Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

Talent agency Verve has signed Troy Kotsur, the deaf star of Best Picture-winner “Coda” who is fresh off his Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor, after a competitive situation among agencies.
Kotsur is the first deaf man to win an Oscar, and he’s the second deaf actor overall to win after his onscreen wife in “Coda” Marlee Matlin won the Best Actress prize for 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God.”
The success of “Coda” also allowed Kotsur the opportunity to make an appearance in an episode of “The Mandalorian,” and next up he’ll star as the coach of a deaf track team in a film called “Flash Before the Bang,” which is being produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Pearl Street Films. He’s also appeared on “CSI: NY,” “Scrubs, “Criminal Minds” and directed his first film, “No Ordinary Hero.”

The Academy Awards can change careers in a way no other award can. Brie Larson went from winning an Oscar for “Room” to becoming Captain Marvel. Rami Malek has jumped from “Mr. Robot” to James Bond villain in “No Time to Die” in part due to his star-making victory in 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” With that in mind, what lies in the future for this year’s Oscar winners?
With her win for Best Supporting Actress as Anita in “West Side Story,” Ariana DeBose has become the first openly queer actress of color and the first Afro-Latina star to win an acting Oscar. Next up, DeBose will join Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters and play Calypso in “Kraven the Hunter,” which is slated for theaters on January 13, 2023.
Troy Kotsur has become the first deaf male actor to win a competitive Oscar, winning the Best Supporting Actor prize for his work on “Coda.

Troy Kotsur has become the first deaf male actor to win a competitive Oscar, winning the Best Supporting Actor prize for his work on “Coda.”
Kotsur is preceded only by Marlee Matlin, his “Coda” co-star and on-screen wife, as the only other deaf individual to have won an Oscar. She won Best Actress for her work in “Children of a Lesser God” in 1986.
“This is amazing to be here on this journey,” Kotsur said through an interpreter as last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner, Yuh-Jung Youn, held his Oscar so he could sign his speech. “I really want to thank all the wonderful deaf theater stages where I was allowed to develop my craft as an actor.”
He added, “This is dedicated to the deaf community, to the Coda community, to the disabled community. This is our moment.”
