New 'Fantastic Four' Movie Crushes Tom Hanks’ Divisive Thriller Sequel On Its Way to Major Global Box Office Milestone
Image
This weekend, Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps is expected to pass what will likely be its final box office milestone. The superhero movie has had a mostly difficult time in theaters, falling vastly short of expectations. The Fantastic Four marks the third underperformer of the year for Marvel Studios, which has had an uneven run since the year 2020 altered the theatrical landscape. Although Marvel delivered the $1.3 billion hit Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, the combined revenue generated by all three of its 2025 releases has fallen short of this figure. The Fantastic Four is still hovering under the $500 million milestone worldwide, but it has now overtaken the lifetime gross of a...

Tom Hanks' Forgotten Papal Conclave Blockbuster Becomes a Streaming Hit
Image
Even as Edward Berger's Oscar-winning hit Conclave continues to rule streaming charts, albeit under unfortunate circumstances, another movie set against the backdrop of the ancient Catholic ritual is climbing up the rankings. The movie in question made nearly five times as much at the box office than Conclave back in 2009, but was hardly as acclaimed. It featured a genuine A-lister in the lead role, but remains largely forgotten. At best, it can claim to have cultivated a cult following. The movie is Angels & Demons, the sequel to 2006's blockbuster The Da Vinci Code.

Both films were headlined by Tom Hanks, directed by Ron Howard, and based on best-selling thrillers written by Dan Brown. Angels & Demons saw Hanks' Professor Robert Langdon being summoned to the Vatican in the immediate aftermath of the Pope's death. He is told that four Cardinals have been kidnapped by a man claiming to...

The David and Goliath tale gets a new epic retelling in the trailer for Prime Video’s House of David
Image
It’s perhaps the greatest underdog story next to Rocky. Heck, it’s used as a phrase to describe a match-up that seems so unevenly matched. The David and Goliath tale is one of the most popular stories in the Bible. It tells of a normal man who went up against the fiercest warrior in the land in the biggest size difference imaginable. Amazon’s House of David is a series that will retell the story in eight epic episodes. Three episodes will premiere on February 27, with one episode weekly thereafter. The trailer has just been released.

The official description reads,

“House Of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely,...

“Normally we read the script, but this time it was not necessary”: Tom Hanks’ $485M Movie Was Banned by an Entire Nation But Was Still Shot Illegally Against the Rules
Image
When Tom Hanks has been signed on to a project and the film is an adaptation of a bestselling book that almost overnight became a worldwide sensation, very little could go wrong outside the scope of production. However, in the case of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, the scandal that unfolded behind the scenes presented an entirely different scenario.

Angels and Demons (2009) [Credit: Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures]

This time, it was not the studio execs who ruined a perfectly good script with unnecessary notes or censorship. It was the Church itself that descended upon the filmmakers and defended its institution from the outrageous, blasphemous fictional novel about a fictional man obsessed with symbols and adventures.

Tom Hanks Singlehandedly Erupted the Vatican City

After the 2006 film The Da Vinci Code shook the very foundations of Christianity, the Vatican found itself imposing a ban on all things Dan Brown, including his books...

Why Tom Hanks’ The Lost Symbol Movie Was Cancelled (& Became A TV Show)
Image
The Lost Symbol film was skipped in favor of adapting Inferno due to similarities in plot and themes with previous movies in the Robert Langdon franchise. The decision to turn The Lost Symbol into a television series was based on the belief that it would be a smart choice, although the show was ultimately canceled after one season. The Lost Symbol explores the world of Freemasonry and the quest for higher knowledge. It shares thematic similarities with previous Langdon novels, Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. The decision to skip The Lost Symbol movie was made because its narrative overlapped too much with the first two films in the franchise. The Lost Symbol was transformed into a TV show to tap into its untapped potential, serving as a prequel to the Robert Langdon movies. However, the show received negative reviews and was canceled due to its confusing mythology and odd pacing,...

UK Drama Schools’ “Toxic Culture” Explored In Documentary Feature ‘Tread The Boards’
Image
Exclusive: UK drama schools are to be put in the spotlight in a documentary feature film that promises to pull the curtain back on their “toxic culture.”

Tread The Boards premiered at the BAFTA qualifying Rhode Island International Film Festival last week and features interviews with former students from prestigious British schools.

Billed as a cross between Cheer and Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons, the film is directed by Katie Gibson, a former actress who attended London’s ArtsEd drama school, which boasts Andrew Lloyd Webber as its president.

Gibson told Deadline that she experienced bullying and a sexualized culture during her time at ArtsEd and started making the film after a 2021 barrister-led investigation into the school.

Gibson said she left ArtsEd as a “shell” of her former self and, after speaking to other graduates, she realized that they had similar experiences at their own schools.

“It’s a secret world behind a curtain.

This was supposed to be the first “business as usual” summer movie season after Covid. Then the WGA strike came.

The Hollywood writers’ strike effects on TV were swift and obvious, like the shuttering of late-night television. The effects on the movies could play out over a far longer timetable, insidiously bleeding an already wounded industry.

Everyone agrees, with a few specific exceptions, that moviegoers returning to theaters won’t see the strike. “The movies for 2023 and 2024 have pretty much been written. In many cases, they’ve already been filmed,” AMC CEO Adam Aron noted Friday on his company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts. He was just the latest in a string of executives to reassure Wall Street of the strike’s limited impact.

But more labor unrest is on...
