Troubadour Eric Andersen on New Album and Why ‘A Complete Unknown’ Was a Tad ‘Sugarcoated’
Image
It’s taken a few months, since he lives in the Netherlands, but Eric Andersen finally found time to watch A Complete Unknown. And the troubadour legend, who haunted those same Village clubs during that same time, was…a bit underwhelmed.

“It seemed a little sugarcoated,” he says. ”It was a little two-dimensional. But I found it quite amusing and quite entertaining. I was looking at it more like a cinematic situation than something I knew. I was watching a movie. So, I enjoyed it from that standpoint.”

Then again,...

Mike Flanagan's 'Clayface' Movie Getting Rewrites From 'Drive' Screenwriter
Image
Fans eager to see Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie will apparently not be getting the celebrated filmmaker’s DC horror project exactly as he wrote it, as it seems Drive and The Wings of the Dove screenwriter Hossein Amini has been drafted in to rewrite the movie. While it has not been revealed the extent of those rewrites, it seems likely that they will be substantial enough to mean Mike Flanagan fans will not be seeing the movie that the Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep director intended.

According to The Wrap, the villain-centric movie will now be getting an overhaul before cameras roll in the U.K. this October under the direction of James Watkins. Flanagan has been incredibly successful in the last decade as the creator of several incredible series at Netflix, including Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and the aforementioned The Haunting of Hill House.

Inside Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party With Winners, Billionaires, Rock Royalty and a Teary Jenna Ortega
Image
Oscar night is all about timing.

The challenge is getting it right. You want to be at the best party when it’s peaking (or before), planted in place while the vibes are strong and the crowd remains peppered with people holding 8.5-pound golden statues, and bolting before you’re among the final few on the dance floor in order to catch a wave to the next best thing on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Journalists, like this one, are only allowed inside a handful of Oscar night events, a fact that fortunately helps to keep a hot schedule. There’s the requisite stop at the Academy’s post-show Governors Ball, the Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party or Vanity Fair. The more exclusive invites — Madonna and Guy Oseary’s The Party or Beyoncé and Jay Z’s Gold Party, for instance — are press free zones. The late-night bashes offer A-listers,...

Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ Wins Best Picture After a Stunning Oscar Steamroll
Image
Anora steamrolled through the 2025 Oscars on Sunday, with Sean Baker’s indie upstart winning five Oscars, including best picture and director, and star Mikey Madison staging an upset for best actress.

“It’s a dream come true. I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow,” Madison said when accepting her prize.

Many of the people involved with the film no doubt felt the same.

Beginning life as an outsider production backed by the New York-based FilmNation before being acquired by Neon, the class commentary took the Palme d’Or at May’s Cannes Film Festival, endured a whole bunch of lulls throughout the season and then emerged Sunday as one of the most dominant Oscar winners in recent memory.

Baker won for producing, directing, writing and editing his action-tinged black comedy about the relationship between a stripper and a Russian oligarch’s son. Baker’s capturing of four Oscars for...

Pete Hammond’s Final Oscar Predictions In All 23 Categories
Image
And now for the final word on who will win the gold Sunday at the 97th Oscars.

Since Cannes in May I have been reviewing the movies, assessing their awards potential, predicting the Oscar nominations, and now finally here is my best and Final guess as to who and what will emerge triumphant in all 23 categories for the 2025 Academy Awards. So much has been written, so much has been talked about, and actually overall for me it has been a swell year for movies, at least good ones, or at the very least enough good ones to make this lineup of nominees for Oscars a deserving one.

Let me caution these are my predictions, some still shaky, but not necessarily what I might have voted for. In other words, this is not a wish list but rather a reflection of where the long and ever-unwinding road stood as Oscar balloting ended on February 18 at 5 p.

How Adrien Brody in ‘The Brutalist’ is like Cate Blanchett in ‘Tár’ — and why Brody should avoid a similar Oscar fate
Image
The Brutalist heads into Sunday’s Oscars ceremony as one of 2024’s most acclaimed films, an epic piece of filmmaking that earned 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Brady Corbet. However, while the film was once considered the Best Picture favorite, its best bets for Oscar glory on Sunday are in other categories: Best Score, Best Cinematography, and presumably Best Actor. Or at least so it appeared before the Screen Actors Guild Awards, when A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet pulled off the upset win over The Brutalist lead — and season-long frontrunner — Adrien Brody. With Chalamet’s surprise SAG win, how worried should Brody be about a Timothée triumph at the Academy Awards?

Before answering that, let’s flash back to 2022. That year, Todd Field’s Tár was in a similar boat, the cineaste favorite about a fictional character so fully embodied by an actor that audiences...

Oscar Nominee Tod Maitland Recalls “Pleasant Surprise” Of Timothée Chalamet Channeling Bob Dylan, Teases Bruce Springsteen-Based ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’
Image
After investing more than five years perfecting his Bob Dylan chops as A Complete Unknown wound its way to production, Timothée Chalamet saved his most persuasive performance for the film’s crew.

Production audio mixed Tod Maitland, part of the team nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound for the film, recalled the star coming to him 10 minutes before a key scene started shooting at New York’s Carnegie Hall. “He said, ‘I’m going live,’” Maitland recalled.

The idea had surfaced during rehearsals, but once the decision was made at the start of the 53-day shoot, decades’ worth of moviemaking customs was dispensed with in a flash. Everyone behind the camera, including director James Mangold, recognized they were entering uncharted waters. ‘We threw away all those [pre-recorded] tracks,” Maitland added. “We never had one timing mechanism, we had no earpieces. No playback for this entire movie. It was basically like...

The biggest stars from the U.K. and beyond are arriving on the red carpet for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.

Timothée Chalamet Thought ‘A Complete Unknown’ Production Was ‘Cursed’: It Took ‘Five Years’ to Get Made
Image
Timothée Chalamet didn’t even know if “A Complete Unknown” would ever get made.

The actor, who is now Oscar-nominated for portraying Bob Dylan in the biopic, told W that he thought the film was “cursed” because of its production delays. The feature was originally titled “Going Electric,” and was adapted from Elijah Wald’s 2015 biography “Dylan Goes Electric.” Writer/director James Mangold announced the film in 2020 — a bad time to start production — and the feature was shelved amid the Covid-19 pandemic. It was released in 2024.

“Originally, I thought I had no time to prepare, but there were delays,” Chalamet said for W’s Directors Issue alongside his “Dune” auteur Denis Villeneuve and David Lynch’s original Paul Atreides, Kyle MacLachlan. “I began to think the film was cursed, but the five years it took to get the cast and movie finally together ended up being a good thing.”

AFI Awards Kicks Off Important Weekend As Final Oscar Voting Looms With Early Deadline – Notes On The Season
Image
A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.

We are getting down to the wire, and this weekend could do much to clarify the true state of the Oscar race. By the time the Super Bowl rolls around on Sunday we will have the results of Friday’s delayed Critics Choice Awards (ballots were in on January 10 before the ceremony was postponed twice due to the wildfires); the all-important PGA awards; the DGA awards and even the Annie Awards in a particularly strong year for feature animation. And after all this, the Oscar ballots go live and voting begins for just one week on Tuesday, February 11, closing February 18. That’s a very tight window between nominations and a final verdict.

Oscar Voting On Speed Dial

I am not sure why the Academy needs 11 days to count the digital votes. SAG, for instance, closes balloting just two days before...

Despite Bombing at the Box Office, the 2024 Certified Fresh Spiritual Sequel to The Greatest Showman Is Destined to Become a Cult Classic
Image
Musical biopics have become so regular in today's Hollywood landscape that movies are trying anything and everything to stand above the rest. Interestingly, in 2024, several musical biopics were released, such as Bob Marley's One Love, Back to Black and the Academy Award-nominated A Complete Unknown. Although technically a documentary with major artistic license, Pharell Williams' Piece by Piece told his professional and life story through the lens of LEGOs. It was an incredibly inspired and fascinating choice that interested audiences who weren't aware of how impactful Pharell Williams had been on the music industry. The movie went as far as to show real-life interviews and testimonials in Lego form, adding a beautifully colorful and nostalgic view to one of music's modern savants. Another movie that took an incredibly inspired chance in 2024 was the musical biopic of British superstar Robbie Williams: Better Man, where Williams is portrayed by a CGI monkey.

Timothée Chalamet Put on 20 Pounds to Play Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown
Image
Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet has added extra weight to his case for Best Actor, revealing that he gained 20 pounds to play Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

“I’ve turned over every stone. I did all the work, like you just described, physicality, behavior-wise,” Chalamet said in a recent interview with NPR. “But something we haven’t really talked about, I also put on 20 pounds because, believe it or not, I was thinner than the guy.”

As Variety points out, Chalamet has previously spoken about receiving feedback for his smaller physique while auditioning for action roles. “If I auditioned for The Maze Runner or Divergent, things of that variety that were popping when I was coming up, the feedback was always, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,'” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe late last year.

The Best Music Biopic Of All Time, According To IMDb
Image
We live in an age of biopics, and musicians are an unusually common theme that dominates that genre. In recent years, we've seen biographical dramatizations of Elton John ("Rocket Man"), Elvis Presley ("Elvis"), and Amy Winehouse ("Back to Black"). As of this writing, the most recent entry to the musical biopic genre is "A Complete Unknown," where Timothée Chalamet channels what can only be described as a "pretty good" iteration of Bob Dylan. The cascade of musically-infused biographies won't slow down any time soon, either. We've got projects on Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and The Beatles (among many others) on tap for the next few years.

The barrage of pop chart biopics begs the question, which one is the best? Is there a biopic of a musician that is considered better than all the rest? The answer, according to IMDb, is yes. In fact, there is one film...

It’s hard to imagine an occasion that would make Sara Bareilles nervous, considering that the Grammy Award winner is a veteran of stages far and wide. But Friday night’s Celebrating Sundance Institute fundraiser at Park City’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley proved to be such an event.

Upon taking her place in the ballroom lights to close out the starry event, Bareilles admitted that it was the “fancy room” that sent her nerves into overdrive. The fundraiser saw a long list of honorees and presenters take the stage including A Complete Unknown filmmaker James Mangold, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter, Glenn Close, Joel Edgerton, Marielle Heller, R.J. Cutler and Tessa Thompson. Guests making the rounds included Jon Hamm, Boots Riley, Kimberly Peirce, Roger Ross Williams and more.

Or maybe it was because the film that brought her to Sundance this year means so much to her.

4 Out of 5 2025 Best Actor Nominees Gave a Second Great Performance in 2024
Image
This year's nominations for the Academy Awards include a strong list of five nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Timothée Chalamet and Colman Domingo are given another chance to win an Oscar after having lost once in the past decade. Adrien Brody could win his second Oscar after having won for his role in The Pianist two decades ago, and Ralph Fiennes gets his third chance to win an Oscar after having lost in 1994 and 1997. Sebastian Stan rounds out the list of five as a first-time Oscar nominee.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of this year's Best Actor nominees is that the five actors starred in a combined total of nine films released in 2024. Each of those nine films had its own positive reception, whether it was from audiences, critics, or awards ceremonies. The large number of films containing the nominees for Best Actor showcases the strength of each actor,...

Chalamet admits he wasn’t even aware Sherman had been in a movie.

That’s when things get weird.

Chalamet is also serving as musical guest and is likely to perform at least a Dylan song or two, given his singing for the role in A Complete Unknown.

In the first promo, released Wednesday, Chalamet plays off the recent craze for Chalamet look-a-like contests by recruiting some of the kinda-sorta lookalikes to help with his duties.

Oscars: Full List of Nominees
Image
Emilia Pérez leads the 2025 Oscar nominations, which were revealed Thursday morning.

The film scored 13 noms, setting a record for a non-English-language film. That surpasses the previous record holders, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each earned 10.

Following Emilia Pérez were The Brutalist and Wicked, which tied with 10 noms apiece. A Complete Unknown and Conclave followed with eight mentions each.

All five of those films will compete for best picture with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and The Substance. Coralie Fargeat, who directed the latter film, was the only female to be nominated in the best directing category, and also scored a writing nom, while star Demi Moore landed the first Oscar nom of her career, as did Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.

Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, was nominated for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honored.

In the new biopic A Complete Unknown, Elle Fanning plays the girlfriend of a young Bob Dylan, played (to much acclaim) by Timothée Chalamet. It’s not the first time Fanning and Chalamet have been involved romantically on the big screen: They played young lovers in A Rainy Day in New York. That familiarity they have with each other worked to their advantage, Fanning said when it came to understanding the relationship between Dylan and her character, Sylvie. Weekend Box Office Update: Mufasa reclaims the top spot for the holiday weekend
Image
Update: The 4-day-holiday estimates have come in from Comscore, and it looks like Mufasa: The Lion King was able to edge out One of Them Days to take the top spot. Propelled by holiday matinees, Mufasa made $15.5 million compared to One of Them Days‘s $14.225 million. The weekend’s big flop, Wolf Man, clawed its way to a third-place finish with $12.5 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 wasn’t far behind with $11 million, while Moana 2 was able to pull ahead of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera with an $8.1 million gross. That was all expected, given that school is out for Martin Luther King Day, so a lot of folks are taking their kids to see movies. Even still, this was one of the lowest-grossing MLK weekends on record, as last year Mean Girls and The Beekeeper proved to be breakout hits. Nothing this weekend even came close to the $33 million...

‘Awards Magnet’: Final 2025 Oscar nominations predictions
Image
What’s taking the 10th spot in Best Picture? And who’s grabbing the fifth spot in Best Actress? Gold Derby experts and editors Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their final 2025 Oscar nominations predictions in all 23 categories on Awards Magnet.

The delayed Producers Guild of America Awards nominations threw us all for a loop on Thursday with a surprise nomination for September 5 alongside the expected Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked. Sing Sing, which remains in ninth place in the Best Picture odds, was Awol, a day after it collected three BAFTA nominations in all of its longlisted categories. The A24 drama’s run has been up and down all season, but is the PGA snub a death knell? Especially since September 5 has also underperformed?

Timothée Chalamet Fined for Riding E-Bike to ‘A Complete Unknown’ London Premiere
Image
Bollywood Mascot: Timothée Chalamet, known for his roles in films like Call Me by Your Name and Dune, made headlines with his unconventional arrival at the London premiere of his latest film, A Complete Unknown. To navigate through heavy traffic and promote eco-friendly transportation, Chalamet chose to ride a rented electric Lime bike to the event.

Dressed in a black suit paired with a blue printed shirt, Chalamet’s entrance was both stylish and environmentally conscious. However, the actor faced an unexpected consequence for his choice of transport. During an appearance on the French talk show Quotidien, Chalamet revealed that he received a £65 (approximately $79) fine for not parking the e-bike correctly. He humorously recounted the incident, stating, “There was a traffic jam. And I actually wasn’t allowed to park there [at the premiere], and I got a £65 fine.” He added, “And actually it’s horrible because it was actually kind of an advert for them.

Timothée Chalamet Got $79 Fine After Riding Bike To ‘A Complete Unknown’ London Premiere
Image
Although Timothée Chalamet opted for a sensible mode of transportation for his latest red carpet, apparently no good deed goes unpunished.

After the Oscar nominee arrived to Tuesday’s London premiere of A Complete Unknown on a Lime bike, he revealed he was slapped with a £65 (roughly $79) fine for incorrectly parking the ride.

“It’s ecological!” explained Chalamet on the French talk show Quotidien of why he hopped the bike. “It was horrible, because it was actually kind of an advert for them.”

He noted that he opted out of taking a car to the BFI Southbank premiere due to a traffic jam.

Chalamet’s bike ride comes after he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Bob Dylan in writer/director James Mangold‘s biopic A Complete Unknown.

« The idea is that I have no idea… there was a traffic jam and I actually wasn’t allowed...

Why Timothée Chalamet Says He Got a $79 Fine After Riding a Bike to ‘A Complete Unknown’ London Premiere
Image
It seems Timothée Chalamet needs to stick to rolling up to movie premieres in cars.

Earlier this week, the actor went viral for arriving at the London premiere of A Complete Unknown on a Lime bike. In photos shared online (below), Chalamet could be seen sporting a navy blue suit, paired with a lime green and white bike.

Lime bikes are electric bicycles that can be rented in major cities from the Lime transportation company.

However, he recently revealed on the talk show Quotidien, while promoting the biopic in France, that he actually got a 65 pound fine that night, which equates to $79.53, for not parking the bike properly.

Chalamet explained that while a bike is more eco-friendly, he actually opted out of taking a car to make it to the premiere on time as there was a traffic jam. And though he made it to the premiere, it ultimately cost him.

Timothée Chalamet rode an e-bike to the premiere of A Complete Unknown… then got a fine
Image
You may have seen pictures of Timothée Chalamet arriving at the London premiere of A Complete Unknown on a bright green e-bike. However, the actor was hit with a £60 fine because he didn’t park it properly. Chalamet told the French talk show Quotidien that he chose to hop on an e-bike instead of taking a car because he wanted to beat the traffic. “It’s ecological!” he said.

Chalamet has received rave reviews for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He’s scored nominations for best actor from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and BAFTAs. You can pretty much bet that he’ll also be adding an Oscar nomination to that list when they’re finally announced.

Dancing Through 2024: BAFTA Lauds Most Musical (Or Music-Inspired) List of Films Ever
Image
It is the most musical or music-inspired year in the British Academy’s history as Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Pérez all scored BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Wednesday.

Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical closely follows the leader, Conclave, with 11 nominations, including performance nominations for its three main actresses, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña. Director Audiard scored three nods, namely for best director, adapted screenplay and best film not in the English language. Plus, Paul Guilhaume is nominated for cinematography and Camille, Clement Ducol for their original score.

Jon M. Chu’s Broadway adaptation of the beloved musical Wicked (which scooped up the box office prize at the recent Golden Globes) picked up a healthy seven BAFTA nominations, including Cynthia Erivo‘s first main BAFTA award nomination ever in the leading actress category for her portrayal of Elphaba, as well as a supporting actress nod for Galinda/Glinda Ariana Grande.

Timothee Chalamet Rides a Lime Bicycle to 'A Complete Unknown' UK Premiere
Image
Timothee Chalamet has been making unique appearances at his A Complete Unknown premieres around the world, often showing up in replicas of Bob Dylan‘s previous looks.

The 29-year-old actor showed up at the UK premiere on a Lime bicycle on Tuesday night (January 14) at the BFI Southbank in London, England.

Timothee was joined at the premiere by co-stars Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez in the film, and Edward Norton, who plays Pete Seeger. They all just earned SAG Awards nominations for their individual work and another for their role in the film’s ensemble.

Edward brought wife Shauna Robertson to the event.

Did you know that Timothee actually did all of his own singing in the movie? He’s not lip-syncing to Bob‘s real voice.

A Complete Unknown has earned more than $50 million so far at the domestic box office and it’s first getting released in international territories.
