The world first met gyrofield because of a joke. It was 2019, and Kiana Li was a teenage music producer making beats on her computer from her bedroom in Hong Kong. She had 2,000 Soundcloud followers. “That was a good time,” she says with a smile. “I was feeling like anything could happen. I just had to make the music to see.”

Although halftime shows featuring famous singers are typically held for Super Bowls, one of the Christmas Day 2024 games on Netflix will include an exciting performance between the first and second halves. For the first time in NFL history, Netflix will be the home for the live Christmas Day football matchups in 2024. In recent years, the traditional games have aired on network TV. Now, the NFL is trusting the streaming service with its two important Christmas Day games (despite Netflix's recent broadcast issues and glitches with the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight).

Beyoncé has made history — again. She has achieved more gold, platinum, and multiplatinum certifications than any other female artist in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America. To date, she has had 103 albums and songs achieve elite commercial status as rewarded by the RIAA. Check out her latest certifications here.
Her certified works include her latest album, Cowboy Carter, which went platinum on Tuesday. Its lead single, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” went double-platinum on the same day. Those are her two major contenders going into the upcoming Grammys, where she’s up for 11 awards. That’s the most nominations ever achieved by a single album. Among the accolades she’s aiming for are Album of the Year (Cowboy Carter), Record of the Year (“Texas Hold ‘Em”), and Song of the Year (“Texas Hold ‘Em”). She’s also a first-time contender across all country categories, including Best Country Album and...

Beyonce is channeling Pamela Anderson for the best possible reason.
The 2024 election is upon us. As the entire world knew for months, the contest between the convicted felon and a fairly normal politician will come down to the wire.
Which means that every vote, especially in swing states, could make the difference between death and life for countless people.
Beyonce is adopting a Pamela Anderson look to remind everyone to vote. It’s Beywatch, baby.

Though Beyonce has not shared a music video in quite a while, she just released “Beywatch.”
It’s short. It’s somewhat political. And it features Queen Bey herself singing along to an edit of “Bodyguard,” from her Cowboy Carter album.

Beyoncé is making good on all of those rumors.
The Grammy-winning singer is set to join Kamala Harris at a Friday rally in Houston, a source familiar with the planning confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The event, which has not yet been publicly announced, will also see Beyoncé joined by her mother, Tina Knowles, and country music’s Willie Nelson.
A Harris campaign spokesperson said they could not confirm. THR has reached out to a rep for Beyoncé.
The planned appearance ends months of speculation about if Beyoncé would publicly endorse the Democratic party’s presidential nominee, given the impact the 32-time Grammy-winning artist could have on voters.
At the onset of Harris’ campaign, Beyoncé had reportedly granted Vice President Harris approval to use the Lemonade song, “Freedom.” The song, which champions Black women’s empowerment, has since become an anthem for Harris’ 2024 campaign.

Ah, celebrity relationships, where privacy can feel like a distant dream. In this arena, Kanye West, now known as Ye, frequently stirs the pot and raises eyebrows. For instance, in an earlier episode of Candace Owens’ podcast, recorded in 2022, West’s remarks certainly stirred the waters. His bold suggestion that Beyoncé should let Jay-Z cheat has led many to wonder just how far is too far, even for him.

This comment follows the infamous cheating scandal that came to light in 2016, largely ignited by Beyoncé’s groundbreaking album Lemonade. While Jay-Z has openly addressed his transgressions, West’s unsolicited advice seems to traverse beyond conventional decorum.

Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" was a pop-cultural powerhouse, attracting a mass audience larger than any of the CBS executives expected. While many critics and audience members criticized the show for being silly, unrealistic, and simplistic, it nonetheless lasted for three hit seasons, and was put into eternal syndication, staying alive in reruns for decades. What's more, the series warranted numerous TV movie sequels and spinoffs, including a 1981 TV movie wherein Gilligan (Bob Denver) and the other castaways met the Harlem Globetrotters -- called, helpfully, "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" -- and an animated series wherein the castaways became stranded on a distant planet (!). Yes, "Gilligan's Planet" is a thing.
The spinoffs retained all the original cast members, with the exception of Tina Louise, whose character, Ginger, was played by various other actors. Curiously, the Globetrotters movie was the last time an original "Gilligan's Island" project graced the screen.

A representative for Beyoncé says the singer will not attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
“Beyoncé was never scheduled to be there,” the Grammy-winning star’s rep tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The report of a performance is untrue.”
Rumors about the pop star attending and performing at this year’s DNC, celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination, have exploded online throughout the week.
On Wednesday, it was reported that Pink would be the headline act ahead of Harris’ speech. On Thursday, Pink — who performed “What About Us” with her daughter Willow — appeared to have moved up in the lineup, continuing to add fuel to the fire about a surprise guest coming later in the night.

Donald Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung seemed to take a shot at the Republican’s Democratic rival in the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris, by using her campaign song, Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” in a social media post.
On Tuesday, Cheung shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Trump walking off his plane in Michigan for a campaign event, with “Freedom” playing in the background. Night one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention featured a couple of major music moments, but maybe the biggest was from an artist who wasn’t actually in attendance: Beyoncé.

It’s not that we haven’t seen Emily Watson on screen recently — it just feels a long time since any film really made us look at her. Somehow knowing and guileless and haunted at once, her piercing, pale-eyed gaze made an immediate mark in film history with her debut in “Breaking the Waves” a quarter-century ago, but it’s been an underused natural resource of late: TV has been more generous, but the movies have confined her to stock mom-and-wife supporting roles for years. She’s a mom and wife again in “God’s Creatures,” an unexpected pivot of a sophomore feature from American duo Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer. The difference is a film with an acute interest in sidelined mothers, wives and women in general, and the result is Watson’s meatiest, most compelling showcase in an age.

Few songs have felt as monumental in 21st century pop music as Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” The song and its iconic music video served as year-defining material from Queen Bey, and it still holds up among the singer’s classic songs. Of the many awards it won, “Single Ladies” notably gave Beyoncé her first — and so far only — general field win at the Grammys: Song of the Year. But how exactly did it win, and was it the slam dunk that in hindsight we might think it was?
“Single Ladies” didn’t take much time to take off, reaching the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 just a month after its release. Soon after, it reached number-one, where it remained on-and-off for four weeks. The song was helped a lot by its video, which is one of Beyoncé’s most instantly recognizable with its iconic choreography and black-and-white photography.

Kendrick Lamar is back after a long hiatus. He finally announced a release date for his upcoming new studio album “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.” It drops on May 13. It’s probably going to top the charts and earn myriad plaudits, assuming it’s on par with his previous work, but will it get him the one thing that has eluded him: the Grammy for Album of the Year?
Who knows at this point whether he even cares that much about the Grammys. In the five years since his last studio album, “Damn,” artists like Drake and The Weeknd have criticized and/or boycotted the awards due to sketchy voting practices and Recording Academy biases against Black artists, especially in hip-hop. But it’s nevertheless the most widely recognized award voted on by industry peers, and Lamar’s continued snubs in the all-genre general field categories have been emblematic...

Few albums have had the legacy that Lauryn Hill’s solo debut record, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” has had. The critically acclaimed yet also commercially dominant record established Hill as one of the leading creatives of her time and is a milestone in music-making, especially for hip-hop and soul. “Miseducation” is also one of the few albums to be certified diamond in the United States, and the first by a female hip-hop artist to do so. And of course, to add to its innumerable list of honors, it won Album of the Year at the Grammys, along with four other awards. Watch her accept the top prize above.

Organizers behind the Oscars are pulling out all the stops to land an iconic performance from best original song nominee Beyoncé, multiple sources close to the show told Variety.
While the superstar made nary an awards campaign stop over the past months in support of her track “Be Alive,” co-written with artist Dixson for the film “King Richard,” Beyoncé’s camp has been in deep talks with producers to mount a satellite performance of the song — one that would possibly open the show, and broadcast live from tennis courts in Compton, Calif. A24 and Participant are teaming with music video auteur and artist Kahlil Joseph to adapt his video art installation “Blknws” into a feature film.
Joseph will make his directorial debut on the film that’s based on his video exhibition of the same name that is described as a conceptual news program and newscast blurring the lines between art, reporting, entrepreneurship and cultural critique.
Co-produced by the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (Land), “Blknws” was presented as part of “Made in LA 2020: a version” and was displayed at 10 different venues and locations across Los Angeles, concluding with the Hammer Museum. The installation has two side-by-side TVs that show a looped video montage of Black subjects both past and present.

But unlike the BBMAs, winners are decided by fans voting online for their favorites effective immediately. And this time those fans can vote on TikTok, which could potentially skew the winners younger. Scroll down for the complete list of nominees.

The world of "Free Guy" is familiar to anyone who's played or ever seen a video game. The attention to detail, the pace of action, characters and life in a game, it's striking how close Shawn Levy's movie is to the experience of gameplay. Free City sticks close to the rules of a role-playing game, even when its lead character is breaking those rules. Production designer Ethan Tobman, who worked on "Lemonade" and the "All the Stars" video, is one of the artists responsible for bringing the original environment to life.

Beyonce has been keeping a low musical profile over the past few months, but she’s breaking cover with a new song, “Be Alive,” featured in the new trailer for “King Richard,” the Will Smith-starring biopic on the rise of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams from the perspective of their father, Richard (played by Smith).
The song, which plays throughout the second half of the trailer, is an orchestra-laden anthem, with a powerful vocal by Beyonce. “It feels so good to be alive, that’s why I live my life with pride,” backing singers intone while Beyonce soars over the music — “Do you know how much we have pride / How hard we have to try?”
Beyonce’s projects have been relatively few and far between since the release of her blockbuster 2016 album “Lemonade.” Even though she’s released three albums, none have been full Beyonce solo albums: the 2018 tag-team album with Jay-Z,...

Kacey Musgraves is one of the Grammys’ favorite country artists of the past decade, but not this year — at least not in country categories. Her new album “Star-Crossed” was submitted for Best Country Album, but as was reported by Billboard, the academy’s genre screening committee has deemed it a pop album, where she might join another pop-country crossover act, Taylor Swift (“Evermore“). Do you think that will help or hurt her awards chances?

The Grammys are sometimes sticklers for purity when it comes to country albums on the pop borderline. When Shania Twain‘s blockbuster “Come on Over” was nominated for Album of the Year in 1999, it lost Best Country Album to The Chicks‘ twangier breakthrough album “Wide Open Spaces.” Years later Swift was nominated three times but only won for “Fearless” (2010). HBO’s Lovecraft Country earned 18 Emmy nominations this season including Outstanding Drama Series. Based on the Matt Ruff novels of the same name, the series is set in 1950s Jim Crow America where Atticus (Jonathan Majors) searches for his missing father with his childhood friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). Majora and Smollett are both nominated for Emmys in lead acting categories.
The pilot episode, titled “Sundown,” was penned by series creator Misha Green and is a nominee in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category. It begins with Atticus travelling home after receiving a letter from his father, who he has not spoken with for a long time. After reconnecting with Uncle George and Leti, the three of them set out on a road trip to find the mysterious place in Devon County known as Ardham, which isn’t found on any map.

Glynn Turman, Emmy-winning actor and acclaimed cowboy and rodeo champion, is the face of Beyoncé’s new Ivy Park denim collection, showing off classic Western wear in an ad campaign that showcases the Black cowboy experience. His granddaughter Melinda appears in the ads with him. After 60 years in show business, and 30 years competing in the rodeo, Turman let his two worlds come together in the making of the launch. “I’m in the hippest campaign,” the 74-year-old actor tells Variety ahead of the collections launch on Aug. 12. “It doesn’t get any cooler than that!

If there’s one thing I know about Gen Z, it’s that those kids go crazy for Bette Midler, so it’s only fitting that the Gossip Girl reboot’s first Halloween episode took place at Midler’s annual charity costume party. One of the big surprises at last month’s BET Awards was hearing Jazmine Sullivan’s “Heaux Tales” announced as the Album of the Year. The album certainly has the acclaim to merit the title, but the category often goes to higher-profile albums, with past winners including Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial.” So it seemed like The Weeknd’s “After Hours” or Megan Thee Stallion’s “Good News” would take home the big prize. Could this upset have implications for the Grammys? I think so.
The BET Awards aren’t necessarily a precursor for the Grammys, but they are one of the few peer-voted award shows left in music. As such, a lot of their winners indicate where the wind is blowing in the industry, particularly in rap and R&b fields. The relatively new Album of the Year category (it was...

This story about “The Story of Film: A New Generation” first appeared in TheWrap’s special digital Cannes magazine.
It’s hard to envision a more appropriate movie for the opening night of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival than Mark Cousins’ “The Story of Film: A New Generation.” The two-hour-and-40-minute documentary is a vast but idiosyncratic examination of the cinema of the 21st century, beginning with the unusual juxtaposition of Joaquin Phoenix’s stairway dance in “Joker” with the song “Let It Go” from “Frozen.” From there, the survey jumps across genres and countries, with Cousins discussing around 90 different films as he examines the way cinema has extended its language and gone in new directions over the last two decades.
But in addition to being a wry treatise on the movies of this century, the film is also a celebration of the moviegoing experience made during a time of isolation...

Even with all the havoc the coronavirus wreaked in the world, cinema could not be stopped, so why should Mark Cousins, the solicitous Irish critic-cum-tour guide whose 15-hour “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” was but a tip-of-the-iceberg survey of the medium’s infinite possibilities?
Making the most of his time in lockdown, Cousins compiled an appendix/capper to that marathon series, delivering “The Story of Film: A New Generation” on opening day of the Cannes Film Festival. This latest installment (doubtful the last) is less focused on where the medium’s been than on where it’s headed, focusing mostly on 21st-century examples, from Attenberg to Zama, that point the way forward.
At two hours and 40 minutes, it’s a longer epilogue than audiences needed perhaps, but then, no one would accuse Cousins of brevity. And for those who appreciate the director’s wide-eyed and open-hearted way of looking at cinema,...

This past spring Beyonce became the most awarded woman in the history of the Grammys, adding four more trophies to her collection which brought her to a grand total of 28. But she has quietly been amassing a pretty strong Emmy track record too. This year she could win multiple times for her Disney+ music film “Black is King.”
Beyonce voiced Nala in the photo-realistic 2019 remake of “The Lion King”; “Black is King” was inspired by that film and features songs from Beyonce’s “Lion King” companion album, “The Gift.” It was already nominated for Best Music Film at the Grammys earlier this year, and it was awarded by the Art Directors Guild. This story about “Lovecraft Country” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Even in a television landscape that includes close to 500 scripted series, HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” might cross more genres and eras than any other. But under the mindful guidance of showrunner Misha Green, production designer Kalina Ivanov and costume designer Dayna Pink found a way to transform it into one cohesive visual universe.

Scottish musical sensation Lewis Capaldi is the subject of a feature-length documentary directed by BAFTA winner Joe Pearlman (“Bros: After the Screaming Stops”) and produced by Pulse Films. The film will be shopped to buyers at the Cannes virtual market by Independent Entertainment.
The 24-year-old Capaldi has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame over the past 36 months, earning a Grammy nomination and Brit award for his debut single “Someone You Loved,” in addition to a second Brit for best new artist, and selling out an arena tour before he’d even released his debut album.
It’s a stark contrast to his life just three years ago, when he was still carrying his own gear while performing in Scottish bars and pubs. The film follows Capaldi over a five-year period, from a global headline tour to returning to his parents’ home in Scotland to start work on his sophomore album.

The 2021 Grammys sparked controversy with their nominations and snubs — par for the course for the institution, whose own former CEO Deborah Dugan alleged vote-rigging and conflicts of interests in the nominations process. But on Friday, April 30, the recording academy announced a big shakeup: all nomination review committees are gone, which has the potential to solve one of the Grammys’ biggest transparency problems.
Under the previous system, academy members at large would vote, but final nomination decisions in many categories, including the top four general field categories, were made by committees made up of 15 to 20 anonymous members. On one hand, those small panels have probably leveled the playing field for deserving acts with lower public profiles: surprise Album of the Year contenders like Brandi Carlile and Jacob Collier (“Djesse Vol. 3”) probably owe their nominations to the committees.
