Blue Jasmine @10: Confessions of a Blanchett Agnostic
Image
by Cláudio Alves

It's been ten years this week since Blue Jasmine arrived in theaters, kickstarting one of the most unwavering award sweeps in living memory. After a period where she dedicated most of her attention to the theater, Cate Blanchett returned to big screen leading lady status with Woody Allen's San Francisco-set Madoff-inspired spin on A Streetcar Named Desire. Her Jasmine is a modern Blanche Dubois bedecked in Chanel, a showcase for thespian pyrotechnics so immense nobody can be left indifferent. No wonder so many count the performance as Blanchett's best and one of the top Best Actress winners of the 21st century. I understand and even grasp the grandeur that enchanted Oscar voters, critics, cinephiles everywhere.

And yet, I can't deny a certain skepticism when faced with the achievement itself, finding it highlights many of the issues I often have with Blanchett on screen. Maybe I am a Blanchett agnostic…...

Emmy winner Peter Scolari dead at age 66 after cancer battle [Watch our backstage Emmy interview]
Image
Actor Peter Scolari is dead at age 66 after a two-year battle with cancer. He starred alongside Tom Hanks in “Bosom Buddies” for two years in the early 1980s for ABC. He then followed up with a long-running role as a small town TV producer opposite Bob Newhart on “Newhart,” which brought him three Emmy nominations.

He finally won an Emmy Award in 2016 as Best Comedy Guest Actor after initially not even being nominated. Following Gold Derby’s reporting that summer (see report here), Peter MacNicol was deemed ineligible for “Veep” due to appearing in too many episodes of that HBO comedy. Scolari was just out of a nomination in seventh place for “Girls” on HBO where he played the father of Lena Dunham‘s character Hannah, so the Television Academy gave him that nomination slot instead. Watch our short backstage video in the Emmy press room has Scolari discusses that unusual turn of events.

Peter Scolari, ‘Newhart’ and ‘Bosom Buddies’ Actor, Dies at 66
Image
Peter Scolari, who rose to stardom on the brilliant-but-canceled “Bosom Buddies” alongside Tom Hanks, died Friday morning at age 66 of cancer, after a two-year illness.

His death was confirmed by his manager Ellen Lubin Sanitsky at Wright Entertainment.

Scolari was a prolific actor, both on television and on Broadway. He won an Emmy in 2016 for his portrayal of Tad Horvath on “Girls,” the father of Hannah (Lena Dunham). From 1987-1989, he was nominated three times for supporting actor Emmys for his role as Michael Harris on “Newhart,” Bob Newhart’s beloved CBS comedy.

On Friday, Newhart issued a statement to Variety: “I knew that Peter was sick, but his death still comes as a great shock. We were friends and colleagues for over 40 years. Julia [Duffy] and Peter, as a vacuous couple (Michael and Stephanie), were an essential part of the success of ‘Newhart.’ In life, he was a fantastic person,...

Charles Grodin Dies: ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ Actor, Unrivaled Talk Show Curmudgeon Was 86
Image
Charles Grodin, the comic, scene-stealing actor of such films as The Heartbreak Kid, Midnight Run and Beethoven who later established himself as a curmudgeonly talk show guest without rival, died today at his home in Wilton, Conn. He was 86.

Wonder Woman 1984 Is Not About Being Political Insists Director Patty Jenkins
Image
Ever since viewers were introduced to Maxwell Lord, the main villain of Wonder Woman 1984 in the film's promotional material, the character has been compared to Donald Trump, with some believing director Patty Jenkins may have inserted veiled references to the current US President in Lord's opulent, blonde-haired persona. But in an interview with Screenrant, Jenkins stated firmly that is not the case.

"The funny thing is he is [an influence], but I'm not trying to make...We even have the president in this movie, and I've gone out of my way not to make it look like Ronald Reagan. I don't want to get political, it's not about being political."

In Wonder Woman 1984, Maxwell Lord, played by Pedro Pascal, is a media conglomerate giant with plans to expand his power and influence through unlawful means. In that sense, Patty Jenkins looked to another real-life personality to fill out the character of Lord.

Raymond De Felitta at an event for 'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris (2006)
Film Review: ‘Bottom of the 9th’
Raymond De Felitta at an event for 'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris (2006)
Nearly two decades after scoring an audience award at Sundance for “Two Family House,” a smartly understated yet deeply affecting indie about a Staten Island factory worker who deeply regrets stifling his showbiz ambitions, director Raymond De Felitta steps back up to the plate with “Bottom of the 9th,” another dramatically solid and emotionally satisfying drama that pivots on a long-shot attempt to fulfill long-delayed dreams.

De Felitta — whose resume also includes “City Island,” “Rob the Mob” and the 2016 TV miniseries “Madoff” — takes an admirably restrained approach to a familiar scenario that could have come off as sappy in the wrong hands. At the same time, however, he allows his most valuable players, led by Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara, more than enough freedom to make vivid and compelling impressions within the lines he has drawn.

Manganiello plays Sonny Stano, a once-promising baseball player who was on his way to...

Scott Foley
Scott Foley‘s got a killer (or is it?) new role.

The Scandal star has signed on to Investigation Discovery’s Fatal Vision, in which he’ll play an Army captain convicted of murdering his family, our sister site Deadline reports.

The TV movie, based on Joe McGinniss’ nonfiction bestseller of the same name, chronicles the 1970 murders of pregnant Colette MacDonald and her daughters, Kimberly and Kristen. Foley’s character, Jeffery MacDonald, also was wounded in what he later told investigators was a ritualistic, Manson Family-style home invasion.

Rich People Loved ‘Madoff': Viewers With $100,000-Plus Flocked to ABC Miniseries
Richard Dreyfuss in Madoff (2016)
ABC’s “Madoff” opened and closed to modest numbers, especially in the key 18-49 demographic — but the miniseries premiered far better among the affluent. On Wednesday night, Part 1 of “Madoff” debuted to a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which was only good enough to be the No. 8-rated broadcast show of the night. In other words, not “good” at all. However, when adjusting for just those with a six-figure annual income, the Richard Dreyfuss-starrer jumped 25 percent to a 1.5 rating, making it fifth-best for the evening. And among those in the age range with $200,000-plus in annual income, “Madoff” rose.

‘Madoff’ Ratings Debut With Little Dividends, ‘Chicago P.D.’ Rises, ‘Arrow’ Down
The saga and scams of Bernie Madoff took over ABC on Wednesday in the first part of a two-night miniseries, but Madoff (1.2/4) didn't really prove that great an investment – at least in the ratings. While the Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner starrer snagged 7.03 million viewers overall, among adults 18-49 the 2-hour Part 1 last night was way down from the average that ABC commonly pulls in from 8 -10 Pm. In the 8 Pm slot, only NBC's The Mysteries Of Laura (1.1/3), which…...
