On the surface, little differentiates Apple's The Enfield Poltergeist from The Enfield Haunting, a dramatized take on the famous case. Released in the U.K. in 2015 (and now streaming on Prime Video and Amazon Freevee), The Enfield Haunting hits many of the same beats as the new docuseries. Both rely heavily on Maurice Grosse's 250 hours of recordings, which describe the alleged paranormal activity in the Hodgson family home in late 1970s London, and use those details to power the plot. However, they diverge when it comes to the conclusion each draws from those recordings: If The Enfield Poltergeist begins from a place of belief, only to raise questions about the Hodgsons' claims by its fourth and final episode, The Enfield Haunting takes the opposite approach as it works to convince the audience that the ghostly disturbances were real.

With more people online than ever, the internet isn’t as intimidating and alien as it used to be. Everything also seems easier when you’re connected. Yet when the young and unaware characters in Netflix’s latest series Red Rose download a mysterious phone app, they fall prey to an anonymous predator lurking behind the screen. This basic concept of malevolent cyber forces affecting the real world is nothing novel, especially in such a contemporary setting, but this show does a convincing job of making the web feel unsafe again.
Red Rose, a BBC series that first aired in 2022, is set in the creators’ hometown of Bolton, England. Michael and Paul Clarkson (co-producers of The Haunting of Bly Manor) and production company Eleven (The Enfield Haunting) collaborated on this gripping exercise in technological terror. The story follows a clique of friends whose ostensible leader is targeted by the titular app.

Most recently, he gushed over Ti West's Pearl, calling it "a wild, mesmerizing, deeply — and I mean deeply — disturbing 102 minutes."...

Ed and Lorraine Warren; two of the most renowned paranormal investigators in American history. While they are now known to a larger audience due to their characterizations in the phenomenally successful franchise that spun-off from The Conjuring films, the Connecticut natives accrued an almost four decade history of investigations into the paranormal - long before the current slew of reality based "ghost hunting" television shows. So without further hesitation, let us take a look at seven of the more notorious investigations conducted by Ed and Lorraine Warren.
"The Smurl Haunting"
The Smurl Haunting is named thus, for Jack and Janet Smurl. They claimed that a demon was haunting their home in West Pittston, Pennsylvania between the years of 1974 and 1989. The demon was alleged to have thrown the family dog into a wall and pushed their daughter down the stairs. The Warrens arrived at the Smurl household in 1986 to conduct their own investigation.

Sony Pictures Television has acquired London-based “Sex Education” producer Eleven.
As previously reported, Sony is believed to have beaten off a number of potential buyers, and has taken a majority stake in the outfit.
The investment in Eleven marks one of the few major M&a deals to have emerged from the last four months, when much of the industry has ground to a standstill due to Covid-19. Tom Manwaring of Helion Partners advised the shareholders of Eleven Film on the transaction.
The deal forms part of a wider expansion drive for Sony Pictures Television, who also own “The Crown” producer Left Bank Pictures, and is diversifying the group’s production portfolio and growing IP. In December 2019, Sony Pictures Television expanded further into children’s programming by acquiring Silvergate Media, and broadening the group’s capability in sports and live entertainment production with the acquisition of Whisper Films in February.

Sony has taken a majority stake in Eleven after a competitive process in which a host of potential suitors showed an interest in the producer, including All3Media. The size of the stake and financial terms were not disclosed.
In completing the takeover, Sony is buying out Channel 4’s 20% stake in Eleven. The British broadcaster first invested in the company in 2014 as part of its Indie Growth Fund initiative.
Eleven was founded by creative directors Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson in 2006, and teen drama Sex Education has become its biggest calling card after launching last year.
Other Eleven commissions include Red Rose, a BBC Three horror created by twins Michael and Paul Clarkson, which has been picked up by Netflix in the U.

The debut feature from writer-director William McGregor, Gwen is a dark, chilling period drama that cleverly blends Gothic horror and social realism. As such, it’s an arresting and memorable first feature that marks out McGregor as a talent to watch.
Set in North Wales in the mid-19th century, the film stars Eleanor Worthington-Cox (The Enfield Haunting) as Gwen, a teenager who lives with her younger sister Mari (Jodi Innes) and sickly mother Elen (Maxine Peake) on a rural farm in Snowdonia. The trio are patiently awaiting the return of Gwen’s father (Dyfrig Evans), who’s off fighting in the Crimean War, but a run of bad luck befalls the farm, putting its future in jeopardy. Wheel of Time and The Haunting of Hill House writers Michael and Paul Clarkson are writing an eight-part horror series for the BBC.
The British broadcaster’s youth-skewing network BBC Three has commissioned Red Rose from Sex Education and The Enfield Haunting producer Eleven Film and eOne. The Clarkson twins have also recently written on Apple drama See.
The series follows a disparate group of teenagers, adrift in the long hot summer following GCSEs, hanging out on the Bolton moors with little sense of direction or purpose now that school is over. Rumours circulate of the Red Rose app, an urban legend that blooms on the smartphones of teenagers, encouraging them to undertake a series of challenges increasingly dangerous in its demands. On the fringes of her group of friends, Rochelle Jackson downloads the mysterious app, naively inviting darkness into her life. What she sets in motion is a series...

A family fractured by war struggles to hold onto their farm and their sanity in Gwen, an atmospheric chiller from William McGregor. Set in the mountains of Wales during the industrial revolution, Gwen is now in theaters and on Digital HD and VOD platforms from Rlje Films and Shudder, and we recently caught up with McGregor to discuss assembling his talented cast, taking on a period piece for his feature-length debut, and building ever-tightening tension through enigmatic characters who may or may not be dealing with something supernatural.
Congratulations on Gwen, William, it's an immersive experience to watch this movie, and it was your first feature film, too, so kudos to you on creating that atmosphere.
William McGregor: Yeah, thank you very much. Yeah, the film really is exploring dread, so you just hope if people can sit in a cinema and experience that rising tension and that anxiety for 84 minutes,...

Maxine Peake plays a woman whose property in the wilds of 19th-century Wales is threatened by a predatory mine owner
William McGregor’s debut feature is an eerie hybrid of gothic drama and social realism. It comes on like a chilling mystery-horror in the tradition of The Innocents as a string of calamities befall a woman and her two daughters fighting to keep their farm in 19th-century north Wales. Is some kind of ghostly phenomenon at work? Or, isolated and alone, are the women slowly going mad? McGregor adds a further layer of ambiguity with the possibility that this is a story about female oppression and the struggle of the poor.
Gwen is set in 1855 in Snowdonia as slate mining pushes out farming as the predominant way of life. Eleanor Worthington-Cox (The Enfield Haunting) plays teenager Gwen whose father is away fighting in the army. Her mother Elen (Maxine Peake) is hard and angry,...

Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed co-production “Chernobyl,” Sky and HBO are teaming up once more, this time with Plan B Entertainment, for the Jude Law-led limited series, “The Third Day.”
Hailing from “Utopia” creator Dennis Kelly and Felix Barrett (artistic director of the immersive theatre company Punchdrunk International), the six-part series centers around Sam (Law), “who after being drawn to a mysterious Island off the British Coast, is thrown into the unusual world of its secretive inhabitants.”
Per Sky and HBO: “Isolated from the mainland, the rituals of the island begin to overwhelm him, and he is confronted by a trauma from his past. As the line between reality and fantasy blurs, Sam finds himself immersed in an emotional quest which puts him at odds with the islanders and begins to threaten their way of life.”

Exclusive: Damian Lewis has launched his own production company, Rookery Productions, and plans to develop and direct projects across feature film, television and theater.
This comes after the Billions and Homeland star signed up to A+E Networks’ factual series Spy Wars, which he will co-produce, marking his nascent indie’s first project.
In an interview with Deadline, Lewis said that he wants to produce and direct across genres and has already lined up to develop a feature film, another television series and a play.
“It’s an opportunity for me to create some exciting drama and comedy,” he said. “It gives me an opportunity to be creating things from inception.”
He admitted that it was early days and these projects needed time to “percolate”. But he added, “It’s a way to work independently with other producers, authors and talent to make compelling and provocative content.”

In December 1900, authorities investigating a darkened lighthouse off Scotland’s west coast found all three men employed there missing, with no sign of struggle or any other explanation emerging. Their disappearance became known as “The Flannan Isle Mystery,” inspiring a famous poem by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson—as well as more recent artistic interpretations in various media, from a novel to an opera to a video game. However, “The Vanishing” seems to be the first film inspired by these events. One hopes it isn’t the last, because it’s an intriguing premise, one that Kristoffer Nyholm’s feature ultimately doesn’t make much of.
Falling between the stools of thriller and drama, this speculative tale grows steadily less satisfying, despite a handsome look and a strong cast headed by Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan. It launches Jan. 4 on 10 U.S. screens simultaneous with on-demand release; several other territories will shortly follow.

Saban Films has released a trailer for a fantastic-looking psychological thriller called The Vanishing. The film stars Gerard Butler (London Has Fallen, 300), Peter Mullan (Session 9, Braveheart), and newcomer Connor Swindells.
The film is based on a true story of an unsolved local legend known as the Flannan Isle mystery. The three actors take on the role of lighthouse keepers who end up coming across some gold and this leads them on a deadly journey of survival.
I enjoy stories like this and this movie looks like a solid, well-made film. I especially like that the film stars Butler and Mullan. They’re great. Here’s the synopsis:
On an uninhabited island 20 miles from the rugged Scottish coast, three lighthouse keepers arrive for their 6-week shift. As they settle into their normal quiet routine, something unexpected, potentially life-changing occurs – they stumble upon gold. What follows is a tense battle for survival,...

Whether it’s the formidable Bane or Charles Bronson (real name Michael Gordon Peterson), throughout the course of his stellar career, Tom Hardy has developed a knack for characters that are as dark as they are fiercely intense. Last year, for instance, his fiery, yet understated performance as Max Rockatansky was enough to leave even Immortan Joe quaking in his boots, and Tom Hardy fans will soon be turning their gaze toward Taboo, FX’s upcoming miniseries that places the British actor in the grubby boots of swashbuckling adventurer, James Keziah Delaney.
From the character description alone, we know that Delaney is “a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed,” but thanks to today’s deluge of Taboo promos, we get to see a glimpse of Hardy’s scenery-chewing role. As the key creative mind behind Peaky Blinders, it’s little wonder why FX quickly commissioned Steven Knight’s new, eight-part miniseries Taboo without a moment’s hesitation.
Hatched alongside Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy, the British period drama takes place during the 19th century, where Hardy – Tom, not Chip – will assume the role of swashbuckling adventurer, James Keziah Delaney.
With the pedigree of Knight behind the scenes, not to mention the fact that Kristoffer Nyholm (The Killing, The Enfield Haunting) is on board to helm the first four episodes, there’s a crackle of excitement swirling around Taboo, and budding viewers can now look forward to the series premiering on January 10. Word comes hand-in-hand with the show’s key art, which you can find embedded below.

Three seasons into its run and with a host of prestigious awards already to its name, Peaky Blinders has fast carved out an audience of its own since its bow in 2013, thanks in large part to a cracking cast and that wonderful visual style. Arguably one of the more overlooked gems on Tom Hardy’s résumé is Locke, Steven Knight’s minimalist thriller that had The Revenant star enclosed in a car for the entirety of its running time. The results were a surprisingly tense and gripping drama, so it’s little wonder Hardy and Knight are reteaming for FX and BBC One’s eight-part period drama, Taboo.
Sending Hardy’s back to the early 19th century as James Keziah Delaney, it’s understood the Oscar nominee penned the story along with his father, Chips Hardy, and Taboo is a dark family drama that will be brought to the small screen by Kristoffer Nyholm. (The Killing, The Enfield Haunting).

Looking to capitalize on the global demand for high-end drama coming out of the UK, which also benefits from a lucrative tax break, Pinewood Studios Group has set a joint venture with StoryFirst Pst Limited to form Pinewood Television. The new company will create, develop and finance high quality drama series for the international market. Helen Gregory has been appointed Creative Director.
Pinewood Television is expected to be both an originating producer and a co-producing partner for major drama projects looking for deficit funding. It is in the process of arranging long-term external financing for its slate from a group of investors and banks.
Pinewood Group says the new division will look to fill a gap in the market acting as a one-stop shop, through partnerships with producers, providing both development and deficit financing with enhanced upside economics. The company aims build a library of TV content and says it...
