It’s well-documented that Simone Biles doesn’t really like that athletes are bombarded with questions about “what’s next” in the moments after they’ve achieved their lifelong dreams.

But as she pondered her future after winning gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, and further cementing her legacy as the greatest gymnast of all time, a path began to emerge — toward entertainment.

“Whether I like it or not, I’ve been around the entertainment space for basically my whole professional career. If you asked me when I was younger, I wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to help people. I wanted to be out in the community,” Biles tells Variety about her decision to join the board of Religion of Sports (Ros), the media company founded by NFL legends Tom Brady and Michael Strahan and Emmy-winning documentarian Gotham Chopra.

There have been some weird Oscar goings-on around the music categories over the years, starting with Erich Wolfgang Korngold not officially winning the Oscar even though his score for “Anthony Adverse” did win in 1936, back when the statue went not to the composer but to the Warner Bros. Studio Music Department that hired him. Then there was Charlie Chaplin winning for his score to “Limelight” in 1973, even though the film was released in 1952 but never played in Los Angeles, making it eligible for the Oscars when it finally played L.A. 20 years later.

(Chaplin’s two fellow composers were both dead by the time they won, and Chaplin himself was a no-show.)

Serena Williams’ life and legacy will be featured in an upcoming docuseries for ESPN.

The announcement was made at the Walt Disney Company upfront presentation in New York on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and was presented under the title, In the Arena: Serena Williams. The docuseries is set to span the tennis champion’s career as one of the most decorated athletes of all time with a combined 39 Grand Slam titles, including 23 singles titles, 14 doubles, and two mixed doubles titles.

Rarely in recent memory has a TV show been so propitiously timed as “The Last Dance.” The 10-episode documentary series about the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls premiered in May, weeks after the coronavirus pandemic caused the shutdown of all major live sports events, leaving fans bereft.

Into that void slipped “The Last Dance,” turning five straight Sunday nights into must-see events for large swathes of audiences quarantined at home. Over the course of its run, “The Last Dance” averaged 5.6 million viewers. And in seizing the moment, it’s becoming emblematic of a wave in sports documentary programming that has been building for years.

“It’s a funny time to celebrate any project and pat yourselves on the back, but I will say, I think it was the perfect project at a really specific point in time in our history,” says Libby Geist, vice president & executive producer, ESPN Films and Original Content.

Late basketball great Kobe Bryant will be honored with a posthumous Emmy at this year’s Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, the Television Academy announced late Wednesday.

Bryant will recieve the 72nd Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award, which was selected by the Los Angeles Area Governors Award committee in honor of Bryant’s “philanthropy, community building and inspiration that extended beyond the basketball court.”

According to the org, the award “is presented to an individual, company or organization that has made an outstanding, innovative and visionary achievement in the arts, sciences or management of television as well as a substantial contribution to the greater Los Angeles area.”

Spectrum SportsNet, which holds the TV rights to the Los Angeles Lakers, nominated Bryant for the award. Bryant, who died in January in a helicopter crash, spent 20 years with the Lakers and was part of five Lakers championships, 18 NBA All-Star appearances and two Olympic games.
