Bill & Ted star Alex Winter has shared that a fourth installment in the beloved science fiction comedy franchise is in early development.
During an interview on The Sarah O'Connell Show (via ComicBook.com), Winter revealed that they have been "tinkering with a fourth movie idea that all of us like, and the guys are going to write, so we'll see." He added, "It takes us time to get these things going, and we never want to do them unless they're great." While Winter doesn't disclose who "the guys" writing the screenplay are, he is most likely referring to Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the screenwriting duo who wrote the previous three films.

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
As actors continued to strike this week, the biggest stories about performers were unrelated to the unions. First came 21-year-old YouTube and Twitch streamer Kai Cenat being charged with inciting a riot after his impromptu Union Square giveaway led thousands to storm the park. Then came the shocking announcement that 10-year-old internet rapper Lil Tay had died under mysterious circumstances, followed by the revelation a few hours later that Lil Tay was actually alive and well but the victim of a hack.
Welcome to the wild, wild west of the online creator economy that drives so much of popular culture. While SAG-AFTRA and the WGA want streaming-dominated Hollywood to provide a better support system, the internet has no infrastructure to strike against. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how documentarians have no union,...

It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a ton of new movies and TV shows every month, but you also lose a bunch of stuff, too, as the licensing agreements expire and they hop over to another streaming platform. September will be no different in that regard, either, as the company has now announced a hefty list of titles that are set to make their exit over the coming weeks.
As always, the biggest bulk of departures will go down at the end of the month, but the days leading up to then will also see some notable movies and TV shows vanish from the site, too. And below, you can see the full list of what Netflix will be losing in September.

Actor Alex Winter isn't just sitting around, waiting for Bill & Ted 3 to get made. While he hopes for that hugely anticipated sequel to finally lift off, he's been busy making a new tech documentary. And it looks intense and somewhat scary. Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain has just delivered its first trailer, and it explores the strange new world of a future that is barreling at us at full speed.
Trust Machine is opening October 26 in New York, and November 16 in Los Angeles. And it looks like another enthralling tech dive by former Lost Boys star Alex Winter, who has made quite a name for himself in the world of documentaries this past decade.
In his newest film, Alex Winter drills down on blockchain, the decentralized technology that supports cryptocurrencies. Why are banks terrified while Unicef Ventures embraces it to help refugee children? Winter follows tech innovators striking a...

When Anthony Padilla chose to leave his incredibly successful YouTube channel Smosh, the first person he told was his partner-in-crime Ian Hecox.

When Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla first joined YouTube, they each received a free iPod nano from the site for signing up. Over ten years later, and Smosh, the channel they named after a junior high inside joke, is the sixth most subscribed channel on YouTube — just after Rihanna’s Vevo, but before Taylor Swift’s.
When they arrived at the IndieWire offices last month to promote their second feature, “Ghostmates,” co-produced by Defy Media and YouTube Red, they each donned crisp black jackets and fresh haircuts. (The latter caused much hubbub from fans during a Facebook live interview.) If “Pokemon In Real Life” is your only Smosh reference point, you might not recognize the sleek young moguls on the screen.

Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla from Smosh have created a digital space where over 41 million YouTube subscribers and 39 million social media followers track their every moves and enjoy their bountiful creations. Their latest project is the film “Ghostmates,” a digital comedy that tests the terrestrial limits of friendship.
Directed by Jack Henry Robbins, the movie follows Charlie (Padilla), a socially-awkward and unemployed dude who finds a great apartment only to discover that it’s inhabited by ghost Eddie (Hecox), the previous tenant who unexpectedly died inside. Now Eddie won’t vacate the premise and can’t move on to the afterlife until he makes amends with the living, specifically his ex-girlfriend. It gets even better when ghost T-Pain – who somehow also died – unexpectedly helps Eddie move on.
“You want to be best friends,” Eddie asks the rapper. “No, no, no. I’m probably going to go find Tupac,” he replies as he ascends into heaven.

Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla of Smosh are set to star in their second motion picture, and this one will be available through YouTube Red. It’s called Ghostmates, and its trailer has now arrived ahead of its December 14th release date.
In Ghostmates, Padilla will play Charlie, a down-on-his-luck man whose life takes an interesting turn when he moves into an apartment inhabited by a ghost named Eddie (Hecox). Eddie is invisible to everyone except Charlie and T-Pain (yes, that T-Pain), which causes him to become a thorn in his new roommate’s side. Nonetheless, as we can see in the trailer, Charlie and Eddie will ultimately band together in order to improve each other’s circumstances.

YouTube's most popular comedy duo Smosh today announced a brand new feature film, Ghostmates, which serves as a follow-up to 2015’s Smosh: The Movie. Ghostmates, which premieres on YouTube Red on Dec. 14, tells the story of a luckless man named Charlie (played by Anthony Padilla) who moves into an apartment that’s haunted by a self-centered ghost named Eddie (Ian Hecox).
Eddie makes Charlie’s life difficult, according to a synopsis -- though he eventually learns that the only way he can enter heaven is by getting along and working with his new roommate. Padilla and Hecox will be joined in Ghostmates by the Grammy award-winning musician and famed auto-tune master T-Pain, who plays himself in the film.

Nobody can say YouTube’s top comedy channel, Smosh, will never do what “Saturday Night Live” does. It just did.
On August 26th, Smosh aired YouTube’s first ever live sketch show, which clocked in at just under 90 minutes and attracted up a peak concurrent viewership of 55,000 – with an average watch time of fifteen minutes. (YouTube’s broadcast of the Democratic National Convention peaked at 250,000 concurrent viewers, with a twenty-five minute average watch time.)

YouTube CEOSusan Wojcicki’s 2016 VidCon keynote delivered a simple message: If you’ve felt marginalized and seek community, come to us.
“YouTube gives people of any race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or interest a place to come together and a place to belong,” she said, emphasizing the importance of community to YouTube’s success. “When people talk about community, especially when they’re here at VidCon, the first thing they often mention are the screaming fans… But what I hope you take away when you visit VidCon isn’t just the enthusiasm, it’s the sense of belonging that exists here.”
To present YouTube’s programming slate, Wojcicki yielded the stage to Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s Global Head of Original Content, who outlined the four major projects upcoming from YouTube Red, the company’s original content subscription service, and eight new series in development. On January 11th, Smosh will share one of its most ambitious ventures so far, and a week before that date, a trailer has provided one more look. The comedy duo has offered up a second preview for Part Timers, an upcoming web series.
Part Timers takes place at Pork E. Pines, a fictional establishment that serves as an analogue to Chuck E. Cheese. Five Nights At Freddy’s this ain’t; instead of killer animatronics, Pork E. Pines will be populated by a diverse array of wacky characters, who will together engage in all sort of wacky hijinks. The new trailer teases a lot of physical comedy and plenty of the in-your-face dialogue for which Smosh is known. I don’t know what else to expect, though this Reddit thread may provide some ideas.
Smosh also released a teaser for Part Timers back in November, when the show’s release date was first announced.

One of the series born from YouTube’s recent investment in its own creative community is set to go live, and it will feature two of the video site’s biggest stars in a scripted comedy. YouTube stars Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, and Hannah Hart are reuniting for another film, this time with the support of a major Hollywood studio. Unlike that film (their first feature-length movie), Dirty Thirty will have the resources of a traditional film — a sign that Hollywood may be grooming your teen's favorite YouTube stars to become legit movie stars. Recently, Smosh (YouTube comedians Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox) had their first feature film, Smosh: The Movie, backed by 2oth Century Fox and Lionsgate; it later opened at No. 2 on iTunes and was acquired by Netflix. As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Now, not all of the adaptations on this list will see the light of day,...

New to Netflix in September are two kinds of undead: Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" and the revived-from-cancellation A&E series, "Longmire," which was saved by Netflix.
As far as movies, there's the restored version of the Oscar-winning 1962 epic "Lawrence of Arabia," Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," the first three "Rambo" films, the terrific "The Bank Job" with Jason Statham and "Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom" with Idris Elba.
There are also period dramas you might have missed from last year with Jessica Chastain ("Miss Julie") and Mia Wasikowska ("Madame Bovary") and hey, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl!"

Netflix will soon boast a new title starring two of YouTube’s biggest celebrities. The streaming video-on-demand service has picked up exclusive streaming rights to Smosh: The Movie, which will be available to Netflix subscribers starting September 22, 2015.
Smosh, the YouTube duo which consists of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, launched their first feature film on July 24 alongside VidCon. Produced by AwesomenessTV and Defy Media, Smosh: The Movie follows Hecox and Padilla as they get sucked into a “YouTube portal” and meet various YouTube stars, all in an attempt to delete an embarrassing video which could destroy Padilla’s chance at love with an old crush.
Smosh: The Movie went on sale for $9.99 on the iTunes Store and Vimeo on Demand. The flick quickly climbed the ranks of the iTunes movie charts, landing the #1 comedy spot and placing #2 in the movies category overall. Walmart then started selling Smosh: The Movie DVDs,...

Read More: Here's How AwesomenessTV is Tapping Into Social Media Stardom Netflix has picked up exclusive streaming rights for Anthony Hecox and Ian Padilla's "Smosh: The Movie," which was released on iTunes and Vimeo earlier this summer. The teen comedy is a modern day update of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and is the first feature from Hecox and Padilla, who are some of YouTube's biggest stars with over 30 million followers. Directed by Alex Winter, the movie finds the duo teleporting into some of YouTube's biggest pages (including Jenna Marbles and Grace Helbig) in order to take down an embarrassing clip of Hecox that could potentially go viral and ruin his chances of getting with his teen crush. The acquisition represents yet another deal that finds Netflix gathering content focused on the young teenage demographic. In addition to "Smosh: The Movie," Netflix has new seasons of "Degrassi" and other YouTube-orientated movies.

Note to Walmart stockers: Be mindful when placing your store’s stickers on DVDs. If you’re not careful, you may incite a Twitter hashtag. That’s what happened when a misplaced sticker blocking the head of Smosh star Anthony Padilla caused fans of the popular YouTube duo to launch a social media trend.
First, the necessary context: Smosh, which consists of Padilla and Ian Hecox, recently made the jump from YouTube to the big screen thanks to the release of Smosh: The Movie on July 24th. About a month later, on August 18th, the DVD version of Smosh: The Movie arrived at Walmart. Shortly thereafter, a Smosh fan encountered the DVD in the wild, and “flipped out a little” when she noticed a large Walmart sticker pasted on top of Padilla’s head.

The creators of Smosh have gone from 3-6 minute videos to a full feature-length film -- and making "Smosh: The Movie" was a daunting task. Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla are the brains behind the massively successful YouTube network, which includes five channels and caters to over 35 million subscribers. And while their videos rack up the views, they were definitely hesitant about going from short form to a full film. "Before going to my first day of shooting I was so nervous," Padilla tells toofab's Brian Moreno. "[I thought] 'This is gonna be feature length and there’s gonna be a famous director!' But once I started shooting it, it started feeling like very normal video we do." "The process wasn't really too different once we got on set," adds Hecox. The film was released just last week is already in the Top 10 on iTunes, ahead of movies like "Kingsman: The Secret Service" and "Hot Pursuit.

Smosh: The Movie is officially a top entertainment choice among digital viewers. On July 24, 2015, the feature film starring the long-time YouTube comedy duo comprised of Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox peaked on the iTunes comedy film chart at #1, and on the service’s overall movie chart at #2.
Produced by both Defy Media and AwesomenessTV, Smosh: The Movie follows the duo as they try to eliminate an embarrassing video of Anthony so he has a chance at love with his high school crush. With the feature film’s official release on July 23, right alongside VidCon and with a lot of press, it’s little surprise the movie managed to land such high positions on the iTunes charts.
Lionsgate obtained distribution rights to Smosh: The Movie when the film deal was first announced back in September 2014, and the movie’s trailer dropped a few months later in June 2015. AwesomenessTV also took back...

What happens on YouTube stays on YouTube. At least that's the problem for Anthony Padilla in Smosh: The Movie. The two guys find themselves on an adventure to try to get the video removed before Anthony's high school crush sees it. Anthony and Ian run into a gaggle of different YouTube stars throughout the film, including Grace Helbig, who plays a receptionist at the video sharing site's headquarters. And only E! News has an exclusive...

Exclusive: The online network and content creator is exploring theatrical distribution avenues as it builds an ambitious film business following the stunning social success last year of Expelled.
Kelly Day, chief digital officer at the company owned 75% by DreamWorks Animation and 25% by Hearst, broke the news on Thursday to attendees at the two-day Stream Market conference in Santa Monica.
“Theatrical is something we’re very interested in,” Day said. “We did a one-week theatrical release [on Expelled] but the goal of that was about building buzz.”
Day continued: “We’re definitely feeling our audience is underserved theatrically and wants to go and see movies. At some point we probably will go down that path; we’re just thinking about the best and right ways to get there. Right now we love tapping into the fanbase around the talent.”

YouTube’s plan to assist its stars isn’t limited to original web programming. In addition to the four new series it announced, a recent blog post from YouTube also revealed the site’s partnership with AwesomenessTV, alongside which it will create feature films starring YouTube content creators.
Over the next two years, YouTube and AwesomenessTV will release “several” feature films that will premiere on YouTube before they arrive anywhere else. AwesomenessTV CEO Brian Robbins, who founded the teen-focused multi-channel network, will develop and produce the film projects.
