Can't Get Enough Out of Solo Leveling? This Underrated Anime From 2024 Deserves Your Love
Image
Despite there being very different stories and settings, Go! Go! Loser Ranger has a lot in common with Solo Leveling. Both anime explore dark and morally ambiguous topics to enhance their setting and rely on very interesting world building as a hook. Solo Leveling's Sung Jinwoo and Go! Go! Loser Ranger's Footsoldier D start off as underdogs who are climbing their way up in unexpected ways. D has nothing like the system helping him along the way, but being a monster in a world of humans gives him an edge.

Both these worlds were dramatically changed when monsters started showing up. For the hunters of Solo Leveling, gates pose a present threat that humanity has no way of permanently stopping. Contrary to this, the Dragon Keepers have defeated the monsters in Go! Go! Loser Ranger. In both anime, there's far more going on behind the scenes than would first appear.

‘SNL’ Weekend Update Trashes Trump’s Inauguration, Musk’s ‘Nazi’ Salute
Image
Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update addressed Donald Trump’s second inauguration, his dozens of controversial executive orders, and the salute by Elon Musk that has neo-Nazis and white nationalists overjoyed.

Co-anchor Colin Jost noted that during his oath, Trump was seen not placing his hand on the Lincoln Bible.

“Well, he tried to,” Jost said, “but the Bible screamed.”

“During his address, President Trump said he was changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Jost went on. “And, like you, Hillary Clinton could...

Big Things Comes in Small Packages: The Academy Rolls Out Its List for the Year’s Best in Short Films

Doc Short Contenders Give Voters Plenty to Ponder

The 15 films that made the shortlist in the Oscars’ documentary short category are all powerful and thought-provoking, making the competition for an Academy Award nod incredibly stiff this year.

Leading the charge are “Incident,” “The Only Girl in the Orchestra,” “The Quilters,” “Death by Numbers” and “Keepers.”

The first 89 seconds of Bill Morrison’s police brutality doc “Incident” is silent. Security footage captures a street in Chicago on a July afternoon in 2018. Minutes later, a man is dead. Through a series of recordings of CCTV and police bodycam footage captured from different vantage points, Morrison offers a raw look at the Chicago police shooting of a Black man. The 29-minute New Yorker film won the best short documentary award at the 2023 IDA Documentary Awards and garnered a spot on the influential Doc NYC shortlist earlier this year.

Quick Links All the Disney Villains Try Taking Over the World Why Was Kingdom Keepers Stopped?

Most of us know by now that numerous high-profile Disney movies are based on books. Some of these include 1989s The Little Mermaid (which was based on an 1837 fairy tale), 1991s Beauty and the Beast (inspired by a 1740 novel), and Aladdin (originally composed in the late 1200s). Even though these classics are trademarks of both the Walt Disney Company and the animated genre as a whole, a novel franchise that was born within the last 20 years could have been Disneys best movie to date. Written by Ridley Pearson, the plot involved iconic villains such as Maleficent, Captain Hook, Cruella De Vil, and "the most powerful demon Walt Disney ever created," trying to take over both Disney Theme Parks and the world. Interested to hear more?

Spanning over 11 books from 2005 to 2014, the Kingdom Keepers series...

The Umbrella Academy: The Keepers, Explained: Are Jean And Gene Dead?
Image
After facing time-traveling assassins, the timeline preserving Temps Commission, and an alternate reality version of the Hargreeves siblings as adversaries, the Umbrella Academy squares off against their new antagonist(s) in the fourth and final season, in the form of a widespread cult known as ‘The Keepers’. Constituting fairly regular humans suffering from timeline sickness, the Keepers might lack supernatural flair and gusto, but their steadfastness, belief in a singular cause, and unity make them the most formidable threat the superhero group has had to face so far. By the end, the Keepers succeed in their objective as well, having a significant influence on the ending of the narrative as a whole, which makes it necessary to have a detailed discussion about the group’s origin, motive, and future in the context of the final chapter of the series.

Why Power Rangers Fans Need to Watch This New Anime
Image
For 30 years, the Power Rangers franchise has been a staple of American popular culture, with an entire generation growing up with the brand's classic iteration. Its source material is footage from the Japanese Super Sentai franchise, with both properties having their own tropes and archetypes that are well-known among international audiences. These concepts usually aren't translated into anime, but one new series takes them and turns them completely upside down for a morphenomenal take on the genre audiences think they know.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger! makes its parodying nature obvious from the very title, and the satire on Power Rangers, Super Sentai and the "tokusatsu" genre as a whole goes far beyond the name. Bringing familiar narrative elements into anime while subverting them entirely allows the series to stand out among the morphing grid. Likewise, it also does to the distinctly Japanese take on superheroes what anime such as My Hero Academia...

Evil, in the form of the alien supervillain, not only gives fans someone to hate but also provides a challenge the Power Rangers must struggle to overcome. Ultimately, the hope is that the Power Rangers will triumph over the evildoer and all can live happily ever after.

Trump Slammed By Mike Pence For Saluting Jan. 6 Prisoner Choir’s Rendition Of The National Anthem At Rally
Image
Former President Donald Trump was criticized by his own former vice president, Mike Pence, for saluting prisoners who participated in the January 6 Capitol riot and calling them “hostages” during the introduction of his Dayton, Ohio campaign rally.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the horribly and unfairly treated January 6th hostages,” the moderator of the rally on March 16 stated over the loudspeaker.

Trump raised his right hand and saluted as the “January 6 Choir” sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” The choir is composed of Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and others imprisoned for helping to advance the failed insurrection.

The rally started with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by January 6 defendants serving time in the Washington, D.C., jail.

“You see the spirit from the hostages, and that’s what they are: hostages,” Trump claimed at the rally. “They’ve been treated terribly and very unfairly. And you know that and everybody knows that.

The Vanishing Has One of the Most Disturbing Endings Ever Made
Image
The Vanishing, or Spoorloos, is a crime thriller constantly on the verge of becoming a horror movie, delivering one of the most disturbing endings of all time. The Dutch film revolves around a couple, Rex and Saskia, whose promising bike holiday is disrupted when Saskia stops at a gas station to buy drinks and disappears without a trace. Three years later, Rex is still looking for her and is contacted by a stranger who claims to know Saskia's whereabouts.

The brilliant movie inspired an American remake directed by George Sluizer himself, the director of the original film, gathering renowned movie stars such as Kiefer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges in the lead roles. However, it lacks the dreadful mood of Spoorloos and its cold, nearly impersonal tone, which leads up to an unnerving twist.

The Vanishing Is the Perfect Example of a Slow Burn

‘Dear Jassi’ Review: Tarsem Singh Dhandwar’s Tender Story Of Star-Crossed Lovers Lands A Killer Blow – London Film Festival
Image
Dear Jassi arrives with echoes of Madonna’s 1989 hit “Dear Jessie” and its sugary promise of pink elephants and lemonade, but none of that turns out to be forthcoming in Tarsem Singh Dhandwar’s beautiful and brutal sixth feature. Instead, we have perhaps the most disturbing bait-and-switch since George Sluizer’s original iteration of The Vanishing, a Punjabi Juliet-meets-Romeo story that’s much harsher that any so-far-filmed version of West Side Story and a whole lot funnier. This dissonance takes a while to reveal itself, but when it does, the shock is visceral. The fact that almost everything is true is the killer blow, and the shockwave of that reverberates through the poignant final credits, a static shot that forces the audience, or maybe just simply dares them, to think about what they’ve just seen.

Immigrant stories have been big in 2023, but the troubling core of Dear Jassi is actually an emigrant story,...

Stephen King's Rose Red Cast & Character Guide
Image
Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red had mixed reviews upon release but has gained new popularity since being added to Hulu's catalog in 2023. The miniseries allowed upcoming actors like Nancy Travis, Kimberly J. Brown, and Melanie Lynskey to showcase their abilities. Matt Keeslar played the role of Steve Rimbauer in Rose Red and has since had notable roles in films like Scream 3 and series like Dune.

Stephen King's underappreciated miniseries Rose Red includes a number of dynamic characters and a talented cast to bring them to life. In 2002, ABC released a three-part miniseries with a story by King. The show follows Dr. Joyce Reardon, a paranormal psychology professor who brings a group of psychics to the Rose Red mansion in hopes of finding scientific data that proves the existence of the paranormal. Once there, the team faces the evil spirits tethered to the house due to previous deaths.

Loki Season 2 Trailer Breakdown: Time Is Running Out On The God(s) Of Mischief
Image
If time travel were truly possible and fans today could travel back 15 years to tell their younger selves that Loki, the God of Mischief, would end up becoming one of the most popular characters in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- big enough to merit two seasons (and counting) of his own show -- well, they'd probably get laughed back into their regular timeline again. But with the benefit of hindsight, the recipe for success behind "Loki" is easy to see. Take one of the most talented and charismatic actors currently working in Tom Hiddleston, add in a buddy comedy dynamic with Owen Wilson's Time Variance Authority agent Mobius, and wrap it all up in a "Doctor Who"-inspired romp through different timelines in a setup for Marvel's newest and baddest villain, and it's no wonder why "Loki" took off like it did.

Amid all the hijinks of season 1 of "Loki,...

The Modern Classics That Inspired Talk To Me's Directors [Exclusive]
Image
The filmmakers behind the year's most terrifying horror film, "Talk to Me," have a fascinating backstory that rivals any of the supernatural chills and thrills in their feature film debut. The Australian sibling duo of Danny and Michael Philippou first got their start as YouTubers, as we've previously written about here. But don't let their humble beginnings fool you. The pair of movie aficionados certainly didn't shy away from wearing their cinematic influences on their sleeves when it came time to write and film "Talk to Me."

The filmmakers revealed as much during a recent interview with /Film's Jacob Hall. In our review of the film, Chris Evangelista made note of the pervasive Sam Raimi influence, particularly through the usage of gore and makeup that feels of a piece with "The Evil Dead." But as it turns out, their specific inspirations for their newest film go even deeper than that.

The Killer: John Woo starts production on the remake of his own classic action film in Paris
Image
Very rarely do filmmakers helm the remakes of their own films. In these cases, they are movies like 1993’s The Vanishing, in which director George Sluizer remade his original 1988 international thriller of the same name for an English-language adaptation in the United States with American stars Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Nancy Travis. Action legend John Woo would do the same, albeit to a smaller degree, as he remade his 1991 film, Once a Thief, into a TV movie in 1996.

The guns-a-blazing maestro is at it again. This time, with the movie that many regard as his best film, 1989’s The Killer, which starred his frequent collaborator, Chow-Yun Fat. According to World of Reel, Woo has already started production on the remake of The Killer, which will be taking place in France. The film is set to star Nathalie Emmanuel and Omar Sy. Emmanuel has had little slivers of action displayed...

This '80s Movie Is Quiet Horror at Its Most Terrifying
Image
Watch an average modern American horror movie and you’re bound to be inundated with a lot of noise. Loudness is not innately a bad thing, nor are pronounced jump scares. But lackluster scary films can often end up being so underwhelming because they mistake loudness for creepiness. Something like Smile or Fall will often just ratchet up the volume of the score or pile on noisy jump scares instead of coming up with actual substantive frights. If one wants a masterclass in how to make quiet horror cinema that chills you to the bone, look no further than the 1988 George Sluizer feature The Vanishing. Hailing from the Netherlands, The Vanishing proves utterly terrifying even without resorting to jump scares or superfluous loudness.

New Mab film projects hitting the market include:

This Is the Kit Announces New Album Careful of Your Keepers, Shares “Inside Outside”: Stream
Image
Kate Stables has readied a new This Is the Kit album called Careful of Your Keepers. The LP arrives on June 9th via Rough Trade, and as a preview, new single “Inside Outside” is out now.

Careful of Your Keepers is named after the seventh track on the record, which refers to, as Stables put it in a press release, “The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.”

Stables teamed up with her usual band for the LP, as well as Jesse D. Vernon, who arranged a horn quartet. Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys produced the project, and both Stables and Rhys himself spoke excitedly about the collaboration in a statement.

“I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow,...

15 Most Unsettlingly Realistic Horror Movies
Image
Nothing really hits the audience as hard as a realistic horror movie. There are plenty of great horror movies that focus on supernatural terror or creepy monsters. However, sometimes the scariest thing a movie can be is grounded in reality. If the audience watches the horror unfold on screen and knows something like that could actually happen in real life, it can be quite unsettling. These movies rely simply on the evil that can exist in the real world and the threats that are very much possible. These types of stories will deliver the typical horror movie thrills with scares that may stay with viewers a little longer.

It is always fun to go to a movie and watch vampires, alien creatures, or ghosts delivering the scares on the big screen., However, when a person leaves the theater, there is never a sense that Dracula will appear out of the...

Jason Seagraves Departs Cavalry Media As SVP Development; Management & Production Firm Under Financial Stress
Image
Exclusive: We’ve heard from sources that Jason Seagraves has exited Cavalry Media as their SVP of Development.

Seagraves is the second executive to leave the management and production company following co-founder Dana Brunetti, which we first reported.

Seagraves, I understand, has both Brunetti and Cavalry Media co-founder Keegan Rosenberger’s approval to transition to a producorial role on his projects, one being the teen drama series Motorheads which is set up at Amazon Studios with John A. Norris as showrunner.

Motorheads is a coming-of-age ensemble drama, set in blue collar steel town that’s trying to reinvent itself. The show follows as its denizens navigate the hierarchy and rules of high school, while others are running from a dark past looking for new beginnings.

Before Cavalry Media, Seagraves was at Cross Creek Pictures as VP of Production and Development. There he steered such movies as the Oscar nominated Denzel Washington movie Roman J. Israel,...

Gerard Butler's Ridiculously Named Plane Movie Gets Surprisingly Good Reviews
Image
Plane reviews are in, and they are looking surprisingly good. Action star Gerald Butler plays a commercial pilot who, after his plane is damaged by a lightning strike, makes an emergency landing on the war-torn Island of Jolo in the Philippines. Soon after, most of his passengers are taken hostage by heavily armed rebels, forcing him and a fugitive on board, played by Luke Cage's Mike Colter, to attempt a daring rescue mission. The Plane trailer went semi-viral online when it was released late last year because of its hilariously generic title, coupled with the ironic fact that most of the movie takes place on the ground.

Now, the first Plane reviews are in, and they are surprisingly praising Gerald Butler's latest action movie. At the time of writing, Plane is flying high above the certified fresh threshold on Rotten Tomatoes in the 70 percent range. While most of the reviews...

‘Reno 911!’ Lives on With Emmy-Nominated Television Movie ‘The Hunt for QAnon’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Since Reno 911! was canceled in 2009, following its six-season run on Comedy Central, Robert Ben Garant (who starred in and co-created the series alongside Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver) has always had a feeling the show had a second life. “Reno had been off the air for over 10 years,” says Garant of the effort to find a new home for the Cops spoof, which followed a bumbling crew of deputies in the Nevada city who attempt to uphold law and order — but often create their own disorder. “We edited together a highlight reel and tried to sell it, and everybody passed.”

That is, until Quibi came calling, and Garant and his colleagues realized that the now-shuttered shortform video platform would be the perfect place for the show. “We had one of our editors cut one of the old episodes down to seven minutes,...

The Good Neighbor Trailer: An American Remake That Lays The Menace On Thick
Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan in Keepers (2018)
In the not-so-grand tradition of "The Vanishing," "The Grudge," and "Delivery Man," German filmmaker Stephan Rick has opted to step behind the camera for the English-language remake of his foreign-language original film. Fortunately for Rick, his 2011 thriller, "Unter Nachbarn," never received a U.S. release; ergo, the twists and turns of this fiendish-looking yarn, now titled "The Good Neighbor," will be completely new to the vast majority of audiences. How fiendish-looking? See for yourself!

Luke Kleintank and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers play a pair of friends who cap off a triumphant night on the town by running over and killing a young woman on a bicycle....

Danielle Deadwyler has been cast in the lead role of the J.J. Abrams HBO series “Demimonde,” Variety has learned.

The show was first reported to be in development back in 2018, though few details were available at the time. Now, it is known that the series focuses on Olive Reed (Deadwyler), a woman who is torn away from her husband and daughter in a brutal scientific accident. She is forced to unravel a conspiracy to reunite with her family, now lost to a dark, distant other world.

This is not the first time Deadwyler has been in an HBO or HBO Max series. She most recently appeared in HBO Max’s “Station Eleven” and also had a role in the hit HBO limited series “Watchmen.” Her other TV roles include “Atlanta,” “P-Valley,” and “The Haves and the Have Nots.” On the film side, Deadwyler turned in a standout performance in the...

The Devil to Pay review – revenge is a dish served tepid in hillbilly thriller
Danielle Deadwyler
Danielle Deadwyler adds emotional force to a bland script as a farmer who takes on a criminal family to protect her own

At times, this slow-burn indie hillbilly thriller feels like a heavy-footed stomp through the genre. It’s set in the Appalachian mountains, where a close-knit clannish community lives by its own rules; a lawless backcountry in which a lone woman takes on the meanest family on the mountain to protect her own, banjos strumming on the score. It’s not exactly strong on originality or authenticity. But what The Devil to Pay does have going for it is a performance of real emotional force by Danielle Deadwyler (best known for supporting roles in films such as the Netflix western The Harder They Fall).

Deadwyler plays Lemon Cassidy, a farmer eking out a living with her husband and little boy. Life is tough, and gets tougher still when Lemon...

Everything Steven Soderbergh Watched and Read in 2021
Image
It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2021––another year in which he not only released a new film, but shot another (and produced the Oscars)––he still got plenty of watching in.

Along with catching up on 2021’s new releases, he took in plenty of classics, including Jaws, Citizen Kane, Metropolis, The French Connection, and Lubitsch’s Ninotchka and Design For Living. Early last year, he also saw a cut of Channing Tatum’s Dog, which doesn’t arrive until next month. He also, of course, screened his latest movies while in post-production, with three viewings of No Sudden Move and three viewings of Kimi, which arrives on February 10 on HBO Max and the first look of which can be seen below.

Check out the list below via his official site.

‘Loki’ Review: Episode 4 Ping-Pongs Between Life and Death, Beginnings and Endings — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Loki” Episode 4, “The Nexus Event.”]

Through four hours of “Loki,” the most remarkable aspect of Marvel’s third so-called television series is how quickly it can pivot. The Time Keepers are dead! No, they’re just androids. Loki is finally going to say something from the heart! Oh wait, he’s dead — except he’s not, so long as you watch the credits. These little twists and turns are standard storytelling in the MCU and beyond; what’s frustrating is that so many of them mean so little, especially when it comes to characters.

Take Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius. After sitting out last week’s episode, everyone’s favorite Tva analyst returned in a big way, only to say goodbye in similar fashion. He kicked things off by saving Loki (Tom Hiddelston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) from a falling planet, using their tender kindling of what’s later called a “sick,...

Owen Wilson, Tara Strong, Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Wunmi Mosaku in Loki (2021)
Marvel’s Loki Episode 4 Ending and Post Credits Scene Explained
Owen Wilson, Tara Strong, Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Wunmi Mosaku in Loki (2021)
This article contains Loki episode 4 spoilers.

Loki episode 4 is, well…we’re just gonna say it…the best episode of the series so far, by far. It rivals even the best chapters of WandaVision in its ambition, scope, and general batshittery. And a good chunk of that comes in the final moments, as well as what comes after.

That’s right, folks. Loki episode 4 engages in that proudest of MCU traditions: a post-credits scene.

Let’s try and make sense of all this, shall we?

Is Mobius Dead?

In what is perhaps the first truly heartbreaking moment on this show, Owen Wilson’s fan favorite Mobius M. Mobius gets himself deleted after confronting Judge Renslayer about the true nature of the Tva, its agents, and the Time-Keepers. Unlike the other Minutemen, notably C-20 and B-15, Mobius hasn’t had a Sylvie-assisted memory reactivation, but he’s savvy enough to realize...
