A prolific medium with titles to suit whichever form of entertainment the viewers desire, anime has no shortage of wide-ranging epics one could spend months catching up to, short and sweet one-cour shows to watch over the weekend, and multi-seasonal series perfect to enjoy at one’s own pace. An equally multifaceted category, anime movies offer self-contained, impactful narratives with minimal time commitment required.

The Osaka High Court announced on January 28 that Shinji Aoba — the defendant who was sentenced in January 2024 for the Kyoto Animation arson attack — withdrew his appeal of the guilty verdict on January 27, closing the case and bringing the trial to an end, according to the Nhk . Aoba's defense team initially appealed the sentencing on January 26 last year, a day after the initial ruling. The Kyoto District Court sentenced Aoba to the death penalty following the guilty verdict on January 25, 2024 for the murder of 36 employees — who included The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya director Yasuhiro Takemoto, animator Yoshiji Kigami, chief animation director on the Free! franchise Futoshi Nishiya, Sound! Euphonium character designer Shouko Ikeda and many more — attempted murder on 32 counts, arson, breaking and entering, and violating the firearms and sword control law. Kyoto Animation’s lawyer Daisuke Okeda released a short statement to the Nhk about the withdrawal saying, “[Kyoto Animation] is aware...

The music drama is a rich and thriving genre within animation. In fact, the music drama ecosystem is so diverse that it’d be better described as a constellation of related subgenres, ranging from distinct snapshots of specific scenes like Beck and Kids on the Slope , to full-on competition runs and character studies like Sound! Euphonium or Your lie in April , alongside music-furnished slice of life classics like K-On! And that’s before you get to anime’s bevy of diverse idol productions, which themselves range from the sitcom-adjacent ensemble antics of Love Live! to the luxuriously animated melodrama of the Idolmaster franchise. There’s so much to get into that it’s no surprise any one exceptional production might slip through the cracks, or at best become a “sleeper hit” for dedicated fans. And for BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! , that discovery process was compounded by the fact that...

When the first season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya premiered in 2006, it was primed to be an all-time classic, maybe even on the scale of anime like Dragon Ball or Fullmetal Alchemist. It was so huge, a flash mob of hundreds of people took to the streets of Akihabara and performed the dance to the first season's ending theme song, "Hare Hare Yukai." The crowd of dancing Sos Brigade cosplayers was so big that the police had to break them up. In 2024, there are still remnants of Haruhi's explosion scattered around Japan and various otakus' memorabilia collections. Haruhi can still even be seen in the occasional PSA poster on the streets of, say, suburban Osaka.
If The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's legacy was measured by these sporadic resurgences alone, then it's safe to say that it's a bona fide classic. Unfortunately, that's not the case, nor is it today's reality.

The Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest anime finally premiered on screen on July 7, 2024. To celebrate the return of the popular shonen action series, a special illustration of Lucy Heartfilia was drawn by the creator of A Silent Voice.
Yoshitoki Oima, the author and illustrator of A Silent Voice, illustrated the Fairy Tail heroine for the series' official social media X account, commemorating the TV airing of the 100 Years Quest anime series. Oima's illustration of Lucy is a little risqu, as the Celestial Wizard is wearing little clothing sans a scarf around her chest. For longtime fans of Fairy Tail or fans of Hiro Mashima in general, the slightly suggestive artwork of Lucy isn't far from the norm. However, for those who follow Oima's works such as A Silent Voice or To Your Eternity, her somewhat provocative artwork of Lucy might come as a surprise.

After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

Uji City and Kyoto Animation have a very strong bond. Not only is Sound! Euphonium , one of the studio’s current flagship anime, set in the area, but it is also where the studio is located, with many of the staff living in and around the city. Because of this bond, the two partnered up for a tourism campaign to highlight the romantic history of the area centered around Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji . The campaign was originally announced in October 2023 with a gorgeous visual. Yesterday, a commercial for the town keeping with the same historical context from the poster was brought to life in a way only the staff at Kyoto Animation can. The short 30-second version of the video is available above, but a longer six-minute version will be available inside Uji City from March 9 through location sharing on your smartphone. Screenwriter Jukki Hanada is collaborating with anime studios to create a music-themed anime movie focused on amateur music video production. A Few Moments of Cheers breaks ground by celebrating an unsung part of music production visually and narratively. The movie is a collaboration between Hanada, 100Studio, and Hurray!, and features stunning 3D animation and a unique story about young talent in both animation and music.
Screenwriter Jukki Hanada is collaborating with a few anime studios to create A Few Moments of Cheers, a new music-themed anime movie. The movie is currently expected to premiere in Japan later this summer. While Hanada has been behind some notable music-themed shows, his new project breaks ground with a story focused on amateur music video production.
Music and entertainment-themed anime are more than familiar, and the common notion is that they involve high school bands or idol groups. Hanada himself has penned a few scripts with such a cast.

A Japanese court on Thursday announced the death sentence for Aoba Shinji, the man who burned down the Kyoto Anime studio in 2019 and killed 36 people.
There was little doubt that Aoba, who himself was badly burned in the blaze, was the perpetrator and set the fire using gasoline.
Shortly after the attack, at a press conference, the Kyoto police said that Aoba had unspecified mental health issues. Aoba pleaded not guilty at trial and his defense lawyers argued that he was mentally unfit and could not be held criminally responsible.
The Kyoto District Court, however, said it found that Aoba could determine right and wrong at the time of the incident. His capacity for responsibility was “determined to have been neither insane nor mentally incompetent at the time of the crime,” public broadcaster Nhk reported.
After ruling that Aoba was mentally capable of facing punishment for the crimes, the court...

The premiere date for The Eminence in Shadow Season 2 is approaching, and a new promotional image teases what the dark fantasy isekai has in store.
Per Anime News Network, the key visual promises a story filled with action as it sees multiple characters wielding weapons. Moreover, it sees protagonist Cid Kagenou appropriately in the center with a brooding look on his face and a woman dramatically passed out in his arms.

However, the new image isn't the first look at the upcoming season fans of The Eminence in Shadow have received. Hidive, which will stream Season 2, dropped a trailer that spotlights that story's unique blend of comedy and over-the-top edginess. Moreover, a different trailer that was released earlier this year showcases the new season's main setting -- the darkly atmospheric Lawless City. Japan’s anime powerhouse Kyoto Animation Studio, known for its compassionate storytelling and respectful treatment of its animators, was attacked by an arsonist on Thursday, with a fire breaking out at the company’s first studio building in Fushimi-ku, killing at least 33 workers and injuring more than 30 more.
The country was rocked by the shocking terrorist attack, as the death toll was the highest for an arson incident since 1989. Around 70 people were working when the fire broke out in the morning, which quickly spread throughout the three stories; a 41-year-old suspect was taken into custody and no motive was ascertained.
Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) was founded in 1981 by the husband-and-wife team of Hideaki and Yoko Hatta, who serve as president and vice president, respectively. KyoAni, which has a second studio facility located in Uji city, is acclaimed for its focus on anime TV series and movies about pre-teen and teen schoolgirl empowerment.
