Why Afton Williamson's Talia Bishop Left The Rookie After Season 1
Image
Despite having an integral role and a promising future in the ABC police procedural, Afton Williamson departed from The Rookie after season 1. The series debuted in 2018 with a premise following John Nolan (played by actor Nathan Fillion), a 45-year-old Pennsylvanian divorcee who pursues a new career as a police officer in the LAPD. His late occupation shift makes him the oldest rookie on the force, and The Rookie explores his determination to overcome ageist skepticism and the dangerously unpredictable nature of the job. In The Rookie season 1, Nolan courageously begins training in the LAPD's rookie program.

Under Afton Williamson's training officer, Talia Bishop, Nolan begins to learn the ropes and, at times, is allowed to take charge out on the field. Bishop is not only essential to Nolan's growth in the LAPD, but she also has important goals of her own - to rise in the ranks and eventually become Chief of Police.

Heidi Gardner: Where You've Seen Dan Levy's Homes.com Actress Co-Star
Image
Homes.com actress Heidi Gardner had a big moment in the Super Bowl Lvi commercials alongside Dan Levy, Lil Wayne, and Jeff Goldblum. Gardner, from Kansas City, took part in the ads with real pride, as a known supporter of her hometown sports teams and charity events. The Homes.com commercials featured stunning CGI, stunts, and celebrities, making them stand out during Super Bowl Lviii.

While many who saw the Super Bowl commercial will recognize Dan Levy, some may not know who Heidi Gardner, the Homes.com actress, is. Super Bowl Lviii took place on February 11, 2024, between the San Franciso 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, with the Chiefs winning their third Super Bowl and taking over the NFL conversation now that Tom Brady and the Patriots saga has ended. Some people won't care at all about any of that, however, and are only interested in the Super Bowl Lviii commercials.

The LA Festival of Movies Debuts with Its First Lineup, Led by ‘I Saw the TV Glow’
Image
The LA film festival scene just got a bit brighter.

The Los Angeles Festival of Movies (Lafm), co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, announced the full lineup for its inaugural festival taking place April 4-7, 2024. The new festival will screen 11 titles including one world premiere, three 4K restorations, plus a featured artist talk, documentary series, and a curated short film program. Passes are currently on sale, and single film tickets go on sale March 14.

Per the festival’s organizers, Lafm was created to redefine Los Angeles as a destination for independent film. There are many film festivals in LA, primarily led by AFI Fest in the fall, but rarely do they make independent film their only focus.

The festival’s screenings will all take place at three recently opened venues on the east side of Los Angeles: Vidiots in Eagle Rock, 2220 Arts + Archives in Historic Filipinotown, and Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown.

The B-Side – Angela Bassett
Ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy this new episode of The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we examine movies from established movie stars that have flopped at the box office, been forgotten by time, or remain hidden gems. These aren’t the films that made them famous or kept them famous. These are the other ones.

From strong early work in masterpieces like Boyz n The Hood and Malcolm X to her recent work in Netflix’s Otherhood and Fox’s television show 9-1-1, Angela Bassett has done it all. Here we focus on Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days, Wes Craven’s Vampire in Brooklyn, Walter Hill (er Thomas Lee)’s Supernova and John Sayles’ Sunshine State. It’s an eclectic foursome that reflects Bassett’s dynamic range.

Other digressions include Eddie Murphy blaming the failure of Vampire in Brooklyn on his wig and Angie confidently declaring that she...

Patricia Arquette On Embodying Real-Life Women In ‘Escape At Dannemora’ & ‘The Act; How Writing Her Memoir Feels Like “Swimming With Sharks”
Patricia Arquette at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
Last time Patricia Arquette was staring an Emmy in the face it was 2007, and she was on her second nomination for playing Allison Dubois in Medium—the pretty mom who has it all, with psychic powers to boot. What could have been a hackneyed stereotype became, in the hands of Arquette, a nuanced and moving portrait of a woman torn. She didn’t win back then, but this year she just might, with two astoundingly challenging real-life roles under her belt: abusive mom Dee Dee Blanchard in Hulu’s The Act, and dissatisfied prison worker-turned-criminal Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell in Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora.

With the two limited series shoots, and her new Netflix film Otherhood crammed into a few months, Arquette found she leaned on the network TV training she had on Medium to run that marathon. “Absolutely it prepared me for that,” she says. “I think it gives...

The Rookie: Afton Williamson Claims She Quit Series Over Racism and Sexual Misconduct On Set
Just over a week after it emerged that Afton Williamson was bowing out of The Rookie, details about why the actress is leaving the ABC series are starting to emerge.

Williamson took to Instagram on Sunday morning to confirm her departure and shed light on what really paved the way for her departure.

In the post, Williamson alleges that there was racism, bullying, and sexual harassment on the set of the series and that it was largely ignored by the producers.

Williamson claims that the issues she encountered during her one-season run on the series were with the hair department and a recurring guest star.

Related: The Rookie Renewed at ABC

As such, she alleges that she turned to the showrunner Alexi Hawley, but her claims were not investigated.

What's more, the recurring guest star was given the go-ahead to return, and that's part of the reason why Williamson is bowing out of the series.

Won Bin and Kim Hye-ja in Mother (2009)
Film Review: ‘Otherhood’
Won Bin and Kim Hye-ja in Mother (2009)
You can never quite predict what will happen when parents intrude on their kids’ lives, no matter what their ages — a fact of life that has inspired a rich subgenre of such films as “She’s Out of Control,” “Mother,” “The Guilt Trip” and last year’s surprisingly sweet “Blockers.” Based on the novel “Whatever Makes You Happy” by William Sutcliffe, director Cindy Chupack’s “Otherhood” follows three meddling mothers who travel to New York City to surprise their wayward adult sons with an unexpected visit, offers a welcome female-centered take on empty-nester syndrome in the process. Part guilt trip, part gentle ode to smothering mothers, it could be called “Why Don’t You Call Your Mother More Often: The Movie.” Despite a shaky third act, Chupack and company find great success by keeping the shenanigans grounded in a sense of pathos.

Carol (Angela Bassett), Gillian (Patricia Arquette) and Helen...

Patricia Arquette is spilling the beans on acting with a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Oscar-winning actress, 51, revealed she was the actor’s first kiss while they were both working on the 1994 film Holy Matrimony.

To satisfy the community’s elders, Havana and Peter get married but when he dies in a car accident, the communities biblical traditions dictate she marry his younger brother, Zeke (Gordon-Levitt), who happened to be 12 years old.

Even though it's the highest-grossing movie of all time, at least one person hasn't seen Avengers: Endgame. And this particular person was actually in Avengers: Endgame. Granted, the actress in question was only in the movie briefly, but still. Who wouldn't want to see a movie they were in, albeit briefly, when it's this much of a pop culture event? The answer is Angela Bassett, apparently.

Angela Bassett made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther last year as Ramonda, the mother of T'challa and one of the leaders of Wakanda. The character briefly appears in the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame. But any screen time in the biggest movie ever is no small deal. However, in a recent interview, Bassett revealed she hasn't seen it yet. Here's what she had to say.

"It's three hours long, right? I haven't seen it."

For many McU fans, the 3 hour and...

The effervescent film tells the story of three mothers who are long-time friends and empty nesters. They decide to drive to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons. ‘Otherhood’ Trailer: Netflix Brings Together Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette & Felicity Huffman For Mom-Focused Comedy
Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, and Felicity Huffman in Nos vies après eux (2019)
Ever since “Bridesmaids” became a phenomenon back in 2011, the last decade or so has seen an uptick in the number of female-driven buddy comedies. And keeping that trend alive is Netflix and its upcoming film “Otherhood.”
