. “But they’re always with me, wherever I go. Maybe they’re joking around with me and giving me a hard time, but they’re proud.”

Hot on the heels of her historic Oscar nomination, Killers of the Flower Moon breakout Lily Gladstone has found her next starring role, one that reteams her with filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Gladstone is attached to star in The Memory Police, a hot package that is coming together. It will adapt of the acclaimed 1994 science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa. Reed Morano, who helmed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale as well as indie I Think We’re Alone Now, is on board to direct the feature whose story has tones of Franz Kafka and George Orwell, and fittingly comes armed with a script by Charlie Kaufman, the writer of such mind-tripping movies as Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Morano and Margot Hand of Picture Films will produce. Scorsese will executive produce along with Ogawa.

Native American characters have been depicted in the movies since the dawn of Hollywood, but in 2024 an actual Native American actor has finally been nominated for an Academy Award.
Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimiipuu) has been a frontrunner all season for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and on Tuesday morning she officially became a best actress Oscar nominee. Her predecessors in the category include Whale Rider’s Keisha Castle-Hughes (who is Maori) in 2004 and Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio (who is Native Mexican) in 2019, while other Indigenous nominated actors include Graham Greene (who is First Nations), nominated for best supporting actor in 1991 for Dances With Wolves, but Gladstone is the first Native American acting nominee.
With 1983 best song winner Buffy Sainte-Marie’s ancestry now in dispute, Gladstone could also now be tied for the first Native American Oscar nominee in any category. (Sainte-Marie was raised by...

Lily Gladstone has made Oscar history.
On Tuesday morning Gladstone was nominated in the Lead Actress category, making her the first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in this category.
If she wins, she will be the first indigenous actress to do so in this category.
In Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone portrays Mollie Burkhart, an oil-rich Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), the nephew of an influential rancher. When her Osage Nation family and friends are systematically murdered, and her own health fails dramatically, a murder investigation ensues, led by the then-nascent FBI.
Earlier this month, Gladstone who is of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, made Golden Globe history too, as she became the first indigenous woman to win Best Actress. In her acceptance speech she said, “This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little...

This article contains Killers of the Flower Moon spoilers.
Silence greets Ernest Burkhart when he enters a meeting with the business leaders of Osage County, Oklahoma. This late into Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) has proven to be easily pliable, to the point that his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro) can convince him to poison his beloved wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone). But he can be pushed only so far. If the leaders do not want Ernest to testify against his uncle, they must be subtle.
Thus the quiet when Ernest enters the room, which Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto shoot like a baroque painting. The low mumble of their conversation fades as each withered white face turns from the shadows to face Ernest, who nods in a suggestion of understanding.
But the quiet breaks when W.S. Hamilton, the lawyer for Hale and Ernest,...

Though much has been made about the trio of Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro coming together in the titanic cinematic experience that is Killers of the Flower Moon, there is a different name that should be front of mind: Lily Gladstone. Her fellow actors are all great, but this film would be nothing without her giving what is yet another stunning yet subtle showstopper of a performance. It is also merely one of many in her career that, for those looking for more of her incredible work, should seek out however they can. From her breakout performance in 2016's Certain Women to her other film from this year The Unknown Country and the upcoming Fancy Dance (which a distributor looking for another spectacular story needs to pick up already so more people can see it beyond festivals), Gladstone has become one of the most exciting performers of...

Lily Gladstone has responded to Devery Jacobs‘ criticisms of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jacobs previously tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese drama brought forth deep emotions based on its “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people.
The film follows the real-life killings of the Osage after oil was found on their land in Oklahoma.
Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure.
“I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers,” Gladstone said of Jacobs. “We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when Certain Women played at TIFF.

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

Lily Gladstone is calling out Oklahoma public schools ahead of the “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiere.
The Martin Scorsese film, which is based on David Grann’s nonfiction book chronicling a series of Osage Nation murders in Oklahoma during the 1920s after the discovery of oil on their land, stars Gladstone as a member of the Osage people whose family is murdered. During an Interview magazine conversation with “Certain Women” director Kelly Reichardt, Gladstone compared teaching the film to the denial of reparations for the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre following multiple state lawsuits. “Killers of the Flower Moon” also takes place in the 1920s post the terrorist attack.
“Everything that these Oklahomans are doing is — to say that the objection to teaching about the Tulsa massacre at Greenwood wasn’t race-driven is just — every teacher in the state’s too afraid to teach ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,'” Gladstone said.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone recently joined Rolling Stone for an interview in which she was asked to weigh in on the heated criticism of the film made by “Reservation Dogs” actor Devery Jacobs, who Gladstone said is a friend. Gladstone also appeared on “Reservation Dogs.” Jacobs is a fellow Indigenous actor best known for playing Elora on three seasons of the FX and Hulu comedy series. She called out “Flower Moon” last October for not portraying its Osage characters with “honor or dignity” and for further dehumanizing them by depicting their deaths.
“We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when ‘Certain Women’ played at TIFF,” Gladstone said when asked about Jacobs’ criticisms, with Rolling Stone noting the actor’s “face drops” when the topic is brought up. “I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair.

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.

“It goes without saying: congratulations on your work.” So said Film Independent President, at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Award nominee brunch on January 6. It’s been exceedingly rare for Indigenous actors to play lead roles in Hollywood, even more so for prestige, awards-contending projects. As such, it should be of little surprise that Lily Gladstone’s 2024 Golden Globe win makes her the first Indigenous actor to win an award in the ceremony’s 81-year history.
In taking home best actress in a motion picture, drama for their role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimíipuu) makes history as the only Indigenous person to take home a Golden Globe. Irene Bedard is the only other actor to previously receive a nomination — for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie for 1994’s Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee — while director Taika Waititi was recognized for Jojo Rabbit’s best musical/comedy film nomination in 2020 and Reservation Dogs was nominated for best musical/comedy series in 2022.

Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes by becoming the first Indigenous woman in the show’s 81-year history to win the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award for her transformative performance in Martin Scorsese drama Killers of the Flower Moon. The category was one of the most anticipated of the night and featured several powerhouse performances from the past year.
The film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book The Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. The film depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in Oklahoma during the 1920s, after they made massive discoveries of oil on their land. Gladstone, an actress known for indie films like Certain Women and Billions, plays the role of Mollie Burkhart. Mollie is an Osage woman who marries Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of a powerful local rancher.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

Lily Gladstone is the crown jewel of awards season so far, on her way to a likely Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Just last week, Gladstone earned the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, among many other honors already happening.
But at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, Lily Gladstone added the Performance Award to those accolades for her searing turn in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama. The Montana-born actress — who is of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage — plays the real-life Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who played a pivotal but tragic role in exposing the systematic murder of wealthy Osage by white opportunists in 1920s Oklahoma.
Yet instead of only touting her acclaimed role in the Apple Original Films feature — her studio debut — she took to the IndieWire Honors stage to champion her indie film “Fancy Dance,...
