And while the series never became a mainstream work, the fandom of the Terraformars series is a loyal and large one. The announcement of Terra Formars' upcoming return to serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump was completely unexpected, after five years of silence.

The official site and social channels for Young Jump magazine have confirmed that the Terra Formars manga by Yu Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana will resume serialization in the magazine on April 4 in Japan following the publication of its most recent chapter in December 2018, when the series was forced into an indefinite hiatus due to writer Sasuga's health issues. During the 21st century, scientists decided to make Mars a planet that could be inhabited in the future. The solution they came up with was to terraform its ground by spreading special algae with the help of cockroaches that would spread the substance all over the planet. Now, in 2577, they realize that the cockroaches have mutated into anthropomorphous, extremely strong and fast monsters. The story is set during the mid-Tokugawa Shogunate period, and it centers on an immortal swordsman "who will not be able to lift his curse of everlasting life until 1000 evildoers feel the cut of his steel". In the process, he ends up protecting a young girl who happens to have some wicked fighting skills of her own.

I love watching these kinds of movies and I had a smile on my face from ear to ear while watching this trailer. Given his mindboggling output, it would be strange not to have a most anticipated list not featuring Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, who usually has several projects premiering during any given year. As far as we can tell, he only has one title scheduled for release in 2016, the intriguing Terra Formers, a live action manga adaptation which sounds an awful lot like Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997). Humans deposit some moss and cockroaches on Mars in hopes of fostering an inhabitale environment for later use on the Red Planet. In the year 2599, they return to find a species of dangerous humanoid cockroaches. The production is the first Japanese film to shoot in Iceland. A cast headlined by Rinko Kikuchi (Babel; Pacific Rim) has us even more excited for what sounds like one of Miike’s most extravagantly gonzo creations yet.

Takashi Miike has settled on his (give or take) 416th feature, and it’s in a territory that won’t surprise any of this prolific helmer’s fans. Following Yakuza Apocalypse, a recent Tiff title that we liked and talked to him about, and next year’s Terra Formars — so long as nothing else crops up between now and then — will be a samurai picture entitled Blade of the Immortal. Notwithstanding how much that just sounds like the very title of something he’d produce, this work is based on a manga / anime series that mixes the mysticism and honor-bound drama that comprises so much of his oeuvre.

Takuya Kimura is to play Manji, a more-or-less immortal samurai with terrible deeds to his name. His sister’s death spurns the need to end his immortality — something that can only be achieved by killing 1,000 evildoers. With the help of “sacred bloodworms” that repair wounds,...
