‘Peaky Blinders’ costume designer Stephanie Collie dies aged 60
Image
Stephanie Collie, the UK costume designer who created the iconic fashion look on the first season of Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 60.

Collie died on October 26 at St Christopher’s Hospice in London, following a terminal cancer diagnosis six months previously.

Collie based the look for Tommy Shelby and his early 20th century Birmingham street gang on criminal mugshots of the period. Her costume choices had significant influence on British fashion, and their effect continues to be felt 10 years after the show premiered.

Following a degree from the London College of Fashion, Collie worked in the sewing room at the BBC,...

What Frank Dillane Has Done Since Leaving Fear The Walking Dead
Image
Frank Dillane played Nick in the spinoff Fear The Walking Dead for four seasons. A prequel in the Walking Dead universe, the show followed the same successful formula as The Walking Dead, in which an ensemble cast had to make it through the apocalypse. The characters in Fear The Walking Dead are mostly new, and the show stars with high school teacher Madison Clark and her family as they attempt to survive the zombie apocalypse. Madison's son, former drug addict Nick, was quickly established as a character to watch as he adapted to the apocalypse.

Nick's death in season 4 came as a shock to viewers. Nick, played by Frank Dillane, went from a troubled and rebellious teen to a competent but flawed survivor who dedicated his life to gardening, and his storyline appeared set to continue, with Nick learning from Morgan. However, Frank Dillane asked for Nick to be...

Actress Jameela Jamil, who is known for ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’, ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ and ‘How to Build a Girl’ admits her public persona used to be “negative” and “divisive” but she refused to be “cancelled”.

The 37-year-old actress became well-known for her opinionated posts on social media on a range of subjects and she didn’t shy away from conflict online – but Jameela is adamant she’s happy to apologise if she steps out of line rather than disappearing forever, reports ‘Female First UK’.

‘Tuesday’ Trailer: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Confronts Death in the Form of a Talking Bird in A24’s Devastating Drama
Image
A24 has released a trailer for its upcoming emotional drama, “Tuesday,” which stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Lola Petticrew.

The film premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on Sept. 1 and is expected to release sometime this summer.

Louis-Dreyfus plays a loving, caring mother to a terminally ill teenage daughter (Petticrew). The two have a powerful bond, and early scenes of the “Tuesday” trailer show how they’ve embraced their circumstances with joy and humor, undaunted by the looming specter of death.

That changes when the daughter is literally confronted by death manifested in the form of a talking bird. As the story unfolds, the mother must learn to make her peace with and accept the brevity of her daughter’s time on Earth in an emotionally devastating drama about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.

Rounding out the cast is British actor and playwright Arinzé Kene.

In honor of the month-long celebration of love, acceptance, and identity for LGBTQ+ voices, stars are showing their support both as allies and members of the community in many ways - from participating in Pride events to proudly waving rainbow flags.

Paddy Considine’s Best Roles Before House of The Dragon
Game of Thrones (2011)
He’s a bit of a legend in the UK, not as well known in the US, and now he’s starring in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. But who is Paddy Considine? Well, he’s a British actor and director who grew up in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire (that’s in the West Midlands for our American friends – you’re welcome!). He’s won two BAFTA awards both as director for his short film Dog Altogether and for his feature debut Tyrannosaur which starred Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan and was one of the first movies to really introduce Colman as a heavy weight actress. In House of the Dragon Considine plays Viserys I Targaryen, the well-meaning but ineffectual leader of the Targaryen dynasty, and King of the Seven Kingdoms. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande movie review: come as you are
Image
Why am I crying at this movie? Like literally from the opening moments of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, I was sobbing. This is supposed to be a comedy, or a dramedy, at least: light, funny, diverting. So why was I bawling?

It’s because we don’t see “older” women — Emma Thompson is 63; is that old? — onscreen quite like this. As vulnerable. As searching. As confused. As sexual. As people. As, really, anything at all beyond a saintly devoted mother and/or wife and/or support mechanism for other people, usually a male protagonist. Existing purely in the shadow of others.

Fuuuuuuck that shit.

Be sure to toast your sex worker (and tip him well).

But here is Thompson’s Nancy, a retired schoolteacher, a widow, checking into a lux(ish) London hotel room as Leo Grande opens. Tiny details in Sophie Hyde’s (52 Tuesdays) direction and Katy Brand...

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent movie review: Cage, staged
Image
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent! Starring Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage!

I went into this movie knowing nothing more about it than that. And I was vindicated in my advance presumption that pretty much everything you need to know about it is encapsulated in that summation. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Much of your own personal assessment of that will depend, I suspect, upon what you think of Nicolas Cage as an actor and entertainer. And what you think of the current rather sorry state of American movies.

Our reactions to movies, of course, are never not about all the baggage we bring with us into the cinema (or however you watch a film), but that is amplified here. I am a big fan of Cage’s work when he is allowed to be honest and sincere; his performance in last year’s anti-revenge drama Pig may be his finest,...

Oscars: Academy Reveals List Of Films Eligible For Best Picture Race
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.

The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.

This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

The members-only Academy Screening Room hit the milestone with the addition of more than a dozen movies this week, including Fisher Stevens’ “Palmer,” Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” the Russo brothers’ “Cherry,” Josh Trank’s “Capone,” the documentary “Coup 53,” the Studio Ghibli animated film “Earwig and the Witch,” the international films “Funny Boy” and “Bacarau” (neither eligible in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category) and some off-the-wall selections, including “Snake White – Love Endures” and “Soorarai Pottru.”

Other late additions to the screening room have included “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The White Tiger” and “Cherry,” which were not added until January.

Gemma Arterton Says “There Was So Much Wrong” With ‘Quantum Of Solace’ Character, Bond Women
Image
Black Narcissus and How to Build a Girl actress Gemma Arterton has spoken out about her time as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace.

In a recent interview with the Sun, Arterton both defended and criticized her role as the 2008 Bond film’s Strawberry Fields. In Quantum of Solace, British Secret Service agent Strawberry Fields attempts to thwart James Bond(Daniel Craig) from accomplishing his mission, but loses guard to his suave personality and charm. Arterton’s character ultimately becomes the target of Bond’s enemies and dies smothered in crude oil.

Arterton, who has also appeared in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans, said she took the Bond role out of much needed exposure and income.

“At the beginning of my career, I was poor as a church mouse and I was happy just to be able to work and earn a living,...

U.K. Extends Covid Insurance Scheme, Adds Coverage for Actors Over 70; Distributes $21 Million in Cinema Grants
Image
The U.K.’s insurance scheme for film and television has been extended until April.

Known as the Film and TV Production Restart Scheme, the groundbreaking £500 million ($676 million) fund assures productions that they’ll receive financial support in case of Covid-related losses. The program has so far accepted 100 qualifying productions.

The initiative was first revealed over the summer, and began accepting applications in October. While the deadline was initially set at Dec. 31, it was extended to Feb. 28 in October. A two-month extension through April is fitting given the ongoing Covid-19 crisis in the U.K., where an urgent Tier 4 level of restrictions was introduced over Christmas to combat spiking caseloads. The extra time will give producers the peace of mind to plan ahead for spring shoots.

The government has also expanded the scope of the scheme to cover cast and crew over the age of 70, who were previously excluded from coverage.

Lisa Schwartz, co-president of IFC Films, announced she will be stepping down from her role at the end of the year.

“In an extraordinary year like no other, extraordinary and innovative approaches were developed which kept IFC Films at the forefront of film distribution,” Schwartz said in a statement. “I’m very proud to have been a part of the...

‘House of the Dragon’: HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Series Sets Paddy Considine to Star
Image
“House of the Dragon,” HBO’s upcoming prequel to “Game of Thrones,” has acquired one of its leading men. Paddy Considine, who starred in HBO’s “The Outsider” and “The Third Day,” will portray King Viserys Targaryen in the upcoming series.

HBO’s description for Considine’s character reads:

Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from “Game of Thrones,” good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

“House of the Dragon” was announced by HBO in November 2019. The 10-episode prequel series is co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who executive produce alongside Miguel Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis, and Sara Lee Hess. Sapochnik will direct the pilot and a handful of other episodes.

Harriet the Spy Animated Series Ordered by Apple TV+, Beanie Feldstein to Voice Title Role
Rosie O'Donnell and Michelle Trachtenberg in Harriet la petite espionne (1996)
Harriet the Spy is once again set to gather friendship-damaging intelligence, this time in the animated arena, thanks to Apple TV+’s green light for a new series.

Apple TV+ has announced its pickup for a Harriet the Spy animated series, which will directly adapt the iconic 1964 children’s novel of the same name written and illustrated by Louise Fitzhugh. The series, hailing from The Jim Henson Company and Rehab Entertainment, will have Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) voice the titular role of young Harriet M. Notably, it will take shape creatively under Will McRobb (creator of The Adventures of Pete & Pete), who serves as the show’s primary visionary as writer and executive producer. Titmouse Animation Studios will handle animation duties.

Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock (2010)
How Paul McGuigan Crafted the Visual Language of Sherlock
Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock (2010)
When Sherlock debuted a decade ago on the BBC, it was unlike anything else on television. For one, the format was a bit odd: one season of three 90-minute episodes. For another, it didn’t look like anything else on TV: Text messages that appear as part of the mise-en-scène. Edits and scene transitions that move us elegantly and efficiently through space and time. All part of a visual language that brings us into the mind of one of the cleverest characters in all of pop culture as he does what he does best: solves mysteries.

While TV is famously more of a writer’s than a director’s medium, the filmmaker behind the camera for a series pilot has an immense impact on the tone of the show. They are the creator who crafts the visual language for the series, the one whose style all subsequent series directors will...
