An intriguing creative duo are in line to collaborate on The Seven Five, a crime drama that could mark Ben Stiller’s return to film directing.
According to Jeff Sneider (via World Of Reel), Ben Stiller has signed up to helm The Seven Five, a crime drama that will be ‘set in the 1980s in New York City. The story’s about a corrupt police precinct and its ringleader, Michael Dowd, who was arrested in 1987 with a handful of other dirty cops who stole money and drugs. He served 14 years in prison, and his arrest exposed widespread corruption within the NYPD.’
It sounds intriguing, right? Add to this the talents of The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White in the lead role and you could have something special. Allen White was exceptional in last year’s The Iron Claw and his work in TV’s The Bear is no less remarkable.

From the kitchen to corruption, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is now being eyed for The Seven Five, a movie based on the 2014 documentary of the same name to be directed by Ben Stiller.
While the role that White is apparently circling for The Seven Five has yet to be revealed, it was reported back in 2020 that the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were linked to play Michael Dowd, who was considered the “ringleader” of a net of corruption that ran through the New York City police department in the 1980s. One could assume that neither of these casting decisions worked out or that White could be in talks for the role of Patrick Eugene McKenna, another key player in the NYPD.
Regardless of Jeremy Allen White’s role at this time, this isn’t the first attempt to get the documentary turned into a narrative. An...

Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller have been in each other’s orbit for three decades without working together in any sort of meaningful capacity, which seems strange given their very similar career paths. Stiller was hired as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live in 1989 but left after just four episodes, a year before Sandler became a regular fixture on the show.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, both actors became two of the most popular and bankable comedy stars in Hollywood after headlining a succession of box office hits, but they only crossed paths when Stiller made an uncredited cameo in Happy Gilmore, and he reprised his brief role as Hal L. a quarter of a century later in the opening scene of Hubie Halloween, although they did play estranged half brothers in forgotten 2017 dramedy The Meyerowitz Stories.

Ben Stiller is ready to take on some crooked cops with The Seven Five, a film based on the documentary of the same name. The doc, which is pretty damn great, tells the story of some very, very dirty NYPD cops who reigned in the 1980s. At one point, White Boy Rick director Yann Demange was going to direct […]

To say that documentarian Tiller Russell has a knack for discovering unconventional characters is an understatement. From NYPD cops running a cocaine ring (2015’s The Seven Five), to a Russian mobster, a Cuban spy and a Miami playboy conspiring to sell a Soviet sub to the Cali cartel (2018’s Operation Odessa), the filmmaker has more than earned his gonzo doc bona fides. And the weird winning streak continues with the director’s four-part docuseries The Last Narc, premiering on Amazon Prime Video today. The story catalyzing Russell’s latest is one familiar to any viewer of the first season of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico — the 1985 kidnapping […]...

Amazon Prime Video is gearing up to release the four-part docuseries “The Last Narc,” and the streaming service’s trailer promises new insights about the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Per Amazon, “The Last Narc” tells the story of a fallen hero, the men who killed him in 1985, and the one man who risked everything to find out what really happened and why. Highly decorated special agent Hector Berellez, who was assigned to lead the DEA’s investigation of Camarena’s murder, peels back the layers of myth and propaganda to reveal the bone-chilling truth about a conspiracy that stretches from the killing fields of Mexico to the halls of power in Washington, D.C.

The world of Mexican drug cartels continues to be an interesting gambit for entertainment. Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico” series has garnered quite the following over its three seasons, in spite of controversy including their location manager being murdered back in 2017, and with “Narcos: Mexico” giving Diego Luna a chance to shine other streaming services are following suit.
Amazon Prime is taking a different route, looking at an element touched on during the first season of “Narcos: Mexico” and telling the true story. “The Last Narc” is a four-part docuseries examining in detail the 1985 kidnap and murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Camarena was played by Michael Peña on “Narcos: Mexico.”

Hollywood has courted British TV vet Yann Demange ever since his 2014 Northern Ireland war drama ”’71,” which broke out rising star Jack O’Connell at Berlin and went on to play some 33 festivals, including Telluride. Demange has that magic mix of skills that’s so hard to find: a good eye, a nose for authenticity, and the ability to shoot both sensitive dramatic scenes and visceral action. He can handle actors as well as helicopters and cars. He’s got the whole toolbox.
Jacques Audiard and Darren Aronofsky sent him fan mail. Hollywood executives were so hot on Demange that he wound up on the James Bond director shortlist after Danny Boyle bailed. But “Bond 25” went to the first-ever American director Cary Fukunaga instead. Not long before the James Bond team made their decision, Sony released Demange’s “White Boy Rick” to disappointing reviews and $21.7 million total at the box office.

It was a stranger than fiction bromance that brought together Russian gangster Ludwig “Tarzan” Fainberg, black market luxury car importer Juan Almeida, and international drug trafficker Nelson “Tony” Yester, and it’s our good fortune they each trust director Tiller Russell and his crew as much as they do. Under the watchful eye of an interagency task force (dubbed Operation Odessa, sharing the film’s title), these men teamed up when DEA feared the cartels and Russian mob would unite. The entertaining documentary recounts the balls it took for them to sell a Soviet submarine to Medelin cartel for $35 million.
Directed by Russell, his subjects are cut from the same cloth as those in his previous film The Seven Five, which told the story of some of the NYPD’s dirtiest cops. They are wheelers and dealers, and each made men: “Tarzan” is a small-time mobster from Brooklyn who used to start fires; Almeida,...

Described as the "cop version of 'Goodfellas,'" the film tells the story of Michael Dowd, widely considered to be one of New York City's dirtiest cops. According to the film's official synopsis, "Down led a one man rampage through the streets of East New York, robbing drug dealers, stealing drugs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in the late 80s and early 90s. His eventual arrest in 1992 led to the biggest corruption scandal in New York City History." While America’s police flood the news with reports of questionable conduct, one would expect a documentary addressing their venality to be a dense, multi-layered work exposing flaws in the system. Yet while Director Tiller Russell’s Precinct Seven Five focuses on just one, albeit substantial, account of mass corruption within a single precinct, it remains a

What does it take to direct Precinct Seven Five? Most of all, it takes the willingness to be a co-conspirator.
Someone asked my wife once what I did for a living – she said I was a gangster whisperer. They both laughed. Though the truth lies not far south. My subjects sell drugs. Me, I traffic in story.
Documentaries aren’t often thought to be a director’s medium. Particularly when they’re interview-driven films. But when a criminal unspools the secrets he’s hoarded all his life, what has happened off-screen is as important as what goes on in front of the camera.

Tiller Russell's fast-moving, invigorating documentary will make very gratifying viewing for fans of all those New York-set cop movies by Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet. If Precinct Seven Five is taken as the measure, such fictional representations of police corruption were, if anything understated. Real life was much, much worse. Theft, extortion and narcotics trafficking were second nature for the officers in Precinct Seven Five. With 3,500 murders a year, the city was, for a period in the Eighties, a virtual "war zone".

★★☆☆☆ In Tiller Russell's Precinct Seven Five (2014) we see how a small precinct in East New York became its most corrupt, as the boys in blue came to be on the payroll of local drug gangs. Michael Dowd and his partner Kenny Eurell were at the heart of it, and both could fit straight into a Scorsese film; this is no accident, since it is exactly how they would like to be perceived. Mikey D is jovial, unrepentant; like Lance Armstrong, he is even proud of the scale of his downfall. In the 90s his drug habits and wild behaviour echoed Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant (1992), but even when cocaine-addled and running lights around the ghetto in his red corvette he never feared being busted.

The tagline for Tiller Russell’s riveting new documentary, The Seven Five is “Meet the dirtiest cop in NYC history,” which I suspect does a profound disservice to a lot of other NYC policemen, past and present — although none of them are likely to write letters of complaint. Some cops (not the majority, who risk more every day than most of us will in a lifetime, but some) might watch this film with a peculiar mixture of shame and pride. Michael Dowd — who survived and thrived in the '80s in East New York, “the land of fuck” that “would scare Clint Eastwood” — had big balls and didn’t rat out fellow officers. He was dirty, but the 75th Precinct was, after all, a shithole. This was the height of the crack-cocaine epidemic, when so much money moved through a “ghetto” like East New York that cops would call it...

Tiller Russell's The Seven Five lets the most corrupt (convicted) NYC cop of the Eighties tell his own story. He relishes the chance. Here's Michael Dowd, of Brooklyn's 75th Precinct, describing early relations with his new partner, Kenneth Eurell: "We started to get a little bit of comfortability workin' together. He would take me to Joe's bodega for some fuckin' Heinekens." Dowd's better-than-a-screenwriter cop-talk powers this stellar crime flick, which shares a structure with Goodfellas and the like: the heady first scores, the hubristic highs, the coke-fueled betrayals, the humblings and inevitable wire-wearing. It's familiar and infuriating, but always enthralling, especially as it allows us to stare dead-on into the eyes of someone we see too rarely — a police...

Sony’s planned narrative adaptation of the 2014 documentary The Seven Five just took a big step closer to realisation, with the news that the studio is approaching screenwriter Scott Frank to undertake scripting duties. Frank is the scribe behind such titles as Malice, Get Shorty, Out Of Sight, Minority Report and The Wolverine, and his potential involvement brings huge momentum to the project.
The documentary The Seven Five had its premiere at Doc NYC last year, and Sony snapped up the rights to remake it soon after. It details the devastating police corruption case that shook the New York Police Department to its core in the early 1990s, when 75th precinct officer Michael Dowd was tried and convicted of a raft of terrible crimes. Dowd established a network of illegal activities, recruiting his fellow officers to extort money from drug dealers for protection, and also sell drugs of their own.

Following last year's blistering Troubles drama '71, it looks as if Yann Demange has found his next project. He's in final negotiations with Sony to direct The Seven Five, the story of corrupt NYPD cop Michael Dowd. The title refers to New York's 75th Precinct, from where Officer Dowd ran a scam in the early '90s robbing drug dealers and selling their merchandise back onto the streets. The head of a gang of similarly compromised lawmen, he wasn't exactly subtle about his activities, driving to work in a red Corvette. He was eventually busted by his own partner and sentenced to 14 years in jail in 1992.Dowd was the subject of a documentary directed by Tiller Russell - also called The Seven Five - last year, in which he admits he saw himself as "a cop and a gangster". Sony picked up the remake rights, and the project that Demange...

Sundance Selects has announced the acquisition of the U.S. rights to All3Media America's "The Seven Five," an NYPD crime drama directed by Tiller Russell. The documentary follows Michael Dowd, a police officer working in the 75 Precinct in East New York. Struggling with the hardships of his job and minimal compensation, Dowd began stealing money from drug dealers, over time roping his partner into a growing criminal ring leading to their arrest in 1992. Merging Dowd's testimony from the investigation, surveillance footage and interviews with some key players, "The Seven Five" tells a true and topical tale of corruption in the NYPD. "Tiller Russell has crafted a gripping and timely documentary, expertly recounting a tale about the abuse of power,” said Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. After selling narrative remake rights to Sony, NYPD corruption documentary The Seven Five has sealed a distribution deal with Sundance Selects. Director Tiller Russell’s film chronicles the true crime story of Michael Dowd, a frustrated police officer who turned the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York City into a playground for dirty cops in the 1980s, and whose 1992 arrest exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD.

Exclusive: “I considered myself both a cop and a gangster.” New documentary The Seven Five chronicles the story of New York City police officer Michael Dowd, whose headline-grabbing 1992 arrest for leading a ring of criminalized cops exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD and sent him to prison for 14 years. Friday at Doc NYC, Dowd will appear at the film’s world premiere, where he’ll be reunited for the first time in decades with the former partner who exposed him.
Dowd began squeezing dealers for cash while working out of the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York, eventually recruiting partner Kenny Eurell and others into an expanding ring of dirty cops active from 1986 through 1992. Their flashy transgressions were so flagrant that then-Mayor David Dinkins appointed the Mollen Commission to investigate, uncovering a history of “brutality, theft, abuse of authority and active police criminality” that had been willfully ignored by Internal Affairs.
