Ananth Mahadevan pits theatre giants against newcomers in ‘Rough Book’!
Ananth Mahadevan’s upcoming film Rough Book, which takes a hard look at the education system, may be in the news for having nailed several issues through an entertaining film. But what’s also creating a buzz is the film’s unique casting. The film that has got a thumbs-up at various film festivals internationally boasts a rather quaint ensemble cast. So, while on one hand, there is the talented dynamo Tannishtha Chatterjee and many theatre seniors including Kaizad Kotwal, Suhasini Mulay, Vinay Jain, Joy Sengupta, on the other hand all the students are actually first-time actors, except the protagonist, Amaan F Khan, who is one-film-old.

Talking about it, Mahadevan points out that the contrast itself made it a very interesting concept. He elaborates, “It was not a conscious decision to make it a senior versus junior kind of a thing, but I was sure that I wanted certain raw...

Tannishtha goes back to school!
Tannishtha Chatterjee is known for her effortless onscreen transition into the character she plays. Her upcoming Rough Book is no different in which she plays a teacher whose out-of-the-box approach when it comes to teaching her students ruffles many feathers. And while the actress had much to draw from her own school days to play her part to the T, Tannishtha not only met several teachers, but also attended classes to nail the mannerisms of a teacher.

An insider reveals, “She’s always been good in academics, so she must’ve been a front bencher in school. But we could see she was thrilled to be a back-bencher for a change!”

The highly-acclaimed film directed by Ananth Mahadevan is set to release on June 24th.

No workshops please, says Ananth Mahadevan
Ananth Mahadevan is a zara hatke director. Not only has he pitted a bunch of newbies in front of theatre giants in his upcoming film Rough Book that also stars Tannishtha Chatterjee, but unlike many filmmakers he had very few workshops prior the shoot of the film.

Explaining why, Mahadevan says, “The idea of casting newbies as students was to capture their restlessness and raw energy on screen. We didn’t want it to look trained or restrained at any point. Hence we had workshop only to help them understand the characters. We didn’t want them to even learn their dialogues.”

And seems like the director’s mantra worked big time too. As the film that has been screened at several film festivals internationally has only been garnering accolades on all fronts.

Ananth Mahadevan keeps it all real for ‘Rough Book’!
Not just the locales, where the film was shot, but even the supporting cast is all real in Rough Book. Director Ananth Mahadevan reveals that for his upcoming film, he has shot at actual locations as he didn’t want to compromise on the authenticity of the film. That means shooting at schools and colleges. But that’s not all. The director reveals that even the teachers and students who are seen in the background are from actual class-room sessions that were in progress.

The acclaimed director says, “We shot on a real campus in Pune and since we didn’t want to compromise on the ‘real’ factor, a lot of the scenes that show the classes is progress in the background are all actual shots with real teachers and students.”

The film that’s creating much buzz for taking the lid of the education system also stars Tannishtha Chatterjee as a Physics teacher.
