It’s been seven years since Streep was last nominated for an Oscar for her work in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” in 2018.

Seven years without Streep is a long time.

Back then, she broke her own record as the most-nominated actress in Oscar history. Her best actress nod for playing Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham landed Streep her 21st Oscar nomination. Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are tied in second place with a dozen each.

Streep has won Oscars for “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1979 (supporting actress), “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 (best actress) and “The Iron Lady” in 2011 (best actress).

The last time she went missing from the Oscars for a long period of time was in the 1990s when she had a gap between her nominations for “Postcards From the Edge” in 1991 to her best actress nod in 1996 for “Bridges of Madison County.

From Austin Butler to Renée Zellweger, the Globes have long rewarded actors not known for their musical abilities who decided to show off their chops on screen in biopics. This year, that historical trend could boost the chances of two nominees: Timothée Chalamet for Best Film Drama Actor in A Complete Unknown and Angelina Jolie for Best Film Drama Actress in Maria.

In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet plays Bob Dylan. The film follows the legendary singer-songwriter from January 1961, when he moves from Minnesota to New York City, to his 1965 concert at the Newport Folk Festival, where he notoriously introduces electric instruments. Chalamet does all of his own singing in the film, refusing to lip-synch along to Dylan’s original recordings. As of today, the actor ranks second with 4/1 odds.

Celebrities becoming the victims of some unexpectedly uncomfortable and embarrassing moments has been a bit too common in Hollywood, sometimes resulting in some of the most hilarious moments of all time. Exclusive: David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral) has joined the cast of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s upcoming ballet dramedy Étoile as a series regular, Deadline has learned.

Haig was cast ahead of production on Season 1, which began in January, but not previously announced. Details on his role are being kept under wraps.

Set in New York City and Paris, the eight-episode first season of Étoile follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.

Étoile is created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, who writes, directs, and serves as executive producer.

Haig joins a cast that includes the Emmy-winning Marvelous Mrs. Maisel alum Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gideon Glick, Simon Callow, Lou de Laâge and David Alvarez.

Exclusive: Molly C. Quinn (Castle) and Cameron Cuffe (Krypton) have wrapped on The Weight, a psychological thriller marking the feature directorial debut of American Gods producer Sallyanne Massimini, who co-wrote the script with Thomas Care.

Every year, there are outstanding performances that horror fans have come to accept probably won’t get the awards recognition they deserve due to their genre. Obviously, there are notable exceptions; but for every Kathy Bates in “Misery,” there’s Toni Collette in “Hereditary.”

It’s unfortunate that horror isn’t held in higher esteem, as it’s genuinely one of the hardest to get right. It’s a tricky balance, and it can easily go awry. One false move and your over-the-top turns will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. This year, in particular, has been great not only for genre films but also for the actors in them. In a just world, here are some of this year’s actors who would be recognized by Oscar voters.

Perhaps the strongest shot at breaking into the race, the always reliable Grant is perfectly cast as Mr.

Dune: Part Two star Rebecca Ferguson recently revealed that she was screamed at on the set of a film early in her career by a huge star. December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)

While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?

The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

In some ways, the nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards did seem like a breath of fresh air compared to the dismal nomination choices of past years. For ages, the beleaguered awards fixture has been a punchline for inexplicable nominations that seemed to emphasize star power over anything else. Remember when The Tourist was nominated for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy? How about when the 2005 edition of the ceremony nominated the remake of The Producers for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy? Then there was the 74th Golden Globe line-up for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, which placed La La Land and 20th Century Women alongside titles like Florence Foster Jenkins and Deadpool. Most notably, of course, there are the long-standing criticisms of the Golden Globes and its perceived exclusion of works by people of color.

Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest contenders for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s smash hit “Barbie.” The Warner Bros. movie follows Margot Robbie‘s titular Barbie as she leaves Barbie Land for the real world in search of answers after suffering an existential crisis. Gosling’s performance as Ken has brought him plenty of plaudits, leading to a strong case for Best Supporting Actor in this year’s Oscars race.

Kate Winslet is returning to HBO, but she’s a long way from Easttown.

The Oscar-winning actor is leading the upcoming HBO limited series “The Regime,” which was teased during the April 12 Warner Bros. Discovery streaming press event.

The lush teaser is filled with mystery and political intrigue, and the official logline doesn’t give too many clues, simply saying that the series “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.”

Oscar-winning actor Helen Mirren refused to address the controversy around her casting as Israel’s iconic Prime Minister Golda Meir in Guy Nattiv’s biopic during the movie’s press conference at the Berlinale.

When asked to comment on the backlash and the issue of authentic casting, Mirren left it to Nattiv and her co-star Lior Ashkenazi (“Footnote”) to stand up for her while she smiled shyly.

Mirren is neither Israeli nor Jewish, and critics have argued that she shouldn’t have been cast as Israel’s most important female figure.

Nattiv said that when he met Mirren, he instantly felt like he was in the presence of a “family member” — an “aunt” who had the “Jewish chops to portray Golda.”

Los Angeles, Feb 19 (Ians) The top prize at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards – that of the Best Theatrical Feature was bagged by ‘The Daniels’ – Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the duo behind the sci-fi comedy ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

‘The Daniels’ became the third directing duo ever to win, reports ‘Variety’.

‘The Daniels’ beat out Steven Spielberg, who holds the record for the most nominations and wins, at 13 and three, respectively.

Spielberg was gunning for his fourth trophy, for the semi-autobiographical ‘The Fabelmans’.

“This has been an incredible year for our little film that somehow keeps going,” Kwan said, quoted by ‘Variety’.

This was the first DGA Award nomination for the filmmakers. The DGA boasts a voting body of around 19,000 members. Over its 75-year history, the DGA Awards has been the most reliable barometer for the Oscars’ best director prize.

Skin is a subject Israeli-American director Guy Nattiv touches on frequently in his work. He has directed no fewer than two (unrelated) films titled “Skin,” one feature-length, one short. The former, which premiered in Toronto in 2018, saw Jamie Bell win rave reviews as a white supremacist who tortuously has his tattoos lasered off after managing to break away from the Neo-Nazi cult that raised him. The latter, which Nattiv produced alongside his wife, Jaime Ray Newman, won the Oscar for live action short in 2019.

Now Nattiv returns with “Golda,” his first feature since Toronto and another character study, this time of Israel’s fourth prime minister, Golda Meir, who is played by Helen Mirren. The film, which also stars Liev Schreiber and Camille Cottin, is set during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when a coalition of Arab states launched a surprise attack on Israel on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Armor Wars will explore the character of James "Rhodey" Rhodes in more depth, according to Don Cheadle. Introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008's Iron Man as Tony Stark's long-suffering best friend, Rhodey was originally played by Terrence Howard before Cheadle took up the role for Iron Man 2 in 2010. Cheadle has portrayed Rhodey ever since, earning the moniker of War Machine in Iron Man 2 and fighting alongside Stark in that film and many thereafter. While Rhodey has been around since Phase 1 of the MCU, he has never headlined a solo-film or gotten a television series, which finally changed when Armor Wars was announced in 2020.

Armor Wars was originally set to become part of the growing Disney+ Marvel television catalog, announced as a six-episode limited series. However, the project was reported to have been retooled into a feature-length film in September due to creative changes and the demands of the story.
