One of the best, most underrated Marvel video games is now free on PC
Image
A relatively unknown perk to being an Amazon Prime subscriber is acess to Prime Gaming. Included with your Amazon Prime and Prime Video memberships, Prime Gaming offers benefits focusing on video games, including free monthly games, in-game items and loot, access to Amazon Luna (Amazon's cloud gaming service), and a free Twitch channel subscription.

Each month, Prime Gaming offers its members dozens of games for free. The only catch is that they are only available to play on PC.

For November, Prime Gaming is giving away one of the best Marvel games: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Released in 2021, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montreal and published by Square Enix.

It's based on the beloved comic book series of the same name, which used to fly under the radar until Marvel Studios made it mainstream with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. However, Eidos...

“It really s*cks the game didn’t sell as well as it should have”: Guardians of the Galaxy Video Game Did a Better Job Than James Gunn With Starlord Even If It Was a Financial Disaster
Image
The Guardians of the Galaxy was a welcome addition to the larger and expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it encouraged other creatives from different areas of expertise to adapt this ragtag team of scoundrels in a much more interactive medium. The superhero craze was higher than ever and gave Square Enix the idea to pioneer the crusade in gaming; unfortunately, the poor execution of their first attempt cascaded into chaos and ruined the chances of the Guardians to thrive in gaming despite being a great project.

The failure of Marvel’s Avengers started a domino effect and severely harmed this game’s chances of becoming a financial success. Despite positive reviews from fans and critics alike, the game did not sell all that well.

Image
Mark James, the Grammy-winning Songwriters Hall of Fame member behind hits like “Hooked on A Feeling, “Suspicious Minds” and “Always on My Mind,” has died. He was 83.

James died on June 8 in his Nashville home. The news was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

“Mark’s legacy and zest for life will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and through his timeless lyrics and melodies that have been the soundtrack of lovers for generations,” his family said via statement.

James won both of his two Grammys in 1963 for “Always on My Mind,” which he co-wrote with Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher. The Willie Nelson hit took home trophies for country song of the year and song of the year. James and his co-writers initially wrote the tune for Elvis Presley, who released the track without much fanfare in 1972. Nelson’s version a decade later popularized the song,...

One Of The Best Games Of 2021 Is Free On Epic Games Store On January 4
Image
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is the final free game offered by the Epic Games Store during the daily holiday giveaways. The game features the beloved team of interstellar superheroes, but with separate character iterations from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story takes a twist when their mission to capture a space beast goes awry and threatens the galaxy. Despite a poor performance financially, Guardians of the Galaxy stands out with its focus a branching narrative that allows players to shape the relationships of the Guardians.

The Epic Games Store has reached the final offering of its holiday season daily giveaways, and it arguably saved the best for last: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game from developer Eidos-Montreal didn't perform exceptionally well financially, but is one of the more endearing titles released in 2021. Gotg being the headliner for Egs's holiday giveaways is not only a good conclusion to the season,...

‘Injustice’ Director Would Like to Make a ‘Marvel vs. DC’ Fighting Game
Aaliyah at an event for 2001 MTV Movie Awards (2001)
Like it or not, superhero characters are a part of everyday entertainment nowadays. You don’t need to be a comic book reader anymore to have at least basic knowledge about the most popular superheroes, such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman. Even B-list characters such as Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad aren’t so unknown among the general audience anymore, thanks to the growing popularity of superhero characters through movies, television series, and video games.

The most popular video games based on Marvel and DC publications today are arguably Rocksteady’s ‘Batman: Arkham’ franchise and Insominac’s ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ franchise, but some other video game developers also developed games such as ‘Marvel’s Avengers,’ ‘Gotham Knights,’ and ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Also, many upcoming video games are currently in development.

These games are played from a third perspective, but there’s also a popular ‘Injustice’ franchise,...

Grammys: Female Composers, ‘Encanto’ Win Big in Visual Media Categories
Image
Female composers are shining bright at the 2023 Grammys.

Germaine Franco won best score soundtrack for visual media for composing Encanto, telling the audience she believes she’s the first woman of color to take home the honor.

That was followed by Stephanie Economou’s win for best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media — a new award at the Grammys. Economou earned the honor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok.

Franco and Economou were the solo female nominees in their categories.

Franco beat out Hans Zimmer (No Time to Die), Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog), Nicholas Britell (Succession: Season 3) and Michael Giacchino (The Batman). Economou edged out Bear McCreary (Call of Duty: Vanguard), Richard Jacques (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), Austin Wintory (Aliens: Fireteam Elite) and Christopher Tin (Old World).

The Encanto soundtrack — which topped the charts, became a platinum success and launched multiple...

The time has finally come, DC fans. As promised, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the recently appointed co-heads of DC Studios, have laid out their initial plans for the brand-new DC Universe. And yes, to be perfectly clear, it is very much going to be new — not just in terms of characters that we're going to see on screen, but in terms of the overall approach. To that end, video games are going to be a big part of the equation. While no specific video game titles were announced at this time, we did learn how the team will approach games. In short: it's all connected.

At a recent press event attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, Gunn and Safran pulled back the curtain on the first wave of the new Dcu. Speaking about video games, Safran said that "Gaming is a big part of what we're doing, and everything we...

August was the fourth month in a row to show a decline compared to the previous year, all of which contributed to the worst Summer movie season in over ten years, in which the total summer gross failed to top $4 billion for the first time since 2006. August 2017 wrapped up as the worst August in twenty years with calendar grosses delivering a combined $657.7 million from 225 movies, 35.5% behind last year's gross and failing to top $700 million for the first time since 2000. Thanks to the continued performance of Annabelle: Creation, which just topped $100 million domestically yesterday, the month did deliver a $100+ million earner, a feat that looked as if it might not happen not too long ago. Annabelle also...

Wonder Woman Just Cracked Another Major Hollywood Milestone
The summer of Wonder Woman isn't over yet, as the DC comic's Amazonian origin story passed another major, historical threshold. After 14 weeks, Wonder Woman remains in the top 15 at theaters, and is second in overall domestic box office this year (just ahead of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). According to Forbes, Wonder Woman also just blew past Iron Man 3 to become the fifth-biggest superhero movie of all-time in North America (after adjusting for inflation).

Let's put this into perspective, only The Dark Knight Rises ($448m), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459m), The Dark Knight ($534m), and The Avengers ($623m) have performed better at the domestic box office. This is a truly amazing accomplishment for Patty Jenkins (only her second feature film), and Gal Gadot (her first starring role), and DC who's struggled to construct and sustain their extended universe of superhero films (Dceu). Wonder Woman has also pretty epically...

Hitman's Bodyguard Wins Worst Labor Day Weekend Box Office in 17 Years
Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin in Last Days of Summer (2013)
Most analysts were predicting that the Labor Day weekend would be one of the worst holiday weekends at the box office in decades. And it seems those predictions were actually too generous. With no new movies opening in wide release, The Hitman's Bodyguard took full advantage, winning for a third weekend in a row with a four-day holiday weekend tally of $13.3 million. While the top 10 remained virtually unchanged, with the three-day tallies showing that six movies in the top 10 actually posted increases from the previous weekend, it still wasn't enough for this weekend to be the worst Labor Day weekend in 17 years.

Box Office Mojo reports that the top 12 movies grossed just $51.5 million, which was the lowest tally since 2000, when the top 12 took in $47 million. We also reported yesterday that the box office estimates represented an 18-year low, with analysts predicting that the four-day weekend totals for every movie in theaters won't even break $100 million,...

Jeph Loeb Defends His Vision For Marvel's Inhumans
With everything Marvel has on television, and it's a lot -- 14 series across 5 networks -- plus growing concerns about viewer fatigue, the big question is why the Inhumans (and why now)? Early reviews of Marvel's Inhumans have been less than kind, suggesting that the series may not survive its first season (ABC is slotting it on Fridays, typically a death slot). Marvel is as opaque as any other entertainment organization, so Cbr went looking for answers but they came away with more questions, unfortunately.

As we like to say at Lrm, there are only a finite number of fans out there (and a limited number of hours per week). Considering that most of the well-known A and B-list heroes were already committed to film and TV franchises, the odds were high that the Inhumans could break through and capture a viable audience. Launching Inhumans now, given competition from other Marvel...

We think it's safe to say that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was one of the most highly anticipated movies, let alone sequels, of 2017 - and now that it's finally available to watch at home we couldn't be more thrilled! We've been looking forward to re-watching this one since we first clapped eyes on Baby Groot in the first teaser trailer. The whole crew is back - Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and our new favourite, Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Where the first Guardians of the Galaxy seemed to come out of nowhere and became a huge surprise monster hit, this sequel...

This List of Every Superhero In Avengers: Infinity War Will Make You Infinitely Stoked
Jeff Bridges, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Terrence Howard in Iron Man (2008)
It seems like only yesterday that Marvel Studios was getting started with a hero that was, let's face it, merely C-list at the time. After years of film and TV properties of varying degrees of quality, which saw Marvel's heroes tied up in various licensing deals with different studios, Iron Man kicked off what would become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, a decade later, we're finally ready for Avengers: Infinity War. And it's going to be massive.

Even Iron Man director Jon Favreau publicly wondered how the grounded real world of Tony Stark could possibly co-exist with the mythological realm of Asgard, but by the time Thor, Captain America, and Hulk joined the McU with their own standalone movies, Marvel's The Avengers brought it all together and smashed box office records in the process. The mostly costume adverse McU of Netflix has kept it real with keeping it all real,...

Fantastic Four Writer Says Marvel Has Shunned Its First Family Due To Disagreement With Fox
By now, those of you who closely follow news related to comic book movies are well aware of how most Marvel characters fall under Disney’s “Marvel Studios” umbrella when it comes to the world of cinema, with Fox still laying claim to properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four. But what you may not be aware of is the strange saga that’s endured for the past few years that’s seen the publisher sideline some of its most beloved characters due to who’s in charge of film distribution.

At a time when you can walk down a toy aisle at any given retailer and see a myriad of Marvel action figures, odds are you won’t see much of the X-Men or Fantastic Four. Basically, this is a conscious effort to steer consumers of various age groups toward characters appearing in Disney movies. Sure, you may come across...

There's Confirmation That Marvel Canceled The Fantastic Four Comics Over The Film Rights
A huge rumor that has gone around for the past few years has been regarding Marvel Studios and Fox and whether or not Marvel canceled the Fantastic Four comic over film rights. Many people believe it to be true, although Marvel denies it. However, an inside source says otherwise. And while I usually take inside sources with a grain of salt, this one seems pretty reliable.

Jonathan Hickman, who written Fantastic Four comics including some of the best Marvel stories ever, recently came out and addressed the rumor stating that it's true. He confirms that the reason for Marvel canceling the Fantastic Four comic series is all because of the film rights of the characters. In an interview with Newsarama, he had this to say:

"I think it's pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn't publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox. While it bums me out,...

Iron Fist Season 2 Expected To Start Shooting This Year; Marvel TV Boss Weighs In On Showrunner Change
Will Marvel launch four standalone superhero series onto Netflix in 2018?

The industry giant is about to notch up a rather impressive achievement later this year, when Thor: Ragnarok will become the third McU instalment of 2017 – after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, of course. But if Sacha Dhawan (Davos) is to be believed, Iron Fist season 2 will begin filming in December ahead of a possible premiere sometime next year. The same release window that Marvel has purportedly earmarked for new instalments of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage.

It should be noted that Dhawan is simply making an estimation here, and when you consider that Marvel only announced plans for a second season at Sdcc last weekend – replete with a new showrunner, but more on that later – the actor’s comments shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Per Screen Geek:

It’s definitely not been confirmed whether or...

Five reasons to watch Free Fire
Five reasons to watch Free FireFive reasons to watch Free FireJenny Bullough7/27/2017 10:03:00 Am

So far 2017 has really been an embarrassment of riches at the movie theatres, with a multitude of excellent films to choose from! So much so that we've already decided our top ten of the year to date, with many more to come that we're excited for. Sometimes there are just so many movies to see—from highly anticipated blockbuster sequels like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, to buzzed-about indies like Get Out—that a true gem can be sadly overlooked.

Which brings us to Free Fire. Set in the 1970s, it takes place inside a warehouse as two criminal groups meet to make an illegal firearms deal. When the deal suddenly goes sideways, it's every man for himself. One of our most anticipated movies of 2017, it mysteriously seemed to come and go without much fanfare.

Don't Expect Punisher To Join The Defenders In Season 2
Whenever a new hero emerges on the theatrical end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can immediately, and confidently, think to yourself, "Oh yeah, I'll see that character in the next Avengers movie!" Before Doctor Strange made mention of Infinity Stones or had his post-credit scene with Thor, you knew he was destined to join the Avengers. The same went for Ant-Man, pre-Civil War. Even when I first saw Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, it was a certainty, in my mind, that eventually they too would join the Avengers for at least one adventure.

I assumed the same went for the Netflix corner of the McU. It was announced fairly early on, yet it was also very obvious, that the four characters anchoring their own series would all be back for a team-up. The same assumption went for the Punisher, who may not have his own season of a Netflix series until the fall,...

Marc Alan Fishman’s ComicMix Six: Marc’s Top Marvel Studios Movies!
To date, Marvel Studios has 16 released films in their shared universe. And while I have an affinity for all of them (truly, there isn’t a bad one in the bunch) it’s fair now to see the cream rise to the top. Having just finished Spider-Man: Homecoming this past weekend – yes I’m a suburban dad who no longer prioritizes movies as a need-to-see-on-release-day – I think I’m within bounds to pluck out my top five… until I mentioned this idea to Eic Mike Gold who denoted “We have a logo” for picking six. Natch. So, without any further preamble, here are (ranked from bottom to top) my most favoritest Marvel(ous) movies.

Definition time: I’m specifying movies only within the “Marvel Cinematic Universe.” This excludes the X-Men movies, the Fantastic Four movies, the Blade trilogy (which was awesome, honestly) any previous Spider-Man flicks, and sadly Deadpool who...

Marisa Tomei Was Crushed to Learn Aunt May's Real Age in Spider-Man
Marisa Tomei
Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei was 'horrified' when she found out how old Aunt May really is in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Aunt May is the adoptive mother of Peter Parker. She supports him and takes care of him in the early comics, while functioning as an elderly "Lois Lane" type character that is always in some sort of trouble. Whenever Aunt May is in trouble, it's Spider-Man to the rescue, and Aunt May has been in a lot of trouble over the years. She has died, been sick, been kidnapped, married to Doc Ock, etc. In recent years, writers have started to give the older Aunt May more of a personality, and a voice of reason as opposed to the damsel in distress.

According to The New York Times, 52-year old Marisa Tomei jumped at the chance to portray Aunt May when Marvel approached her with the role. In fact, she...

Spider-Man Homecoming Post-Credit Scenes: What Do They Mean?
Michael Keaton
We can all breath easy now that the latest Spider-Man reboot is a huge success during its first day at the box office. But fans looking for a little something more are starting to pour over some of the movie's finer details. There are two post-credit scenes for Spider-Man: Homecoming and they are both worth sticking around for. It is now commonplace for Marvel to tease the next installment in a franchise or introduce new characters during a mid and/or post-credit scene. For instance, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teased the inclusion of Adam Warlock in the next Guardians movie along with having fun with the characters in a non-serious manner. Homecoming is the latest movie in the McU to be released and it appears to be taking a cue from Guardians in the post-credit scenes as one is serious and one is humorous.

Warning, there are Spoilers ahead...

Spider-Man Scores Huge Opening Day Box Office on Way to $120M
Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
After a couple of dismal outings with the (not so) Amazing Spider-Man movies, Peter Parker is once again riding high at the box office. The friendly neighborhood hero has locked in $50.5 million during Spider-Man: Homecoming's first Friday in release. This comes from 4,341 screens around the country. Now, the movie is estimated to pull in $120 million or more over the course of its first three day weekend.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was already pretty much guaranteed to be a box office success this weekend, but not even Sony was prepared for these numbers. Sony quietly put out a conservative estimate earlier in the week of around $80 million domestically while other sources seem to have been right on with estimations hovering around the $120 million mark. The perceived competition from Despicable Me 3 seems to have little to zero effect on Homecoming, which makes complete sense since the latter was released last week during the holiday weekend.
