11 Second- and Third-Generation Actors Who Took Wildly Different Paths Than Their Famous Parents
Image
Hollywood has always been a family business.

One generation’s A-lister often leads to another’s breakout role — sometimes riding on a wave of familiar last names, other times actively ducking the spotlight.

But legacy doesn’t guarantee sameness. In fact, that’s where things get interesting.

(Jasper Savage/Prime Video)

While some actors seem molded in the image of their famous parents, others flip the script entirely.

They avoid the genre, tone, or polish that made their families household names — carving a quieter, quirkier, or downright chaotic path all their own. That contrast, that break from expectation, is where the fun begins.

‘BoJack Horseman’ Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg on Ditching Satire for Sincerity in ‘Long Story Short’
Image
Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the man broadly credited with reinventing animation with his 6-season, three-time Emmy-nominated Netflix hit Bojack Horseman, is back with more family trauma, but no taking animals, in Long Story Short.

The new Netflix animated series, which Bob-Waksberg premiered at the Annecy international animation film festival on Thursday, follows the trials and tribulations, or as Bob-Waksberg puts it, the “small t traumas,” of the Schwoopers, a fairly ordinary Jewish family.

“On one hand, it is an animated family comedy like Bob’s Burgers or King of the Hill, that kind of show, we have two parents, three kids,” he said, speaking at Annecy ahead of the series’ world premiere. “But the way we’re telling stories is a little different, in that we’re traveling back and forth through time. Not by using a time machine, just in the way we’re telling stories. So in the first episode, we...

Long before he portrayed one of the most powerful Marvel supervillains, Thanos, in the Avengersfranchise, Josh Brolin was just a teenager looking to get cast in a movie. Per People, Brolin revealed on Literally! with Rob Lowe on SiriusXM that he had to audition six times for the role of Brand Walsh in 1985’s classic The Goonies.

A Bones Guest Star Shares A Unique Distinction With David Boreanaz And Emily Deschanel
Image
It is not uncommon for TV stars to direct episodes of the series on which they appear. Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, Harry Morgan and David Ogden Stiers all directed more than one episode of "M*A*S*H;" Peter Bonerz became a prolific director of television shows and films after directing 29 episodes of "The Bob Newhart Show;" and Penny Marshall might never have brought us such big screen classics as "Big" and "A League of Their Own" had she not started out directing on "Laverne & Shirley."

For the directing curious, the set of a long-running television show is a great place to cut one's teeth, so it's no surprise that two members of the Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab found their way behind the camera during the 12-season run of "Bones." The most frequent guest in video village was David Boreanaz, who played the hard-charging FBI Agent Seeley Booth. He...

Why CBS Canceled 2 Broke Girls
Image
For hardcore fans, the cancellation of a beloved television show can feel like a death in the family. The ardor is sometimes so great that letter-writing campaigns are organized (like way back in the day with "Star Trek"). Occasionally, outdoor demonstrations are held. Nowadays, social media protests spreading across multiple platforms is a sure-fire way to grab the attention of networks and advertisers. Alas, at the end of the day, sometimes there's nothing to be done because it's strictly a cold, hard business decision that should look good at the next shareholders' meeting.

When series don't inflame viewers' passions, the show is left up to the whims of network programmers who value stability above all else (see: the un-killable franchise that is "Law & Order"). They realize not every series is destined to be a top 10 juggernaut, so they look for solid performance in key ratings demographics that might not show...
