Netflix has unveiled the start of production on four new series in Mexico, including one starring Gael García Bernal, reflecting the global streaming giant’s commitment “to continue bringing Mexican stories created by local creators to the screen.”

Following February’s news of a $1 billion investment in local production by Netflix, directors and showrunners presented the new shows in the streamer’s Mexican office. They are Santita, Love 9 to 5 (Amor de oficina), I’m Not Afraid (No tengo miedo), and Corruptors (Los corruptores).

Netflix also confirmed the end of production of Lovesick (Mal de amores), an adaptation of the novel written by Ángeles Mastretta and directed by her daughter, Catalina Aguilar Mastretta.

The new series add to Mexican series that Netflix previously announced it would release this year, namely Snakes and Ladders, The Dead Girls, How to Win the Lottery, The Gringo Hunters, Unspeakable Sins, and No One Saw Us Leave.

Singapore-based Mokster Films has acquired worldwide rights to Tran Trong Dan’s upcoming Vietnamese horror The Guardian Demon, which is set for release this summer.

The film is based on the local legend of the guardian demon, who is summoned to protect family treasures through human sacrificing rituals. Set in a remote rice village, the story revolves around the clan’s greedy master who wants to claim recently discovered treasures for himself, and two newly arrived outsiders who have their own agenda - a young girl seeking work and a young writer looking for the truth behind the mysterious death of his aunt.

K-pop girl group Blackpink has added new dates to its 2025 world tour, with additional nights in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Paris and London.

The tour is slated to kick off in Goyang, South Korea, on July 5. After a second show there the next day, Blackpink will come to Los Angeles for performances on July 12 and 13, and continue their North American leg, concluding in New York on July 27. From there, the band will embark on the European leg of the show, which will conclude on August 16 in London.

Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.

Hello Kitty and the rest of her cute and cuddly friends are stepping into the nightmarish world of Junji Ito, one of Japan's most famous horror manga creators. The popular Sanrio franchise will release an assortment of goods based on Ito's most acclaimed series.

According to Japanese news site Mantan Web, Sanrio's Hello Kitty brand is partnering with the famous horror author for a new line of merchandise based on Ito's most popular works. The first set of merchandise, called "Gal Tomie," will feature the Sanrio characters with Tomie Kawakami from her self-titled series wearing gyaru-inspired clothing. The second set of merchandise, called "The Floating Beautiful Boy at the Crossroads," stars the Intersection Bishounen and Fukata Ryuusuke from Lovesick Dead.

Initially played by Joseph Mawle, Adar will be played by Sam Hazeldine in The Rings of Power season 2, instead.

Although Mawle had not explained his departure from the show, he did write, "Best to cast and crew for S2, I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines X."

Sam Hazeldine is best known for playing recurring roles in Peaky Blinders as George Sewell, Rain Dogs as Paul, Slow Horses as Moe, and most recently, in Masters of the Air as Lt. Col. Albert 'Bub' Clark.

Actor and singer Johnny Flynn boasts an impressive filmography spanning many genres. He played a chief enforcer named Francis in The Outfit, the wealthy, charming, and sometimes foolish Mr. Knightley in Emma, and the spoiled Dickie Greenleaf in the recent Ripley. But before these projects, Flynn starred in a series entitled Lovesick. Here, Flynn plays a grounded and chaotic guy named Dylan, and along with two of his best friends/housemates, Evie (Antonia Thomas) and Luke (Daniel Ings), go on out-of-pocket adventures individually and as a group. But more importantly, it shows the good and bad of relationships may it be in a platonic, non-committal, or romantic way. Short films featuring the likes of Dua Lipa and Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones, Manhunt) reading extracts from the six books on the 2024 shortlist for the International Booker Prize for fiction translated into English will debut on Thursday, courtesy of Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s production company Merman.

The other performers are Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day, Poldark, The Outlaws), David Jonsson (Rye Lane, Industry), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher, Wanderlust), and Antonia Thomas (Still Up, Lovesick, The Good Doctor).

Cora Yim and Benjamin Lin, both established indie producers of Chinese-language content, have joined forces to launch S11 Partners. It is partially backed by Medialink Group, an IP, distribution and brand licensing mini-conglomerate that is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The pair, who previously worked on TV series “Taiwan Crime Stories,” are launching their venture at FilMart in Hong Kong with a slate of three feature films in development. The company’s mission is “developing, financing, producing and distributing original and market-driven Chinese-language content for global audiences.”
